NOVC001 !B Annapolis Royal (X06) Located about 10 miles southeast of the Reminisce Bed & Breakfast in Bridgetown, Annapolis Royal has several interesting sights: North Americas first tidal power project, the Ft. Anne Historic Site, and the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens. The bed & breakfast is supposed to be special a big breakfast and good muffins (just in case we want to sleep one night out of the camper). The 10-acre park features themed gardens representing different periods in Port Royals history. See A92 for more detail. Allow 30 minutes. Opened in 1984 it is the first and only tidal generating plant in North America. Includes interpretive center, AV presentations, miniature model railroad and 2 enclosed observation decks. Served as strategic site for both French and English in control of eastern Canada. Has preserved parts of fort along with museum. Guided tours available. Allow one hour. Zoo is one of the largest displays of cats and primates in Atlantic Canada, and home to Rutledge, an 807-pound lion believed to be the heaviest in the world. Allow 1.5 hours. NOVC004 B Baddeck (A94) 1) A number of scenic routes originate in Baddeck, and The Cabot Trail loops through here. 2) Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site of Canada [Gem site], is at the east end of town on Hwy205. Site focuses on life and discoveries of inventor Alexander Graham Bell. See A94 for more detail. Allow one hour. NOVC005 B Cape Breton Highlands National Park of Canada [Gem site], (A96) The Cabot Trail is a circle tour of the eastern and western shores of Cape Breton Island and the picturesque Margaree Valley, and winds along the edge of the parks rugged, forested slopes, providing a scenic 186-mile drive. The Cheticamp Visitor Center has a 10minute slide show. An entry permit is required for park use and Cabot Trail sightseeing. Hiking trails lead from the Cabot Trail to the interior or along the shore. The 26 trails range from short, easy strolls to challenging mountain hikes. NOVC006 B Cheticamp (A97) Cheticamp lies on an especially scenic section of the Cabot Trail, which encircles the northern tip of Cape Breton Island and passes the western entrance of Cape Breton Highlands national Park of Canada (see A96) 3 miles northeast of town. NOVC007 B Denmark (A98) Sutherland Steam Mill is off Hwy6 on Hwy326. Site has restored 1894 sash and door factory, sawmill and carriage shop. NOVC008 B Digby (A98,99) is also a gateway to a region of spectacular beauty, Digby Neck and Islands. This narrow ribbon of land juts far out into the Bay of Fundy, providing breathtaking views and one of North Americas best whale-watching areas. NOVC009 B Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada [Gem site], (A99,100) About 1/4 of Louisbourg has been reconstructed to its 1744 appearance, resulting in one of Canadas largest national historic sites. (See additional information on A100) Visitor center has AV presentation, models and exhibits. Buses depart from center at frequent intervals for the 5-minute drive to the reconstructed site. Theres an interpretive trail, a 5minute trek around panoramic view, a ruins walk, and interpretive walk at the Royal Battery. Allow a full day! NOVC010 !B Glace Bay (A100) The Miners Museum is 1 mile west via Commercial and South streets to 2 Birkley Street. Museum exhibits focus on early mining techniques, mining communities, immigration, and future uses of coal. Guided tours include an underground mine beneath the building and miners house and company store. A special effects ride simulates a trip down a mineshaft. NOVC011 B Grand-Pre (A101) Grand-Pre National Historic Site of Canada [Gem site], is inland from Minas Basin at 2241 Grand-Pre Road. This site commemorates the towns Acadian settlers who were deported 1755-63 to British colonies throughout North America. The Acadian village once stood here inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellows epic poem, Evangeline. See more detail on A101. NOVC012 !B Granville Ferry (A101) North Hills Museum [Gem site], is off Hwy1 on the north shore of the Annapolis River at 5065 Granville Road. NOVC013 B Halifax (A101-105) Map of Halifax on A102 1) Halifax Citadel National Historic Site [Gem site], (A102 & 103) is one of Canadas most visited attractions. A massive star-shaped fortification. 7) Public gardens (A104,105) bounded by South Park St, Sackville St, Spring Garden Rd, and Summer St. Covers 17 acres. Considered one of the finest examples of a Victorian garden in North America. Concerts given Sundays at 2, July-Aug. Daily 8-dusk, May-Oct. Ph: 902.490.6509. 8) York Redoubt National Historic Site of Canada (A105) is 8 miles south on Hwy 253 (Purcells Cove Road) . This fortification was established in 1793 as a key element in the citys defense. Also served as a training ground for WWI Canadian forces, and a location for defenses during WWII. Allow one hour. NOVC022 B Noel (A111) Burntcoat Head Park is 3 miles north of junction of Hwys215 and 354. The 3-acre park over looks the Bay of Fundy. Anchored in the harbor is a full-size replica of the Hector, a 3-masted Dutch sailing ship that brought the first Scottish immigrants to Nova Scotia in 1773. Guided tours available. NOVC027 B Shelburne (A114) 1) Muir-Cox Shipbuilding Interpretive Centre at south end of Dock Street along the waterfront. NOVC032 B Wolfville (A119) Prescott House Museum off Hwy101 exit 11, is .9 miles north of Greenwich on Hwy 358, then 2.5 miles east to 1633 Starrs Point Road. 2) Self-guiding tours are available from the tourist info center on Forest Street in front of the ferry terminal. 3) Firefighters Museum of Nova Scotia (A120) is at 451 Main Street and features vintage firefighting equipment including horse-drawn steamers and hand-drawn, hand-operated pumpers. Ph: 902.742.5525. 4) Yarmouth County Museum and Archives (A120) is at 22 Collins Street. Housed in a granite church, the museum contains one of Canadas largest collection of ships portraits.
