Professional recognition and support


If you are working for yourself or hope to in the future youll appreciate how important it is that your clients have condence in you and the services you offer.
Since 1993, AAT has regulated and provided additional support for members working for themselves through our members in practice scheme. Because AAT is one of the most widely recognised professional accountancy bodies in the UK, as a member in practice with us, youll be demonstrating your competence and abilities both to your clients and the wider accounting profession. If youre self-employed, the professional recognition and expert support AAT provides can prove invaluable. As a member in practice you will need to abide by AATs regulations and ethical guidance which will enhance your professional status.

Should I apply to become an AAT member in practice?


If you are an AAT full or fellow member offering accountancy, taxation or related consultancy services to the public in the UK or Channel Islands, the simple answer to this question is yes. You will need to apply to join the scheme if you are: a sole trader  a partner in a practice or a limited liability partnership a director or a shareholder in a limited company  working part-time on a self-employed basis while working for another employer. However, you may apply for exemption from AATs scheme for members in practice if:  you provide services only as a subcontractor to another accountant  you hold a practising certicate with another chartered and certied accounting body.

 I had been a teacher and a Major in the TA, but wanted to nd work that was compatible with my role as a carer for my disabled daughter. My aim in qualifying with AAT and becoming a member in practice is to earn a living in a way that ts in with this 24/7 responsibility.

As an AAT full or fellow member and MIP, youll continue to enjoy unlimited access to all our full membership benets in addition to free technical and ethical advice. Money Laundering Regulations 2007 AAT is recognised as a supervising authority for the Money Laundering Regulations 2007. As an AAT member in practice you will have the option to be monitored by AAT in order to comply with the Regulations. Further details can be found on the members in practice pages of our website at aat.org.uk/moneylaundering Voluntary work If you are undertaking work on a voluntary basis you do not need to join the scheme for members in practice. However, you will need to complete a Voluntary Work form which is available at aat.org.uk/mip
