Earlylife
HewasbornatTheHague,theeldestsonofHansGeorgeGugi(b.1700),ofZubenThurgau,aSwiss CaptainoftheGuardswholaterjoinedtheDutchservice,andhisDutchwife,ThrseReis.Gugypurchased acommissionintheDutcharmybeforejoininganewlyformedBritishregiment,theKing'sRoyalRifle Corpsasalieutenantin1756,servingunderGeneralJamesWolfeatQuebecin1759.
LifeinCanada
HeremainedinCanada,andhavingbeentrainedfortheEngineersandasanaccomplishedlinguist,hewas chosenbySirFrederickHaldimand,whobecamemilitarygovernorofTroisRivires,Quebecin1763,tobe hissecretary.HeresignedthispositionthefollowingyearandboughttheseigneuryofGrandprwithpartof theseigneuryofGrosboisOuest,wherehebuiltamanorhouse.BothseigneureswereinYamachiche, Quebec.In1771,hepurchasedDumontier,nexttoGrosboisOuestFrdrick,locatedbehindPointeduLac, andsomelandsformingpartofRivireduLoup.HewasappointedaJusticeofthePeacein1765. GugyremainedloyaltotheBritishcrownduringtheAmericanRevolution,butwasnonethelessharassedby varioussympathizersofthecause.OneofhistenantsonhisestateatRivireduLoupaccusedhimof threateningtowhipanyonewhosupportedtheAmericans,buthisnamewasclearedafteratrial.In1776, whentheAmericanswereretreating,theyburnedsomebuildingsonhisseigneuries. In1778,whenrefugeesstartedarrivingfromacrosstheborder,withthemarkedapprovalofthenow GovernorofCanada,hisoldfriendSirFrederickHaldimand,Gugyerecteddwellingsandaschoolonhis seigneuriesatYamachiche,Quebec,tohousethem.Gugy'sreasoningwas"totheendofhavinganeyeon them",andthisappealedtoHaldimandwhodidnotliketheideaoftherefugeesinterminglingwiththelocal populaceduringthoseuncertaintimes.

ConradGugywasdescribedasamanof"largeheartandhospitabletoafault".InthoseearlydaysinCanada, transportandtavernswererare,butGugyenthusiasticallyreceivedtravellers,withoutdistinction,intohis homeandhospitablyentertainedthem.Helovedhorses,andwasknowntohavemadeagiftofthemtomark thepleasurewhichhehadtakeninthesocietyofanoccasionalguest. Towardstheendofhislife,theownerofaneighbouringfiefclaimedthatGugyhadbeenresponsiblefor wilfuldamagetohispropertyduringtheconstructionofbuildingsfortheAmericanrefugees.In1787,Gugys seigneurieswereputupforauctiontopaythedamagesforwhichthejuryhadheldhimliable.Shortlyafter, however,thejudgementwasreversed,andhisseigneuriesweresaved,butitwastoolateforhim.InSketches ofCelebratedCanadians,itwasreportedthatfollowingtheverdict, Hegentlymadehiswaythroughthecrowd,and,goingtohislodgings,withoutspeakingoneword,entered hisroomandlockedthedoor.Onitsbeingburstnextmorning,hiscravatwasfoundedneatlyfoldeduponan armofthesofa,uponwhichhelayinarecliningposition,stonedead.Hehadnotcommittedsuicidebut, proudandsensative,hewasabsolutelykilledbythehumiliationofsuchaverdict. ThoughConradGugywasnotmarried,hisseigneurieswerelefttoElizabethWilkinson,wholivedwithhim athismanorhouse.Afterherdeath,byhiswill,theyweretopasstohisbrother,butashehadpredeceased her,theywerepassedontoConrad'snephew,LouisGugy. In1980,astreetRueConradGugywasnamedforhiminYamachiche,Quebec.
