Arisai, Aridai and +ai&atha, 9: the ten sons of ;aman son of ;ammedatha, the enemy of the Jews. <ut they did not lay their hands on the plunder. )"*+,
The Jews were victorious in the one-day battle. In Susa city, Jews killed 500 men, and the ten sons of Haman. However, the Jews did not lunder and sei!e the assets of their enemies. The Jews killed only their armed enemies and attackers. They did not kill the women and children. "y not lunderin# and sei!in# the assets of their enemies, the survivin# family members of the killed enemies could still survive with their assets untouched. This would brin# lon#-term eace with their enemies. If the Jews also killed the unarmed family members of their attackers, and lundered the assets of their attackers, this would increase the animosity, and the enemies would seek reven#e in near future. $ana#ement conce t% In battle with enemies, do not overkill. In com etition with com etitors, we may aim to win, but do not &kill off& the com etitors. "e merciful.
The number of those killed in the citadel of 1usa was reported to the king that same day. 92 The king said to =ueen >sther, ?The Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men and the ten sons of ;aman in the citadel of 1usa. @hat have they done in the rest of the king$s provincesA "ow what is your petitionA *t will be given you. @hat is your reBuestA *t will also be granted.C 9# ?*f it pleases the king,C >sther answered, ?give the Jews in 1usa permission to carry out this day$s edict tomorrow also, and let ;aman$s ten sons be impaled on poles.C 9' 1o the king commanded that this be done. An edict was issued in 1usa, and they impaled the ten sons of ;aman. 92 The Jews in 1usa came together on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, and they put to death in 1usa three hundred men, but they did not lay their hands on the plunder. )"*+,

%eanwhile, the remainder of the Jews who were in the king$s provinces also assembled to protect themselves and get relief from their enemies. They killed seventy-five thousand of them but did not lay their hands on the plunder. 94 This happened on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and Doy. )"*+,
The Jews in the rovinces were also victorious. Jews in the rovinces killed 25,000 men, but did not lunder the assets of the enemies and attackers. $ordecai must have coordinated with the Jews all over the kin#dom3em ire that the assets of enemies must not be lundered. This was a wise strate#y. 4ivin# the enemy a livin# chance after the battle is im ortant. This would reduce the chance of the enemy seekin# ven#eance. $ana#ement conce t% 5hen we deal with our enemies and com etitors, we need to be reasonable and realistic. 6o not ush them too hard. ,nou#h is enou#h. 5innin# is enou#h. 5e do 78T seek the total destruction of the enemies and com etitors.
97 The Jews in 1usa, however, had assembled on the thirteenth and fourteenth, and then on the fifteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and Doy. 98 That is why rural JewsEthose living in villagesEobserve the fourteenth of the month of Adaras a day of Doy and feasting, a day for giving presents to each other. )"*+,

Purim festival was thus established, to commemorate this victorious event, an event which turned from sorrow to joy, from day of mourning to day of victory celebration. the plot came to the king$s attention, he issued written orders that the evil scheme ;aman had devised against the Jews should come back onto his own head, and that he and his sons should be impaled on poles.23 )Therefore these days were called 5urim, from the word pur., <ecause of everything written in this letter and because of what they had seen and what had happened to them, 24 the Jews took it on themselves to establish the custom that they and their descendants and all who Doin them should without fail observe these two days every year, in the way prescribed and at the time appointed. 27 These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city. And these days of 5urim should never fail to be celebrated by the JewsEnor should the memory of these days die out among their descendants. 28 1o =ueen >sther, daughter of Abihail, along with %ordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm this second letter concerning 5urim. #: And %ordecai sent letters to all the Jews in the 924 provinces of er!es$ kingdomEwords of goodwill and assuranceE #9 to establish these days of 5urim at their designated times, as %ordecai the Jew and =ueen >sther had decreed for them, and as they had established for themselves and their descendants in regard to their times of fasting and lamentation.#2 >sther$s decree confirmed these regulations about 5urim, and it was written down in the records. )"*+, #ordecai wrote the first letter concerning the Purim to be celebrated annually. $ueen %sther and #ordecai wrote the second letter in full authority to double confirm the Purim celebration. !hese letters were sent to all &'( provinces. #ordecai was powerful and influential. $ueen %sther was also powerful, maybe even more powerful. )ecause in the 'nd letter, it was signed by both $ueen %sther and #ordecai. *ith ' very powerful +ews in the "ingdom, the +ews had finally found ease living in this new land of captivity.
