How to apply for Bachelors degrees


Applying
Applying for English-language programmes in Bachelors level at TUAS takes place through a system of joint application. This means that you can apply for up to four (4) different degree programmes at Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (former polytechnics) using the same online application form. The order of preference chosen in the application is binding and cannot be altered after the application period has ended. If you are not accepted to the programme of your first preference, your points will be checked to see if you can be accepted for your second, third or fourth preference. If you are accepted to the degree programme of your first preference, you cannot be selected for your second, third or fourth preference. Apply online at www.admissions.fi during 7 January 12 February 2013. The application period starts on 7 January 2013 and closes on 12 February 2013 at 16.15 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT). All online applications must be submitted before the closing time. The online application service guides and helps you to fill in the application form and gives information related to studying and applying. It is important that you follow all the instructions carefully. The online application service is open until 12 February 2013, 16.15 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT). If TUAS is your first choice UAS, all required attachments have to be at Turku University of Applied Sciences, Admissions Office, Joukahaisenkatu 3 A, FI-20520 TURKU by 22 February 2013, 16.15 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT). All applications and attachments arriving after the closing date are void. The attachments must be sent BY POST, scanned or faxed copies will not be accepted.

Changing the application


The order of preference can be changed only during the application period Address or other relevant personal details can be changed outside the application period (Plea se let us know as soon as possible if your address has changed!) General eligibility
You are qualified to apply to TUAS (and other Finnish UAS) if you have completed Finnish upper secondary education or the Finnish matriculation examination, European Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate or Reifeprfung examination, vocational qualification of at least three years in duration or a non-Finnish qualification that gives right to university studies in the homeland or the country of departure. Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries must have completed their studies by the end of the application period (12 Feb 2013). In order to demonstrate their eligibility to UAS studies, they must send by 22 Feb 2013 to the admissions office of their first preference UAS the copy of their original final certificate. In addition, an official Finnish, Swedish or English translation of the certificate must be provided, if the certificate is not written in one of these languages. The translation must have the translators signature and stamp. Note that only copies of original final certificates will be accepted, result slips or statements of results will not be accepted. Please mark all your certificate copies with the ID code assigned to you in the online application! If an applicant who is applying with a non-Finnish qualification is a citizen of an EU/EEA country, he/she can apply if the qualification is completed during the spring of applying. Such applicant must send a copy of his/her final certificate later with the confirmation letter if he/she is admitted and confirms the acceptance of a study place. The admission of such an EU/EEA applicant is conditional until the UAS has checked the applicants final certificates. EU/EEA applicants, who have completed the qualification before the spring of 2013, have to send to the admissions office of their first preference UAS the copy of their final certificates by 22 Feb 2013. If the applicant is a refugee or in a refugee-like situation and the qualifications obtained cannot be proven through documentary evidence, the UAS/polytechnic can consider whether the applicant can be invited to the entrance examination. The applicant must prove his/her refugee status by decision made by a competent authority by 22 February 2013 16.15 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT). The first choice UAS will decide on the applicants eligibility to all options in the application except for the UAS/polytechnics using discretionary admissions. Turku University of Applied Sciences does not use discretionary admissions and thus the applicant has to have the final certificates in order to apply to TUAS.

Language skills requirements


An applicant who is applying with a non-Finnish qualification and is not a citizen of an EU/EEA country must provide proof of their English language skills by 22 February 2013 16.15 at the latest, to the admissions office of his/her first preference polytechnic/UAS. In order to prove the applicants English language skills, he/she must meet one of the following minimum requirements: IELTS score academic level 6.0 or TOEFL score 550 paper-based test/ 7980 internet-based test or skills level 4 in English in all parts (English communicative oral skills, reading comprehension and writing) in the National Certificate of Language Proficiency (www.oph.fi => Mobility => Testing Language Skills) or Cambridge ESOLs Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Cambridge ESOLs Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) level C or Pearson test of English (General test level 4 and Academic 51) or grade C in the Finnish matriculation examination in advanced level English (IB examination grade 4 completed in Finland, Reifeprfung examination grade 7 completed in Finland or EB examination grade 6.006.95).

Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. The National Certificate of Language Proficiency does not have a set date of validity. TOEFL score results are only accepted if they are delivered directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). In addition, upper secondary level school education in English completed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand or a Bachelors or Masters degree completed in English in one of these countries is also accepted as a demonstration of sufficient English language skills. A Bachelors or Masters degree conducted in English in a European Union/European Economic Area country is also accepted as a demonstration of sufficient English language skills. The applicants language skills will be evaluated in the language test included in the entrance examination on a pass/ fail basis. An applicant who has failed the language test is withdrawn from admission.

Selection of new students


All applicants who have demonstrated their eligibility and language skills will be invited to the entrance examination. All our English-taught degree programmes have entrance examinations in Finland. The DP in Information Technology and DP in International Business organise entrance exams in some Asian, African and European countries. Please see our website for updated information about these countries. Please note that the DP in Nursing will organise entrance exams only in Finland. The examinations are held between 2 April and 3 May 2013. The applicants language skills will be evaluated in the language test included in the entrance examination on a pass/fail basis. An applicant who has failed the language test is withdrawn from admission. The DP in International Business and DP in Nursing select all new students on the basis of the results of the entrance examination. The DP in Information Technology selects 50 % of applicants on the basis of the entrance examination only, and 50 % on the basis of the combined points for previous school performance and the entrance examination. Admission results will be sent by mail to the applicants by 16 July 2013 at the latest. Admitted students must confirm their study places by 30 July 2013 at 16.15 Finnish time at the latest; otherwise he/she will forfeit the study place offered to him/her. Note that the admission of a student is conditional until TUAS (or other Finnish UAS/Polytechnic) has checked the applicants school and other relevant certificates. TUAS may withdraw the admission if the applicant has given false information. A student may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree during one academic term. An accepted student will receive a letter informing him/her of his/her points and possible reserve places for the options to which he/she has applied. The applicants allocated to reserve places are chosen according to the level of their results, should study places become available. If you do not receive a study place in the joint application, you will receive a letter informing you of your points and possible reserve places for the options to which you have applied.

Appeal
If an applicant who has applied to TUAS is not satisfied with the results of the student selection process, he/she should first contact with the Admissions Office of Turku University of Applied Sciences.

Please note Health care:
Citizens of EU and EEA countries are entitled to all health services in Finland if they are covered by health insurance in their own country. You should ask the social security authorities in your own country for the European Health Insurance Card or the document needed for social security in Finland. Additional private insurance is also recommended. For citizens of non-EU/EEA countries it is important to know that the costs of treatments at the municipal health centre or at hospital may rise to thousands of euros for citizens of non-EU/EEA countries. Turku University of Applied Sciences has insurance against injuries during studies for its students but it does not cover for leisure time, trips to/from TUAS nor eventual illnesses during their stay. If a student comes from a country outside EU or EEA, he/she should have a private medical insurance to cover for all the costs related to the treatment of sudden illnesses and accidents. For more information about reasonably priced health insurance for non-EU/EEA citizens please see www.sipinsurance.eu. Turku University of Applied Sciences is not responsible for any payments.

Residence permit for citizens of non-EU/EEA countries:


From 1 September 2007 a residence permit (first and extension) for studies in Finland will be granted only provided that the applicant has a valid health insurance. For more information please contact the nearest Finnish embassy/diplomatic mission. See also http://www.migri.fi (the Finnish Immigration Service). To study in Finland as a degree student you must apply for a residence permit already in your home country.

Costs:
The tuition is free of charge, but you have to pay for books, other materials and printouts yourself. You can also pay an annual membership fee to the Student Union to get some benefits. Student meals and housing are the students financial responsibility. The total monthly living expenses (housing included) of a single student average around EUR 700800. There is no financial support available for foreign students.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS DEGREE: BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
210 ECTS credits (3.5 years) Intake 2013: 40 Applicants 2012: 306 (all eligible applicants) This full-time undergraduate programme enables you to combine personal development and professional competence building. You will learn to understand the global environment that affects entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized companies as well as global organisations. Through these studies you will gain the latest theoretical business knowledge together with practical skills needed in an international and innovative business environment. You will attend a dynamic and multicultural learning environment supported by the latest learning technologies. A combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, case studies, study projects and company visits provides you with the competences for your future career. Teamwork with students from other countries helps you to develop problem solving and presentation and communication skills appreciated by employers. The degree programme itself provides an international learning environment: students, staff members, visiting lecturers and exchange students represent around twenty different nationalities. All the IB students complete part of the degree abroad or obtain a double-degree in our partner institutions. Practical training can also be done abroad. NURSING DEGREE: BACHELOR OF HEALTH CARE
210 ECTS credits (3.5 years) Intake 2013: 18 Applicants 2012: 193 (all eligible applicants) The overall aim of the Degree Programme in Nursing is to educate students with a view to practicing in international and multicultural nursing contexts. The practical work will include provision of nursing care and support to individuals, families and communities in order to help them achieve favourable health and avoid illness. The focus of the studies is on the whole person. An important goal is to develop the students skills in establishing counselling and interactive relationships with anxious and distressed individuals. The programme highlights particularly the impact of culture on nursing care and the expected outcomes. Students are encouraged to perform part of their studies abroad. The basics of business entrepreneurship are included in the curriculum. The students will be acquainted with problem-based learning (PBL), and the foundations of evidence-based nursing, as well.

When applying to the Degree Programme in Nursing, please note the following: 1. Health requirements in the field of Social Services and Health In the field of Social Services and Health, the applicant must consider whether his/her health condition enables his/her successful practical studies and work placement. Consider the following points: both studying and working in the profession requires good mental health the field is not suitable for a person who uses illegal drugs or misuses alcohol or pharmaceuticals musculoskeletal diseases, chronic dermatological diseases and allergies can become a health issue during the studies or later in professional life blood-borne diseases can limit placement in professional life. A polytechnic/UAS can request that the student provides his/her criminal records extract before his/her work placement, if the work placement tasks include working with children

2. Previously revoked study places The field of Social Services and Health includes safety requirements that deal with working with minors, patients, customers or working in traffic. Therefore a student can lose the right to study (study place) if he/she has not disclosed information about his/her earlier revoked study place based on the above mentioned safety requirements in the application form. The same concerns a situation if an applicant has on repeated instances seriously endangered the health or safety of others. These points will be asked in the application form.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEGREE: BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING
SPECIALISATION: Internet Technology 240 ECTS credits (4 years) Intake 2013: 40 Applicants 2012: 259 (all eligible applicants) Students in this programme will learn how to manage and develop computer networks, network servers and server applications. To ensure high quality education of the latest technologies, we offer both CISCO Network Academy and Microsoft IT Academy courses. Furthermore, this truly international degree programme, with students from Asia, USA, Africa and Europe, is a good environment for the development of social and language skills. Pedagogically we rely on active learning methods, e.g., laboratory work and working life-related projects. All students will also participate in work placement periods during which they work in companies in the ICT sector. Turku University of Applied Sciences is a member of the CDIO initiative (www.cdio.org) for continuous development of engineering education. Former students of this programme work in various positions in the ICT sector, e.g., as private entrepreneurs or in companies developing and maintaining communication networks. We try to educate engineers suitable both for the Finnish and the international market. Turku is a well-known university town with two Universities and one University of Applied Sciences offering education in Information Technology, Electronics and Computer science. All IT departments from these institutions are situated in the same campus giving our students good possibilities to choose courses from other universities and for further education. Students who have graduated from the Degree Programme in Information Technology can apply for a Masters Programme at Universities of Applied Sciences or at Science Universities. The former require three years of relevant work experience after graduation and prior to the application. We are looking for students with an engineering mindset and a strong background in Mathematics, Science and English from their upper secondary school.

SELECTION CRITERIA: General eligibility. Applicants who have completed the Finnish matriculation examination, the IB examination in a Finnish upper secondary school, the Reifeprfung examination in Finland or the European Baccalaureate examination in a European school are admitted on the basis of the combined points for previous school performance and the entrance examination. For other applicants, the final admission will be based only on the entrance examination. Points awarded for school performance (only in Information Technology) Applicants who are applying on the basis of their upper secondary school leaving certificate and the Finnish matriculation examination certificate are awarded points for three grades on their matriculation examination certificate: mother tongue, English and the best of mathematics, general studies chemistry or general studies physics. Candidates for the matriculation examination apply with their latest upper secondary school certificate. The polytechnics/UAS will receive results of the matriculation examination directly from the Matriculation Examination Board. Applicants who are completing their IB examination in a Finnish upper secondary school or an applicant completing the European Baccalaureate examination in spring 2013 apply with their Predicted Grades. These applicants must provide a copy of their Predicted Grades (or applicants with EB a copy of their temporary certificate) to the admissions office of their first choice by 17 May 2013. The admission of an applicant who is completing his/her EB examination or IB examination in a Finnish upper secondary school during the application process is conditional until the applicants final certificate has been checked. Applicants who are completing their Reifeprfung examination in spring 2013 in Finland must provide a copy of their final certificate to the admissions office of their first choice by 17 May 2013. The entrance examinations are held in Finland and in some countries of Asia, Africa and Europe during 2 April 3 May 2013. Note that the DP in Nursing has an entrance examination only in Finland. 6. Turku University of Applied Sciences will send the admission letter with the information package (containing important information about the arrival, accommodation etc.) to the admitted applicants by 16 July 2013. Note that non-EU/EEA citizens should start applying for a residence permit at once after receiving the admission letter. 7. The admitted student must confirm the acceptance of his/her study place to Turku University of Applied Sciences, Admissions Office by 30 July 2013 at 16.15 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT). 8. How to apply for Masters degrees
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT, MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMME Degree: Master of Business Administration, tradenomi (ylempi AMK)
90 ECTS credits 2.5 years / full-time 1.5 years Intake 2013: 20 Applicants 2012: 49 (all eligible applicants) Application period: from 4 March to 3 April 2013, 16.15 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT) In this Masters Degree Programme you will develop further the competences needed in todays demanding global business environment. The studies provide you with in-depth coverage of strategic planning and management of international business concepts and operations as well as the required organisational capabilities. The programme includes mandatory advanced studies in international business and management. You can deepen your expertise by selecting optional studies which best support your own competence and career development. The programme is working life and research and development oriented. The applicant is required to have a Finnish Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences, Business and Administration or in Technology or an equivalent degree from an internationally recognised university. A qualified applicant has a minimum of three years of relevant work experience as well as good proficiency in the English language. The structure of the degree programme: Advanced professional studies 30 ECTS Integrative studies 15 ECTS Optional studies 15 ECTS Masters Thesis 30 ECTS The programme is strongly oriented towards the research and development of working life and can be completed while working. It relies in multiform studies with internet based studies in a central role. The Master's Thesis is a research or development project carried out in relation to working life.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Degree/qualification requirement To be eligible for admission the applicant must have a Bachelors degree in Social Sciences, Business and Administration or in Technology or an equivalent degree from an internationally recognised university. Please note that only final certificates will be accepted. Work experience requirements The applicants are required to have a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience acquired after graduation with a higher education degree. The work experience required to meet the eligibility criteria must be gained by 30 July 2013. Relevant work experience gained after a Finnish upper secondary vocational level (previous Finnish college-level, opistoaste) or a higher vocational level (ammatillinen korkea-aste) degree before a bachelors degree can be accepted. Also in such a case the minimum requirement is three years of work experience. Work experience does not have to be acquired from only one employer. Part-time work experience is counted thus that 20 work days (at least 7 hours work/day) or 150 hours of work equals to one month of full-time work experience.

Language requirements All applicants must have sufficient English proficiency. Finnish and EU/EEA applicants' English language proficiency will be evaluated in the entrance exam. An applicant who is applying with a non-Finnish qualification and is not a citizen of an EU/EEA country must provide proof of their English language skills by 3 April 2013 16.15 pm at the latest to the admissions office. In order to prove his/her English language skills, the applicant must meet one of the following minimum requirements: Cambridge ESOLs Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Cambridge ESOLs Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) level C. Pearson test of English (General test level 4 and Academic 51) or IELTS score academic level 6.0 or TOEFL score 550 paper-based test/ 7980 internet-based test or skills level 4 in English in all parts (English communicative oral skills, reading comprehension and writing) in the National Certificate of Language Proficiency. Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. The National Certificate of Language Proficiency does not have a set date of validity. TOEFL score results are only accepted if they are delivered directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). In addition, school education in English completed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand or a Bachelors or Masters degree completed in English in one of these countries, is also accepted as a demonstration of sufficient English language skills. A Bachelors or Masters degree conducted in English in a European Union/European Economic Area country is also accepted as a demonstration of sufficient English language skills. The applicants language skills will be evaluated in the language test included in the entrance examination on a pass/ fail basis. An applicant who has failed the language test is withdrawn from admission. Tuition fee There is a tuition fee for students from countries outside the EU/EEA who do not have a permanent residency in Finland. The fee is EUR 4 000 per semester (30 ECTS). A limited number of scholarships covering half of the semester tuition fee is available after every semester primarily for those students who have obtained excellent results in their studies.

Pre-assignment The pre-assignment material and the assignment will be published in January 2013. The pre-assignment must be returned together with the application documents by 3 April 2013 at 16.15 Finnish time (+2 GMT). Entrance examination Applicants who have proved their eligibility in the required way by the deadline will be invited to the entrance examination on 28 May 2013, starting at 10.00 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT). It is not possible to take the examination abroad. Applicants who fail to prove their eligibility in the required way (e.g. have not delivered all the required documents to the Admissions Office by the deadline) will not be invited to the entrance examination and their applications will be automatically rejected. The applicants language skills will be assessed in the language test included in the entrance examination on a pass/ fail basis. An applicant who has failed the language section of the entrance examination is automatically disqualified. STUDENT SELECTION
The applicants must pass all parts of the entrance examination in order to get admitted. Other entrance examination results will not be accepted. The student selection will be made based on the entrance examination results. The results of the student selection will be published in the end of June 2013. The original certificates will be checked at the beginning of the studies and the student selection is conditional until this has been completed. BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS, MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMME Degree: Master of Business Administration, tradenomi (ylempi AMK)
90 ECTS credits (2.5 years, as full-time studies 1.5 years) Intake 2013: 20 No intake 2012 Application period: from 4 March to 3 April 2013, 16.15 Finnish time (+2 hrs. GMT). The Masters Degree Programme in Business Information Systems aims to provide the knowledge and skills to manage and develop information systems in a business environment aligned with business goals and objectives. The focus of this programme is on the two key competence areas of middle management and business development, i.e. eBusiness and Information Security. Both technological and organisational issues are addressed in analysing, designing, developing and deploying information systems solutions. The studies concentrate on issues of information systems and information security which are crucial from the point of view of business sustainability and efficiency. The programme also includes studies on the management of ICT services, standardisation of applications and project management. Some courses are implemented as distance studies in co-operation with the international university partners of TUAS. Turku is a well-known university town with two universities and one University of Applied Sciences offering education in the study fields of business informatics and business management. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Degree/qualification requirement To be eligible for admission the applicant must have a Bachelors degree in Business Administration or a degree in a closely related study field. The degree should include Business Informatics studies in minimum 60 ECTS and Business studies in minimum 15 ECTS. Please note that only final certificates will be accepted. Work experience requirements The applicants are required to have a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in the field of Business Informatics, acquired after graduation with a higher education degree. The work experience required to meet the eligibility criteria must be gained by 30 July 2013. Relevant work experience gained after a Finnish upper secondary vocational level or a higher vocational level degree before a bachelors degree can be accepted. Also in such a case the minimum requirement is three years of work experience. The work experience does not have to be acquired from only one employer.
