Factors affecting CO include preload, afterload, contractility, age, posture, emotions, temperature, disease, exercise, and hormones. Preload refers to the degree to which the myocardium is stretched prior to contraction. Afterload is the resistance against blood being expelled. Contractility is the strength of contraction. Cardiac index normalizes CO to body surface area. Sympathetic activation increases HR, contractility, SV and thus CO. Increased temperature, metabolism, or thyroid hormones also increase CO.
