Y'all mean a lot to me. Thank you for putting all that you can into this club. I recognize that everyone here is trying there very best to improve our club and serve the community, and that means so to me. Thank you for your passion. I don't know where I would be if y'all were boring/unmotivated/apathetic about Key Club. Your passion drives me to make this year the very best for the Cy-Falls Key Club. It's a new year so I just wanted to let yall know about what we have coming up! Our first meeting back from the break is going to be on January 15 th . I hope I get to see all of your happy, smiling faces because I have a lot of great events for yall this next semester. Its going to be the best semester ever, filled with great opportunities to serve our community, and thats one of the best things ever. Also this semester, we have DCON. DCON is literally the most wonderful time of the year. Its an unforgettable weekend, full of fun activities and excitement everywhere you go. You as a Key Clubber get to miss two days of school and stay at a really awesome hotel in Dallas AND get to meet Key Clubbers who are as awesome as you from all over the state of Texas AND Oklahoma. Its basically like your birthday, New Years Eve, and Thanksgiving wrapped up into one weekend. You wont want to miss it. Finally, we have the perpetually fantastic K2 Parents Night out on January 18 th from 5:30-8:45. Like always, its going to be so much fun, and I encourage everyone to go. When I graduate high school and move on into the world, I won't remember much about sophomore year except that I got to work with a wonderful group of people with the common goal of improving our community. Key Club has made all the difference for me; I hope it has for you. I cant wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for this club. See yall on the 15 th !
Yours in Service,
Amy Jiang
Cypress Falls Key Club 3 ELIMINATING MNT is SNOW joke! This holiday season was full of Christmas carols, candy canes, and most important, PANCAKES! The main goal and theme this year for Key Club is the Eliminate Project, where we try to raise money to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. The past year of 2013, we have done UNICEF where many have raise quite a bit of money for the project during the Halloween season. It really is amazing to know that extra coins that lie around can add up to so much! But, the main event we have to raise money is the Eliminate Pancake Breakfast. The Eliminate Pancake Breakfast was hosted during December in a gracious Applebees near Cypress Falls High School. Many of the key clubbers willing got in line to sell the tickets. It was common to see a key clubber sell their ticket to their parents, teachers, and fellow students because the tickets were ten dollars each. Some of the key clubbers even bought a ticket for themselves to attend! It was really a team effort to sell the tickets though, because times are hard, but the money did go to a better cause, and thats what makes everything worth it. On the day of the breakfast, many woke up at the crack of dawn to go help set up the event at Applebees. They wiped down the tables and prepared themselves to be waiters and servers for the guests. As the place began to fill with people, everyone volunteering found themselves busy at work. Orders were taken, food was served, guests were greeted, and everyone enjoyed themselves. Around the midway mark of the event, the Key Clubbers prepared a special surprise performance for everyone. They made a cha cha line and sang a song for everyone to get in the spirit. The thing that made the highlight was the president, Amy, going around to every table thanking everyone for buying the ticket and explaining the Eliminate Project. Overall, the Eliminate Pancake Breakfast by CyFalls was a huge success and ended the year on a good note to reaching the goal of the Eliminate Projct. If everyone contributes just a little, together we can all eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus and help make the world a better place. ELIMINATING Pancakes? By Annie Phan, Historian Applebees: it was more lively than usual this Saturday morning. There were families together, eating pancakes and breakfast at a place minutes away from home. What was even more out of the ordinary was the amount of high schoolers there. This might have been what the average Applebees-goer might have observed. However, they werent there to eatthey were serving food! With Santa hats and reindeer headbands, Key Clubbers waited on each family with a smile as they gave them their breakfast. As I took my family over to Applebees to support them (by eating a great breakfast), my 14-year-old brother asked, Why are we spending $40 to eat pancakes? Not just pancakes, silly Padawan. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, and fruits galore! (Hashtag, worth it) I responded back with my usual grin. Its for a good cause. These 40 dollars should be put to the best use possible. And what better use than to save a life? However, saving a life is still a bit of an understatement. A closer estimate is more like saving anywhere from 40 to 100 lives. How, you ask? ELIMINATE, thats how. Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT), a disease that plagues many in third-world countries. I bet youve never heard of it. Thats because for the most part, MNT has been eliminated from most developed nations through medical advances and vaccinations. But heres the real question: if we have these vaccinations, why havent we been doing anything to eliminate it from the rest of the earth? A question like this was probably asked by Kiwanis and UNICEF years ago, because both organizations jointly launched ELIMINATE: a huge service project with the goal of eliminating MNT from the rest of the earth and Key Club is giving their all to see this vision realized. This project was created to answer and solve the previous question. We havent been able to do this earlier because of one thing: the cost. On a massive scale, it would be huge (I dont know the exact amount)! However, there is a great deal of people in just the US. How much would it add up to if each person donated just $10? $10 to eat pancakes, $10 to bring a smile to a family. $10 to save about 15 lives, or even more! So whats $10 to us? A meal at Chipotle? A Starbucks gift card? How about we make the most of what we have? How about we use $10 for something of far greater value? How about we use $10 to save a family? Now that would be a good Christmas gift.
