Keeping Safe in Leeds Is All About: Knowledge The Police, Universities, Unions and Council in Leeds
Knowledge
brings together
Its aim is to debunk myths surrounding student crime in Leeds by empowering students to proactively tackle crime in their area. Knowledge is led by the Leeds Universities and Colleges Crime Reduction Partnership (LUCCRP) and works to make sure students get the right information and advice delivered in a way that is engaging and memorable. Moving away from home for the rst time can be a daunting experience, particularly without the safety net of mum and dad. As parents, you are best placed to deliver the kind of common sense safety advice that your sons and daughters will need in the real world. This short handbook has easy to implement advice that your child can adopt to reduce the likelihood of them becoming a victim of crime. For more information on Knowledge. visit:

3# Shut up!
Keep doors and windows locked at all times. Around 50% of student burglaries are caused by an open door or window.
As a direct result of Immobilise, there are over 250 cases a week where property is returned.
By actively promoting Immobilise, students can be reassured that - if they become victims of property theft - the police have an increased chance of recovering their property and catching the offenders.
5# Bright idea
Dont make it obvious keeping a lamp or radio on if youre all out at night will deter burglars.
6# Taxi
In general, if youre taking a taxi, whether day or night, we recommend you ring and book in advance. When it arrives, ask the driver who theyre picking up rather than giving them your details rst. When you use a taxi, always check that the meter is running when you get in to avoid any surprise costs.
7# Report it
Across the country there is a lot of crime that goes unreported. Reporting minor incidents or even things that seem suspicious is incredibly useful for the police, and can allow them to commit greater resources to a particular area. For all non-emergencies, ring 101 or report it on the West Yorkshire Police website: www.westyorkshire.police.uk/contact-us/reportcrime. Remember, if something looks wrong, it probably is. If you see something suspicious, report it!
8# Safe as Houses
There are loads of houses in Leeds so theres no need to rush to nd one. Take your time to make sure you nd one with doors and windows of a good quality. Look for landlords that are Unipol afliated for that added peace of mind.
9# Get involved!
Knowledge promotes various volunteering opportunities, including joint initiatives between Knowledge and West Yorkshire Police, a Student Neighbourhood Watch scheme as well as one-off opportunities. A new initiative that we will be implementing is a volunteer-led drop-in service with the charity Victim Support for all students in Leeds who unfortunately become victims of crime. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, to help out other students, and is a fantastic asset to have on any CV. If your son or daughter would like to volunteer on any of the Knowledge initiatives above, they can send an email to info@knowledge-leeds.co.uk.
