Title: 12 Bar Blues Jam Preparation: In the introductory lesson, the following will be covered: Basic proficiency in the selected instrument General knowledge of Music theory covering: the blues scale (I, bIII, IV, bV, V, bVII) and how to introduce it, Chords, and progressions Discuss what the essential parts are to listening, analyzing, and creating. Have the students follow a 12 bar blues improvisation (http://youtube.com/watch?v=XZfXkuOhhLG) Have students discuss with the class and share what they have with the whole class Process & Personalization: 1. Now that we have heard and discussed the 12 Bar blues, we will break into Groups to create multiple variations with instrumental diversity. a. Orf Instruments b. Instrumental c. Technology (Piano, Violin, Sax, Instrument apps) d. Vocalists 2. Each group will consist of at least one member from each group. Once the groups are formed students will try to find ways of how they can combine the diverse instruments into a new creative 12 Bar Blues. (If time allows, each students solo) 3. Once each group has an opportunity to play we will have a review listen. The video from the beginning of class will be played briefly again. a. Did you incorporate anything from this in your arrangement? b. How did the diversity of Instruments affect the creating process? c. What was a creative technique that your group used to create the characteristics of the blues scale? Next Class: Each Student will be responsible for THREE things next class 1. Create a 12 Bar progression in a key of your choosing 2. Come up with a couple of different themes. Think about why you chose the rhythmic/melodic patterns you did. 3. List ways of how you were able to create a part overtop of your progression.

Notes/Extension: The overall objective of the lesson is to have students create with the mindset of understanding process. As the lesson progresses, I will add certain practice tips that can be applied within most music fields.
