LeadershipAcademyInternswithU.S.DistrictCourtJudgeRonaldS.W.LewandDirector ofProgramsGraceHsieh Thisyear,wewerefortunatetohavehostedagroupofnineextremelytalentedstudentsinour LeadershipAcademyinternshipprogram.Throughoutthecourseofeightweeks(fromJune17thto August9th),theinternsnotonlyworkedattheirrespectivelegislativeoffices,butalsoparticipated inprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopswithesteemedmembersofthecommunity,attended numerousnetworkingevents,andtackledagroupresearchproject.Theintensiveinternship programclosedoffwithatriptoSacramento,wheretheinternsparticipatedintheAnnual LegislativeLeadershipConference.Theymetwithlegislativeofficialswhotookthemonatourof thestatecapitolandspokecandidlytothemabouttheirexperiencesofworkingaselectedofficials. ThroughouttheirtimeinSacramento,theinternsmetwithpanelsofspeakers,whodiscussed everythingfrompublicpolicytolobbying.Onalegislativepanel,theinternslearnedfirsthandthe experiencesofthelegislativestaffers.Theyalsoheardfromvariousadvocacyandlobbygroups. Thestudentstookadvantageoftheintimatesettingoftheforumstoaskthespeakersaboutthe legislativeprocess,issuesconcerningtheAPIcommunity,politicalcareers,andspecific legislations.
