Wes Malott Wins PBA Cheetah Championship for Ninth Career Title
PBA World Series of Bowling V series introduces blue oil to TV fans
By Bill Vint - PBA
LAS VEGAS Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, capped a three-match sweep in the finals of the Professional Bowlers Association Cheetah Championship, defeating top qualifier Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., in the title match of the historic ESPN telecast, 243-169, for his ninth career PBA Tour title. The first of seven telecasts from PBA World Series of Bowling V at South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center aired on ESPN, and featured the use of a highly-visible blue oil on the lanes for the first time in PBA history. Malott, in winning his second consecutive title, defeated Colombia native Clara Guerrero, 214-208, in the opening match, and was nearly perfect in ousting 51-year-old PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 288-242, in advancing to the title match. Guerrero, only the third woman ever to advance to the nationally-televised championship round of a PBA Tour event, made a short-lived, but exciting appearance. The 31-year-old former Wichita State University star now married and an American citizen living not far from Malott in Pflugerville took a 15-pin lead over Malott into the eighth frame of the opening match. But Malott finished with a string of five strikes to eliminate Guerrero, 214-208, and exorcise a personal demon. In two previous nationally-televised matches against another woman star, Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., Malott lost both times. He committed a foul that contributed to a 235-228 loss to Johnson in the 2005 PBA Banquet Open (the first time a woman had ever appeared on a PBA Tour telecast), and in July, after he won the U.S. Open in Columbus, Ohio, Malott lost a special Battle of the Sexes match against Johnson, the Womens U.S. Open winner, 194-188. There was a lot riding on this show, especially for me, Malott said. The first match against Clara the lady I obviously remembered my foul against Liz and losing to Liz at the U.S. Open. I needed to get that off my back. As much as I acted like it wasnt there, it was on the back of my mind. I told myself at the end of the match I couldnt give up and let it happen again, so I wanted to put the pressure on her and I was fortunate to come out the winner. For Guerrero, just the opportunity was a dream, she said. Every time you see the guys on TV, you want to compete with them, beat them. So being here, having the opportunity to bowl against the greatest bowlers in the world, it was a dream. It was the best part of my career.
Tom Twist 300-840 at Wallington Jonathan Norcia, Kevin Jackson, Carlos Gonzalez 300
By Gloria Volpe WALLINGTON, NJ - Very exciting week for the Bud Light Tuesday 4-Man league that saw Tom Twist slam out a 300 in his 840 high for the night series and also posting perfect 300 games were Jonathan Norcia, Kevin Tito Jackson, and Carlos Gonzalez. Joe DAngelo along with TJ Valentin both tossed a 279 game followed by Jeff Di Domenico with 277, Gabriel Tineo 269, Kevin Matawa 269,Anderson Chae 267, Maarc L Heureux 260, Victor Mendoza 259, Tony Lore 247 along with Joe Prenenski, Paul Stamos, Jeff DiDomenico and Tom Twist who had 2 247s.

Cheetah Champion Wes Malott. After closing out Guerrero with his string of five strikes, Malott added another 10 in a row against Weber, losing his shot at a perfect game when he left a 10 pin on his 11th shot. That might have been the best shot I threw all day, Malott said of the 11th shot. Id throw that one again a million times. He continued his torrid pace, striking on seven of his first eight shots in racing away from Bohn in the title match. Against Pete, both of us are kind of in the running for player of the year, and I thought I would help my chances by winning that match, Malott said, but I also had to beat Parker to win the title, so every match meant a lot. I just worried about myself and did what I could to win back-to-back titles (the Cheetah Championship was the first PBA Tour event since the U.S. Open), and its a great feeling. The Cheetah Championship was the first time a lane conditioning oil with a color additive had ever been used in a PBA Tour championship event, and it was praised by both Guerrero and Malott. I saw it, Guerrero said. I thought it was going to be a little different. I thought Id see the lines on the bowling ball, but it didnt bother me at all. I think its cool for the audience to actually see the oil and understand the game a little more, but I just ignored it. See Wes

J o a n Ta y l o r s . . . . . Te n P i n R a p . . . . .
Every time I see bowling published or broadcast in a non-bowling scenario I am proud and happy. Im not talking about the media that would make fun of our sport, but rather those who recognize it as fun or challenging. Here is a sampling of what I saw recently, and I welcome any observations from our readers as well. Vizio has come up with a recording program with an example of people bowling and being able to replay it on their laptops. The hit television comedy, The Middle showed the beleaguered parents finally having time to themselves and they look at each other with loving eyes and the wife says, You know what would be fun? The husband replies, Bowling! They take off for the local bowling center and have a great time. There is a television ad for the NCAA regarding scholar athletes, and in one segment a collegian is bowling and a marching band is following her, indicating recognition for her sport. At a science fair and expo I attended in New York, a graduate student demonstrated senior citizen activities and their purpose. One of her activities was bowling which she said was fun for seniors and increased their mobility. The AARP newsletter featured 99 Great Ways to Save Money and under Family Gifts they suggested, a gift card the whole family can use such as movies, bowling, or a ball game. Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park, NJ (the home of Ken Yokoboskys pro shop) was used as a backdrop and example in a commercial for the Bank of America. While filming in Australia, it was noted that Angelina Jolie brought her 6 children to the Strike Bowling Center in Sydney for some family fun. Film star Vince Vaughan was on the Ellen (DeGeneres) Show and when Ellen asked if he did something special for his 40th birthday, he said he went bowling with his family. Seinfeld creator Larry David said he bowls every ten years when he takes some time off and says that because hes been away from it so long he thinks, Boy, this is some interesting game, this bowling. Look at what Im doing. Its fun. There have been many more that I didnt note, but suffice to say, the treatment of bowling in the media has finally made a turn from the Flintstone, Honeymooners, and Dagwood days of treating it as a joke and as something to be downplayed by the spouses of the men in each of these families. Now that I think of it, Married With Children had an episode, which was not your sanctioned league play, but it did show friendly competition between Peg and Al and in her heels and stretch pants, Peg rolled a 300 game. The same was portrayed in The Andy Griffith Show when Howard Sprague eventually, after a blackout, completed his 300 game. That one was sanctioned and abided by the then ABC rules. There is hope! There is always hope! If you're looking for Christmas or holiday gifts for that bowler on your list the possibilities are wide in range and cost. Personal equipment rates high, starting with a bowling ball. Each year 75 to 100 bowling balls make their debut. They go from a child's starting weight of six pounds to the maximum of 16 pounds. They come in dozens of colors, various cover compositions, some with pictures or objects such as flowers, sculls, boxing gloves or scenic logos implanted. They even come in different scents. In price, bowling balls range from about $60 to as high as $300. You can purchase a blank ball, to be drilled later to the specifications best fitted to the recipient. Avoid pre-drilled balls. There are bowling bags and bowling bags, to hold your ball and whatever else you might need on your bowling outings. You can find a simple single ball bag for as little as $15, and jump to a super six ball carrier for as much as $400. Shoes are important, and they come in all styles, colors, and materials, some with changeable soles and heels to adjust to different approach surfaces. There are also high heeled bowling shoes, but they are made for showing and jesting, not bowling. Shoes will cost you $25 for those to get you by to almost $300 for perfect and personal foot fits. Bowling shirts, slacks, ties and kerchiefs are available as are jackets and rain gear. Jewelry of all kind, rings, watches, belt buckles, bracelets and replicas of lanes, balls and pins can be engraved with a bowler's memorable performances. One of the most helpful, economical and appreciated gifts for a bowler is an accessory kit. The products included inside can feature slip-on bowling socks, tape of all kinds, bandages, product to cover bruised areas creating a new skin, ball cleaner, record books, handicap manuals, something to help you slide or stop sliding, finger inserts, wrist and arm bands of all types, resin bags and towels. There are many type of bowling gloves---some that even provide the power of magnets. There are the long used accessories, and new ones appear regularly. They range from less than a dollar to $20 or more and you can decide how much you want to spend and how many items you want to include. A thoughtful and always well received gift is free practice games, membership in bowling organizations and pre paid entries into tournaments. There are local, state, and national events in the list of the 10,000 tournaments conducted worldwide. And that's a gift that could keep giving in the way of large cash and merchandise prizes. Bowling publications, books, movies and videos abound. But if you are giving instructional materials, don't overdo it. One good book or video is enough, two or three might give too much to absorb at once. Follow up later with another teaching aid. There are magazines available that regularly feature all phases of instruction. The ultimate, of course, is to gift someone with his or her own personal lane, installed in an attic, basemen or beside a home. Price? Start at $10,000 and go up and up, and up.

Malott agreed. Everyone was concerned about what the dye was going to do to the oil, but I really didnt move for all three games, he said. Because I bowled all three games playing the same line, so you could see the track of the ball. Thats what I was curious about. This oil could be very educating for the fans and outsiders to help them understand what were dealing with, and to see how accurate we are, he added. To me thats more important than what the oil did to us. I dont think it affected anything performance-wise. Im kind of excited about it. The blue oil will be used in all four animal pattern championship finals held during the World Series. The Viper Championship presented by PBA Bowling Challenge will air next Sunday, Dec. 8, followed by the Chameleon Championship on Dec. 15 and the Scorpion Championship on Dec. 22. All December telecasts begin at 1 p.m. ET. The Cheetah Championship telecast also included the first of four special PBA League Challenge segments, allowing the eight PBA League franchise players to demonstrate their skills in unique competitions. The first segment was a blind bowling event in which a large curtain was suspended over the lanes, hiding the pins from the players and leaving only the first part of the lanes visible for targeting. Each player bowled a ninth and 10th frame, and Weber the franchise player for the PBA League New York City WTT KingPins won the initial round of challenge competition by throwing four strikes for a perfect score of 60. In the light-hearted competition, BROOKLYN STyLES franchise player Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., asked for a re-rack (despite not being able to see the pins) and competitors jokingly complained that Dallas Strikers franchise player Norm Duke had an unfair advantage because hes so short, he could see under curtain. After winning the round, Weber said, I didnt have to shoot any spares, so whats the big deal? I spot at the foul line, so shooting spares wouldnt have been a problem if I had needed to shoot at one. I never even saw the screen.
