Feet are a breeding ground for bacteria Eachfoothas250,000sweatglandsandproducesaboutacup(500ml)ofsweatdaily.Excessive perspiration,combinedwithbacteria,cancauseoffensivefootodour.Thebacteriathatgrowonthe solesoffeetactuallyproducegasessimilartothosereleasedbybacteriausedinproducingcheese; hencethenamecheesyfeet. Treating the condition Toreducethegrowthofbacteriaandtotreattheproblem,thesweatywarmconditionsaroundthe footshouldbeeliminated. Thefollowingtreatmentsmaybeuseful,dependingonthecauseoftheproblem: Mildantisepticsolutionsorsoapscanbeuseful. Methylatedspiritsappliedonceortwiceaday(especiallybetweenthetoes)canhelpdry theskin. Avoidsyntheticsocksandwearshoesthatallowgoodaircirculationandallowthefootto breathe(leatherisgood). Moisture-wickingsocksmayhelp. Changeyourshoesregularlytoallowthemtodryandair. Topical(appliedtotheskin)ororal(bymouth)antibioticsmaybeprescribed,insevere cases,tokilloffthebacteria.
