CallforPapers:InterventionstoReduceTobaccoRelatedHealthDisparities Tobaccousecontinuestobetheleadingglobalcauseofpreventabledeaths.Onagloballevel,tobaccokills approximately6millionpeopleandcausesmorethanhalfatrilliondollarsofeconomicdamageeachyear.Ifthe currenttrendcontinuesunabated,tobaccowillkillmorethan8millionpeopleworldwideby2030(WHOreport ontheglobaltobaccoepidemic,2011:warningaboutthedangersoftobacco).Despiteprogressinreducing cigarettesmokingamongthegeneralpopulationintheUnitedStatesandotherhighincomecountries,tobacco relateddisparitiesremainamajorproblem.Tobaccorelateddisparitiesaredifferencesinpatterns,prevention, andtreatmentoftobaccouse;therisk,incidence,morbidity,mortality,andburdenoftobaccorelatedillness thatexistamongspecificpopulationgroups;andrelateddifferencesincapacityandinfrastructure,accessto resources,andenvironmentaltobaccosmokeexposure(FaganP,etal.Eliminatingtobaccorelatedhealth disparities:directionsforfutureresearch.AmericanJournalofPublicHealth2004;94:211217).Inparticular, smokingratesandrelatedmorbidityremainstrikinglyhighamongracialandethnicminorities,peoplefromlow socioeconomicbackgrounds,andotherunderservedcommunities(e.g.,thementallyill,homelessindividuals, LGBTQ).Whereasthereisawellestablishedevidencebasedescribingthesetobaccorelatedhealthdisparities, thereisacriticalneedforthedevelopmentanddisseminationofinterventionstoaffectthem.
