School District Study Report: Variables Influencing Student Achievement

ABSTRACT
Research indicates that the ideal setting to provide for academic achievement would be
for students to attend schools in a K-8 and 9-12 setting. This recommendation was made
in order to keep transitions to a minimum. Schools should be geographically located in a
neighborhood setting and should be economically and ethnically diverse. The schools
should house no more than 400 students at the elementary level and no more than 600 at
the high school level. By keeping schools in the neighborhood, small in size, and diverse
you will increase the chances of poor and minority students being successful and will
encourage more parental support and more parental involvement in the schools.
Professional development should be focused on specific age level spans, ie., middle
school, and should be ongoing. While it may be more economical to provide professional
development in buildings with narrow grade spans, it may be counterproductive to
raising student achievement when those students are placed in a different educational
setting. The debate as to renovation versus new construction has no simple answer. Each
building, location, and potential grade level configuration will need to be evaluated on an
individual basis.
