The Sun
Delran residents should be ad-
vised that there has been a slew
of bears sighted walking through
the township holding a trophy.
They are considered friendly and
in a celebratory mood as the Del-
ran High School boys soccer
team is celebrating a Group II
state championship.
Really excited for our guys,
head coach Mike Otto said. They
earned it.
Delrans resume as a regional
soccer power has become un-
questioned. The Bears have won
eight Group II championships,
including five under Otto.
Six if you count the one I won
as a player in 1988, he said.
Delran won consecutive titles
in 2008 and 2009 but have not cap-
tured a crown since. When youve
experienced as much success as
theyve had, the expectation is
simple more success.
We expect to win a state title
every year. I dont mean that in
an arrogant or cocky way, but
thats what we work for. Thats
the ultimate goal, Otto said be-
fore the season. If you enter the
season not expecting to compete
for a state championship, then
whats the point?
That confidence was tested
throughout this season.
At the beginning of the year, I
was pretty confident because I
knew the group of guys we had
and their talent level. During the
season, I still thought that but we
had to come together as a team.
We had some issues with posi-
tions, and as a coaching staff, we
needed to develop a system for
this specific group of guys, Otto
said. We put together an 11-
game winning streak and you
could feel the momentum build-
ing.
Otto credited his senior class
for bringing the team together.
Doug Denny was a leader
with how he performed on the
field all season. Tristan Rafanello
was a wall on defense and Nick
Stone was great for us all year. I
really think hes developed into
one of the better goalkeepers in
the state, Otto said. All the cred-
it goes to our seniors. Ive always
felt that any seniors can lead re-
gardless of playing time and
those guys really stepped up this
year and held us together.
The Bears certainly had a flair
for the dramatic, as three of the
teams four playoff games were
decided in overtime, including
the clincher against Newton
High School on Nov. 24.

ulation, we were called for a
handball that gave them a penal-
ty kick which ultimately tied the
game. For a lot of teams, that
might be rock bottom but it really
inspired this group, Otto said.
It says a lot about this team and
their ability to stick together.
Delran did itself no favors
with scheduling. They already
play in a division in which every
team was .500 or better last sea-
son, including Holmdel who elim-
inated the Bears from the Central
Jersey tournament.
The program prides itself on
playing tough out-of-division op-
ponents as well.
We do play a tough schedule,
but Ive always felt that its great
for our development. We dont
play in the South Jersey coaches
tournament because we feel our
schedule prepares us for states,
Otto said. The guys responded
to playing a tough schedule this
year and took it on head-on. It
was a great season by them and
by our coaches.

Y
ouve heard it time and again
lately, but its worth repeating:
Shop local this holiday season!
Were already two weeks into this
shortened holiday shopping season
since Thanksgiving was so late this
year but if you havent already fin-
ished your shopping, you should
strongly consider buying as local as
you possibly can.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the re-
gion, has immense benefits on the
local economy.
Even companies as large as Ameri-
can Express are touting the impor-
tance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Just last year, a
study reported an estimated $5.5 bil-
lion was spent at small businesses on
that day in 2012!
A vibrant and successful local busi-
ness community has a trickle-down ef-
fect on our own pockets. Just think:
Successful local businesses make
other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more rata-
bles, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attrac-
tive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, sup-
port your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
struggling with a still-rebounding
economy and a holiday shopping sea-
son that is six days shorter than nor-
mal. Lets all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.
Shop local!
This holiday season, support local businesses

Delran offers plethora of events
By KRYSTAL TOMASSO
The Sun
The holidays are swiftly approaching
and in the midst of shopping, overeating
and juggling business, Delran has events to
slow the pace. They range from creating a
work of light art to a dinner theater. Below
are the details on festive Delran events that
are right around the corner.
Delran Holiday House Competition
Delran Township has invited residents
to put their holiday spirit on display. This
is the first year of the Delran Holiday
House Competition.
This competition is for Delran residents
only. Residents can only nominate their
own house.
Judging will be limited to what can be
seen from the street or sidewalks at night,

The Delran High School boys soccer team defeated Newton High School 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 24 to
clinch the Group II state championship. The title is Delrans eighth Group II championship, with the fifth
under head coach Mike Otto. The Bears finished the season 19-6-1.
Delran tops Newton, 3-2
The following information was
provided by the Burlington Coun-
ty Prosecutors Office.
The public is being asked to
provide information in an at-
tempt to help solve three bank
robberies that took place earlier
this month in Delran, Mount Lau-
rel and Willingboro that law en-
forcement officials believe may be
connected.
For reasons that cannot be di-
vulged due to the ongoing investi-
gation, law enforcement officials
suspect the robberies described
below may have been committed
by the same individual or individ-
uals who are working together.
In Delran on Nov. 8 at 5:20 p.m.,
a male entered the Roma Bank lo-
cated at 80 Hartford Road and
handed a slip to the teller indicat-
ing he had a gun and instructed
her to hand over cash. The sus-
pect took the money and fled the
bank.
In Mt. Laurel on Nov. 8 at 6:30
p.m., a male wearing a ski mask
entered the Beneficial Bank locat-
ed at 3220 Route 38. The suspect
displayed a handgun and de-
manded money, which was given
to him by a teller. In Willingboro
on Nov. 15 at 5:54 p.m., a male en-
tered the TD Bank located at 13
Levitt Parkway and handed a
teller a note indicating he had a
gun and demanding money.
These cases are being jointly
investigated by the Delran Police
Department, the Mt. Laurel Po-
lice Department, the Willingboro
Police Department and the Feder-
al Bureau of Investigation.
Roma Bank and the FBI have
posted a $1,000 reward for infor-
mation leading to an arrest and
conviction.
Anyone with information that
may be useful to this investiga-
tion is asked to call Burlington
County Central Communications
at (609) 267-8300.

Annual county
toy drive is
underway
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield announced that
her departments annual Toy
Drive is officially underway, and
that residents and businesses can
donate toys for children of fami-
lies in need numerous drop-offs
located throughout the County.
Stanfield said that the collec-
tion would continue until Dec. 20,
when sheriff s officers will gather
up the bins, and return them to
the county complex. Toys will
then be safety checked by the
Burlington County Department
of Consumer Affairs. Human
service agencies will work with
the sheriff to distribute the toys.

County sheriffs department
cracking down on drunk drivers
The Burlington County Sher-
iff s Department will be cracking
down on drunk drivers as part of
the annual holiday season Drive
Sober or Get Pulled Over
statewide campaign. Running
through Jan. 2, local and state law
enforcement officials will con-
duct saturation patrols and sobri-
ety checkpoints looking for mo-
torists who may be driving while
intoxicated.
A concentrated national effort,
the campaign helps to raise
awareness about the dangers of
drinking and driving through
high-visibility enforcement and
public education tools.
As part of this program our
department received a $4,400
grant, which will allow us to pro-
vide 88 hours of enforcement
throughout the county," sheriff
Jean Stanfield said. This effort
will bring attention to the serious
consequences of drunk driving
and the grave danger those who
choose to drink and drive pose to
all who share the road with
them.
Last year in New Jersey, 19 per-
cent of all motor vehicle fatalities
were alcohol-related. Nationally,
during the combined months of
December in 2007-2011, there were
4,169 people killed in drunk driv-
ing crashes.
Stanfield offered the following
advice to help residents avoid the
dangers of drunk driving:
Take mass transit, a taxicab,
or ask a sober friend to drive you
home.
Spend the night where the ac-
tivity is held.
If you see an impaired driver
on the road, contact law enforce-
ment. Your actions may save
someones life, and inaction could
cost a life.
Always buckle-up, every ride.
Its your best defense against an
impaired driver.
If you are intoxicated and
traveling on foot, the safest way to
get home is to take a cab or have a
sober friend or family member
drive or escort you to your
doorstep.
Be responsible. If someone
you know is drinking, do not let
that person get behind the wheel.
