FUNCTUNAL LANGUAGE

Dont leave it too late!

If you had an idea for a new invention, what would you do? Would you start work
immediately and try to sell your product? Philip Brown had a great invention, but he didnt make the
most of it and missed the opportunity of a lifetime.
Some years ago, Philip came up with an interesting idea. He loved music, and he wanted to be able
to listen to it everywhere he went. He examined his cassette recorder and realized that if he made it
small enough, he would be able to carry it with him. He made up his mind to try to produce one of
these small machines.
The technology was a challenge, but Philip was an electronics expert. Working in his garage,
he went to great lengths to make a prototype of his machine, which he called a mini-cassette. It
used small parts and it was powered by batteries. Because it wasnt much bigger than the size of a
cassette, it fitted in his jacket pocket. It was now equipped with small headphones so it could be used
in the street or in public transport without annoying other people.
Philip found his machine convenient and practical, but he didnt make any effort to sell it. A
couple of years later, the Walkman was produced by a Japanese company and was hugely successful
around the world. If Philip had sold his invention when he first developed it, he would have made a
fortune!
