Concept: Below are some of the most recent developments related to reproductive health in our society. Your job will be to provide an analysis of these developments. As we discussed in the beginning of the unit sex ed is a values driven topic. These issues are inherently controversial themselves because although there are facts that may help you understand them; ultimately you see these facts through the prism of your own perception (values, morals, upbringing, etc.)! The sources listed are just a starting point, remember that any information may be biased and it is your job as an educated consumer to carefully analyze information for validity, reliability, and bias. Goal: Provide an analysis of the recent developments in reproductive health demonstrating an understanding of content specific information necessary to understand each issue (ie. What strains are protected against in the HPV vaccine, approved locations for the Safe Haven law). Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

A vaccine used to prevent diseases that may cause cancer due to skin to skin sexual activity.

It does a both promotes promiscuity, but it should be used to help out the greater good.

Level 5/Extra Credit/Going Beyond: Define Herd Immunity and explain how it applies to the debate. Herd immunity: general immunity to a pathogen in a population based on the acquired immunity to it by a high proportion of members over time. It can

say that if enough people get the vaccine over time eventually the disease will be powerless.

Topic 2: Emergency Contraception (Plan B)

Basic Overview: Helps prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after having un protected sex.

Intended Use (Why people use it): People use it so they do not become pregnant.

How close to failed / no contraceptives: (Time Frame?) IT works best if used 72 hours after intercourse, but it still has a chance up to 5 days after.

Do You Need a Prescription?: There is no prescription needed Mechanism of action-how it works:

Cost: Varies from $30-$60

ECPs work by delaying ovulation (the release of an egg during a girl's monthly cycle). If fertilization and implantation have already happened, levonorgestrel won't interrupt the pregnancy.

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not wanting to get pregnant?

It does make some people unaccountable for their choices, but it also does prevent those people who dont want to be parents a way out.

In your opinion do these statistics warrant public educations involvement? What does a schools condom availability program look like? Who gets condoms, where, when and how?

So the big question is how would condom availability affect the student body? Does it promote unhealthy behavior or are you providing a healthy outlet for those that will do it anywaysif so is it even a schools place to get involved?

Topic 4: The Safe Haven Law

Basic Overview: A law that allows parents to leave infants at designated private persons, without going to jail, while giving up the rights to the child.

Time Frame: It was allowed to be done for anyone under the age of 18, but after much controversy it is now only allowed for infants 30 days or younger.

Approved Locations? Police stations, hospitals, rescue squads, and fire houses are all places where it is approved to drop of the infants.

What happens to parental rights? The parent has 60 days to return for the child if they do not they have officially given up their parental rights which puts the child up for adoption. What is Illinois Law exactly?

Illinois allows the unharmed newborn to be brought to the approved locations without any legal issues of abandonment brought up. Level 5: How do state laws vary on this?

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not able to provide for a child? If the parent knows that they are giving the child a better situation than the one they are providing for the child then it is a good law.

Some states make the parents of the children to go to court for the child others the child can just be left. Some sates allow children older than 30 days to be dropped off.
