The Mackam amphoterics are mild surfactants,
stable in both acid and alkaline systems. Their
properties are as follows:
MONO AND DIACETATES
This class is derived from fatty imidazolines.
They are the reaction products of the imidazoline
with one or two moles of sodium chloroacetate:
The amphoterics are extremely mild surfactants
and are widely used in baby shampoos. The
acetates are also stable in strong alkaline
systems and are used as wetting agents in
caustic cleaners.
SALT FREE AMPHOTERICES
This class is similar to the mono and diacetates
except they are salt free propionates. They are
also very mild and stable in highly alkaline
systems and are excellent emulsifiers for aerosol
and emulsion systems.

AMINO PROPIONATES
This class is a true amphoteric since it has
zwitterion properties:
ALKYLAMINOPROPIONIC ACID
They are excellent for mild shampoos and
provide a conditioning effect in acid shampoos.
DIHYDROXYETHYL ALKYL GLYCINATE
This class is unique in that it is stable in both
acid and alkaline media. The reason for this
stability is that there are no ester or amide
groups to hydrolyze:
They are excellent thickeners for strongly
alkaline oven cleaners and acid bowl cleaners.
For hair care, they provide excellent conditioning
for shampoos and conditioners.
SULFOAMPHOTERICS
This class is a sulfonate of a fatty imidazoline.
They are very mild surfactants, have a high
tolerance for inorganic salts and are stable over
a wide pH range. The general structure is as

dimethylamines. They have a variety of
applications from industrial cleaners to personal
care products. Their properties are as follows:
BETAINES
This class of surfactants is actually an inner salt
in which the positive and negative charges are
both present on the molecule at low and high
pH:
SULTAINES
This class is a sulfonate of a fatty amidoamine.
They are inner salts which have a positive and
negative charge at both high and low pH.

The monoester type is primarily used in personal care
because it is very mild to both skin and eyes. They also
reduce the irritation properties of high foaming anionic
surfactants and are low cost compared to other mild
specialty surfactants. Ethoxylation improves mildness
even further and the low irritation properties are unaf-
fected by concentration. Applications are:
The diesters, especially the dioctyl, have a variety of
applications. They are powerful wetting agents and one
of the most effective interfacial tension depressants
commercially available. Applications are:

Mackamide / Alkanolamides
TM
Mackamides are nonionic surfactants made from
the condensation of mono or diethanolamine
and a fatty acid or ester.
They have a wide variety of uses both for
personal care and industrial products.
Mackamides basically function as thickeners,
foam boosters and stabilizers when blended with
anionic surfactants such as lauryl sulfates, ether
sulfates, olefin sulfonates or alkylbenzene
sulfonates.
When back titrated with a fatty acid, they have
many applications for industrial products. Some
applications are: detergent for high-alkaline
heavy-duty cleaners, solubilizer for inorganic
builders, corrosion inhibitors, cutting oil lubri-
cants and chain lubricants.
Monoethanol amides are solic at room tempera-
ture. They are used for solid applications such
as a slow-release detergent block, impregnated
soap pads, pearling agent, or bar soap additive.

Mackine / Amidoamines
TM
The structures are as follows: Mackines are amidoamines which become
cationic surfactants when neutralized. These
salts provide excellent hair conditioning
properties. Mackines are unusual in that they
are compatible with anionic surfactants and will
not depress foam properties of a shampoo.
Mackines are also excellent corrosion inhibitors
and the salts produce emulsifying properties for
acid systems.
They are used primarily as precursors in the
manufacture of betaines, amine oxides,
quaternary ammonium compounds and cationic
surfactants. The salts of the morpholine
derivatives are extremely mild to skin and eyes.
They are excellend conditioners for baby
products and mild hand or facial cleansers.

Mackazoline / Imidazolines
Mackazolines are imidazoline emulsifiers with
the following structure:
In general, the Mackazolines function as oil
soluble emulsifiers producing cationic o/w
emulsions. When neutralized they are excellent
emulsifiers for semipolar or polar solvents as
toluene, pine oil or trichloroethylene.
They can also be quaternized with an alkyl
halide to form stronger cationic characteristics.
The salts are excellent antistatic agents and they
will displace water from metal substrates, thus
becoming a "water displacing solvent".
The Mackazolines are also corrosion inhibitors
for acid bowl cleaners and acid pickling systems.

Mackalene / Cationic Conditioners
TM
Mackalenes are amidoamine salts with the
following structure:
They are excellend conditioners for both skin
and hair care products. The Mackalenes are
unique in that they are compatible with anionic
surfactants and therefore can be used as
conditioners for clear shampoos. Compared to a
quarternary ammonium compound, Mackalenes
do not depress the foam properties of anionic
surfactants. Also the morpholine types are non-
irritating and are recommended for applications
which require extra mildness, such as baby
shampoos and leave-on conditioners.

Mackamine / Amine Oxides
TM
Mackamines are alkyl amine oxides which are
mildly cationic in acid media:
Their major applications in personal care are as
hair conditioners, viscosity builders and foam
boosters. They have an advantage over
alkanolamides in that the amine oxide will not
cause pH drift in acid systems, thus providing
greater stability to formulations.
For highly alkaline heavy duty cleaners,
Mackamines provide excellent detergent and
wetting properties.

Mackerniums are quaternary ammonium
compounds which are fatty or polymer derived.
The fatty type are excellent conditioners,
