Introduction Introduction
The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport strives to elevate the conscience of sport in Canada. The Centre is responsible for the implementation and management of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP). The CADP is compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code this international harmonization results in better anti-doping programs for all athletes. The Centre is one of Canadas early leaders in the True Sport Movement, Canadas social movement for sport and community. True Sport extends from the playground to the podium, ranging from simple pickup games to community and school-based sport leagues to elite high-performance competition. At the heart of True Sport is a simple idea: good sport can make a great difference! With the knowledge that true sport can make a great difference for individuals, communities and our country, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport will work collaboratively to: activate a values-based and principle-driven sport system, advocate for sport that is fair, safe and open, and protect the integrity of sport. Our vision is that sport in Canada is fair, safe and open to everyone. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport is an ISO-certified organization.

Introduction

About The Substance Classification Booklet

This booklet provides a quick reference of the status in sport of Canadian brand-name medications and ingredients only. Information regarding supplements or natural health care products will not be found in this resource (see more under Supplements). The list is not exhaustive but strives to include the most common and relevant medications on the market. The status is based on the 2012 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List, the International Standard that defines the substances and methods that are prohibited in-competition, out-ofcompetition, and in particular sports. The Prohibited List is updated annually by WADA. The current edition of the Prohibited List is available on WADAs website at www.wada-ama.org. Athletes should always check with their international federation to find out if additional substances and methods are prohibited in their sport. Using this Resource The information in this publication is provided for reference purposes only. This booklet should be used in conjunction with the Global DRO, an online drug reference database (see more under The Global DRO). This booklet presents a non-exhaustive list of Canadian medications. It should not be used for verifying brand-name medications procured overseas. Always check the exact name of the medication or substance to ensure the name on the label of the medication matches the name in this booklet. Brand names are in bold, while ingredient names are written in normal text. For each brand name, the ingredients are listed (in parentheses). Generic medications are often named by the abbreviation of the company followed by the chemical name of the substance. For example: Apo-, CO-, Gen-, Mylan-, Novo-, Nu-, PMS-, Ran-, Rho-, Riva-, Sandoz- and Taro-. For instance, Apo-Salbutamol is salbutamol. Organization of this Resource Substances by Status This section provides a list of medications in alphabetical order with their corresponding status in sport, specified separately for in-competition and out-of competition. The possible statuses are: Prohibited; Not Prohibited; or See Global DRO (for substances associated with specific conditions which require further verification in the Global DRO).

Medications for Common Conditions This section provides lists of medications divided into categories of therapeutic use (e.g. cough and cold, anti-inflammatories, antihistamines) and sorted by their WADA status. The lists should not be taken as a recommendation concerning the relative efficacy of various substances or as a recommendation to use them. Athletes must rely on the advice of doctors or pharmacists about the safety or efficacy of a medication. The decision to use or not use a substance or method is ultimately the responsibility of the individual.

Introduction

Medical Conditions
Athletes, like all others, may have illnesses or conditions that require them to take particular medications. If the medication an athlete is required to take to treat an illness or condition happens to fall under the World Anti-Doping Agencys Prohibited List, a medical exemption may give that athlete the authorization to take the needed medicine. Athletes should speak with their doctor about their anti-doping requirements in order to make informed decisions about their health care. Athletes must also take care to follow the necessary steps towards obtaining a medical exemption if they must use a medication or product that is prohibited in sport. Athletes are not automatically granted authorization and must ensure they follow the appropriate process. Strict liability applies to athletes whenever a prohibited substance is found in their doping control sample. Ignorance is never an excuse. A Canadian athletes medical exemption requirements and application process are dependent on a few things, such as competition level and sport. To determine your particular medical exemption requirements and application process, and to obtain all necessary forms, you can: Go online and use the CCESs Medical Exemption Wizard www.cces.ca/MEwizard. Use the Medical Exemption Decision-Making Tool in this booklet.

Introduction Substance Classification Booklet Medical Exemption Decision-Making Tool

Introduction Supplements
The CCES would like to draw athletes attention to the extreme risk of using supplements. While it is easy to assume that an inadvertent anti-doping rule violation can only happen to someone else, in reality anyone that uses supplements is at risk. The CCES believes the use of most supplements pose an unacceptable risk for athletes and their athletic careers. While the CCES does not recommend the use of supplements, we do acknowledge that many athletes choose to use them to support the demands of training and travelling. Ultimately, athletes are responsible for any prohibited substance that may be found in their sample; this is known as strict liability. If athletes who use supplements test positive for a prohibited substance, this can result in a violation being declared, regardless of how the prohibited substance got into their body. Serious sanctions may be imposed. Risks Associated with Supplement Use Supplements may intentionally contain prohibited substances or may be inadvertently contaminated with prohibited substances. The key issue is that there is little government regulation on the supplement industry. Some supplement manufacturers mislabel their products by not accurately specifying the contents or the relative amounts of each ingredient per dose. It is not uncommon for supplements to be cross-contaminated with banned substances during the manufacturing process if the manufacturer produces other products that contain prohibited substances. Many ingredients are sourced outside of Canada and may be contaminated. The reality is that there continue to be significant risks associated with supplement use. Minimizing the Risks of Using Supplements Athletes have a personal responsibility to evaluate all the risks associated with supplements before using them. The NSF Certified for Sport program can help athletes identify products that have been tested for purity and banned substances, and help minimize the risk of inadvertent doping (www.nsfsport.com). If you choose to use supplements you should take these precautions to minimize your risk. These precautions may help demonstrate that you were not at fault or not significantly at fault if a violation occurs as a result of supplement use. Although in most circumstances a violation will still be declared, proof that the utmost caution was observed may be taken into consideration when the sanction is imposed. 1. Make a direct enquiry to the manufacturer and get a written guarantee that the product is free of any substances on the WADA Prohibited List. 2. Ask if the manufacturer makes any products that do contain prohibited substances at the plant where the supplement is produced. If prohibited substances are present in a manufacturing plant, the risk of cross-contamination with the supplement is very high dont use that product. 3. Ask if the manufacturer is prepared to stand behind its product. If they are not dont use that product. 4. Have proof showing the sensible and obvious precautions you took before taking the supplement to address the various risk factors associated with its use. Advice from the CCES or other health professionals regarding supplements may reduce but cannot eliminate the risk of inadvertent doping. The risks associated with supplementation are clear the responsibility for assuming these risks ultimately rests with you.

The Prohibited List The Prohibited List

The Prohibited List is an international standard identifying substances and methods prohibited in sport. It was first published in 1968 by the International Olympic Committee. Since 2004, the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA) has been responsible for the preparation and publication of the List, which is updated every year effective January 1. Banned substances and methods are placed into categories based on their effect or application (e.g., steroids (anabolic agents), stimulants, gene doping) and can be prohibited in-competition, out-ofcompetition, or in particular sports. Athletes should be aware of the classes of substances that are on the Prohibited List, and should be careful to check the status of any medication before taking it, to ensure that it wont result in a positive test.
