appy New Year! Todays editorial page, as is our custom, is a list of the names of those people who wrote letters to the editor and guest columns that were published in the past year. The list of names on these pages represents those who together contributed 1,607 letters and columns. As always, we pledge to keep reading and printing our readers opinions. We are resolved to do better, to be more responsive and to include the views of more writers. We thank everyone who fired up the email, put pen to paper or fed the fax machine. We look forward to keeping the editorial page a true readers page open to all without regard to political affiliation, convention or the popularity of any point of view. Veteran writers know how to get published without having to deal with an editor calling to negotiate about something or other. We usually call to confirm the identity of authors, and we fact-check content as much as possible. We value letters that take strong positions, those that employ humor, those that exemplify concise, clever

A TRIBUTE TO OUR LETTER-WRITERS

writing, and those that hold public officials feet to the fire. We publish most of the letters we receive, close to 90 percent. Letters that dont make the cut usually fall short in one of a few categories. We try to keep the rules to a minimum. Here are the ones we strive to uphold: ^ Length. The limit is 250 words. We also accept guest columns of 500 to 600 words. ^ Phone numbers. Email writers who forget to include phone numbers will receive an email from us asking for these contacts. Otherwise, we seek out a phone listing and try to track down writers as best we can. ^ Anonymity. All letters must appear with writers first and last names, and hometown. ^ Personal letters and thank-yous. Letters to the editor should be of interest to all readers and not speak specifically to another person or group. Generally, letters that are written from one person to another dont qualify. However, we do accept letters that describe

charitable events, those that call out the good works of children and school activities, and those that respond to newsworthy events things that have been covered in the pages of The ExpressTimes. We allow letters on religious topics but draw the line at opinions that 1) proselytize, 2) assert the supremacy of any religion or denigrate others beliefs, or 3) quote chapter and verse at length. We dont print letters from candidates during a campaign season. We make exceptions when a candidate believes his or her views have been misrepresented in a letter, and we give a high priority to letters that respond agree or disagree to the newspapers editorials. We refuse letters that defame others, but we notify a writer if there are legal concerns about an opinion. Actually, very few letters raise this concern. The threshold for libel involving public issues and public officials is still very high in this country. That is something to celebrate today and the rest of the year. Thanks again. Keep writing.
