the signatures of 800 central
delegates required to call for an
extraordinary general meeting
(EGM). The move comes de-
spite party president Datuk Seri
Ong Tee Keat’s call on Monday
for an EGM in what many say is
a pre-emptive strike.
If they succeed in getting the
endorsement of a third of the
2,400 delegates, it will be a re-
peat of the double EGM which
happened during the Datuk Dr

reported yesterday.
Chua’s supporters said they
are worried that Ong’s surprise
decision to call for an EGM,
which they believe is aimed
at cooling the fiery emotions
of the grassroots, would affect
their attempt to get the support
of fence-sitting delegates.
“As such our work to gather
signatures will not stop, nor will
we call off our requisition for
another EGM,” they said.
Sources said they would
also urge delegates who sup-
port Chua to attend the EGM
called by Ong and to vote
against a possible motion to
affirm the presidential coun-
cil’s sacking of the former
health minister.

ing of two EGMs in succes-
sion. Everything will be done
according to the constitution.
I will be fair,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chua hit out
at the party president for call-
ing an EGM just days after
the top leadership said an
EGM would split the party.
“This is his (Ong’s) style, i.e.
he keeps changing his stand
and keeps saying different
things,” Chua, who made his
first public appearance after
his sacking, told his support-
ers in Alor Star on Monday.

Marine police get help to crack

down on human trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal marine
police said yesterday that the
Special Branch and the CID’s anti-
vice, gaming and secret society
(D7) division has been engaged
to assist them in efforts to clamp
down on human trafficking.

being looked into seriously and
the Special Branch and D7 have
been tasked to trace members of
human trafficking syndicates.
He said last week, discussions
were held with Australian police in
working out ways of how Malaysia
could assist them in overcoming
the issue.
He said police will use the
toughest laws available including
preventive laws on human traf-
fickers.
“The only setback we face
is in proving the syndicates are
behind human trafficking. It is
very complex and to do this can
be quite a task. That’s why we
will not hesitate to use preven-
tive laws such as the Emergency
Ordinance,” he said.
Yesterday was also the 62th
anniversary of the marine police
and at a press conference at Bukit
Aman, Isa said the marine police
division has played its role well over
the years in battling crimes at sea.
He said since 2004 marine
police have handled more than
14,000 cases involving a string of
crimes such as smuggling, tres-
passing and piracy.
He said marine police had
also made seizures worth almost
RM100 million over the last five
years.

MACC quizzes businessman

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-
Corruption Commission (MACC)
questioned businessman Lee Wye
Wing for five hours yesterday
in relation to funds allocated for
projects in the Seri Kembangan
constituency.
Lee, manager of construction
company WSK Services which is in-
volved in community programmes,
was questioned at the MACC
headquarters from 12.30pm.
He was accompanied by
lawyers Loi Kwong Fon and Tiew
Way Keng and Seri Kembangan
assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah
who is state executive councillor.
“It was a non-stop session
with a 10-minute break for Lee
to take a light lunch. He was very
cooperative and everything went
smoothly,” Tiew told reporters.
Tiew and Loi were not allowed
in the questioning room but
watched from afar.
Lee, who refused to talk to the
press, has been told to come again
today.
“They (MACC) told him (Lee)
they need to check many files. And
during the questioning today they
checked each and every single
document related to the mesra
rakyat programme which Lee was
involved in in Seri Kembangan,”
Tiew said.
On July 15, Lee gave a state-
ment at the Selangor MACC
office.
Tiew said on July 16, the MACC
seized the central processing unit
of Lee’s computer from his house
in Seremban.

Former deputy IGP seriously

injured in road crash
KAJANG: Former deputy inspec-
tor-general of police Tan Sri Mohd
Sedek Mohd Ali suffered serious
injuries and is in a coma follow-
ing a road accident at Km17
of the Kajang-Cheras highway
yesterday.
According to Kajang police
chief ACP Shakaruddin Che Mood,
the accident took place when
Mohd Sedek who was driving
home to Saujana Impian, Kajang,
alone lost control of his car and
crashed into a road barrier.
He said according to wit-
nesses, Mohd Sedek’s Mercedes
Benz spun several times before
coming to a halt in the middle of
the road.
He said another car driven by
a woman then crashed into the
ex-top police officer’s car.
The woman escaped injuries
but Mohd Sedek, who suffered
head injuries and fractured his
limbs, was rushed to the Kajang
Hospital before being transferred
to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Shakaruddin said that although
Mohd Sedek is in a coma, his
condition is reported to be
stable.
Mohd Sedek retired from the
police force in January 2005.
