A mere 25 miles to the west and north of us as the crow flies, residents awakened to a blanket of snow already eight inches deep and snow still coming. This was the scene on Ohio Street in beautiful downtown Hinsdale at 7:45 this morning. At 8:30 a.m., a weather observer a mile east of Hinsdale reported 11 inches of snow! Please stay safe out there...

Gingerbread Houses are as traditional as Christmas trees and evergreen boughs. Gingerbread has been baked in Europe for centuries. In some places, it was a soft, delicately spiced cake; in others, a crisp, flat cookie, and in others, warm, thick, steamy-dark squares of

bread, It was almost always cut into shapes such as men, women, stars or animals, and colorfully decorated or stamped with a mold and dusted with white sugar to make the impression visible. Ginger was also discovered to continued on page 2

have a preservative effect when added to pastries and bread, and this probably led to the development of recipes for ginger cakes, cookies. Gingerbread began spreading throughout Western Europe at the end of the eleventh century, possibly introduced by crusaders returning from wars in the Eastern Mediterranean. Germany has one of the longest traditions of flat, shaped gingerbreads. Nuremberg is known as the gingerbread capital of the world. Here fine craftsmen contribute to the most beautiful gingerbread creations. In North America, gingerbread and gingerbread houses were introduced by the European settlers. Here, it is Christmas time when gingerbread makes its most impressive appearance. From elaborate Victorian houses, heavy with candies and sugar icicles to Hansel and Gretel houses, the Gingerbread house means a richly decorated Christmas decoration created with families in mind. Come and decorate your own gingerbread house Monday, December 9th at 5:30 p.m. in the kitchen of the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow. For just decorating fun, attend Monday night to create your masterpiece from a prebuilt gingerbread house. Creativity will be unlimited as the houses are decorated. This is a great activity for families, grandmothers and grandchildren, husbands and wives or even groups of youth. Everyone is invited to participate and make memories this Christmas season. There will be a $15 fee for supplies. Please contact the Valley County Extension Office to preregister for this class at 228-6241.

Does buck fever really exist? Some hunters swear by it. But Kyle Humbert (left) and his father Dan were apparently unaffected this hunting season, both harvesting some massive muleys as the end of hunting

season was rapidly approaching. Where were they hunting? Why, up north of course. Or was it out south? No Tell Em Coulee was our conclusion. Regardless, it was an awesome outing for the father-son duo.

A What To Do With The Kids Special Report

In 2011 What To Do With The Kids polled our followers and we asked them to give us their list of the top Christmas or Holiday Movies or Television Shows that the whole family can watch. The list was well received and judging by the feedback was very popular. Two years later however we decided to ask our followers again and there has been quite a shift in popularity of some of those classic movies. It seems that black and white movies are now out. Many parents suggested that once the movie started, the kids would complain about the color, or lack of it. Many families have said that although they enjoyed watching the old black and white movies in past years, they tend to agree with their kids that it has very little appeal today. The Frank Capra classic Its a Wonderful Life dropped from second to third place while Miracle on 34th Street dropped to eighth place. Animated features are as popular as ever but many adults commented that they were not able to watch them on regular television as they normally would because of their busy schedules so they opted to purchase a copy on DVD. Many parents commented that they had purchased DVD or Blue Ray versions of their favorites but made an effort to only bring them out during the holiday season. Ron Howards The Grinch went from honorable mention to a tie for number six faster than a runaway sled pulled by a little dog while A Christmas Story was shot off the list (by a BB gun) all together. Most respondents, however, had said that they still do get the family together to watch at least one holiday movie. With over 1,400 entries, What To Do With The Kids presents the updated Top 10 Family Christmas/Holiday Movie or Television Shows: 1. How The Grinch Stole Christmas
