Title:To Prepare Benzoic Acid By Alkaline Oxidation of

Benzaldehyde.
(C6H5COOH, Mol.Wt. 122) Chemicals required:
1.Benzaldehyde = 5ml. 2.Sodium carbonate= 5g. 3.Potassium permanganate= 10g. 4.Bone charcoal.

Apparatus Required:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. RB Flask 500ml with air condenser Heating mantle Buchner funnel Filter paper Funnel

Theory:

Aldehydes on oxidation give acids. Benzaldehyde on heating with alkaline Potassium permanganate solution gives Benzoic acid. This is an example of oxidation reaction.

Procedure:
Take 5ml of Benzaldehyde , 5g of Sodium carbonate, 10g of Potassium permanganate and 200ml of water in a 500ml R.B. flask fitted with an air condenser. Heat the mixture gently for about 1 Hrs. When all oily drops of Benzaldehyde disappear and MnO2 is precipitated. Cool the solution and filter. Acidify the filtrate with Conc, Sulphuric acid(H2SO4) .White precipitate of benzoic acid is obtained. Collect the solid at Buchner funnel and wash with cold water. Recrystallize the Benzoic acid from minimum quantity of boiling water using a little bone charcoal if necessary and also hot water filtration apparatus. Collect the pure crystals by suction filtration, wash with a little cold water and dry it between the folds of a filter paper by pressing. Record the yield(about 5g) and the melting point(121 C)

Observation:
Yield: M.P.:
