December 12th 2013: WINTER BREAK ISSUE

Special points of interest:

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa (1994 to 1999). Nelson Mandela was born on 1918. Nelson Mandela was special to the black people because he fought for black peoples rights. The Europeans controlled the country and started putting laws that black people could not get mixed with white people but then it got worse and they couldnt vote or go to places. There was a lot of protests but they were usually savagely crushed by the National Party government. Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 and he was in jail for 27 years. On April 27th the newly free South Africans chose Nelson Mandela as their president in 1994. On 27th of April we celebrate freedom day. Our hero Nelson Mandela has been very special to black people for fighting for their rights but he died last week, December 5th 2013 at 9:00 at night.

cottish independence: Scotland, being part of the United Kingdom for 300 years has decided to vote on whether or not it should become its own country and leave the United Kingdom. In 1999 the Scottish parliament was formed so that they could make decisions for their own country instead of the rest of the United Kingdom choosing for them. If the Scottish do form their own country it will be highly unlikely their official currency will still be the pound although it seems the government is leaning towards keeping the pound. The people do no want to keep the pound instead adopt the euro. The British prime minister does not want Scotland to leave the United Kingdom. If Scotland leaves the UK they will have their own army and their nuclear weapons will be taken away and temporarily put under international custody. For this vote the voting age will be lowered so that 16 and 17 year olds will be able to vote. What do you think will happen? Reporter: Tommy

More Of MOvember
Mr. Sullivan: "My son likes it because he thinks it's cool but my wife hates it. Lilly: Will you keep your mustache, why or why not? Mr. Sullivan: "No I won't be keeping it because it is very uncomfortable." Selina: Does your family like your mustache? Mr. Harrison: "They don't like it much." He answered Lilly: "Will you keep your mustache? Why or why not? Mr. Harrison: "I will be keeping it because it hurts to shave around your lip." Every single penny can help many people get healthier!

Ovember was a recent event in ZIS. You may remember that we had a special assembly on a previous Friday when all the men showed off their mos in a fancy way. Lots of our men teachers and staff were participating. We gave out awards to the best ones. Did your teacher have the best moustache? We should appreciate all the male teachers who grew moustaches, because in the end it all goes to a worthy cause. So a round of applause for all the men! Thank you. The money you brought in was sent to the charity Movember bros because of men's health issues. We interviewed some of the male teachers: First, we interviewed Mr. Sullivan. Selina: Does your family like your mustache?

NaNoWriMo Sneak Peak

My name is Silvia. I'm a wizard. I'm awesome. Those are the most important things about me. Well technically there is more but I'm getting to that part. And now I'm at that part. So here I go. I'm not a typical wizard, well actually I guess I might be. Sure I read big fat spell books and have a wand that does little shiny sparkle thingies that give you mini shocks, but that's not the point. I live in a normal house not a big castle, I don't have some magical caldron to boil my potions in, I use a microwave, I can't just wave my wand and get whatever I want I actually have to study which is totally unfair! Anyway I think you get the point Sita Pawar G5

In Scotland (Glasgow) an EC135 T2 aircraft (Helicopter) crashed into a pub called the Clutha. There were three people on board the helicopter: the pilot and 2 police officers. It's thought that 100 people were in the pub at the time watching a band performance.

CRASH

9 people died in the crash and 11 people are still in hospital. Accidents like this usually don't happen and especially to helicopters. Helicopters fly safely all around the world-so everybody got shocked when it happened. The helicopter was loaded onto a lorry to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) base in Hampshire. The deputy chief inspector (David Miller) said the pilot did not make a mayday call before the crash. People are still inspecting the accident so nobody knows what really happened yet. STORMS

Oliver a loyal, kind and a good friend. We all know him or maybe not, it doesn't matter. Last Sunday he left for a new life in Miami, Florida, U.S.A. He used to be a student in grade 4, his class was MR. Butcher (4B). He is ready to face the challenges of learning in Miami in a whole different learning state. Oliver has to make new friends at his new school, well I'm sure that would be very hard for him to lose his friends, but he will make friends in a blink because he's that type of guy. Anyway this article is about how much we didn't want Oliver to go, but we know he's out there having fun even though we don't see him we know in our hearts that he's as happy as a monkey in a palace of bananas. Winter Concert

the fifth of December, we had a awesome grade 4 and 5 concert. The strings, the choir, and the band were very, very good. Everyone liked the pieces that they played, or sang. This couldn't have happened without the help of Mr. Spurling, Ms. Henry, and Ms. Johnson. It was highly creative and really gave th everyone a chance to shine. Also a big thanks to Clement who live streamed our whole concert for the first time giving many relations in the world a chance to share our children's efforts. Thank you Clement for being innovative and sharing your ideas with our school. We should also thank all the kids that preformed that night, all of them should be proud of themselves for doing a outstanding job! Reporter: Ishika and Editor: Sophie

Winter Recipes
Do you know how to make pancakes? If you read this you will know! Pancakes Ingredients: 1 cup (200g) all purpose flour 1 tablespoon sugar 1 large egg 2 tablespoon melted butter 1 cup (200g) milk

Snow Good!

now has arrived. Yes, the winter holidays are here! You'd better get ready with your decorations because holidays are nearly here! Some of you may celebrate Christmas, have you got your Christmas Tree up? The school is all snowy and you better start bringing your snow boots in. Next term there's gonna be more snow too. Comments and connections? Bbbbrrrr ....the winter is here and the SNOW is here too! Some people think snow is horrible but actually snow is really fun! In the summer you can't make a snowman, you can't ski/ snowboard, you can't go sledding, and you can't go cross country skiing.

Method: 1. Melt butter in the frying pan and allow to cool. 2. Whisk flour, and sugar to lose lumps. 3. Beat egg in different bowl and add milk. Mix well. 4. Add egg mixture to flour and combine. Batter should spread immediately when dripped unto a smooth surface, almost like crepe batter. If the batter does not spread, add more milk. 5. Heat stove with frying pan on it. Pour some batter into the frying pan. Flip when upper side is no longer runny and has small holes. Repeat with remaining batter. 6. If you want add maple syrup or sugar for more flavor!

Those are just a few things that you can do in the winter. Now, in the summer you can do a lot too, BUT snow is only here for about 3 or 4 months so it's kind of special! Snow is all over the place you can make huge things out of snow. Switzerland is a county that has a lot of snow during the winter. What big stuff can you make out of snow? Do you want to be the best snowperson builder in the ZIS Lower School? Then this is your chance. All you need to do is send a email to two people in the news team. emails:sorol@student.zis.ch & mbarmentlo@student.zis.ch . Your snowperson can be in the newspaper and will officially be the best of the lower school. Good luck! Reporters: Sofia Orol and Maartje Barmentlo

HOW MANY?
Have you ever thought how many animals there are in the world? Well there are 8.7 million animals that we know of. In this section each issue we will introduce an animal you may not have yet heard of. Axolotl: The axolotl is an amphibian and is also known as the Mexican walking fish. It is a salamander. It can come in white, black and blue. It eats worms, small fish and other salamanders so it is a carnivour. An awesome fact about them is that they can re-grow: their limbs, heart and brain. They can grow up to 30cm and in the wild they can live between 1015 years. Another fact about the axolotl is that it never becomes an adult. Reporter: Katie Maunder
