Hondo sat quietly in the midst of
a full council meeting. The Eve-
sham Police were in a line against
the wall honoring the retired K-9
who served and protected his
coworkers. Hondo has been with
the Evesham Police Department
for seven years. Police Chief
Christopher Chew told stories of
Hondos heroics through the
years. As Hondo departs, Spike
enters. Spike, who was named by
three Marlton students, will be in
training for the next few months.

The last parcel of industrial
zoned land, which was recently
rezoned residential, is set to be
sold to the highest bidder come
February.
Mayor Randy Brown arranged
for Township Solicitor John Gille-
spie to conduct the auction,
which starts at a minimum bid of
$2 million, on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m.
This is a gold mine for us, not
only for us to get a one-time rev-
enue, but also create something
for continuing revenue for years
and years to come, Brown said.
Its not all about money,
though. According to the council,
there has been only one industri-
al developer that approached the
township about the land in eight
years, and even though they were
approved to purchase it, they
backed out.
According to council, residents
surrounding the Sharp Road lot
expressed the desire for more res-
idential units. The council wants
that as well, but the owner of

It was a tough crowd at the Eve-
sham Board of Education meet-
ing Thursday, Dec. 19. A presenta-
tion was shown that hit a nerve
with the community and the
board. The district is looking for
ways to increase revenue, and the
proposal was for: the district to be
a part of the Interdistrict Public
School Choice Program, which
invites students from neighbor-
ing districts to pay tuition to at-
tend Evesham middle schools;
and the repurposing of Evans El-
ementary School.
The meeting spanned from 7
p.m. until 11:15 p.m. Two of those
hours were devoted to the 26-slide
presentation and the community
outcry.
Board member Kevin Stone
presented his findings for possi-
ble revenue through these re-
structuring projects.

School consolidation would
save $1.2M for next school year
According to the research, the
capacity for ETSD is 5,605 stu-
dents and it is currently at 4,594
students. The numbers indicated
that because of a low birth rate in
2009 and declined enrollment, it
would be possible to consolidate
the elementary schools and re-
purpose Evans Elementary as an
early childhood center with full-
day and half-day daycare pro-
grams and expand into an inte-
grated preschool program.
The change would reduce staff
by 24. The research indicated one
principal, seven teachers, two
special education teachers, one
nurse, one guidance counselor,
two secretary/clerk typists, two
teacher aides, two teachers assis-
tants, five lunch aides and one
custodian could be eliminated.
However, there are several re-
tirements, including one unan-
nounced principal retirement on
the horizon. This will balance it
out to be one guidance counselor,
two teachers aides and five lunch
aides.
There are three district vacan-
cies two teacher assistants and
one custodian.
The research indicated the con-
solidation would also cause the
classroom sizes to swell by 1.1 stu-
dents.
According to the presentation,
the savings for school consolida-
tion would be $1.2 million for the
2014-2015 school year.
These figures did not sway
Board President Sandy Student,
whose two children attended
Evans Elementary School.
I think Evans is the vitality of
the community. Its a phenomenal
learning community with in-
volved parents and principal,
Student said. To my thinking, if
youre not selling it, it doesnt
make sense. The administration
building makes sense. We dont
want it to impact our children.
There was almost a motion at this
meeting to take Evans off the
table.
According to the presentation,
the choice program could bring
in as much as $1.1 million for the
2019-2020 school year. Research
projects that average class sizes
would still be 17.1 for first grade.
The choice program is not
practical and financially sound,
according to Student.
One board member walked
through the halls of the school
and noticed there were only two
empty classrooms, and it would

Police department welcomes new K-9
Boyle Brothers Trucking and
Rental, John Boyle, is still trying
to convince the council to come to
some type of compromise.
Boyle had his attorney, Charles
D. Petrone, and planner, Barbara
Allen Woolley-Dillon, speak on
his behalf for options they feel
may better suit the parcel of land.
Woolley-Dillon suggested the
land be considered for a more
transitional zone, such as self-
storage warehouse property, or
for the ordinance to be altered to
support sufficient buffer zones to
safeguard Boyles business from
complaints from new residents.
Petrone believes the com-
plaints will be similar to that of
residents who live close to farms.
We anticipate those same
types of comments from resi-
dents, especially with this opera-
tion, Petrone said. Its been
there since 1976. Its a legal opera-
tion. It opens 24 hours a day, Mon-
day through Friday, as well as the
weekend.
Woolley-Dillon requested the
council consider putting informa-
tion in the ordinance that called
for up to 200 feet of buffer zones.
However, Brown expressed no in-
terest in changing the ordinance
and advised Boyles counsel to
seek zoning specifications during
the zoning board meetings, and
also suggested that Boyle has the
option to purchase the land at the
auction in February.
In other news:
In the work session, the coun-
cil discussed the building trade
language to bid specifications and
direct hire. The language does not
indicate that the township can
hire a sub-contractor with certain
certifications, safety training or
assurance of quality. According
to Brown, the lowest bidder is
sometimes not certified to work
the projects safely or properly,
and as a result, the projects are
poorly executed. He said the coun-
cil then has to approve someone
else to fix the mistakes. As a re-
sult, they sometimes end up pay-
ing the original top dollar.
The council wants to bring in
more local workers to bid on proj-
ects, and inject quality assurance
language to ensure quality sub-
contractors in hopes that dollars
are not stretched to cover original
projects and future repairs.
After seven years on the po-
lice force, K-9 Hondo has retired
and a new K-9 has arrived and has
been named by three Marlton stu-
dents. The German Shepard was
named Spike. Alex Hook and
Aidan King of Evans Elementary
School and Patrick Dugan of
Marlton Middle School all chose
the name Spike.
Spike will be in training for the
next few months before entering
the workforce.
Eagle Scout Collin Rodgers
was honored for orchestrating the
refurbishment of a trail and the
creation of a new trail in the
Black Run Preserve that stretches
for one mile.
Student government students
were honored from DeMasi Ele-
mentary School fifth grade, Marl-
ton Elementary School fifth
grade, Marlton Middle and De-
Masi Middle eighth grade and the
DeMasi Middle Principals Cabi-
net.

to expense those students the first
year, but there will be no revenue.
The state has scaled back the
choice program. Four years ago,
it was proposed to the board and
was turned down.
Student did not hold back his
opinion on the issue of the choice
program.
Whats the Einstein quote?
The definition of insanity is tak-
ing the same data and expecting
different results, Student said I
dont think its getting done.
There are other ways to bring rev-
enue. I think there will be a mo-
tion to take it off the table in Jan-
uary.
In other news:
There is a policy that requires
attendants of Board of Education
meetings to give 48 hours notice
to the board for videotaping the
meeting. However, this policy is
never enforced and the board
voted to do away with it altogeth-
er.
The board is looking into the
risk management method of self-
insurance. This would allow the
district to set aside money for po-
tential future incidents.
The next board meeting will
be held at Beeler Elementary
School on Jan. 2. For more meet-
ing information, visit www.eve-

H
ow many times have you seen
it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free hundred dollar bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other mo-
torists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its get-
ting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jer-
sey drivers arent the worst in the na-
tion, at least according to an annual
study recently released by CarInsur-
anceComparison.com. In fact, were
only the 32nd worst state-full of driv-
ers. If were only middle of the pack,
wed hate to be on the road in
Louisiana, whose drivers were collec-
tively ranked as the worst in the na-
tion.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its
worth repeating: Slow down out there!
Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive errati-
cally...every time you drive! Its just not
possible that your wife is giving birth
for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the
wheel. And our ready, willing and able
are out on the roads, trying to get to or
from a New Years celebration.
Lets make sure everyone gets where
theyre going safely. Lets all share the
road with each other, and lets stop
being such maniacs even if were not
the worst.
Slow down out there
Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year
Your thoughts
How bad is the driving out there? How can
we get better? Should more regulations
be put on New Jersey drivers to improve
safety? Let your thoughts be heard
through a letter to the editor.
Cherokee High School highlights
accomplishments at BOE meeting
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
For a group of young men from Chero-
kee High School, 2013 will be a year that
will live on forever.
As part of the high schools presentation
of its accomplishments in 2013 at the
Lenape Regional High School Districts
Board of Education meeting last week, the
football team was honored for winning the
South Jersey Group V championship on
Dec. 6 over Eastern High School.
All of the seniors from that champi-
onship team were in attendance. Each re-
ceived a certificate from the board.
These kids are great kids, Head Coach
P.J. Mehigan said. You would be proud of
these kids both on the field and in the class-
room.
Mehigan said the team was successful
not just because they loved football, but
also because they all cared about one an-
other.
The football team was just one highlight
for Cherokee at the meeting. The high
school gave its annual presentation that re-
capped the 2012-13 school year.
Highlighted in the presentation was a
combination of academic and community
service accomplishments. The high
schools senior class from 2013 received a
combined $140,000 in college scholarships
and had six National Merit Scholarship
students.
Outside the classroom, the class of 2013
had 545 students participate in the Senior
Day of Service. The program is a way for
the senior class to volunteer time in their
school and local community.
In other news:
The Lenape District completed its
Chris Herren assemblies two weeks ago,
with Shawnee and Seneca High School
hosting him in the first week of December.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm spoke
about the incredibly positive reaction that
students from the district had to Herren's
assemblies.
The board prepared a packet with reac-
tion and photos from students who were
moved by Herren's speech. She said many
students took to Twitter following the as-
semblies with their reaction.
There's a photo of a wall in one of the
schools with purple squares, Birnbohm
said. Those are all students who pledged
their allegiance to Project Purple (Herrens
initiative against substance abuse).
Birnbohm said another student took a
message outside of the drug and alcohol
theme and said that Herren also spoke
about not judging others and treating
everyone fairly, tying in with the district's
Defy the Issue message.

ed at Cherokee High School during the win-

DeGRAFFENREID
obituary
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
The state Department of Edu-
cation approved the Lenape Re-
gional High School District's
Teaching Practice Evaluation In-
strument "as part of the state's
plan to implement annual profes-
sional performance reviews of
classroom teachers," according to
a recent release.
Schools were required to begin
implementation of AchieveNJ by
the 2013-14 school year.
According to the DOE, previ-
ous evaluations were often sub-
jective and infrequent, and better
teaching and learning did not re-
sult. The state had been working
on the new evaluation system
since 2011. It was launched
statewide in the fall.
According to the release,
LRHSD Superintendent of
Schools Carol L. Birnbohm and a
team of educators representing
all of the district's schools com-
pleted the DOE's rigorous Re-
quest for Qualification for the
evaluation instrument applica-
tion.
In addition to teacher evalua-
tions, tenure procedures have
been changed.
According to the DOE, educa-
tors are eligible to earn tenure
after four years, one year longer
than it took under the previous
law. In addition, for teachers,
principals, assistant principals
and vice principals, TEACHNJ
links the earning and keeping of
tenure to the results of the em-
ployees annual combined evalua-
tion.
We were gratified to be noti-
fied that Lenape's evaluation tool
was placed on the state's list of
Approved Teaching Practice
Evaluation Instruments, which
reinforces our commitment to
our 'home grown' model," Birn-
bohm said in the release.
Additional schools in the area
have made the change, including
Cherry Hill and Moorestown.
The change will be positive fi-
nancially for the district. LRHSD
will stand to see $70,000 in cost
savings per year by implementing
its own evaluation instead of con-
tracting with a third party, offi-
cials said.
LRHSD has been implement-
ing the Research for Better Teach-
ing Inc. model for the past 16
years as the professional develop-
ment model.
RBT has been used to aid and
develop educators, promote colle-
giality, develop leadership skills
for strong school and district cul-
ture and build in-house profes-
sional development in all LRHSD
schools to ensure skillful teach-
ing, according to the release.
The release also states that
when the DOE in 2012 announced
its plans to require school dis-
tricts to implement state-mandat-
ed evaluation instruments, the
district organized the District
Evaluation Advisory Committee
to analyze its RBT-based teacher
evaluation instrument to ensure
alignment with the requirements.
Birnbohm credits the mem-
bers of the DEAC, who worked to-
gether for nearly a year, for spear-
heading the district's successful
RFQ application, the release said.
"This truly was a district-wide
effort that engaged administra-
tors and teaching staff represent-
ing the Education Association. It
was representative of the team-
work that defines the Lenape Dis-
trict and reinforces our focus on
professional excellence and the
success and well-being of every
student," Birnbohm said in the
release.
LRHSD Director of Curricu-
lum and Instruction Heather Xe-
nakis, who chaired the DEAC and
coordinated the RFQ application
process, is unequivocally dedicat-
ed to the district's continued suc-
cess using the RBT pedagogical
model, which reinforces a com-
mon language between teachers
and administrators, which is crit-
ical to improve instruction, offi-
cials said.
Having high expectations for
professional growth is the back-
bone for success in the class-
room, Birnbohm said.
"We realize many benefits
using our own model," Xenakis
said. "Teachers have a comfort
level with RBT terminology and
ideology because it has been part
of our professional development
for 16 years. District teachers
serve as RBT in-district trainers
and lead all professional develop-
ment coursework. And last, but
not least, the district realizes
huge savings each year.

CHEROKEE HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Heading into last season, the
Cherokee High School wrestling
program was full of question
marks. Then head coach Bill Roller
had stepped down after seven years
and 106 career victories. Ten
starters from the previous seasons
Olympic Conference American Di-
vision championship squad had
graduated.
Enter first-time head coach
Michael Booth, and while maybe
not all the questions were an-
swered, the important one was:
Would the team perform?
The Chiefs finished 21-7 and
qualified for the NJSIAA South
Jersey Group IV playoffs. Now with
12 starters returning from last
years surprising squad, including
senior standout Alex Baider,
Cherokee will not be sneaking up
on anyone this season.
Last season, we were young and
inexperienced, but I definitely had
some tough kids, Booth said.
Inexperienced is being generous.
The Chiefs were made up of nine
sophomores, one junior and three
Warming
up for
winter
please see BOOTH, page 17
seniors. Only three wrestlers on
the team had varsity experience.
But Booth is a wrestling lifer who
focuses on getting the most out of
his students.
He began wrestling when he
was just a kindergartner, eventu-
ally competing at Camden
Catholic High School where he
won a state title as a senior in
2000. Booth continued his
wrestling career at the University
of North Carolina and moved
back to the area after earning his
degree.
After working with the
wrestling program at Eastern
High School for four years, Booth
came to the Lenape district in
2009. He spent two years teaching
math at Shawnee while also serv-
ing as an assistant wrestling
coach for the Renegades under
Tom Mann.
When I went to Shawnee, I
came in hoping one of the four
head coaching spots in the dis-
trict would open up, Booth said.
I didnt expect it to be Cherokee,
but I was surprised when it did. I
had wanted to be a head coach for
a long time. I was really excited
about the opportunity.
While relying on the teams
youth to step up and perform last
season, Booth is in the much
more enviable position this sea-
son of knowing what to expect
from his unit. Those expectations
are especially true for Baider. He
finished the 2012-2013 season with
a 30-10 record and won Region 7
as a 120-pounder. Baider went on
to win his first match in the state
tournament and wrestled back to
finish sixth in the state.
Alex is a phenomenal talent
and no one has bigger expecta-
tions for him this season than
himself, Booth said. As a senior,
he knows this is his last year to
really enjoy and perform on the
high school level. I think hes ex-
cited for the challenge, and Im ex-
cited to see what he can do.
And though the season is
young, Booth has been happy
with what his team has shown
him in the early going.
Ive got a lot of kids that are
truly committed. That goes a long
way in this sport, Booth said.
What youre looking for is kids
that are going to work hard to get
better every day.
