CHARLES WILLING 1738C1788

The portrait of Charles WILLING 1738-1788, which appears on the opposite page, is in the collection of
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and is here published by kind permission of that society to whom we are
indebted for kindly calling our attention to the portrait and for sending us the photograph. Charles WILLING, of
Pennsylvania was the second son of Charles and Anne (née SHIPPEN) WILLING and was a merchant of
Barbados. Charles WILLING the younger was born on 30th. May 1738, he married in Barbados on 24th. May
1760 Elizabeth Hannah CARRINGTON, born 12th. March, 1740 and died 12th. October, 1795. Charles
WILLING predeceased his wife by dying on 22nd. March, 1788.

Elizabeth Hannah WILLING, née CARRINGTON, came of a family long settled in Barbados. She was
the daughter of Paul CARRINGTON, (1706-1750) and his wife Mary, née GRAY, of St. Michael. Mrs WILLING
was one of several children. Her grandfather was Dr. Paul CARRINGTON, of St. Philip, Barbados, who was
presumed to have died at sea in 1716. Her grandmother, Mrs. Hemingham CARRINGTON was born in 1671. No
marriage has been traced between her grandparents and it would appear that Dr. Paul CARRINGTON was married
in 1687 to Thomasine WATERLAND who died in 1727. Both Dr. Paul CARRINGTON in 1716 and Mrs.
Thomasine CARRINGTON in 1727 mention certain of their joint issue. In his will, however, Dr. Paul
CARRINGTON describes Mrs. Hemingham CARRINGTON as his wife and mentions certain of his issue who are
also mentioned in the will of Mrs. Hemingham CARRINGTON in 1745. Amongst those described as a son is Paul
and his daughter Elizabeth Hannah is also mentioned.
Whatever may be the real truth of Dr. Paul CARRINGTON=s marriages [?], two of his sons, like his
granddaughter Elizabeth Hannah WILLING, went to live in America. George CARRINGTON, baptised at St.
Philip=s Church in 1711, settled in Virginia in 1727. He married first in 1732, Anne MAYO, the daughter of
William MAYO, the celebrated map-maker of Barbados. His second marriage was to Frances, daughter of Enoch
GOULD, who had issue who married into the CABELL family of Virginia. Another son, Edward CARRINGTON,
baptised at St. Philip=s Parish Church in 1715, signed his will on 5th May 1736, intending a voyage to Virginia.
His wife Jane, née GIBBS, whom he married in 1734 is not mentioned in his will and is therefore presumed to
have died before that date. Edward CARRINGTON=s will was entered at Barbados in 1745.
