Paris
From 69 return Paris will be vibrant with colour and music this summer as a packed programme of festivals, shows, celebrations and events gets underway. Across the city, music of all kinds will be celebrated with free concerts in museums, gardens, restaurants, bars and even churches during the Fte de la Musique on 21 June. The Cathedral of Notre Dame hits its 850th anniversary this year, while just outside Paris at the Palace of Versailles a very different (but equally impressive) example of extravagant French architecture awaits. Just 50 mins away by train, Monets garden at Giverny provides a cool, blissful retreat from the city. Nice
From 119 return The Cote dAzurs cosmopolitan capital, Nice is a seductive mix of chic French style and good Mediterranean living. Theres something for everybody here, from jet skiing in the curved Bay of Angels to people spotting on the long, palm-tree lined Promenade des Anglais. The pebbled beaches polished by the azure waters of the Mediterranean are lined with hip cafs and bars, and lively outdoor markets sell flowers, local crafts and antiques. Walkers head for the hills outside the city, or go just an hour inland and you could be hiking in the Southern Alps. Otherwise, hire a car or take a local train to explore this spectacular coastline, pausing for a classic Salade Nioise (anchovies, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, black olives, French beans and hard boiled eggs) along the way. Journey: London to Paris, then high speed TGV to Nice Journey time: 9 hours More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/nice
Montpellier
From 119 return Montpellier contrasts its medieval past with the youthful vibe of a university city. Its a beautiful spot at any time of the year but in summertime, as sunlight bounces off the terracotta rooftops and caf culture spills onto the old winding lanes, it is perhaps at its best. Place de la Comdie is the place to see and be seen. This stately square, draped around an elegant fountain and flanked by impressive 19th-century buildings, is the heart of the city. Other attractions include the oldest botanical gardens in France, the impressive new Mare Nostrum aquarium and the huge Amazonian greenhouse at Montpellier zoo. Theres a great gastronomic tradition in the city look out for local oysters, escargots or bourride, a spicy fish dish matched only by the superb Languedoc wines. Journey: London to Paris, then high speed TGV to Montpellier Journey time: 7 hours More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/montpellier
Bordeaux
From 109 return One of the most beautiful cities in France, the old centre of Bordeaux has been painstakingly restored over the past decade. Its glorious by day but at night, when many of the finest old buildings are lit, the city is even more striking. Today futuristic trams glide through the ancient city centre, providing a startling contrast to the elegant 18th-century facades. Buy a day ticket for about 3 and you can jump on and off until 1am a great way to get around. Another way to see the city is on a guided tour on foot, by bus or even by bike! Bordeaux is the worlds wine capital, so naturally it is everywhere. Museums, cellars, tours even the Bordeaux wine school, where you can become a wine connoisseur yourself! Journey: London to Paris, then high speed TGV to Bordeaux Journey time: 6 hours 45 mins More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/bordeaux
Perpignan
From 119 return Perpignan is unlike any other city in France. Nestled at the foot of the Pyrenees just 30 miles from the Spanish border, it combines Catalan, Roman and Mediterranean cultures. This is best seen in high summer when the Jeudis de Perpignan sees acrobats, jugglers, street artists and dancers (flamenco, salsa, jazz, samba you name it) take to the streets. This year the festival will take place every Thursday evening from 18 July to 22 August so if you like eating, drinking and partying al fresco, this is the time to go. Sant Joan another major festival takes place on 23 June when ceremonial fires, fireworks and traditional Sardana dancing will keep the city jumping til dawn. And if you feel peckish after all the revelry, the Spanish-influenced cuisine and fresh seafood are reasons to visit on their own! Journey: London to Lille, then high speed TGV to Perpignan Journey time: 8 hours 30 mins More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/perpignan
Marseille
From 119 return If youve never been to Marseille before, this is the year to go. European Capital of Culture 2013, the city is hosting a long and lively programme of events, and opening some sensational new galleries and museums. Seen from the water, Marseille has a rosy, apricot hue. Terracotta roofs on pale stone buildings arc back up the hill from the lively Vieux Port (Old Port), while the historic Le Panier quarter offers elegant terraced houses. Down on the waterfront, the harbourside is the setting for Marseille's daily fishmarket. Dont miss an evening in this colourful, vibrant setting a spot of people watching over a bowl of bona fide bouillabaisse is not to be missed. Journey: London to Paris, then high speed TGV to Marseille Journey time: 6 hours 30 mins More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/marseille
Angoulme
From 109 return Handsome, hilltop Angoulme, sometimes referred to as the balcony of the south west, perches on a plateau above the Charente. This is a city of grand, graceful architecture, a legacy of conquest and re-conquest dating back to the 6th century. The walls that once embraced and protected Angoulme have been replaced by a boulevard called The Remparts, from where you can get glorious views of the Charente Valley below. Go in September and the same streets host the annual Circuit des Remparts a classic car race of high speed driving and hairpin bends. Angoulme is the Comic Book Capital of France; kids will love the brightly coloured comic strips and murals painted on walls of the old town. Journey: London to Paris, then high speed TGV to Angoulme Journey time: 6 hours More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/angouleme

Thalys has revolutionised rail travel between France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Services from Paris and Brussels are frequent and fast, and when you link with Eurostar youll enjoy high speed rail travel all the way from the UK. Leave London before breakfast; arrive in time for lunch. What could be easier?
Rotterdam
From 121 return Rotterdam has a young edge that makes it unlike any other city in the Netherlands. Heavy shelling reduced it to rubble in WW2, and since then it has been continuously rebuilding, redefining and reinventing itself. Its now known as the architectural capital of the Netherlands, and little wonder. Rotterdam is a modern, urban powerhouse under a skyline that never sleeps. The city is very multicultural, with great nightlife and a buzzing arts scene. One memorable way to see Rotterdam is on an amphibious bus tour, or stay on the water with a cruise around the harbour of Europes busiest port. If you like music, try to time your visit for the Metropolis Festival on 7 July, and if you like cars go for the City Racing on 18 August, when Formula 1 comes to the streets of Rotterdam! Journey: London to Brussels, then high speed Thalys to Rotterdam Journey time: 4 hours More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/rotterdam
Amsterdam
From 121 return Amsterdam is a famously open, welcoming and tolerant city. With its cool bars, relaxed coffee houses, hip clubs and quirky shops, it might seem like a place to chill out rather than sightsee. But Amsterdam is crammed with masterpieces, from the Van Gogh Museum, which holds the worlds largest collection of the great mans work, to the Golden Age treasures that hang in the recently refurbished Rijksmuseum. Besides its world class museums and art galleries, Amsterdams genteel canals, with their famous backdrop of quaint gabled architecture, are a delight to explore. Take two wheels there are loads of bike rental shops or jump on a canal boat for a more leisurely tour of the city, making sure you pause at an al fresco bar or caf to enjoy Amsterdams unique, laid back vibe. Journey: London to Brussels, then high speed Thalys to Amsterdam Journey time: 4 hours 45 mins More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/amsterdam
Cologne
From 103 return At first glance Cologne might seem like a rather serious, sedate city. Steeped in history, the Old Town is crowded with old buildings and medieval churches that seem to greet you at every turn. But stay awhile and youll see another side to the city. Cologne is a great place to just chill out, with trendy vintage clothes and thrift shops, designer stores and chic boutiques rubbing shoulders with lively brauhauses (beerhouses) that serve Kolsch into the early hours. One great place to taste the local beer is Paffgen, a huge German beerhall (with a great beergarden!) thats been open for business since 1883. Another sign that this city isnt just about history one of its most popular attractions is the Chocolate Museum which holds a prime position, right on the banks of the Rhine. Journey: London to Brussels, then high speed Thalys to Cologne Journey time: 4 hours 15 mins More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/cologne
Aachen
From 103 return Aachen is a beautiful, green city located on Germanys western border with Belgium and the Netherlands. Its a relatively small place, easily explored on foot, but its packed with historic buildings and has a powerful history that reaches back into the Middle Ages when Emperor Charlemagne made it the centre of his empire. Its famous cathedral was the first German building to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status and its Gothic town hall dates back to the early 14th century. The Romans came to Aachen because of its now famous thermal springs. Spouting the hottest running water in Europe, you can test (and smell!) them at the Elisa Fountain in the city centre. Taste a printen, Aachens own spicy biscuit baked with cinnamon, aniseed, cloves, cardamom, coriander, allspice and ginger. Journey: London to Brussels, then high speed Thalys to Aachen Journey time: 3 hours 30 mins More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/aachen
Journey time: 1 hour 49 minutes, up to 11 departures per day from 26 one way Day 4. This is a perfect place for sightseeing, with guided tours available on foot or even by bike for visitors 365 days a year. The Plaza Mayor is a focal point of Madrid. This huge central square is encircled by grand three-storey buildings graced with arcades, porticoes and no less than 237 balconies! Journey: London to Paris, then overnight Elipsos Trenhotel to Madrid Journey time: 19 hours More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/madrid
Figueres
By day from 157 return Overnight from 202 return Figueres is perhaps best known as the birthplace of the surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. Some of his most famous work is displayed in a museum dedicated to his, sometimes bizarre, view of the world. But Figueres is about more than Salvador Dali. The city stands at the heart of Catalonia, and is the perfect springboard into the coast, mountains and the rugged Costa Brava. Nearby Colera is a seaside village with uncrowded beaches, whilst Llan offers a lively marina. Wherever you go, Catalan cuisine takes the best from the sea and the mountains: fish, chicken, rabbit, lobster, wild mushrooms preferably washed down with some of the regions wonderful wines or cava. Journey: London to Paris, then high speed TGV to Figueres by day, or overnight Elipsos Trenhotel to Figueres Journey time: 9 hours 30 mins by day, 13 hours 15 mins overnight More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/figueres
Girona
By day from 169 return Overnight from 202 return Northern Catalonias largest city nestles in a valley 22 miles from the coast. This whole area is influenced by the Spanish medieval period, which left a legacy of monasteries, grand castles and Gothic religious buildings. Its well worth climbing the 90-step baroque staircase to the citys 14th-century cathedral. Inside youll find Europes widest Gothic nave at 23 metres, while in the museum next door you can admire the masterly Tapestry of the Creation, a Romanesque embroidery depicting the Garden of Eden. Out of town, why not head to some of the finest beaches on the Costa Brava or venture into the foothills of the Girona Pyrenees to find peaceful valleys and rolling green plains. Turin
From 121 return With its elegant squares, colonnaded walkways, cobblestoned streets and Baroque buildings, Turin is a great destination for a summer city break. It boasts classy cafs, funky bars and contemporary art houses equal to those in Italys more illustrious cities, but Turin is small, spacious and easy to get around. The River Po flows right through the city, bringing with it opportunities for rowing, rafting, kayaking and even punting. The mountains to the west of Turin hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics, and in summer the same slopes attract hikers, walkers and mountain biking enthusiasts with their miles of marked trails. Turin claims to have invented aperitivo usually from 6-9pm when bars and cafs offer free bar food and nibbles to their patrons. Journey: London to Paris, then high speed to Turin Journey time: 9 hours More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/turin
Verona
By day from 160 return Overnight from 212 return The setting for Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, the romance in Verona seems palpable. Couples flock to a 14th-century house in the city to see the famous narrow stone balcony where Juliet is said to have been wooed, while lovers of opera cherish life-long ambitions to see the opera house. This spectacular Roman Arena, built of pink-tinged marble in 1BC, seats 30,000 people. Its where Placido Domingo made his debut, and for the best views of the city take the lift (or the stairs!) to the top of the Lamberti Tower. Or for fabulous views at ground level, head for the Giardino Giusti. Just a short walk from the city centre, this serene Renaissance garden is one of the most beautiful in Europe. Sicily
Messina from 315 return Palermo from 343 return Sicily is startlingly beautiful. The largest island in the Mediterranean, it gives you a totally different flavour of Italy with spectacular hills, a smoking volcano and exquisite sandy beaches. Rabbit Beach, on the island of Lampedusa on the south coast of Sicily, has been called the most beautiful beach on earth, while Mount Etna is the worlds second most active volcano and the second highest peak in Western Europe after Mont Blanc. Between these two extremes, Taormina perches on a terrace of Monte Tauro, offering breathtaking views over the Bay of Naxos below, and drawing thousands of visitors to its summer festival each year. Journey: London to Paris, overnight to Rome, then day train to Messina or Palermo, Sicily Journey time: 28 hours to Messina, 31 hours 30 mins to Palermo
Milan

Home to great architecture, world-class fashion houses, hip clubs, chic boutiques and an avant-garde arts scene, its the perfect destination for a summer city break. Fashion and football are the big passions here. Some of the most iconic designers including Armani, Prada, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana were first seen on the Milan catwalks, and the city is also home to two of the most famous football teams in the world AC Milan and Inter Milan. It gets hot here in August. Some shops close, and many of the locals are on holiday, so if you dont mind the heat its a good time to visit everyone else is at the beach! And if you do get hot, head to a gelateria for some authentic Italian ice-cream! Florence
By day from 238 return Overnight from 212 return Florence can look and feel just like a film set. Its beauty is extraordinary, as is its art, style and architecture. The skyline is breathtaking, with Giottos Campanile, Brunelleschis Dome and the Basilica di Santa Croce giving it a timeless beauty. The jewel of Renaissance Italy, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Botticelli have all left their mark. The Medici family commanded Florences fortunes for centuries, and their family crest of six balls adorns many public buildings. Florence is a great base from which to explore the treasures of Tuscany. The medieval splendours of Siena, Pisa, Lucca and San Gimignano as well as the enchanting Chianti countryside can all easily be enjoyed in a day. Naples
By day from 291 return Overnight from 341 return Naples basks in the sun around the bay that gave it its name. Mount Vesuvius is clearly visible on the skyline. The volcano devastated the Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD, and a day trip to these breathtaking, evocative ruins is not to be missed. Jazz fans should head to Bourbon Street where smooth American and Italian jazz is performed almost every night. If youre feeling peckish afterwards youre in for a treat. Naples invented pizza, and Da Michele is Naples most famous pizzeria. It only sells two types: margherita (tomato, basil and mozzarella) and marinara (tomatoes, garlic and oregano) but when its the best pizza in town, why bother selling more? Switzerland by train
London to Zurich from 114 return Few countries are as well suited to rail travel as Switzerland, and getting there couldnt be easier! Simply take Eurostar to Paris, connect with a high speed TGV Lyria service through France and over the Swiss border. In around three hours from Paris, you could find yourself in Geneva or Basel, or in just over four hours step off in Zurich, in the heart of Switzerland. If you want to explore beyond the cities, it makes sense to buy a Swiss Pass.
Bernina Express
Only three rail journeys in the world include sections that have UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and the Bernina Express is one of them. Pictures of the little red train making its way across the Swiss Alps have been gracing the pages of travel brochures and enticing travellers to Switzerland for many years, and little wonder. This incredible route takes you through 55 tunnels, over 196 bridges and up amazingly steep gradients. Taking you over viaducts, past glaciers, beside lakes and via the spectacular 2253-metre Bernina Pass, youll enjoy expansive, uninterrupted views through the generous panoramic windows as this four-hour journey wends its way from Chur, Switzerlands oldest city, to historic Tirano just across the border in Italy.
GoldenPass Line
This epic train journey takes you from the fashionable Swiss Riviera on the Swiss French border to the alpine city of Lucerne, right in the heart of Switzerland. Water could be said to be a central theme on this trip, as the three-train, five-hour route features no less than seven Swiss lakes along the way. The scenery is vast and varied, from verdant valleys and vineyards to spectacular mountain passes, thunderous waterfalls to the steely surface of the lakes themselves. Starting on the shores of palm-tree-lined Lake Geneva, The GoldenPass Line showcases Lakes Thun, Brienz, Lungern, Sarnen and Alpnach, and even includes a ride on the first panorama train in the world.
Innsbruck
From 228 return The capital of the Alps is transformed into a nature lover's paradise in the summer months. Without their cloak of snow, the meadows and mountains are criss-crossed with walking routes and mountain bike trails, with each turn offering more dramatic and beautiful views than the one before. The city itself has much to offer too, from imperial treasures left by the mighty Hapsburg rulers to contemporary urban design, including the Bergisel Ski Jump stadium designed by Zaha Hadid. Jazz fans head to Innsbruck for the annual New Orleans Festival, this year planned for 18-21 July, but its ideal for a city break too with its chic shops, great galleries, world-class museums and fabulous cafs and bars perfect for summer dining al fresco! Perhaps they were inspired by its beauty; Vienna boasts some of the most magnificent buildings and boulevards in Europe. See some of its most important sights on the Ring Tram, which follows the historic Ringstrasse around the old city. You can get a great view from the famous giant ferris-wheel at the Prater, or take the lift up 826 feet to the top of the Danube Tower, perhaps pausing for lunch at 564 feet in the revolving restaurant! Otherwise rent a bike and head along the famous Danube Cycle Path, or just stroll around this supremely elegant city, refuelling at a Wrstelstand (sausage stand) or Kaffeehaus (traditional coffee house) along the way.
