NICK COHEN/The Sun
The Essential Brass Quartet played a few holiday favorites as part of Haddonfields Candlelight Shopping on Dec. 13. In addition to
those shopping, the First Baptist Church of Haddonfields live nativity brought residents as well as folks from neighboring townships
for a night of holiday cheer.

The Haddonfield Tricentennial
Committee and Haddonfield
Civic Association are asking all
Haddonfield residents to submit a
photograph of their families in
front of their homes this holiday
season, with the family in the
foreground and the home in the
background, to memorialize life
in Haddonfield in 2013. One hun-
dred of the 4,600 Haddonfield
households have submitted pho-
tos so far, and the deadline has
been extended to Jan. 15, to ac-
commodate families who will not
be together until late December.
We want to capture the people
and places that made Haddonfield
what it is in 2013, and preserve
this snapshot of time for future
generations, said Maureen
Eyles, executive director of Had-
donfields Tricentennial. Along
with the photo, we want to record
the family names and address of
the home.
To view the instructions for
submitting digital or printed pho-
tographs, please visit www.had-
donfield300.org/photo.
Digital and printed photo-
graphs will be collected for publi-
cation in a town-wide photo
album, which will be donated to
the Historical Society of Haddon-
fields archives for future genera-
tions to view and enjoy.
I have enjoyed seeing the re-
cent submissions of families in
the snow. In 100 years, I think peo-
ple will enjoy seeing the people
who lived in their homes, how
they decorated during the holi-
days, and even what they wore.
This is a great memorial, Eyles
said.

Dangers of wood smoke
focus of meeting
Youre thinking of curling up
with that new book by the cozy
wood fire. Wait! Did you know
this could be bad for your health
and the environment?
At the Evening Membership
Departments Jan. 14 meeting,
Walter Delengowski will speak on
the dangers of residential wood
smoke. Wood smoke emits fine
particulate matter and polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons, which
pose a significant health risk, and
is the largest source of PM2.5 in
the states area source emission
inventory.
Residential wood burning ac-
counted for 9,363 tons per year of
fine particulate matter in New
Jersey in 2002.
Delengowskis presentation
will show you the health risk to
you and your loved ones from
breathing wood smoke. Most ref-
erences will be from the U.S. De-
partment of Environmental Pro-
tection Agency.
The meeting will be held at the
Haddon Fortnightly, on the cor-
ner of Kings Highway and Grove
Street. Delengowski will speak at
7:45, before the regular business
meeting.
Refreshments will be served
following the meeting.

Schwab family thanks
community for support
It has been an overwhelming six months
since the premature passing of my hus-
band, Keith Schwab. However, through our
grief and profound sadness, we have been
surrounded and cared for by an unbeliev-
ably generous community of people who
continue to amaze me.
There are no words to express how
thankful we are for the kindness you have
shown each one of us and for the various
ways you have honored Keith. I couldnt
possibly mention all the people and vari-
ous acts of love during this time, but each
has been heart warming. Your beautiful
letters, the field of colorful soccer balls
brightening a tragic day, the continuous
flow of delicious meals and treats, the en-
couraging calls and texts, the chainsaw-
wielding crew who immediately took care
of a fallen tree, those who made calls and
generally took care of lots of stuff, the vis-
its, the rides, the diversions, the prayers
and the hugs have kept us going and given
us reasons to smile.
This past summer, a courageous commit-
tee of friends and family worked tirelessly
to pull together a fantastic day of soccer
and family fun to honor Keith at the Keith
Schwab Kick-Off Classic. I am forever
grateful to the committee, the volunteers,
the sponsors, the 42 teams, the players and
families, and all those who contributed for a
perfect day and touching tribute.
Thank you all. We appreciate everything
you have done and are thankful for this
beautiful community.
Leslie, Audrey, Sophia,
Hudson and Sam Schwab
H
ow many times have you seen
it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free hundred dollar bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other mo-
torists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its get-
ting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jer-
sey drivers arent the worst in the na-
tion, at least according to an annual
study recently released by CarInsur-
anceComparison.com. In fact, were
only the 32nd worst state-full of driv-
ers. If were only middle of the pack,
wed hate to be on the road in
Louisiana, whose drivers were collec-
tively ranked as the worst in the na-
tion.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its
worth repeating: Slow down out there!
Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive errati-
cally...every time you drive! Its just not
possible that your wife is giving birth
for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the
wheel. And our ready, willing and able
are out on the roads, trying to get to or
from a New Years celebration.
Lets make sure everyone gets where
theyre going safely. Lets all share the
road with each other, and lets stop
being such maniacs even if were not
the worst.
in our opinion
Slow down out there
Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year
Your thoughts
How bad is the driving out there? How can
we get better? Should more regulations
be put on New Jersey drivers to improve
safety? Let your thoughts be heard
through a letter to the editor.

of excellence for their submis-

Fifth grader Dorothy Ware, sec-
ond grader Aiden McGarry and
first grader Sinjin Spellmeyer
also received awards of excel-
lence for the film, literature and
photography works they respec-
tively submitted.
From Tatem Elementary
School, Lucy Fricke for literature,
Elle Volovich for photography
and Nina Tan for visuals arts, all
received awards of excellence.
Reece Volovich received an hon-
orable mention as well.
Each one of these students
should be proud of the work they
submitted, board president
Glenn Moramarco said. We are
happy to have them representing
our schools and our community.
Reflections is Americas oldest
and largest arts education pro-
gram of its kind. The program
was developed in 1969 by Col-
orados PTA President Mary Lou
Anderson to encourage students
to explore their talents and ex-
press themselves. Since then, the
Reflections program has inspired
millions of students to reflect on
a specific theme and create origi-
nal artwork.
This showcases the many tal-
ents of HMS students, encour-
ages students to explore ideas and
express their individuality and
enhances family engagement by
connecting families and schools
to one another and to their com-
munities, Moramarco said.
In other news:
The board honored outgo-
ing members Joe Ehrhardt,
Cheryl Laney and Steve Wein-
stein. All three members, includ-
ing Weinstein, who was president
of the board at the beginning of
the year, did not seek reelection.
The three new members, Carlton
Chin, Mary Fagan and David
Siedell, will be sworn in at the
boards January meeting.
Weinstein said the district is
special and urged board members
to "make a difference."
"We have some disagreements
with the community on occa-
sions, Weinstein said. "We have
some with people on the board.
But that's OK. That's what makes
it special."
The board granted approval
for three new stipend positions:
web content specialist, elemen-
tary technology facilitators and
concentration of studies program
facilitator.
Approval for four new
course proposals, Concentration
of Studies, Graphic Design,
American Sign Language I
and Yoga, were granted by the
board.

The Sun
As head coach of Haddonfield Memo-
rial High Schools swim team, Bob
Querubin keeps his swimmers focused
on the next goal instead of allowing
them to dwell on a result.
But it may be OK to dwell a bit as the
HMHS swim team has brought home
eight state titles with Querubin at the
helm, four apiece for both the girls and
boys teams.
As years go by and the gap between
teams closes, all you can do as a coach-
ing staff is present what you believe is
the right way to approach the season,
Querubin said. What we told the guys
is that the ultimate goal is to get back
and try to improve.
And that is exactly what Haddonfield
has done with Querubin.
Under Querubins direction, Haddon-
field reached the state final for the fifth
time in six years in 2010 ending a streak
of five consecutive titles for Mountain
Lakes High School. That moment was
the one Querubin looks at with the most
pride.
Of course, the most recent champi-
Warming up for winter sports
please see COACH, page 15
Coach expects to lean on seniors
as Bulldawgs chase state title
onship is usually No. 1 in your
mind and closer to the heart,
Querubin said. But aside from
being the most recent, that had
been by far the best season for me.
Not taking anything away from
the 2004 season, but that meant
more just because of what the
boys had been through.
Being able to look forward and
not dwell on losses became partic-
ularly important during a five-
year span in which Haddonfield
lost to Mountain Lakes in four ap-
pearances in the finals of the
NJSIAA Public B state tourna-
ment.
Querubin, a graduate of Cher-
ry Hill High School West, uses a
laid back personality to preach
his message of focusing on the
meet ahead and not failures be-
hind.
Its one thing to say that Bobs
teams have been successful year
after year. Thats hard to do, and
that tells you about the kind of
coach he is, said HMHS athletic
director Lefteris Banos. His com-
petition has nothing but good
things to say about him. That tells
you about the kind of person he
is.
Querubin expects to lean on
his seniors as the Bulldawgs
chase yet another state title.
"We've been lucky with these
guys and girls swimming as
many years as they have," Queru-
bin said. "Seniors typically know
what it takes, how it works and
how to get themselves prepared.
Hopefully, that growth will show
itself this season."
