SECTION 16720 PUBLIC ADDRESS & BACK GROUND MUSIC SYSTEM (PA/BGM)

PART 1

GENERAL

To be read in conjunction with design drawings, specialist security & Fire consultants specification and all other contract documents including specifications Division 16 & General requirements provided by the main consultant. 1.01 A. RELATED DOCUMENTS Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Any other document forming part of the Tender Package, apply to this Section. Conform to General Requirements for Electrical Services of Division 16. SUMMARY A Public Address and Back Ground Music System (PA/BGM) will be provided as per this specification section, the system layout drawings and schematic.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A.

The contractor shall supply, install, test, commission, guarantee and maintain a completely new public address and music system consisting of control console, microprocessor based matrix switcher, pre amplifiers/mixer amplifiers, booster/power amplifiers, microphone desks, loudspeakers, tape decks, multi stacked CD player, MP3 player, PC hard disc, tuners, volume control units, microphone system speech recording and replay and all necessary interconnecting power, control, cabling, conduiting, cable trays etc. and conforming to BS 6259 in all aspects for the buildings. The system shall be fully integrated with the BMS, Fire Alarm and specialist AV systems.

C. D.

A Public Address System will be provided as per this specification section, the system layout drawings and schematic. Public address system cabinet and control shall be installed at the building control rooms, as shown on the layout drawings or as instructed other wise. Provide addressable speaker system arrangement so zoning of each individual speaker if necessary can be undertaken via software control, during the commissioning stage.

Vendor Qualifications The installation contractor shall have a minimum of 5 years experience in the installation and service of sound reinforcement systems. If so requested by the Consultant provide 3 references of projects of comparable size and scope that have been completed within the lst 2 years. The references shall include: project name, address, date

of substantial completion, and name and telephone number of manager of the system. 1.05 A. SUBMITTALS Drawings and Documentation a) b) The contractor shall provide the following information after successful commissioning of the Public Address and Music System. A schematic drawing showing all system components, the way they are interconnected with each other and specifying components type and model numbers. Specification sheets of all new components installed. System testing results reports Full Speaker zoning layout drawing The contractor shall prepare and submit as-built drawings for all instrumentation and civil work performed by him.

Manufacturers Technical Data During the time of the contract and before substantial completion of the electrical installation, submit to Consultant three(3) copies of descriptive literature, technical data, maintenance recommendations(from the equipment manufacturer), catalogues etc

Test Reports Provide test reports prepared in accordance with Consultant requirements. Provide other tests reports necessary to establish the adequacy, quality, safety, completed status, and suitable operation of each system.

Installation Instructions Submit the complete manufacturers installation instructions of all the products used.

Shop Drawings Detailed shop drawings shall be submitted including but not limited to the following: a) Furnish complete shop drawings of the proposed system. The submittal shall be bound in a comb or three ring type binder, with protective covers. The cover must identify the project, system, date and vendor name. This submittal shall consist of, but not be limited to: Material list showing quantity, manufacturer and description of each item being furnished. Functional block diagrams showing all equipment and connections. Equipment rack layouts. Speaker mounting detail drawings. Physical and schematic drawings of special and custom components or hardware. Any special installation requirements shall be listed. Include panel layouts. Catalog sheets with complete technical data for each item being furnished. Shop drawings shall be clearly legible. Poorly made reproductions of originals will not be accepted and will be returned without approval. Shop drawings not including all of the above listed items will be returned without approval. Supply 2 sets of As-Built Drawings, drawings shall contain revised shop drawing showing the final configuration of the system as installed. Test results as described later in this specification shall also be included. Furnish 3 sets of the complete calculations for the sound pressure level and the rapid speech transmission index (RASTI) including all input data.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 CONTROL / RACKS / CONSOLES All control equipment amplifiers, cassette decks and tuners shall be housed in a purpose built rack constructed to DIN 41494. The rack shall have a lockable front glass safety door and adequate ventilation louvres including ventilation fan. 2.2 MICROPHONES Paging microphones shall be of the moving coil type on adjustable goosenecks with uni-directional characteristics. The microphones shall have a frequency response range of 150 - 10 KHz and a sensitivity 83 dB + 3 dB. The nominal impedance shall be 200 ohms with a compensating coil and shall have noise cancelling cardioid polar response. The paging microphone shall be mounted on a table desk with illuminated push buttons for selective paging of different zones, as agreed at site, and an 'all-call' button. Zone selectors shall activate a tone generator and produce a chime tone prior to announcements. The microphone shall be muted during the period of the chime tone. 2.3 MONITOR PANEL To provide audible and visual monitoring of each output it shall be complete with selection, volume control and an LED display for visual output level indication. 2.4 LOUDSPEAKERS Loudspeakers shall be installed in the areas to achieve a uniform sound level and shall be surface, recessed or cabinet, types as appropriate subject to Consultant approval. Recessed speakers shall have an appropriate front grille and mounting plate with locking clamps. The loudspeakers shall have a power handling capacity of 5 watts with step down facilities to 2 and 1 watts. They shall be provided with 100 volt transformers to match 100 volt amplifier outputs. The frequency response shall be 140 Hz - 14 KHz with a dispersion angle of 140 deg. sound pressure level of 92 dB at a load of 1 watt at 1 meter distance and at 4KHz. The speakers grille shall be circular. The drive unit shall have a frequency response of 60 Hz - 18 KHz and a power rating of not less than 10 Watt.

A multi disk CD / MP3 Player shall be installed with upto six discs loaded into a magazine. The unit shall have the following characteristics:Frequency Response Signal to Noise Ratio Distortion Channel separation Quantization 2.10 LOCAL VOLUME CONTROLS Stepped volume control shall be installed with priority override relays. They shall be of the continuously rotating type with 6dB steps via transformer tappings to control loads from 2 - 100W. Separate volume controls shall be provided for each paging zone. 2.11 DIGITAL MATRIX SYSTEM The fully digital microprocessor based audio matrix system shall allow up to 12 inputs and 18 outputs minimum. It shall be PC controlled and programmable and shall consists of all the required hardware and software programme. System shall comply to EN60849 or equivalent. Several digital signal processing on each output: Volume adjustment, equalizing filters, parametric filters, anti feed back and automatic level control. Modules equipped with watchdog and indicator LED for activity and alarm status. Full path surveillance system from microphones to speakers. 20HZ - 20KHZ 1dB 90dB 0.008% THD at 1KHZ. 82dB at 1KHZ. 16-bit twin DAC, 4 time over sampling.

The modular system shall consists of all the required analogue and digital input modules, output modules, signal processing modules, surveillance system module, control module etc. Frequency response of the various modules shall be : 20-20,000 Hz THD < 0.05 %

PART 3 - EXECUTION The installation of the public address system shall fully comply with BS 6259:1997, section 6 and sub sections 5.16 and 5.17 a) The complete Public Address and Music System shall be installed and commissioned by the equipment manufacturers approved licensed supplier. All cabling shall be segregated from all power cabling. Public address and music system cabling shall be installed over a GI cable trunking installed above false ceiling. Conduits shall be provided to house the cable between the speaker and the cable trunking. All cable entries through external walls shall be made weatherproof. Demonstrate the operation of the system to the satisfaction of the Consultant. The contractor/specialist vendor shall submit method for installation, Testing & Commissioning of the system prior to starting the work.

TRAINING Two days (minimum 16 hours) training shall be conducted by a factory trained Consultant and technician on site. The training shall be on the maintenance and trouble shouting of the actual PA system installed on site.

3.2

TESTING AND COMMISSIONING Commissioning of the system shall fully comply wit the requirements of BS 6259:1997 section 7. The system shall be tested and commissioned in accordance to BS6259 and in accordance to testing and commissioning procedure approved by THE Consultant. Visual and performance test shall be carried out on the system and all test results shall be recorded on the attached forms issued herewith for guidance only. However, the final forms shall be arranged to contain any additional information required by the above standards or requested by THE Consultant.

VISUAL INSPECTION The following visual checks shall be made: a) The general standard of workmanship shall be checked, paying particular attention to the security of fixings and the neatness and quality of cable terminations. Microphones shall be checked as follows: i. That the type and impedance are as specified; ii. That the mounting and the positioning are as specified and provide the required coverage c) Recorded and broadcast programme sources for example, radio tuner, cassette player, compact disc player, should be checked for: i. Compatibility of interface signal levels ii. Correct installation d) Tone signal sources shall be checked for: i. Compatibility of interface signal levels ii. Correct installation e) Amplification equipment shall be checked for i. Adjustment of input controls ii. Adjustment of output control (if any)

iii. Adjustment of frequency response controls f) Loud speakers and associated equipment shall be checked as follows: i. That the type and impedance are as specified ii. That the polarity (phasing) of the connections at all points is correct iii. That the adjustment of controls and the means (such as transformer tappings) for adjusting the power input are as specified iv. That the provision, connection and adjustment of separate cross over networks or equipment are as specified. v. That the mounting and position are as specified and provide the required coverage. 3.4 PERFORMANCE TEST The installation should be configured in its most comprehensive mode, i.e. with all microphones capable of operation and all auxiliary sources (disc players, tape recorders, etc) connected. A functional test should be carried out to check that the system operates satisfactorily from all microphones and all auxiliary sources. Tests for intelligibility and general sound quality, together with freedom from reverberation and interference, should be carried out by person with normal hearing. The system voltages and wave form at the input and output of each component shall be checked.
