Selkirk College Takes Action On
Doctor Shortage
Selkirk College announced that it is helping provide a
proactive solution to the rural doctor shortage in Can-
ada. Afer nearly two years of study and preparation, the
college has launched its Rural Pre-Medicine Advanced
Diploma and Associate Degree Program. Based out of its
Castlegar Campus, the program will ofer students want-
ing to pursue a career in medicine a three-year opportun-
ity to learn in the intimate setting of a rural college.
Research suggests there are many factors that contribute
to the ongoing and increasingly severe shortage of rural
doctors in Canada. Medical schools and various levels of
government have developed a wide range of programs and
strategies to address some of these contributing factors.

As you know, the VHKAS Thrift Store (Kaslo) closed
October 26
th
for necessary repairs to the side wall of the
building. Like all jobs, this job grew, leading to a facelift of
that area of the store. It would not have been completed
by the opening date of Dec. 11
th
, without the amazing help
from members of our community.
The Village of Kaslo paid for the repairs to the wall
itself, but many other people stepped forward to work
free of charge. We would like to thank Graham Gilbert,
who has been a tower of strength from start to nish and
Robert Stair, Stu Heard, Gorm McGeorge, and Steve
Jaksitz who worked on the construction with Graham.
Our packers, painters, unpackers, sorters, organizers and
cleaners were VHKAS members: Wanda Ammon, Janet
Marshall, Catherine McCormick, Ann Heard, Iwona
Smuga-Otto, Honora Cooper, Penny Yeo, Kristy Danby,

This adorable pup would really like a home of his own before
Christmas. He is very smart, condent, and loves to cuddle.
Ricky gets along with other dogs, and is used to chickens,
donkeys, and horses.
He is crate trained. Ricky will be a great obedience class
candidate as he is attentive and eager to learn. Ricky is
a Husky-Rotti mix, about 4 months old, and he has been
vaccinated, neutered and tattooed.

Huckleberry Bears
Winter is here but remember the amazing number of
huckleberries we enjoyed this summer? Well, apparently
many of the bears took advantage of that berry crop and
stayed up top to enjoy the huckleberries rather than fora-
ging for garbage and fruit down in our communities. As
a result, the summer of 2013 was a quiet season for con-
fict with bears. Tere were 103 calls about black bears and
four calls about grizzly bears to the Conservation Of cer
Service in 2013. Tis was a decrease from 249 calls about
black bears and ten concerning grizzly bears in 2012.
Te bears are starting to den up now but we may still
see other animals, such as cougars and coyotes near our
homes over winter. We will still need to manage our wild-
life attractants over winter. Garbage also attracts skunks,
raccoons and coyotes (not to mention rats!), and bird feed-
ers may attract many of the same animals. Deer love the
sunfower seeds we ofer in bird feeders and may browse
whatever remains in winter gardens. While you may not
begrudge the deer this winter food, remember that hungry
cougars may stalk those deer right into your yard. In some
circumstances it may be wise to discourage deer from be-
coming too comfortable near your home in order to keep
the cougar from your yard. Coyotes may be attracted to
pets, pet food or livestock. It is said that in coyote country
only indoor cats survive. Keep an eye on your dogs too.
Coyotes have been known to draw dogs into the bush only
to turn as a pack to make a meal of the dog.
WildSafeBC, like the bears, is now going into hiber-
nation. You can still learn more about identifying and
managing wildlife attractants near your home by visiting

Selkirk College contd from pg 12
Selkirk College believes much more can be done at both
the undergraduate and high school levels to encourage
and support talented rural and Aboriginal students who
wish to become physicians.
Tis is an opportunity to provide the proper start to
rural students who want to work in a rural setting, says
Neil Coburn, Selkirk College vice president of Education
And Students. If their pathway towards medical school
starts in a small centre, the data shows that when they
graduate from medical school at an urban university they
are more likely to return to a rural setting.
A rural upbringing, combined with positive under-
graduate and graduate rural exposure prior to and during
medical school, are two factors consistently cited in re-
cent research as the most important factors in determin-
ing whether a student will ultimately choose to practice in
a rural environment. Rural and Aboriginal students face
both real and perceived economic, social and education-
al barriers to becoming a physician. Tis program will
address these barriers and give students who are under-
represented in medical schools a strong, viable pathway
towards becoming a physician.
A unique touch to the program will be non-credit
course work that weaves well into Selkirk Colleges current
strengths. In conjunction with the Mir Centre for Peace,
students will receive mediation training, cultural sensi-
tivity training, mindfulness training and contemplative
practices to enrich and cultivate skills around attention
and emotional balance, altruism, empathy, critical think-
ing and decision making. Te college also hopes to ofer
directed service opportunities such as partnering with Sel-
kirks BSc Nursing Program in its successful Street Nursing
Initiative and the International Nursing Practice Experi-
ence in Guatemala. Selkirk College is perfectly positioned
to ofer a comprehensive pre-medicine program, says
Elizabeth Lund, Selkirk College Chemistry instructor and
the originator of the program. Tis is an exciting and
innovative program in Canada and has garnered inter-
est from all levels of health care. Although students can
complete all of their required prerequisites at other insti-
tutions, we are ofering an integrated program that, to our
knowledge, is not available elsewhere in Canada.
In creating this program, Selkirk College has worked
closely with the UBC Faculty of Medicine, the Rural Co-
ordination Centre of BC (a joint venture of the BC Medical
Association, the Ministry of Health and the UBC Faculty of
Medicine), Native Education College, the Interior Health
Authority, Columbia Basin Trust, local physicians, nurses,
nurse practitioners and other health care providers.
Students enrolled in the program will complete all of
the requirements including the writing of the MCAT
(Medical College Admission Test) and will be eligible to
apply for entrance to the undergraduate MD program at
UBCs Faculty of Medicine.
Entry in UBC Medicine is highly competitive and ex-
cellent students who meet all of the entrance criteria are
turned down each year, says Lund. Any students who
are not accepted into medical school afer third year or
choose to pursue diferent career paths can transfer into
fourth year at a university, such as UNBC [University of
Northern British Columbia], and complete a Bachelors
degree in an alternate pathway. Te start date of the pro-
gram is fall, 2014 with an initial cohort of 24 students ad-
mitted to the program.
For more information on the Rural Pre-Medicine Pro-
gram at Selkirk College please contact David Feldman,
school chair for University Arts & Sciences at 250-365-
1331 or via email at dfeldman@selkirk.ca. You can also
check out the Selkirk College website at: selkirk.ca/pro-
gram/rural-pre-medicine.

Endless Harvests 15th Annual
Holiday Donation Program
Every year Endless Harvest, the Kootenays organic food
home delivery service, collects monetary donations from
their customers, and matches what the customers donate.
Our customers love the program, because its easy to do
and their money goes directly to bringing fresh, organic
food to people in need in their communities, says Velvet
Kavanagh, owner of Endless Harvest.
We donate the food to where the customers money
comes from, so our food donations go to hamper pro-
grams and festive meals in Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Ross-
land, Slocan, and the Beaver Valley. Our customers really
appreciate this program, as it makes it easy for them to
contribute to the lives of others in their immediate com-
munity, explains Kavanagh.
Marya Skrypiczajko, Holiday Hamper coordinator from
the Nelson Food Cupboard highlights the benefts to their
program. Last year when we surveyed hamper recipients,
they let us know that produce is the most appreciated part of
the hampers and the food group they would like more of, so
we were thrilled to learn Endless Harvest is eager to enable us
to add more fruits and vegetables to the hampers this year.
Holiday Hampers for the Nelson Food Cupboard will
be packed and distributed next week and as always, well
have a big team of volunteers in on the day we will be giv-
ing out our hampers to meet the Endless Harvest delivery
truck and get busy packing the hampers high with organic
produce, says Marya.

Powerless In A Storm-Related Outage?
Stormy, winter weather increases the chance of local
power outages in BC. Last year, more than 1,700 outages
were caused by bad weather across the province.
BC Hydro encourages customers to prepare by:
Having an emergency kit ready that includes: fash-
lights, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, warm
clothing, blankets, a frst-aid kit, ready-to-eat non-perish-
able foods and bottled water.
Knowing what number to call if power goes out: cus-
tomers are asked to call BC Hydro at 1-888-POWERON
to report an outage or a fallen power line.
Knowing where to look for restoration times if power
does go out: BC Hydro has a mobile-friendly website that
includes storm-related information.
Learning how to keep your family safe: if you see a fall-
en power line, stay at least 10 metres away at all times.

Endless Harvest contd from pg 42
Endless Harvest has been running the donation pro-
gram every year since Kavanagh started the business ff-
teen years ago. She says, It seemed like the right thing
to do. We have the advantage of accessing produce at
wholesale prices, and pass those prices on to customers
who want to help others making their donations into
more food for individuals and families in need. Tey also
coordinate with farmers and suppliers who extend a dis-
count on their regular prices to support the program.
Its amazing to look back and see how well its done.
Now we even have people donating who arent regular
customers who like the ease of donating through us,
notes Kavanagh. Some customers prefer to donate one
of our produce boxes. We fnd a person or family with the
help of local agencies and give that box directly to them.
Te produce boxes make great gifs too.
Tis year Endless Harvest added a bonus to their Holi-
day Gif Certifcates too for every gif certifcate or gif
bag ordered a donation is made to the Holiday Donation
Program in the recipients name.
Tere is still time to donate and become an Endless Har-
vest customer before the holidays. Endless Harvest sends
out the bulk of their donations the week of December 16 -
20; however there are always late contributions that come
in, so more donations go out in early January.
For more information contact: Velvet Kavanagh, End-
less Harvest.

Toonies For Tots Campaign
Completion of the toddler playground at Kinsmen Park
in Castlegar is in sight, and a call is out to the public to
help make it happen. A Toonies for Tots donation jar cam-
paign is being launched this month at local businesses and
the library to help raise funds for the project. Te addition
of a fre engine to promote imaginative play will comple-
ment the rescue theme of the smaller play pieces installed
last spring. Safe, age-appropriate playground equipment
for toddlers and pre-schoolers is important to support
healthy, outdoor activity and encourage young families to
spend time at Kinsmen Park. Its a perfect location, with
its proximity to the waterpark and the library.
We want to have the playground ready for spring, so our
last fundraising push is on, says Arlee Venier, chair of the
Castlegar Early Childhood Advisory Council (CECAC).
With the support of local businesses, the campaign will help
bring in cash donations and raise awareness for individuals
who wish to make larger tax deductible contributions.
CECAC has successfully raised over 75% of the funds
needed to complete the project, with the support of the
City of Castlegar, Columbia Basin Trust, Kootenay Savings
Credit Union, Heritage Credit Union, West Kootenay Toy
Run Association, RDCK Area I, and individual donors.
Look for the donation jars at the library and local busi-
nesses. To make a tax deductible contribution, or to host a
donation jar at your business site, call coordinator Penny
Tees at 250-226-7605. cecac.info@gmail.com

BC Farmers Markets contd from pg 27
to allow sales of local craf beer, wine and spirits at farm-
ers markets. Also, the BCAFM met with Parliamentary
Secretary John Yap during the BC Liquor Policy Review.
Ofering regular market shoppers, as well as out of
town visitors, the option to taste-test and purchase local-
ly made wines, ciders and craf beer, while they shop for
local fruits and vegetables will ensure support for a vi-
brant farming sector in BC, said Jon Bell, president of the
BCAFM. Its also a great way for small, local businesses
which use BC grown farm products in alcoholic bever-
ages to reach new customers, while providing increased
selection and convenience.
Te government said that they should permit BC liquor
manufacturers to ofer products for sample and sale at
temporary of-site retail locations (e.g., farmers markets),
with appropriate conditions. Te decision about whether
to allow vintners, brewers and distillers to showcase their
products at a particular location will be lef to the loca-
tion management (e.g., farmers market association). Te
BCAFM will be working with the ministry as this initia-
tive develops. Te BCAFM is a not-for-proft association
that represents over 125 farmers markets across the prov-
ince and works to support, develop and promote farmers
markets in all regions of BC. For more information on the
BCAFM visit www.bcfarmersmarket.org.
