(Gurdwara Birth Place of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji) Nankana Sahib is a holy place where the founder of Sikh religion, the dispeller of darkness, the most enlightened global Guru, Guru Nanak Dev ji was born early in the morning to Mata Tripta i and Mehta !alu i on "#th $pril, "%&' ()aisakh sudi *, Samwat "#+&,)hai Gurdas in his .ar (.ar "/+0, has e1uated this event with the sun that lights up the earth after a dark night 2 Jeeu Kar suraj nikaleya, taare chhipe andher paloa. (Var 1/27) $ccording to 3uratan anam Sakhi, the trees starting dripping juice, many a pauper became rich, the diseased were blessed with health- The earth heaved a sigh of relief$ccording to anam Sakhis, when Daulta Dai, the maid nurse was offered money, she refused it on the plea that she had already been rewarded by the very glimpse of the holy baby- Guru Nanak gave his first message that he belong to God and would e4ert the people to worship 5is Name- )hai Nand lal ji has well said that Guru Nanak was asked by the $lmighty to turn the face of humanity towards 5imThe township of Nankana Sahib was earlier known as 6aipur and later on as 6ai7)hoi7 di7Talwandi but after the birth of Guru Nanak, it began to be known as Nankian Sahib/Nankana Sahib- 8t is situated at a distance %9 miles on the west from :ahoreGuru Nanak dev ji passed his whole childhood and young age in Nankana Sahib- $t the age of nine, when 3andit 5ardyal asked the boy Nanak to put on aneo, he refused to have the thread that discriminated amongst mankind- The aneo which was made of the silk for a brahmin, of cotton for a khatri, of wool for a .aish and which was strictly abondoned for Shudara- $nd again Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib Ji which is three folds for brahmin, two folds for !hatri and only one fold for .aish- 5e asked the 3andit if he had the thread made of compassion the cotton, contentment the yarn, continence the knot and purity the twist, he was ready to wear it- The 3andit was dumb7founded 2 Daeya kapah santokh soot jatu gandhi sat att. !ihu janeo jeea ka hai ta pande ghatt. "71) ;hen he joined a school at Nankana Sahib, the Guru is said to have written fundamentals of education on the wooden takhti provided to him- 5e enlightened the people when he wrote simply the first alphabet of 3ersian script <alaf< and conveyed the message of unity of GodhoodGuru Nanak Dev got married on +"st , may "%90 to )ibi Sulakhani, Daghter of Mulchand !hatri of )atala- 8t was at Nankana Sahib that he met )hai Mardana, who was his life long companion for %0 years, listening and singing Guru<s gospel- $ccording to the Sikh history, Guru Nanak at the age of ++ years, in "%'" $-D- went into silence for days together- 5e did not eat a single morsel and utter a single word-

(&. 127') Guru Nanak Dev i stayed at his birthplace uptil *# years of age and hereafter went to Sultanpur>or a long time, this place remained in normal form- 8n $-D- "&"* (Samwat "&0?,, Guru 5argobind visited the birth place of Guru Nanak and entrusted the responsibility of looking after this place to $lamst, an ardent disciple of )aba Sri @hand- Since then Adasis, (the followers of Guru Nanak<s Son, looked after this place for a long timeMaharaja 6anjit Singh got a magnificent building built there and at the behest of )aba Sahib Singh, the Maharaja gave 0?? acres land as religious endowment to his holy shrine but the Adasis continued to maintain the place- They had the charge of this place during the times full of stress and strife for the Sikhs )ut with the passage of time, in early +?th century, these Adasis Mahants began to treat this revenue free jagir as their personal property and indulged in erotic and lu4orious life- To get these historical Gurdwaras from the hands of these apostates the Gurdwara 3rabandh Sudhar Movement was started- Bne peaceful atha that entered Gurdwara anam $sthan was mercilessly hacked by the mercenaries of Mahant Narain Dass- Cven the holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib was made target of thier bullets- Many a people belonging to this jatha were tied to a and and burnt aliveThe Martyred half7burnt bodies were thrown into the wellThis incident gave such an impetus to the Gurdwara 6eform Movement that the Mahants had to handover the shrines to the Sikh Sangats- The magnificent building of this gurdwara alongwith the beautiful gardens, enthrals the onlookers and devotees- There is a big sarovar and a spacious inn which provides accomodation to the pilgrims- The historical and and the well are still e4isting, telling the tale of atrocities perpetuated by Mahant Narain Dass on simple7hearted and peace7loving Sikhs- $ccording to )hai !ahn Singh Nabha, the auther of Gurshabd 6atnakar Mahan !osh, this shrine had "9 thousand acres of land attached to it and a cash endowment of 6s- nine thousand eight hundred and ninety two also)y the partition of the 8ndian sub7continent, the Sikhs not only lost many lives, wealth etc- but also thier most loved and revered shrines which went to the other side of the border- $fter this partition, a mention of Nankana Sahib Gurdwara in the daily ardasa or prayer has become a reguler feature- These Sikh shrines in 3akistan are managed by a ;a1f )oard and every year, Sikh athas visit these shrines on four different occasions$t present there are +#7*? Sikh families residing in Nankana Sahib and as a result of this, daily service is performed and bani is recited- )hai 3artap Singh is functioning as the Granthi- $t the occassion of Guru Nanak<s anniversary, about three thousand Sikh devotees from 8ndia visit Nankana Sahib- Sikhs from all over the world come there too-
Gurdwara )al :ilah is situated %?? yards away from the holy shrine of anam $sthan- The holy pond Nanaksar with this Gurdwara was got built by 6ai )ular, the ruler of Talwandi$s is apparent from the name, this site is related with the wonderful adventure of the early childhood of the Guru- The Guru in his infancy, used to transport the enlightment of the Nama in the minds of his mates, while playing with them- The Gurdwara had formerly "+? acres of land and a little cash endowment also- )efore the Saka of "'+", the arrangement of this Gurdwara was in the hands of the Nirmala Singhs- )esides Tirath GURD ARA BA! !I!AH NANKANA SAHIB Singh, the Mahant there were also *0 other patidaars- The Gurdwara came under the panthic management at the time of the Gurdwara Sudhar Movement- This Gurdwara remained in the panthic hands up to "'%0, but after the partition, the 3akistan ;a1f )oard has been serving the Gurdwara- The sarovar adjacent to the Gurdwara is lying dried up and the Gurdwara is opened only at the time of visiting to it by the Sikhs- There is no arrangement of 3arkasha of Guru Granth Sahib- 8t is only the building which is safe and sound-
This Gurdwara is close to the gurdwara )al :ilah- $t this site, Guru Nanak Dev i used to learn Devnagri- :ater on, he was sent to 3andit )rij :al for learning Sanskrit- $t the age of "*, the Guru was sent to Maulvi !utab7Ad7Din of Talwandi to learn 3ersian)ut the wisdom and the spiritual enlightment of the Guru Nanak Dev urged all three of them to make obeiance before the Guru<s clear e4pressions of truth and wisdom- Guru Nanak while criticising the prevalent GURD ARA PA""I SAHIB #NANKANA SAHIB$ education system, enlightened them with the actual pupose of learning- 5e gave new meaning to each and every word- The Maulvis and the 3andits were 1uite ignorent about the mode of education- Guru Nanak was endowded with the wisdom from the very childhood- 5is composition in Sri Guru Granth Sahib known as 3atti was written especially to remove the suspicious and doubts in the minds of the 3andits- The very first stanDa of 3atti hymn says2 5e who created all e4istence is the sole lord of all- Those who serve 5im are his devoteesE >ruitful is their coming into the world2 (asei soi srisht jin saaji (a)hana sahi) ek )haeya ... sahib- This place is also called Gurdwara Maulvi 3atti Sahib as the Guru learnt persian from one Maulvi !utub7Ad7Din at this place- The Sikh residents of Nankana Sahib have been organising a regular citation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at this place for the last few years- The building of this Gurdwara is vast and maintained well-

$ wild tree stands at this place- 8t is so old that its long branches touch the ground- 8t is a bit high at the centre- $ccording to a Sikh legend, Guru Nanak rested for a while at this place, after returning from @huharakana, performing the true business- The Guru had fed the hungry Sadhus with a sum of 6s- +? /7 obtained from his father- Bn knowing this, Mehta kalu first felt annoyed with his son and afterwards brought him home- Bn admonishing the son, the father recieved a reply that he had spent his money in the true business- Bn hearing of this incident, 6ai )ular pleaded before Mehta !alu by saying =3atwari i F lest you chide the boy, let me make it clear to you that the whole city is blessed by his grace and presence=- This Shrine is situated at a distance of one kilometre from Gurdwara anam $sthan- 3ilgrims feel it their proud privilege to pay their homage-
This Gurdwara is situated in between Gurdwara Tambu Sahid and Gurdwara 5argobind Sahib- No historical evidence is forthcoming in connection with this Gurdwara- The Gurdwara is safe but no ceremony is held here-
Gandhari but he was helpless- $ccording to a legend, )hai Mardana was sent three times to ;ali Gandhari so that the former might 1uench his thirst- ;ali Gandhari refused and even used harsh words for him- Despite all of this, Mardana still very politely stuck to his demand- The ;ali ironically remarked 2 ;hy don<t you ask your Master whom you serveH Mardana reached the holy presence of Guru in a miserable state and 1outhed- =Bh lord F 8 prefer to death to thirst but will not approach the ;ali, the egoist-= The true :ord said smilingly,= Bh )hai Mardana F 6epeat the Name of God, the $lmightyE and drink the water to your heart<s content-= The Guru put aside a big piece of stone lying nearby, ;here a pure fountain of water sprang up and began to flow endlessly- )hai Mardana 1uenched his thirst and felt grateful to the @reater- Bn the other hand, the fountain of ;ali Gandhari got dried up like vanishing of comforts and conveniences of an unfortunate fellow- Bn witnessing the wondrous act, the ;ali in rage, threw a part of a mountain towards the Guru from the top of the hill- The true :ord halted the hurled stone with his hand- $n indelibe mark of Guru<s hand was inserted in the stone- Bbserving that miracle, the ego of ;ali vanished and he became the Guru<s fast devotee- Several attempts were made to deface the impression of the hand of the Guru but all of non avial and the mark remained for ever and ever- This holy and revered place is now known as 3anja Sahib- Sardar 5ari Singh Nalwa after con1uering the Sindh province during the Sikh rule, got erected a huge building of Gurdwara and a sarovar there- The control of the administration of the Gurdwara remained with the hereditery Mahant- $fter passing away of Mahant Mittha Singh about whom the people had grievances, a march was led by )hai !artar Singh habbar, to get control of Gurdwara- The atha reached 3anja Sahib on "9 november, "'+? and the S-G-3-@- gained possession- The local managing committee- erected a new building of the Gurdwara and e4tended the e4isted sarai for more accomodation- The )aisakhi fair held at 3anja Sahib was worth seeing- During the peaceful morcha of Guru7!a7)agh, one of the jathas of the sikhs was brutally beaten by the )ritish administrators and the capacity of the Sikhs for suffering and resisitance was put to trail- ;hile the authorities indulged in lathi charge, the peaceful Singhs were raising the slogan 2 Altimate victory belongs to the truth (Sat Sri $kal,- The wounded were carried on motor vehicles to $mritsar- They were hungry for the last two7three days and were despatched to $ttock jail by 6ail- The Sikh Sangats at 3anja Sahib received an intimation that the hungry Singhs were taken to $ttock by rail$rrangements were made for their food at 6ailway Station- The athedar re1uested the station master to stop the train but he refused to do so as it was not destined to halt the train- athedar !aram Singh argued with the station master and said that if there were any such instructions from his masters for not stopping the train, 8t was the ordered by his master, the $lmighty, that the train must stop- $fter concluding an $rdasa, the Singhs lied down on the railway lines- The atha was being led by )hai !aram Singh (Manager Gurdwara 3anja Sahib, and )hai 3artap Singh- Thus, the Singhs stopped the train on *"st Bctober, "'++ by laying down there lives- The train which was not destined to make halt there, made stoppage for one and a half hour and the food was duly servrd to the Singhs)hai !aram Singh and )hai 3artap Singh were martyred and si4 Sikhs received serious injuries- There stands no memorial for this incident- The administration of this Gurdwara is with 3akistan ;a1f board- $ particular atha visits this place on the eve of the )aisakhi festival- $ Singh resides in the campus of the Gurdwara from the board and maintains tha pious Maryada-
This historical place is situated just inside Delhi DarwaDa near old !otwali @howk in Sirianwala )aDaar (:ahore,- $ll the gates of the city lead to this historic place- 8n "#"? $-D- ("#&0 )-!-,, Guru Nanak, while redeeming the world from sins, reached the house of Duni @hand, an ardent follower of the Guru- The severed heads of goats were sold near )hai Duni @hand<s house- That is why this is known as Sirianwala )aDaar- The day Guru Nanak reached there, Duni @hand was performing Shradha of his father- The Guru while e4pounding on the futility of such ceremonies, said that giving alms in charity and feeding the hungry human beings was a good act but performance of Shrada was worthless- Duni @hand having freed of his superstition, turned his house in to a Dharamshala- The Guru blessed him with his holy presence- 8t is known as Dharamshala Satguru Nanak Dev ji>rom the very beginning, Mahants managed the administration of this holy shrine- 8n "'+? $-D-, the local committee took over the management and after "'+0, S-G-3-@- was made responsible for this shrine under Gurdwara act- The situation remained so till the partition of the country-
This memorial of Guru Nanak<s visit is situated near @hhoti 6avi or )uddha Daryia, close to )adami )agh 6ailway Station- 8t is said that at this place, the Guru emancipated Duni @hand<s father froom transmigration- To keep remembrance alive, a dome stands erected here- Mahants looked after this holy shrine and e4ercised control over property, attached to it-
This place is situated close to the birth place of Guru 6am Das in @huni Mandi, opposite Multani Muhalla- ;hen Guru $mar Das visited :ahore, he sanctified this place with his holy presence- The fifth Guru, Guru $rjan Dev i also stayed at )aoli, Dabbi )aDar when ever he was in :ahore- The sangat got a (baoli, built at this place- $ rostrum (thara, still stands as a remenant but the baoli has been desecrated after the partition-
This is that holy historical place where Guru 6am Das was born on +%th September, "#*% (+# $suj, Samwat "#'", to Sodhi 5ardas i and Mata Daya !aur- The Satguru spent first 0 years of his life here- This place is situated inside Delhi DarwaDa, near 3urani !otwali @howk in @huni Mandi- The ancestoral house of the Guru was small in siDeMaharani Nakain re1uested to Maharaja 6anjit Singh at the time of birth of !anwar !harak Singh, for permission to rebuild this historical place a new- $s a result of this, the Maharaja purchased the surrounding buildings from the GaDis and got a Gurdwara of dimensions "++<7&4'0<7& built which was some what similar to the 5arimandir Sahib, $mritsar- Bn the west is an open yard and Nishan Sahib is fi4ed on the South7;est cornerThe Singh Sabha Movement got set7going from this Gurdwara in "'+0 $-D- $ccording to Gurdwara act, this Gurdwara came under S-G-3-@- Management- $t the time of partition eighteen Sikhs faced martyrdom there-
This Gurdwara is situated near @huni Mandi chowk, close to the birth place of Guru 6am Das ji- The Guru<s ancestors belonged to :ahore- $t the time of the marriage of one the sons his elder brother, Sahari Mal, the Guru asked his son (Guru, $rjan Dev to attend the ceremoney, as he himself was unable to attend the same- Guru $rjan Dev was instructed to stay there till he was not called back- ;hen he was not summoned for a long time, (Guru, $rjan Dev wrote three letters to Guru7father e4pressing his desire for <Guru<s glance<- Two of the letters were held back by 3rithi @hand but the third reached the Guru, ;here in mention of the two previous letters was made- Guru 6am Das called his son $rjan Dev, back to $mritsar- This historical place was also rebuilt by Maharaja 6anjit Singh which is registered with :ahore @orporation under card No- N- +"%*- The devotees used to go on foot to anam $sthan Nankana Sahib from this holy shrine- This Gurdwara too came under the management of S-G-3-@- after "'+0-
@hhajju )hagat came along with a pathan to pay his respect to the Guru and put a bag full of +9+ mohars at the feet of the Guru, re1uesting him to utalise the same for religious works- The Guru asked as to where this money had come from- Bn this, the )hagat narrated the story thus2 =My pathan friend gave me this bag to keep in safe custody but my accountant (munim, forgot to register this money in his ledger (.ahi7!hata, and by the passage of time, 8 too, forgot all about it- ;hen the pathan came asking for his money, 8 refused to pay as my records mentioned nothing of the sort- The case was taken to the official (5akam, where the pathan lost his case- )ut while cleaning the shop before Diwali, 8 found the bag- 8 put e4tra 6s-"?? therein and try to return the same to my friend with apologies- )ut the pathan refused to take it as he had lost the case- Niether he considered that money his nor could take it as mine- That is why we have brought this amount to the Guru Darbar=- The Guru appreciated their truthfulness and started to build a baoli with that money at this place- $t the instigation of Diwan aspat 6ai, this holy shrine was demolished by Iahaya !han, the Nawab of :ahore and was turned into the residential 1uarter- Maharaja 6anjit Singh in "9*% $-D- rendered service to this place and got a new building erected and a sarovar dug- Shops were built on all sides as to bring revenue for the management of this shrine- 5e got a darwaDa built near the baoli as a memorial- )hai Nihal Singh was made responsibe for the Sewa of this place- 8n "'?* $-D- Sri Guru Singh Sabha, :ahore started weekly congregations here- ;hen Sant $ttar Singh .isited this shrine in "'"" $-D-, he started the daily recitation of $sa di var- 8n "'+0 $-D-, The Gurdwara came under S-G-3-@ management, but the congregations at the time of Gurpurs were held by Singh Sabha, :ahore- $t time of partition, )hai Dalip Singh was martyriDed on ""th $ugust, "'%0-
a single sigh of sorrow or grief- 5e considered it a Sweet will of his Master- ;hen in $-D"&"', the si4th Guru 5argobind visited :ahore, the Sikh Sangat dragged @handu through nose in the baDaars- ;hen he was brought in that state near that well, the grain roaster, who was ordered to pour hot sand on Guru $rjan<s body, shot him with the very lladlas and he died in an ignominious manner- $ Gurdwara was built there- $t the begining, the Gurdwara was very small but later, the sangat purchased the adjoining houses and built a befitting bulding- This shrine was under :ocal @ommittee Management but in "'+0, S-G-3-@- took its charge according to the Gurdwara $ct-
This place, that was hallowed by the holy touch of the feet of the Si4th Guru 5argobind Sahib, is situated inside )hatti DarwaDa in the @humalah Muhalla- The Guru accepted the re1uest of the :ahore Sangat and stayed for three days at the house of )hai iwan, a devotee- )hai iwan, out of sheer joy of having the Guru as a house7guest, converted the place into a Gurdwara, after the holy visit- ;hen )hai )idhi @hand went to :ahore twice to rescue the horses, that were sieDed by the rulers, he stayed there- The sangat rendered to this holy shrine- 8n $-D- "'"#, the hall of this Gurdwara was e4tended- $fter some time, Mahant 5ari Singh indulged in foul practices- The sangat took over the management of this place in $-D- "'+" and formed a local committee- 8n $-D- "'+0, the S-G-3-@- took over the charge of administration of this Gurdwara- 8n $-D- "'%0, at the time of the partition of the country, Many Singhs attained martyrdom to save the sanctity of this holy shrine&
Singh<s scalp was removed with a hoe, but he kept repeating ;aheguru- Bn "*th $su, "9?+ )!- ($-D- "0%#, )hai Taru left for his heavenly abode but as he had e4claimed, Jakaria !han died earlier- The devotees got a Gurdwara built at this place- During the Sikh 6aj, a big agir was granted to this Gurdwara- ;hen the management of this shrine was taken over by the S-G-3-@-, the rendering of service to this holy place went to )hai $sher Singh, who later became athedar of Sri $kal Takhat- Due to distinguished 1ualities of )hai Sahib, it earned great importance, but after partition, we had to abondon this holy shrineThe Gurdwara still e4ists but the management is with 3akistan ;a1f )oard-
committee took over the management which was transferred to S-G-3-@- from "'+0 to "'%0 $-D- $fter partition, this place was locked up and is still so-
