Life Without Phrasal Verbs

One day, I decided to see my friend at her house on my journey back home because she had been unwell I had managed to leave work earlier than usual. Before entering the train, I decided to visit the supermarket quickly for some flowers. As soon as I found a seat, an old man approached and asked if he could put his bottom on the seat next to mine. Unfortunately he spoke at length about his aching knees. Now, as you might imagine this is not the best subject of conversation so I pretended I was on the phone to my friend. Then, of course, my phone actually rang which made me look foolish in front of the other passengers. Naturally, being British, I changed carriages. When the train arrived at my friends station, I alighted the train. I called my friend but I couldnt make a connection with her phone so I entered a caf and watched the world go by hoping she would return my telephone call. An hour passed before she did. She was on holiday in Canada!
