A: InthepreliminarystudiesthatprecededtheformulationofthebasicINTERSCAN concepts,thevariousavenuespursuedIcarefullyexaminedinconjunctionwiththe materialdeveloped,thetimereferencescanningbeamtechnique,usingelectronically scannedantennas,appearedtohavefourfundamentaladvantages. Firstly,thetotalsystemperformanceislargelydeterminedbythegroundequipment whichcanthusbematchedtospecificairportsitesandrequirementsandcanlaterbe updatedwithoutchangingtheairborneequipment. Secondly,theapproachofferedsimplicityofequipment,particularlytheairborne subsystems. Thirdly,ahighrateofguidanceinformationcouldbetransmittedfromtheground equipment.
