I would put our entertainment district up against any other ones in the country, Fayetteville Alderman Justin Tennant says. Our arts offerings continue to grow, and our annual events continue to grow and bring visitors to Fayetteville. That has a positive impact on our whole community, from businesses to residents, as well as grows our culture. Its a good thing for our city when the arts scene is thriving, and we do a pretty good job of keeping it going and also helping it to grow. Housing is very strong here, says Christine Cook, senior vice president and executive broker with Lindsey & Associates realtors. We are an eclectic community, with students, professionals, middle-class working people and housing to fit all their needs. HIstoRIc HoMes Homes that bring the citys past to life are in much demand, Cook says. Remodeled large Victorian homes and smaller bungalows in the Washington-Willow Historic District command as much as $250 per square foot, and unrenovated 19th- and early 20th-century homes there and in the Wilson Park Historic District and Mount

Around the square, old buildings have been turned into pricey condos that typically appeal to University of Arkansas alumni, professors and professionals, drawn to the downtown areas restaurants, shops and entertainment. NeWeR HoMes The south part of Fayetteville, once considered somewhat less desirable than other areas of the city, is being revitalized in response to the growing number of young couples and families entering the housing market. Brightly colored, contemporary townhomes are being built in the Block Avenue area, such as architect Albert

Fay Jones Buckley House and architect Marlon Blackwells L-Stack House were among seven striking contemporary homes spotlighted on the first Modern Homes Tour in Fayetteville in 2012. More than 300 people visited the homes during the one-day tour, meeting architects and owners. When we looked at Fayetteville as a possibility for a tour, we were surprised to find there was an incredible modern architecture

Consider, for instance, Arkansas Power Electronics International (APEI), Lavish Longboards and Acumen Brands. These relatively new startups may have nothing in common with each other in what they actually do, but they share similarities in how they each stand apart from traditional businesses. They can also point to their locations in Fayetteville and the Northern Arkansas region as one of the reasons for their success. FULLY CHARGeD That may be especially true for APEI Inc., which has a direct connection to the University of Arkansas. The company was founded in 1997 by a professor in the schools Department of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Kraig Olejniczak. One of his former students there, Alex Lostetter, is now the companys CEO. We value the university, says Sharmila Mounce, director of business operations for APEI. About 80 percent of our employees are university graduates. Weve been able to bring some of the alumni back (from careers in other parts of the country). This is a wonderful place to live, and having a technology company such as ours is very attractive to people from this area who want to come back home. APEI, which has 38 employees and an operating space of more than 30,000 square feet, develops, manufactures, and markets high-performance power electronics systems, motor drives and power packaging. The easiest way to describe (the technology) is, consider your laptop and the box between the wall outlet and your laptop, Mounce explains. Thats the power supply that takes the power coming out of the wall and converts it into something the laptop electronics are able to use. Thats similar to what we do, but we do more high-end applications and focus on military, aerospace and so forth. FRoM BoARDs to BRAnDs For an example of innovation on another scale, look no further than Nick Jones and the company he founded, Lavish Longboards. Longboards are known to give a smoother ride and enable more tricks than skateboards. Fayetteville is a great place to start a small business, says Jones, who came to Arkansas from California, where he and some friends had designed the first longboards. After launching our business here, we tested the online market. Thats when things got real. Jones longboards are made from 100 percent recycled wood from the Ozarks. The coolest thing about our design is that we can use almost any type of wood, Jones says. Sometimes one board will have up to 12 different types of wood.
Acumen Brands is another Fayetteville company that has taken an innovative approach in doing business. Using what it calls the art and science of insights-based product merchandising, the fastgrowing company owns and manages e-commerce sites for a variety of national companies and industries. Acumen was founded in Fayetteville by Dr. John James, a physician who gave up his medical profession to pursue entrepreneurship. The Benton native had paid for medical school by operating his first e-commerce business, a quiz bowl question business. Among Acumens brands are Country Outfitter, Tough Weld work apparel and Scrub Shopper medical wear. by John McBryde by staff photographer Michael Conti

Lead by Example
Under a new program sponsored and supported by the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, every elementary school student in the city will learn the habits of highly effective leaders. The program is based on the teachings in Stephen R. Coveys bestselling book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, which describes habits that help people become better leaders The goal is that by 2025, todays elementary students will become a top-flight qualified workforce ready to step into leadership roles throughout the community. The program is called Leader in Me, and my 5-year-old granddaughter in kindergarten is one of the inaugural students for this 2013-2014 school year, says Steve Clark, president and CEO of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce. The program blends leadership skills into all phases of learning, whether a student is studying arithmetic, reading or geography. The chamber believes leadership skills are learned at every phase of a persons life, and Leader in Me gets young people thinking about becoming good leaders as early as age 5. LeAD On The chamber is also involved in other leadership-based programs, including Teen Leadership that takes top high school juniors on an eight-month backstage pass to learn about health care, law enforcement, economic development, government, education and public service in Fayetteville. The chamber also backs an Adult Leadership program that features the same learning initiatives but lasts nine months. In addition, we host a one-day annual event called Fayetteville 101 where newcomers can get a quick course on what they need to know about this community, Clark says.
