I%pa,t& .he WJP works with &overn ent and the justice syste authorities to identify and tackle issues and pro#le s$ 6t does so while aintainin& a critical independence$ 6t is havin& an influence on &overn ent policy, it is en&a&in& pu#lic opinion and also challen&in& journalists and lawyers to approach thin&s differently$ 6t has also had a ajor i pact on so e individuals who have #een released fro prison or had their conditions i proved$

After pu#lication of paraple&ic r"(oner A7s story #y +arolyn Raphaely in the ;uardian %F, the *aturday *tar and <usiness 8ay in (e#G9arch, the WJP was inundated with &enerous offers of assistance fro around the world$ 6nitially, Prisoner A was reluctant to disclose his identity for fear of victi isation fro prison officials$ "owever, after takin& seriously ill, he decided to disclose his identity in the #elief that he was dyin&$

in 2013 An e3a ple of the work carried out in providin& assistance to in ates and their fa ilies is the case 0a7ulan" Ra#e7e an# '"( ,o. a,,u(e# 4t'ul" Du7e, who after ore than five years awaitin& trial, were finally released on #ail in :ove #er 2013$ After CM postpone ents 5 includin& the retire ent of %pin&ton Re&ional +ourt 9a&istrate +hristo Jaco#s in the iddle of the proceedin&s ! the two en will now spend +hrist as with their fa ilies while awaitin& a new trial date in 201A$ With help fro the WJP ! who have followed the case since early 2012 ! 8u#e and Rade#e sou&ht advice fro lawyers at the +entre for Applied -e&al *tudies$ .hey relayed the advice to their own lawyer, who applied for a AM; hearin&$

Another case was that of Farou> 4e)er, who the WJP started assistin& in 2010$ 9eyer alle&es he was wron&fully convicted and in :ove #er 2013 ! with no le&al trainin& or le&al #ack&round ! represented hi self at the *upre e +ourt of Appeal$ 9eyer was sentenced to life in prison for urderin& three en durin& a &an& fi&ht in +lu# 12 Play at "illfo3 on the West Rand$ 9eyer willin&ly handed in hi self and his firear to police officers the ne3t day, clai in& he had fired out of self5defense$ .he police, however, did not #uy his version of events and conseIuently he has currently served 1A years #ehind #ars, includin& his pre5trial i prison ent$ .he *upre e +ourt of Appeal has, since 9eyer7s appearance, indicated that his life sentence could #e reduced #y an appeal court to a sentence of 20 to 30 years$
