Biggest Loser
contestants gather
1,500 pounds of
items for Otsego
County Food
Pantry
Contestants in the current Biggest Loser competition, organized by the Alpine
Sports Pubs Jamie Newhouse, recently donated 1,500 pounds of non-perishable food
items to the Otsego County Food Pantry. The donation resulted from a Team
Challenge, which offered a three-pound advantage in the Biggest Loser competition
as well as a gift card from Alpine Sports Pub to the team bringing in the most items
for the Food Pantry.
The Skinny Wanna-bes team, with nearly 700 items, won the challenge, and the
total number of items brought in by all teams reached 2,189. Shown here are Jamie
Newhouse (at left) and Colleen Hickey of the Alpine Sports Pub dropping off items
gathered to the Food Pantry warehouse.

WEATHER:
By Deb Hagen-Foley
February is American Heart Month and Go Red
for Women Month. These events are intended to
bring attention to the fact that cardiovascular dis-
ease is the number one cause of death for both
men and women. Women often do not believe
they are at risk for heart disease.
In the United States, someone dies of cardiovas-
cular disease every 33 seconds, or about one mil-
lion people annually. Cardiovascular disease is
often preventable by changing the behaviors that
can put you at risk, including changing your diet.
Eating a diet low in saturated fats, sodium, and
cholesterol can help to reduce the risk of cardio-
vascular disease. Numerous foods have been
shown to improve heart health.
You have probably seen the commercials that
claim oatmeal and other whole grain cereals are
good at helping to control weight and in lowering
cholesterol. Those claims are true. People who
report eating whole grains tend to be leaner and
have a lower risk of heart disease. The antioxi-
dants, phytoestrogens and phytosteroids in whole
grains protect against coronary disease. Add
raisins or berries to your cereal for a doubly heart
healthy breakfast.
Eating a cup of mixed berries daily for eight
weeks was associated with increased levels of
HDL or "good" cholesterol and lowered blood
pressure in one study. Other studies have shown
similar benefits from eating berries regularly. It is
believed that the polyphenols in berries increase
levels of nitric oxide, helping to relax blood vessels
and lowering blood pressure. Antioxidants in
raisins fight the growth of a type of bacteria that
can cause inflammation and gum disease.
Probiotics in yogurt are also protective against
gum disease. Up to 50 percent of American adults
are affected by gum disease. Persons with gum
disease are twice as likely to have heart problems.
Eating raisins and yogurt can help protect you
from both gum disease and heart disease.
Eat beans to lower cholesterol. It is believed
that the soluble fiber in beans binds cholesterol
and prevents it from being absorbed in the body.
Beans also contain flavonoids that slow the bond-
ing of platelets in the blood, which can lower the
risk of heart attack and strokes. Reap the benefits
of consuming beans on heart health by consum-
ing about one-half cup of beans daily.
Flavonoids are also found in chocolate and
wine. Consuming moderate amounts of dark
chocolate helps to thin the blood, improving heart
health. Dark chocolate may also reduce inflam-
mation and boost the immune system. A com-
pound in cocoa, epicatechin, increases nitric
oxide and improves blood vessel health and helps
prevent high blood pressure. Milk chocolate does
not contain sufficient amounts of epicatechin. If
you are going to eat chocolate for heart health,
make sure to choose dark chocolate.
People who drink moderate amounts of alcohol
are less likely to have heart disease than those
who do not drink alcohol. Moderate alcohol use
raises "good" HDL cholesterol, decreases inflam-
mation and helps to thin the blood, preventing
blood clots. Drinking moderately also increases
estrogen, which protects the heart. This may be
especially beneficial to postmenopausal women
who are at greater risk for heart disease due to
their reduced estrogen levels.
Include two or more servings of fish weekly to
reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. Fish,
particularly the oily kinds, like salmon and tuna,
contain omega-3 fats, which lower triglycerides in
the blood. Omega-3s also lower blood pressure
and can prevent irregular heart rhythms. Canola
oil, flaxseed oil and walnuts also are good sources
of omega-3s.
People who eat nuts two to four times per week
have a lower incidence of heart disease. Walnuts,
pecans, almonds, pine nuts, hazelnuts and
peanuts contain monounsaturated fats that are
good for heart health. Another common snack,
popcorn, is also good for heart health. Popcorn
contains three times more of the antioxidant
polyphenols than kidney beans. Other foods that
contribute to heart health are apples, green tea,
bananas, pomegranates, and tomatoes.
For the sake of your heart, incorporate moder-
ate amounts of these foods into your balanced
diet.
March is National Womens History month. In celebration
of this month, each year the Gaylord Area Branch of the
American Association of University Women (AAUW) honors
a woman for making history in Otsego County. Traditionally,
the award has gone to a woman first in her field who has
created a lasting legacy and who continues to make a differ-
ence in Otsego County. This year, the award goes to Betsy
Hogan Sanders, a Gaylord native who taught American sol-
diers overseas before returning to Gaylord to teach for more
than thirty years. During her years as an educator at Gaylord
High School, she taught English and Advanced Placement
English and left a lasting impact on her students. She also
has helped maintain the successful family business, Hogans
Jewelers. Sanders will be honored for her work at the
AAUWs 21st annual Woman Making History luncheon.
The luncheon will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m.
at Michaywe Inn the Woods. Entertainment and a silent auc-
tion to raise scholarship funds for local girls and women will
be featured at the event as well. Tickets are $22.50 and can be
purchased at Saturn Booksellers. Among the previous win-
ners of the prestigious Woman Making History award
include Daune Weiss, Patricia Nelson, Gladys Solokis, Bea
Kelly and last years honoree Patricia Osburn. AAUW
advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, edu-
cation, philanthropy, and research. For more information
about the AAUW Gaylord Area Branch go to http://gaylord-
mi.aauw.net/.

Chamber Awards Continued...
Directors Chair, Justin Kowatch, was intro-
duced and the award presentations got
underway.
This years award winners, most of which
were presented by Paul Beachnau and Justin
Kowatch, were:
You Made it Happen Award The events
longest running award that has been pre-
sented since 1983. This years recipient was
the Louis M. Groen Nature Preserve near
Johannesburg, and John Burt and Mike
Tarbutton accepted the award. Donated to
the county by Louis and Edna Groen, the
beautiful 764-acre preserve opened this past
August and features an extensive trail net-
work, remnants of an early 20th century log-
ging camp and the Echo Valley Ranch, and
the gorgeous Johannesburg and Kujawa
Lakes. It will offer Otsego County residents
and visitors activities such as hiking, snow
shoeing, and cross country skiing and more
for generations to come.
Gordon G. Everett Memorial Bell Tower
Award The new Otsego County Animal
Shelter received this years award, which has
been presented since 1998 recognizing new
construction or renovation projects in the
community that exemplify investment in the
community and maintaining an Alpine spirit
and theme. John Burt and Missy FitzGerald
accepted the award for the wonderfully
designed and constructed, energy efficient
Otsego County Animal Shelter building
located on Fairview Road, replacing the out-
dated, undersized facility the shelter former-
ly occupied.
Golden Pineapple Award Also presented
since 1998 in recognizing area businesses for
their excellence in service, quality, and get-
ting the job done right the first time with a
smile. There were two award winners this
year: Thrifty Print and Northwestern Bank.
Bob and Pat Webster accepted the award for
Thrifty Print, which was established by Bobs
father, John Webster, in 1978. Tim Hall
accepted the award for Northwestern Bank,
the I can do that banking institution whos
mission statement emphasizes always
exceeding customers expectations and
working together to develop lasting cus-
tomer relationships.
Chairmans Award Presented by
Chamber Board of Directors outgoing Chair,
David Hintz, this years award, recognizing a
member of the Chamber of Commerce who
exhibits a commitment to his or her business
and the community, went to Ed Doss of
Waters RV Center. Among his many commu-
nity contributions are Eds ongoing involve-
ment with the Chamber, where he has
served as the chairman of the Government
Affairs committee since its inception in 2008.
He is also a member of the Gaylord Rotary,
where he is a Paul Harris Fellow, and serves
on the Downtown Renaissance Project com-
mittee.
Chamber Volunteer of the Year Presented
since 2002, this years award recipient was
Matt Barresi, director of the Gaylord
Regional Airport. Barresi has been involved
in many community proj-
ects, programs and organiza-
tions, including assisting
with the Alpenfrost winter
festival, the Otsego County
Historical Society, the
Kiwanis Club of Gaylord, and
he is a 2010/2011 Leadership
Otsego County graduate.
Barresi has spearheaded and
organized the annual Wings
Over Gaylord airshow held
on Fathers Day weekend for
several years, an event that
has become a signature early
summer celebration in the
Alpine Village, drawing visi-
tors from across the state
and beyond. He also helped
initiate the annual Turkey
Trot run/walk, which bene-
fits the Friendship Housing
Center.
Ambassador of the Year
Presented since 2006, Karen
McCaffery of Northwestern
Bank, who has served over
two years as a Chamber
Ambassador, was this years
award recipient. Barb
Bourdlaies and Elaine
Bunker presented the award
to Karen McCaffery, recog-
nizing her work as a
Chamber Ambassador who
puts forth extraordinary
efforts on behalf of the
chamber, going above and
beyond the expectations of
the program.
Daune Weiss Memorial
Businessperson of the Year
Presented since 2000, this
years recipient was Jack
Thompson, director of the
University Center in Gaylord.
This award recognizes a
business leader who best
exemplifies Daune Weiss'
generosity in giving time,
money, staff and/or facilities
for community benefit. In
addition to his ongoing work
in continuing to make the
University Center such a val-
ued community asset, Jack
Thompson serves as presi-
dent of the Otsego County
Commission on Aging,
member of the Leadership
Otsego County Steering
Committee, Vice-Chairman
of the Otsego County
Economic Alliance, is a
Gaylord Rotary member, was
recently appointed to the
Board of Directors for the
Downtown Development
Authority, and initiated and
continues to promote,
implement and serve as a
leader for the Downtown

It is a well-recognized name that symbol-
izes services and programs that provide a
means for people in need to get back on
their feet and regain their treasured inde-
pendence. Goodwill has been around since
1902, when a Boston area Methodist
Minister named Rev. Edgar Helms began col-
lecting used household goods and clothing,
and hired those who were down on their
luck to mend and repair those goods for
resale. Here in Northern Michigan, Goodwill
opened their doors at Asgard Enterprises in
1972, and today the non-profit organization
offers vocational, housing, transportation,
nutritional and family strengthening pro-
grams across the region.
Goodwill also continues to offer gently
used clothing, household items, books,
home dcor accessories and more at their
Retail and Donation Centers. In our area,
centers are located in Petoskey and Gaylord,
employing a total of 34 people, utilizing pro-
ceeds from sales at each location to help
support programs throughout Northern
Michigan that help people overcome barriers
to independence.
Part of our business model is also being
green, observes Ruth Blick, Director of
Marketing and Communications for
Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan.
Everything that is donated to our stores is
either reduced, reused or recycled. Items
that come in that dont meet quality stan-
dards go thru our salvage program. We are
also in partnership with Dell Reconnect and
we accept all types of computer equipment
and recycle those items. Many people dont
realize that a computer monitor can contain
up to a pound of lead. We are able to safely
recycle those units.
Goodwill also recycles metal items, card-
board, purses, belts, shoes, books and cloth-
ing. The gently used items on the sales floor
follow a rotation model where they are on
display for four weeks a regular price, then
half-off for a week, then reduced per item to
99-cents for adult sizes and 49-cents for chil-
dren sizes, and those items are finally recy-
cled if not sold.
So there are always items at sale prices
when someone visits our store, observes
Ruth Blick. People want to see different
items on display when they visit us.
Thousands of items are regularly coming in
and going out of our stores.
Submitting items for donation is easy.
Each location has a drive up donation cen-
ter, open 7 days a week, and members of the
Goodwill team will happily unload items
from the donators vehicle.
The 6,000 square foot Goodwill Retail and
Donation Center at 1361 Pineview Drive in
Gaylord is open Monday through Saturday
from 9 am to 7 pm, and Sunday from 11am
until 6 pm. The 6,700 square foot Goodwill
Retail and Donation Center at 1600
Anderson Road in Petoskey is open Monday
through Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm, and
Sunday from 11am until 6 pm.

The 2013 A Higher Call Mens Conference
returns March 16th, to the Gaylord Evangelical
Free Church in Gaylord. The theme of this
years conference is Bulletproof and features an
outstanding lineup of speakers including an
Army Ranger featured in a blockbuster movie, a
Navy Seal, and a 2 time collegiate national
hockey champion.
Jeff Struecker was a decorated member of
the U.S. Army's most elite fighting corps and
was prominently featured in the national best-
seller "Black Hawk Down", later made into a
major motion picture. In the city streets of
Mogadishu, Somalia, Jeff was faced with his
greatest fears. He was forced to rely on his skills
and his "bulletproof faith" to bring him
through some of the most intense combat the
U.S. Military has seen since the Vietnam War.
Today, he challenges and inspires audiences
with his gripping account of that experience
under fire and in the face of death. A man of
courage and conviction, Jeff Struecker uses his
personal story of survival on the battlefield to
teach his listeners how they, too, can be pre-
pared for any circumstances life has to offer.
Days before Chad Williams was to report to
military duty in Great Lakes, Illinois, he turned
on a television and was greeted with the horri-
fying images of his mentor, US Navy SEAL Scott
Helvenston, being brutally murdered in a pre-
meditated ambush on the roads of Fallujah,
Iraq. Steeled in his resolve, Chad followed in
Scott's footsteps and completed the US mili-
tary's most difficult and grueling training to
become a Navy SEAL. One of only 13 from a
class of 173 to make it straight through to grad-
uation, Chad served his country on SEAL
Teams One and Seven for five years, complet-
ing tours of duty in the Philippines, Saudi
Arabia, Bahrain, and Iraq.
Author of his new book SEAL of God, Chad
shares his journey through the grueling Naval
Ops training and onto the streets of Iraq, where
he witnessed the horrors of war up close. Chad
shares his own radical conversion story and
talks about how he draws on his own experi-
ences as a SEAL to help others better under-
stand the depths of Christ's sacrifice and love.
After Ryan Sharpe's son, Maverick, almost
died, he began sharing his story. It is a unique
story, full of victories and failures, tragedies
and triumphs. It is sure to provide hope and
inspiration for others. Ryan is a 2-time colle-
giate hockey national champion who speaks at
numerous events on topics such as trusting
God, improving your marriage, parenting, lead-
ership and teamwork.
Ticket deals are available for early orders and
larger groups. For more information, please

The Gaylord Blue Devils REACH OUT hockey game, held on
Friday, February 1st at the Otsego County Sportsplex, raised

Wars Post 1518. The Blue Devils, wearing camouflage uniforms
for the game, were matched against Petoskey who won the
game with a final score of 5 to 3.
In addition to raising funds for the future VFW building, the
game also brought awareness that our Veterans need the sup-
port not only from the nation but our community as well.
Veterans were offered free admission to the game, and dona-
tions were obtained through jersey and banner sponsorships, as

Nearly 60 area children, and their parents,
turned out for a morning ice fishing adventure
last Saturday, February 16th, at the annual
Northland Sportsmens Clubs Winter Ice
Fishing Derby event held just off the shore of
Otsego Lake State Park. The event coincided
with the DNR Free Fishing Weekend; so fish-
ing licenses were not required.
At the end of the morning excursion, 20 kids
had caught 44 fish (all perch), and they head-
ed over to the Northland Sportsmens Club to
enjoy a much-anticipated lunch. Awards were
also given at the Club in several age cate-
gories, and included:
First Fish Caught Justin Breckow
Age 5 and under category
- Biggest Fish Leland Fox
- Smallest Fish Lilly Jarrett
- Most Fish Bridgett
Zeilinger
Age 6 to 10 category
- Biggest Fish Dillon Bott (also the overall
winner with his seven and a half inch perch)
- Smallest Fish Luke Dipzinski
- Most Fish Evan Rombach (also the over-
all winner with six fish caught)
Age 11 to 15 category

aOtsego County United Way Board of
Directors has set outcome goals and priority
areas for community investments.
Our United Way was very involved with the
community-wide Quality of Life assessment
conducted last year, says Tom Mammoser,
United Way Board Chair. With budgets
stretched we feel it is important to focus our
resources on areas that will have the most
impact and benefit to the community. We are
very diligent in using donor dollars wisely and
understanding what the community feels are
the areas of greatest need was vital in helping
us set our community investment priorities.
To learn more about the Quality of Life
assessment results go online to:
www.otsego.org/qol
Our Community Investment applications
have been sent out to interested organizations
and are due back to our office on March 1,
states United Way Executive Director Lorraine
Manary. We continue to focus our impact on
Education, Income and Health, the building
blocks of a strong community. We know that by
focusing on a quality education for our youth
and encouraging academic completion, we
substantially increase their ability to find a job
that pays a living wage. This means they are
more likely to be financially stable and inde-
pendent. And of course, even if people have a
quality education and adequate income, it
means nothing if they do not have their
health.
The outcomes United Way is working toward
include:
EDUCATION Description: Helping children
and youth achieve their potential. Priority
Outcomes: Children develop and increase lit-
eracy skills to grade level by 4th grade. Young
people graduate from high school or achieve a
GED.
INCOME Description: Helping families
become financial stable and independent,
while ensuring that basic needs are met.
Priority Outcomes: Families have support for
basic needs, including adequate safe shelter
and food. Lower-income families move toward
financial stability & self-sufficiency.
HEALTH Description: Improving peoples
health. Priority Outcomes: Obesity is reduced
by community members taking advantage of
healthy food options and exercise, including
outdoor recreation. Youth and adults avoid ille-
gal and prescription drug abuse.
Last year, Otsego County United Way invest-
ed over $134,000 in effective health and human
service programs reaching local residents. In
addition to providing support for programs of
agency partners, United Way operates these
vital programs Volunteer Center, RSVP, First
Call for Help, and supports 2-1-1, a local hous-
ing resource specialist, the A.C.S. Road to
Recovery program, and more.
It is getting harder and
harder for our agencies to
help those in need, especially
with the cuts from local, state and federal gov-
ernment, said Manary. Agencies are relying
on us more and more for their funding. While
some people give to multiple agencies, Manary
said United Way contributions are unique
because they help each United Way agency at
the same time: those programs you are familiar
with along with programs you may not be
aware of. All are Otsego County programs and
serve local people. We dont simply fund agen-
cies; we fund programs that will help the com-
munity reach outcomes that benefit us all.
Tax-deductible contributions to the Otsego
County United Way can be mailed to 116 E.
Fifth St., Gaylord MI 49735. Gifts can be made
online by going to: www.otsegounitedway.org
and selecting Donate. For more information
about United Way call 732-8929 or email:

Its probably not on your calendar, but
World Yoga Day takes place on Feb. 24.
As more people have discovered its
healthful benefits, yoga has grown in
popularity. But whether or not you prac-
tice yoga, you can apply its lessons to
other areas of your life such as invest-
ing.
Specifically, consider the following
yoga-related themes and how they
might translate into investment habits
that may be beneficial:
Balance If you observe advanced
yoga practitioners, you will be amazed
at the balance they exhibit during cer-
tain positions. But for serious yoga stu-
dents, the idea of balance goes beyond
physical movements and extends to a
concept of life that emphasizes, among
other things, an avoidance of extremes.
As an investor, you too need to avoid
extremes, such as investing too aggres-
sively, too conservatively or too sporad-
ically. By building a balanced portfolio,
and by investing regularly, you can help
improve your chances of making
progress toward your financial goals.
Flexibility Among its many bene-
fits, yoga helps people increase their
flexibility and greater flexibility
results in fewer injuries and an
increased capacity to enjoy many physi-
cal activities. As an investor, you need to
be flexible enough to adjust your portfo-
lio as needed while still following a long-
term strategy thats appropriate for your
individual goals, risk tolerance and time
horizon.
Relaxation For yoga students,
proper relaxation is essential to achiev-
ing mental equanimity, emotional bal-
ance and inner strength. But relaxation
doesnt always come easily even
experienced yoga practitioners need to
work at it. As an investor, you also may
need to train yourself to relax because,
given the ups and downs of the market,
its not hard to become overwrought
and make ill-advised decisions based on
short-term events. Staying calm and
maintaining a long-term view of things
may help you make better investment
decisions.
Positive thinking Our own
thoughts and actions are largely respon-
sible for creating our happiness and
success, according to yoga teachings.
And positive thinking can play a key role
in investing, too. For example, if you
were to constantly look at negative
headlines, you might conclude that it is
pointless to invest for the future
because external events economic
instability abroad, political squabbles at
home, natural disasters and so on will
just disrupt your plans. Consequently,
you might decide not to invest, or invest
in such a way that can make progress
toward your financial goals difficult. But
if you maintain a positive attitude, you
may be more inclined to invest wisely
for your future.
Visualization
In yoga, visuali-
zation is often
used to reduce
stress. At any
given time, you
might find it diffi-
cult to relax, but
you can use your
imagination to see
yourself and
put yourself in a
relaxed state. As
an investor, you
need to visualize
your goals, such as
a comfortable
retirement, before
you can define a
strategy to help
you work toward
them. By seeing
yourself where
you want to be,
youll be motivat-
ed to take the
actions necessary
to work toward
getting there.
Try putting the
principles of yoga to work they may
help you become a better investor.

Pizzerias throughout Petoskey are banding
together to support the students of the Public
Schools of Petoskey with their annual Pizza
Pizzazz Promotion. On Monday, February 25th
the participating pizzerias will donate $1 for
every pizza they sell that day to the Petoskey
Education Foundation.
We hope everyone in Petoskey will order
pizza on Monday, says foundation Chairman
Jim Kan. Our goal is to raise around $1,000
through this event.
It doesnt matter the size of the pizza, or if
you buy it for lunch or dinner, the pizza places
will all contribute $1 per pizza to the founda-
tion. This is a fun way for us to support our
schools, said Randy Crim of Northern Lights
Recreation Center. Its a good cause and good
way to get the whole community involved in a
fund-raiser, he added.
The Petoskey Education Foundation uses the
funds to support scholarships for students and
mini-grants for programs within the schools.
With reductions in funding for the schools,
were seeing more and more demands on the
foundation, Kan noted. He says fund raising
events like this are important to help them to
be able to fund programs that might not other-
wise be funded. Thats why were so grateful to
the pizza places in town for their generous sup-
port with this promotion, Kan said.
Pizza places that are participating in the pro-
motion include: BC Pizza, Corner Grocer,
Galley Gourmet, Jets Pizza, Mancinos, Mighty
Fine Pizza, Noggin Room at Staffords Perry
Hotel, Northern Lights Recreation Center,
Palette Bistro, Randys Mighty Good, and Spicy
Bobs.
If youre not able to eat pizza that day you
can make a donation to the Petoskey
Education Foundation, 1130 Howard St.,
Petoskey, MI 49770.

By Jim Akans
We are the homeless in our homeland,
we are millions without names, and we
stand before the eyes of God and believe
that every mans the same.
Taken from the lyrics of a song by the
independent band, Stormfront, these
words have never range truer for so many
who unexpectedly find themselves with-
out a place to live due to loss of work, the
repercussions of substance abuse, or
crushed by an avalanche of unpaid med-
ical bills resulting from illness or disability.
Yet here in northern Michigan, a non-
profit agency called The Friendship
Housing Center provides a temporary
haven where families and individuals who
suddenly find themselves homeless can
begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
Marilyn Kaczanowski, Executive
Director of Friendship Housing Center,
states, We have always been more than a
temporary housing resource. Our key
focus is employment, income, re-housing,
basic living skills; what it takes to help
these individuals and families find and
fund permanent housing based on their
needs.
Founded in 1991 as The Friendship
Shelter, Inc., the mission of this Gaylord-
based organization is firmly focused on
people first, providing shelter and a
series of social services that help those in
need transition back to self-sufficiency
with dignity and respect.
Kaczanowski states, People find them-
selves with nowhere to go, and we are one
of the few shelters in the northern
Michigan area they can come to. While
people are here we help them learn to
manage daily affairs and living skills and
prepare them to get back on their feet.
In addition to providing meals and a
place to live, services offered include
transportation to and from the town of
Gaylord, approximately seven miles away,
to search for employment and meet those
work schedules when a job is secured, go
to medical appointments, or procure
items individuals will need to re-establish
their lives when they leave the shelter.
The Friendship Housing Center also pro-
vides classes designed to improve finan-
cial management and parenting skills,
hygiene and nutrition information.
People can stay at the center for up to
ninety days, notes Kaczanowski. During
that time, we help to point those individu-
als in the right direction and try to instill
that the way out of poverty is through
education and skills.
In 2012, The Friendship Housing Center
served 286 people, including 146 individu-
als from Otsego County. These families
and individuals came to the Friendship
Housing Center to seeking refuge from
lives that had been suddenly been turned
upside down.
Homelessness ends when these folks
ultimately find a place to live. Michigan
has established a Campaign to End
Homelessness, driven by public and pri-
vate groups across the state working
toward a single goal; making stable, sus-
tainable, and affordable housing available
to every person in Michigan. Programs
such as Housing First and Rapid Re-
housing have refocused much public
funding away from emergency shelters, so
organizations such as Friendship Housing
Center must rely more heavily on the
communities they serve for funding.
There are many ways to contribute to
the mission of the Friendship Housing
Center, including donating goods, sup-
plies, volunteering time, or offering finan-
cial assistance. Another way to help is
through the recently created Ron Chavey
Friendship Fund, an endowment fund at
the Otsego County Community
Foundation established for the Friendship
Housing Center. A grant from Scott and
Janice Lampert started this fund, and the
Community Foundation can accept gifts
of cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, bequest,
etc as contributions to this fund.
For further information, or to make a
contribution to the Friendship Housing
Center, visit www.thefriendshipshelter.org

Choosing a locally owned store
generates almost four times as
much economic benefit for the
surrounding region as shopping at
a chain, a new study has conclud-
ed. The analysis also found that
eating at a local restaurant pro-
duces more than twice the local
economic impact of dining at a
chain restaurant.
The research firm Civic
Economics analyzed data from fif-
teen independent retailers and
seven independent restaurants, all
located in Salt Lake City, and com-
pared their impact on the local
economy with four chain retail
stores (Barnes & Noble, Home
Depot, Office Max, and Target) and
three national restaurant chains
(Darden, McDonalds, and P.F.
Changs).
The study found that the local
retailers return an average of 52
percent of their revenue to the
local economy, compared with just
14 percent for the chain retailers.
Similarly, the local restaurants re-
circulate an average of 79 percent
of their revenue locally, compared
to 30 percent for the chain eateries.
What accounts for the difference?
Independent businesses spend
much more on local labor. They
also procure more goods for resale
locally and rely much more heavily
on local providers for services like
accounting and printing. This
means that much of the money a
customer spends at a local store or
restaurant is re-spent within the
local economy, supporting other
businesses and jobs.

Daily Word
THURSDAY: Luke 15:22-24 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 22 But the father said to his
slaves, Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and
sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24
for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.
And they began to celebrate.
FRIDAY: Proverbs 19:23 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 23 The fear of the Lord leads to life,
So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.
SATURDAY: 2 Samuel 6:10-15 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 10 And David was unwilling to
move the ark of the Lord into the city of David with him; but David took it aside to the
house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 Thus the ark of the Lord remained in the house of
Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his house-
hold.12 Now it was told King David, saying, The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-edom
and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God. David went and brought up the
ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness. 13 And so it
was, that when the bearers of the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox
and a fatling. 14 And David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, and David was
wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of
the Lord with shouting and the sound of the trumpet.
SUNDAY: Psalm 105:3 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 3 Glory in His holy name; Let the heart
of those who seek the Lord be glad.
MONDAY: Acts 2:46-47 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 46 Day by day continuing with one
mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals
together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the
people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
TUESDAY: Zephaniah 3:14-15 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 14 Shout for joy, O daughter of
Zion! Shout in triumph, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of
Jerusalem! 15 The Lord has taken away His judgments against you, He has cleared away
your enemies. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; You will fear disaster no more.
WEDNESDAY: 1 Peter 1:7-9 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 7 so that the proof of your
faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be
found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and
though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but
believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 obtaining as
the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.

PASTORS PERSPECTIVE
Reverend
Karen
Huddelson
First Presbyterian
Church of Gaylord
Why it's those moments that are just between God the Creator
and myself - His Created.
When I look back on my life I can honestly say that there have
been some incredible moments when God 'met' me exactly
where I was at....
It was in those moments that I could feel God's Presence
come alive inside - those private and personal moments were
just for me - it was as if God was coming alongside me to give
me a gentle stroke across the side of my cheek - softly commu-
nicating - "This is just for you, My Beloved child" and I would
inevitably open my eyes wider, expand my heart wider and look
around privately, as if to say "What was that" Was that God
speaking to me, communicating to me, ministering to me?"
So this is how I feel alive. Alive because God is very present in
my everyday life....Alive, Indeed.
Thoughts on...What makes you come alive??

Parents, teachers and scout leaders, tell your
kids to start the drawing engines and partici-
pate in the annual Endangered Species Day
Youth Art Contest, an integral part of the eighth
annual national Endangered Species Day, cele-
brated on May 17, 2013.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and
numerous conservation organizations will
observe Endangered Species Day to recognize
conservation efforts underway across the
nation aimed at helping Americas imperiled
species. This year also commemorates the 40th
Anniversary of the Endangered Species Act.
Started in 2006 by the United States
Congress, Endangered Species Day is a celebra-
tion of the nations rarest plant and animal
species. The Youth Art Contest provides stu-
dents from kindergarten to high school with an
opportunity to learn about threatened and
endangered species and express their knowl-
edge and support through artwork. Young
artists who are home schooled and participate
in youth groups are also eligible to submit their
art. Previous winners have come from
California, Minnesota, New Jersey, Louisiana
and as far away as Alaska. Entries must be
postmarked by March 15, 2013.
This year, the Endangered Species Day Youth
Art Contest finalists will be judged by a presti-
gious panel of artists, photographers and con-
servationists, including Wyland, renowned
marine life artist; Jack Hanna, host of Jack
Hannas Into the Wild; David Littschwager, a
freelance photographer and regular contribu-
tor to National Geographic Magazine; Susan
Middletown, a photographer who has collabo-
rated with Littschwager and whose own work
has been published in four books; and Alice
Tangerini, botanical illustrator for the
Smithsonian Institution.
The International Child Art Foundation
(ICAF) will select the 40 semifinalists from
thousands of entries. It takes empathy, direct
action and awareness to prevent the extinction
of endangered species. Art can certainly play
an important role. The Youth Art Contest is an
ideal platform to engage the next generation.
Winners will be chosen in four categories: K-
Grade 2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-
12, and will receive plaques and art supply gift
packs. In addition, one grand
prize winner will be honored
with their name engraved on a
special trophy and receive a
round-trip flight to
Washington, D.C. with one
guardian to attend a reception
in May. The grand prize win-
ner will also receive art sup-
plies and a special art lesson
(via Skype) from Wyland, the
artist.
The Youth Art Contest is
organized by the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, the
Endangered Species Coalition,
the Association of Zoos and
Aquariums and the
International Child
Art Foundation. For
more information,
including judging criteria and
an entry form, visit http://www.endangered-
speciesday.org/.
North Central Michigan College will offer workshops for farm-
ers and gardeners on Mondays from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. These
workshops are presented by Corporate and Community
Education at North Central, the Michigan Land Use Institute
(MLUI) and the USDA Risk Management Agency. All will be held
on the Petoskey campus in Room 536 in the Student and

Saturday, March 2nd, American Idol Finalist Matt Giraud
will be taking the stage at the Crooked Tree Arts Center at
7:30pm. Matt is a pianist, vocalist and Michigan native who
appeared on the 8th season of the popular television show.
Matt attended college at Western Michigan University
where he studied vocal jazz under the legendary Steve
Zegree. Believe it or not, Matt didnt play the piano until he
got to WMU and found a piano in the lobby of his dorm.
During his stint at WMU, he put together the Giraud
Mattei project, which won a Downbeat Magazine Award for
Outstanding College Performance, Blues/Pop/Rock Group.
The Presidents office at WMU then awarded Matt a $1,000
scholarship, which, like all good musicians, he spent on an
instrument. Owning that keyboard enabled him to join a
cover band which performed all over western Michigan.
With his new repertoire Matt was able to get a job as a
piano player in a dueling piano bar. (More amazingly, this
guy who began playing just a few short years ago now has
an endorsement deal with Yamaha pianos.)
Fast forward to 2008, American Idol Season 8. Matt went
to his first Idol audition with no advance notice. He was
asked by a friend to come along for moral support, and
decided as long as he was there he may as well audition.
Several stellar performances led him to the top 11, where he
was eliminated in the voting but stayed on as a result of the
first ever judges save. He eventually finished 5th, and his
soulful performance of My Funny Valentine led to out-
standing reviews from Simon Cowell. On the subsequent
national American Idol Live tour Matt received rave reviews,
and has on numerous occasions been considered to having
stole the show. He has also appeared on The Tonight Show
with Jay Leno, The Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show,
Access Hollywood, Live with Regis and Kelly, and The Larry
King Live Special featuring the Top Ten Idol contestants of
that year.
Matts success on American Idol has also led to more than
just television appearances. While playing a private event in
Los Angeles put together by Idol creator Simon Fuller, he
was discovered by vocalist Anna Wilson. Anna flew Matt to
Nashville to record a duet of the country classic You Dont
Know Me, which was released on i-tunes and quickly rose
to #1 on the i-tunes Jazz chart. The popular rendition also
appears on Annas latest CD project, Countrypolitan Duets
which features singers like Keith Urban and Billy Dean.
Matts soulful vocals have caught the attention of several
other notable artists, including chart topper Jim Brickman.
Matt appears as the vocalist on Thank You, Brickmans
2010 single that reached #16 on the Hot AC and AC charts.
See Matt perform Saturday, March 2nd at 7:30pm at
Crooked Tree Arts Center; reserved seats available at
www.crookedtree.org, or by calling 231.347.4337.

As of Sunday, February 24th, the East
Jordan Save-A-Lot store will be under the
new ownership of Gaylord-based Freeman
Family Enterprises, owners of 17 other Save-
A-Lot northern Lower Michigan locations
stretching from Midland to the south,
Alpena to the east, Traverse City to the west,
and Cheboygan to the north. They will
assume ownership from current East Jordan
Save-A-Lot owner, Scott Roggenbeck and
plan to give the store some extensive interior
updating while continuing to provide cus-
tomers the same high quality of customer
service and economical grocery pricing they
have come to expect when shopping at Save-
A-Lot.
Scott has done a great job operating the
East Jordan store over the years, states Tim
Freeman, president of Freeman Family
Enterprises. We look for-
ward to serving the customer
base he has established, and
being involved in and sup-
portive of the East Jordan
community. The store will
be managed by Helen
English, who has been the
assistant manager of our
Gaylord store for several
years.
Freeman Family
Enterprises employs approx-
imately 350 people here in Michigan, and
expects to have between 15 and 20 employ-
ees at the East Jordan store. The original
Gaylord Save-A-Lot store was launched in
January of 2000, and the Freemans 18 stores
represent their being the third largest retailer
group among the 1,400 Save-A-Lot stores
nationwide. Their commitment to excel-
lence in customer service can be traced back
to the Freeman familys roots with Glens
Markets. Tim, along with his brothers, Tom
and Paul, were employed with Glens, and
their grandfather, C. Glen Catt founded
Glens Market. Their uncle and father were
both actively involved in the ownership
when that business was sold in June 1999.
Tim Freeman recalls, My father, Denny
Freeman, actually managed the Glens
Market in from 1963 to 1967. Our family and
team of employees understand the grocery
business here in Northern Michigan. We are
the low-price leader for groceries in this
area, and we focus on providing exceptional-
ly fresh produce and meats. Our exclusive
brands of shelf products offer national brand
quality and flavor, with savings that can
reach up to 40% for our customers com-
pared to conventional grocery stores.

as the sponsor. The competition will run Feb. 25 to April 26 and
is open to any type of business or organization. There is no cost
to participate and registration is completed on-line at
www.bcbsm.com/yourhealth. Local businesses are also asked
to alert the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce of their
participation by sending an email to chamber President Carlin
Smith at carlin@petoskey.com.
Businesses and organizations will compete in four different
categories depending on the number of participants on their
team. Winning teams in each category receive prizes from
BCBSM. The local team that loses the biggest percentage of
weight, regardless of category, will receive gift cards from Boyne
Resorts and a free sponsorship at a future Business After Hours.
Smith says this is the sec-
ond year that the Health Care
Task Force has hosted this
competition. He says last year
ten teams competed and the
participants collectively lost
965-pounds. Our goal is to
double the number of partici-
pating teams this year, Smith
said. This is one of those
events where there are no los-
ers, he added.
Organizers urge you to use
the BCBSM web site for more
information or call the
Petoskey Regional Chamber of
Commerce at 231-347-4150.
