Montage
Description: Combination of two or more images to create a montage. Programs: Adobe Photoshop Date: 10-26-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. (Two or more images) Use filters. (Apply at least one) Apply appropriate typography. Choosing good quality images. (Note background should be at least 16501275 pixels) Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice) Unifying a piece with a consistent theme Process: It took me a long time to figure out the images I wanted to use for this project. I went through a lot of ideas but finally came up with the concept of an opened book. I changed the hue to old style for the whole picture and cropped him out of the background of the original. I also blurred and smudged the text a little bit to give it a more authentic look. This project was really fun actually.

Imaging
Description: Use photoshop to edit a high resolution picture taken by me. Programs: Adobe Photoshop Date: 10-19-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. 6x6 resolution 150 Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image. Document needs to be 8.511 150 resolution. Margins: top 2, sides 1.25 and bottom 3 Process: There were 3 main steps in the process of creating this project. First I had to take the actual image. This was trickier than i thought it would be, there are a lot of aspects to account for when taking a good photograph. The next step was to desaturate part of the image in photoshop. I knew right away i wanted to desaturate everything except for the sticker since it was bright with high contrast and was the main focus of the image. The final step was to add a filter. I wanted something that would darken the background to add some depth and color to the overall photo. Im happy with the way it came out.

Logos
Description: Design three logos for a fictional company. Programs: Adobe Illustrator Date: 11-2-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image (at least 3 new logos). Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. Use only the tools of Illustrator. (No photos on logo page) Setting up a professional display for the company. Arrange three logos on an 8.5 x 11 vertical page / .5 margins and add the company name in simple type at the top of page. Process: I had never used Illustrator before this project and I was really nervous. But just like anything else it just took a little persistence and a lot of help. It took me awhile to come up with the vision of what company I wanted to present and what kind of logos I would start with. With my first logo I wanted something kind of simple because I was just getting used to it but I didnt want it to be boring. I hid little play and pause symbols in the letters to symbolize the company. I think my second logo is my favorite. Me and my friend Ben are from New hampshire where there are trees everywhere and its gorgeous so it holds some personal meaning. I just played around with the pencil tool, sketched a tree and threw in a shadow behind it. I think it came out really well. The third logo is the Gaslight our favorite restaurant. It has that shining urban feel to it. I love the symbol of a street light and how it brings light to the darkness.

Brochure
Description: Create a brochure a company of your choice. Programs: Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop Date: 12-7-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.) Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color. Process: This project was really tough for me. I was having a really had time wrapping my head around the layout and formatting. I couldnt visualize how it was going to fold and how everything was going to fit just by looking at the computer screen. After I figured that out over a few days the concept came pretty easy. I kept the theme of the company logo we created awhile ago and just made a brochure for that. The company I created is a simple but fun one and I wanted the brochure to emphasize that. It took me forever to crop the two images of me and my friend on the back the way i wanted them. Im proud of how they came out. I put a lot of work into this project and I learned a lot.

Business Card
Description: Create a standard business card. Programs: Adobe Ilustrator, and Adobe InDesign Date: 11-9-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. (Dont use photos or live trace in your new logo) Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use your new logo to design two stationery items with consistent design. (Photos are okay on stationery.) Letterhead: 8.5 x 11 (full-bleed optional, but trim only .125) Business card: 3.5 x 2 (print above center on a vertical page) Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Learning to keep thing simple by having watermarks and drop shadows light and white space. Programs: There wasnt a ton to my process creating this project. I knew I wanted a pretty simple logo but also one that had a cool, modern, urban feel to it. I decided to go with a city skyline at night. I just used the pen tool to create the buildings and the moon. I downloaded the header font from dafont.com. Its supposed to look like clouds and I think it came out cool. I just put all the information on the back so I could keep the creative integrity of the front. I like how my business cards came out.

Letterhead
Description: Create a letterhead for a fictional company. Programs: Adobe Illustrator Date: 11-9-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Process: I kept the theme of my skyline on my letterhead and just reversed the colors black and white. I decided to throw the website address inside the buildings just to add something a little different while giving information. I put a moon down at the bottom too so the consistency would be more obvious between both. Overall I think it came out pretty well.

Event Ad
Description: Create an ad for a benefit. Programs: Microsoft Word Date: 10-12-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word. Process: I first scanned my picture in and designed the rest of the ad based off of that. I wanted to balance my ad with excitement and information and think I did it well in the end. Youth Speaks is a youth poetry program that gives kids a voice. I tried to play with the copy write some to appeal to those type of people.

Flier
Description: Create a black and white event Programs: Adobe Indesign Date: 10-5-13 Course: COMM 130 Section 3 Instructor: Julia Peterson Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact. Process: The first thing I did was choose the photo. I wanted one that was strong and simple. I chose this one because like I said, hes standing strong and looks like a leader, someone we could look up to. Next step was to add the title which took me a long while to decide how to do. I highlighted the word graduate to draw attention because were all college students looking to graduate. I really like how it came out actually. The next thing i wanted to highlight was the DTP because I know when I see a flier the second thing I want to know is when and where it is. I highlighted the text with the grey text boxes to make them stand out a little more and spice it up just a tad. Everything else just pieced itself together and Im actually proud of this first piece of work. flier.

Identify hex colors for web design. (Find and use hex colors to match your logo) Process: This was a long learning process for me. I had zero experience working with html and css or anything like it really. I was like a baby that was learning to walk. At the same time Im grateful for this project and all the things I learned doing it. It was not as hard as I made it out to be. Making sure everything was perfect was a huge part of the process. If you dont enter all the codes in correctly or in the right place it will not come out like you want it.
