Operator's Manual
The crane serial number is stamped on the crane ca pacity plates or on the Crane Rating Manual. The ca pacity plates or the Crane Rating Manual are located in the upper cab. The crane serial number should always be furnished when ordering parts for the crane, or when corresponding with the distributor or factory re garding the crane. The serial number is the only method the distributor or factory has of ensuring that the correct parts will be furnished.
In the event the serial number can not be found on the capacity plate, a number is stamped on the top of the bumper on the right side of the carrier and on the right side of the upper frame just above the boom hoist cylin der lugs. This number can then be used to identify the crane.

Operator's Manual
Throughout this manual, reference is made to the left, right, front, and rear pertaining to direction and locations. These reference directions are relative to the operator sitting in the operator's seat of the carrier cab with the upper directly over the front of the carrier, unless otherwise stated. Danger, warning, and caution captions, as well as, special notes are used throughout this manual and on the crane to emphasize important and critical instructions. If any instruction, caution, warning, or danger labels, decals, or plates become lost, damaged, or unreadable, they must be replaced. Information contained on such labels, decals, and plates is important and failure to follow the information they contain could result in an accident. Replace ment labels, decals, and plates can be ordered through your distributor. For the purpose of this manual, and the labels which are placed on the crane, danger, warning, and caution captions and notes are defined as follows:
DANGER
An operating procedure, practice, etc. which, if not correctly followed, may result in severe personal injury, dismemberment or loss of life.
WARNING
An operating procedure, practice, etc. which, if not correctly followed, may result in per sonal injury.
CAUTION
An operating procedure, practice, etc. which, if not correctly followed, may result in damage to or destruction of equipment or property.

Note: An operating procedure step, condition, etc. which is essential in order for the process to be completed properly.

Typical Live Mast As A Boom 1. During all transporting and operations utilizing the live mast, do not allow it to be lowered below 2 above horizontal on 248 Series Cranes or 3 above horizontal on 238 and LS-278H Series Cranes, unless supported by an auxiliary lifting device. The live mast will fall, causing live mast and/or equipment damage. 2. Do not tie the live mast down during transport unless the live mast is securely supported on blocking. If the live mast is tied down onto blocking, ensure that there is adequate slack in the boom hoist ropes to prevent the ropes from becoming tight and damaging the live mast. 3. Ensure the live mast lower limit kickout switch is properly adjusted. Adjustment procedure is as follows: (Refer to Figure on the following page.)

Typical Live Mast Switch Adjustment Note: The LS-278H and 238 series cranes live mast lower limit sets at 3 above horizontal and the 248 series cranes live mast lower limit sets at 2 above horizontal. a. Position live mast to proper angle. b. On 238 and 248 series cranes, loosen setscrew (4) and properly adjust switch arm (3) and roller (2) to contact the stricker plate (1). Continue to move the switch arm (3) against the stricker plate (1) until a click" (indicating the switch is activated) is heard. Tighten the setscrew (4). c. On LS-278 series cranes, loosen capscrews (8) and properly adjust position of switch (7) so the switch arm (6) on switch (7) contacts stricker plate (1). Continue to move the switch arm (6) against the stricker plate (11) until a click" (indicating the switch is activated) is heard. Tighten bolts and nuts (8) to secure switch (7). 2 of 2 138-278 Series No. 36
