LAYOFFS

The University of Cincinnati

Cincinnati, OH
The University of Cincinnati will eliminate 120 jobs on its main campus this year as
part of a $23 million budget cut. About half of positions already are vacant but about
63 employees will be laid off, UC officials said. There are fewer than a dozen cuts of
faculty positions, with the rest administrative and support jobs, said Jim Plummer,
vice president for finance. - The Cincinnati Enquirer

University of Florida
Gainesville, FL
The University of Florida is laying off 11 faculty members and 49 staff members.
University spokeswoman Janine Sikes said the jobs are being eliminated as part of
the university's $42.2 million in budget cuts to address reduced state funding. The
biggest losers are the UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, which is
cutting 20 staff positions and the College of Journalism and Communications, which
is eliminating 17 positions, including 14 at its broadcast stations.

TRENDS

Top Administrators Sent to Teach in Fla.

- The Miami Herald

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida school district that ranks among the
country's largest hopes to save money by sending top administrators into classrooms
to substitute teach.

The plan in Broward County means even the superintendent could be called on, at an
overall annual savings of $200,000. The idea came from a second grade teacher in a
district campaign soliciting cost-saving proposals from employees. It requires that
the 111 district administrators who are certified to teach replace regular substitutes
twice a month.

Neighboring Miami-Dade County, also one of America's 10 largest school districts, is

considering a similar plan — but its administrators wouldn't replace substitutes.
Instead, they could teach or co-instruct classes, give guest lectors, tutor or mentor.
