Everyday we use soap powder
and never stop to think how this
works to really clean our clothes
from all these difficult stains and
smells.
Well we did some research and
found out some interesting
information about the power of
soap powder that will inform and
empower you when choosing a
soap powder.
Affordability is always a factor,
and given the current economic
times in which we live, I am
sure that all washers which the
majority of persons will assume
are women, will be concerned
with.
If you permit me to digress a little
bit here, there are an increasing
number of men who take delight
in washing. I guess at this point
we would need to be specific
and state if we are talking
about washing with the juking
board, washing using a washing
machine or a combination of the
two.
Traditionally we have the picture
in our minds of mothers and
grandmothers bundling together
all the clothes and journeying
either to the river, well or some
assigned place where the women
used to gather and to wash.
The question is, what did they
use before the invention of some
of these modern soap powders
and detergents and how effective
were they?
If we journey back in time we
would read about ancient
Egyptian women who used to
frequent the river for washing
and bathing.
Perhaps you will find what the

Romans did to be
interesting, they
used urine, yes, if
this is true, what
a story. They had
what was called a
fullonica (a laundry)
dirty clothes
were taken to the
fullonica where it was the job of
the fuller, (who discovered urine
contained a natural cleaning
agent-ammonia) or launderer to
clean the clothes.
The urine was diluted with
water and the clothes were
soaked in the mixture. Part of
the cleaning process involved
someone standing in the wash
tub and stomping on the clothes,
similar to an agitator on modern
washing machines. After the
clothes were cleaned, they were
rinsed thoroughly to get the
urine stench out of them.
Well I can’t imagine anyone doing
something like that today, so we
rely on modern day scientific
methods to clean our clothes,
hence our dependence on the
power of soap powders to do a
thorough job.
So let’s get the meaning of
those two words. The free online
dictionary defines soap powder
as ‘a cleansing agent made from
the salts of vegetable or animal
fats’.
From the above definition it
seems that we may have to go
a little further to understand the
components within soap powder
to understand how it works to
cleanse. But before we do maybe
we can try and understand
fabrics and how they store dirt,
hence, the technique to remove
dirt from them.
Fabrics may be soiled by the
application of dirt, grease, liquids
to the fabric. Because of how
some fabrics are made, and also
the type of fabric, when dirt gets
into the pores of the fabric it may
cause a stain, which is usually
difficult to clean.
Another important point to
note is time, how long it takes
to clean the fabrics needs to be
considered. If we look at the
Roman practice that process
was lengthy and in our modern
day we may not have that much
time.
So, how does soap powder clean
clothes? By definition, soaps
consist of natural animal fats
and/or plant oils combined with
some form of lye, usually sodium
hydroxide (NaOH3, which is
a white, water-soluble, solid,
caustic compound sometimes
known as caustic soda)
Soaps are able to clean because
they contain natural surfactants
(surface acting compounds).
Surfactants are necessary
because they counter the effects
of normally occurring surface
tension in wash water.
Surfactant is short for surface
active agent, which describes
any chemical which changes the
surface of a liquid when added
to it.
Soap is a common surfactant in
that it reduces the surface tension
of water, allowing it to penetrate
dirt more readily.
Modern synthetic detergents act
in the same manner, allowing
the solution to wet the surface
quickly and loosen the dirt.
We should be mindful that soaps
used in hard water (water with
a high calcium and magnesium
content) create a scum known
as soap curd. Soap curd is an
insoluble, white, solid matter
formed when the dissolved
calcium and magnesium react
with the fats and oils making up
the soap.
Soap curd reduces the
effectiveness of any soap to
clean well and, at the same time,
creates a scum on sinks, tubs, etc.

If it’s difficult to get laundry
bright and mineral scale tends to
build up around faucets, drains,
bathtubs and shower enclosures,
your area probably has hard
water.
Hard water contains a high
amount of dissolved minerals
and metals such as iron,
manganese, copper and others.
Rust spots appearing on clothing
or porcelain are another telltale
sign of hard water.
To improve laundry results,
increase the amount of detergent
you use and add a powdered
water softener to the wash water
in each load.
So if all soap powders have
these base elements then what
differentiates one soap powder
from the next?
There are many soap powders
on the market today some are
more expensive than others and
the benefits are not the same for
all persons. Example some soap
powders are so strong that they
destroy the natural colours in
fabrics after a couple of washing.
While this benefit is great,
it increases expense for the
consumer because you pay
more for the soap powder and
then have to buy new clothes
regularly.
Another aspect is the danger
to hands. Some powders are so
strong that it has negative impact
on your hands. This social cost
needs to be weighed carefully,
because whether man or woman
people like to have soft hands
caress them.
Another aspect is the damage to
you washing machine over time.
Yes there are benefits, but each
benefit has a cost attached to it
and as a consumer you want to
maximise your decision.

Protecting the environment is the talk
around town these days, more so, in
light of the recent judgment given
by the High Court against the EMA
in granting a CEC to the government
to build an Aluminum Smelter Plant.
But should we go a step further and
consider how we can really protect the
environment against indiscriminate
waste disposal in general and from
auto body shops in particular.
Firstly let me allay fears that auto body
shops are not being targeted, on the
contrary, this is just to bring to the
attention of owners and workers in the
industry what people are doing worldwide
to help protect the environment by
properly disposing of their waste.
So beginning today and continuing
we will publish a series of tips on best
practices that auto body shops can
adopt as their own and introduce into
their daily operations. Now I know
the biggest issue is to get everyone to
adopt these best practices as their own
particularly where that industry is not
regulated by the relevant authorities.
The challenge is what will it cost to
implement these practices, because
adoption often involves buying either
materials or equipment that cost more
and unlike the established shops
can little afford that increase in cost.
And even the larger shops make not
adopt these practices because they
want to obtain maximum profit.
So, there is a challenge, what can be
done to encourage businesses both
large and small to always consider the
environmental impact and to ensure
that their operational processes do not
contribute to environmental destruction.
The other issue this highlights is the
narrow focus of some businesses in
seeking profit at any and all costs.
To treat with the first challenge would
require the development of in some
cases of new legislation, and or the
enforcement of existing regulations.
Be that as it may this is a task all
by itself and some may speculate
that if it is not on the government’s
agenda, then, you are not likely to see
any action in this area immediately.
So, this leaves us with one alternative, to
self regulate the industry. This involves
getting organised, forming an association
and bringing standards to the industry.
I would like to use a quotation from
EnviroStars a US based organisation
that was started in 1993 whose
formation was designed to give small
businesses incentives and recognition
for reducing hazardous materials and
waste, in order to protect public health,
municipal systems, and the environment.
They said. “Your best strategy is to reduce
or eliminate as many hazardous materials

then many if not most of these regulatory
requirements will no longer apply!”

Last issue we concluded that communicating
business goals should not be one way; employers
need to take time to listen. In this issue we want to
develop the point of communicating.
Marketing experts have long recognized the
importance of communication, to the extent that
they have dissected the communication process
with the hope that through better understanding
of the constituent parts they can be more effective
in communicating their brand messages.
In their research, analysis of the communication
process showed
• All communication begins with an objective, the
need to communicate a message
•All communication implies that there is a targeted
audience to whom the message is directed
•There must be an appropriate channel that will be
used to broadcast the message that the targeted
audience uses
•There must be some feedback method to evaluate
the effectiveness of the message communicated
•There must be some feedback method to evaluate
the effectiveness of the communication process
•Within this process whole process is what is called
noise; random and competing messages that may
interfere with the intended communication
Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business
School said, “In business,
communication is everything.” Yes, indeed, and
particularly if you are a small business, this is one
pillar that you need to ensure is built solidly into
the foundational structure of your business.
A business is like a field, what you sow you will
also reap, if you do not take time to build the
proper communication protocols into the fabric
and operational structure of your business, as
the business develops, so would the inaccurate
communications protocols. This is where your
time and energy would be spent of fixing issues
that could have been avoided, had the right
foundation been built.
Before we go on to develop the points raised
above, you should keep in mind that as humans
we are communicating all the time, whether in
informal or formal conversations, as we go about
our normal daily activities we are communicating
to our staff and peers, therefore the first principle
in communication is that as an individual we must
be an effective communicator. What tends to
happen when this principle is ignored, is we try to
build a communication system to fill the gaps in
our personal process and when the gaps becomes
apparent we engage in spin.
Analysing the
Communication
Process
Becoming an effective communicator is not
becoming a CIA Agent; your staff is not the enemy
within whose community you must infiltrate. This
is for real and the requirements comprise of the
things that your parents, grandparents and others
used to tell you; do unto others what you would
have others do unto you, or put another way – love
your neighbor as you love yourself.
Yes, indeed, upon this foundation you can build
a communication strategy, because your point of
origin begins with the end in mind – your staff or
customers. We have a business to run and staff and
customers need information about your products
and services in order to function effectively, so
managing information has to be strategic. But
before we go further here, we must develop
the points raised above in the analysis of the
communication process.
ALL COMMUNICATION BEGINS WITH AN OBJECTIVE,
THE NEED TO COMMUNICATE A MESSAGE
After you have set up business and all things
entertainment
are ready you need customers to come to your
establishment to engage in trade. But before we
get there, staff have to serve customers so that
the business would win and retain customers
to achieve its financial objective. This is where
strategic communication takes centre stage,
because all your training programs must be
consistent with the overall business strategy. But
apart from the training programs, the layout of the
customer service area must also be consistent with
the overall business strategy.
Yes, you ask if this is communication or what
does the layout of your business speak in terms
of communication. The layout of your business
must tell customers that your organization is a
professional organization and has thought about
pleasing the customer in every detail.
There are numerous examples of business places
that you frequented and asked yourself if the
owners were serious about customer service,
because nothing in the operational structure lends
itself to customer service. In one food place that I
visited, people had to line up at the serving area to
collect their lunches, this prevented other persons
from viewing what was on display, another factor
was the line for the cashier’s cage could only
accommodate two persons before it backed up in
the serving and seating areas.
