My Dear People:
Of all the many writings of St. Augustine, my
favorite one liner is: LORD, OUR HEARTS
WERE MADE FOR YOU AND THEY WILL
NEVER REST UNTIL THEY REST IN YOU.
It took Augustine thirty-three years finally to
come to this simple but profound conclusion.
Everyone on this earth has frustrations. It
makes no difference how much money,
popularity, or power these are still
frustrations. Even the President of the great
country has his frustrations. It is pure and
simple, God would not dare give us heaven
on this earth; He is saving it for the next life.
There is a great opportunity for our teens the
weekend of the 9th of October, when St.
Peter’s and OLS Youth ministers are
planning a retreat in a perfect near-by
setting, Hargis Retreat. I loved Chelsea
Piper’s explanation of the theme the Friday
night as it starts; Empting oneself of all the
earthly detachments, pick them out one at a
time, get rid of them for the weekend, make
extra room for Jesus as he comes to the
youth in the Eucharist, the scriptures and
through a motivational speaker and mutual
discussions. We plan to have a priest there
Saturday and Sunday. There is no feeling as
great as coming back from a successful
retreat. Our Youth Minister, Chelsea will
continue the advertisement and
encouragement for our youth. I am so
pleased that the plans are being made.
Parish and parents need to give our youth all
the encouragement to see life in the proper
perspective. Our hearts are made for God
and they will never rest except in Him.
What Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary
Alaquoe in the 17th century never ceases to
haunt me. With a visible image of His heart
seen by her: pointing to His heart Jesus said
to her: Behold the heart that has loved so
loved me and is so little love in return.
so far to return some love to Jesus. The
participation at daily Mass at OLS is, again, a
great attempt to return some love to Jesus.
He did ask for something special on the First
Friday of the month. So, at OLS, we have
the most beautiful set of prayers with
benediction at 6:00 a.m. till the 6:30 Mass.
The 6:30 Mass is greatly attended on that
day, but I have failed to remind us of that
great devotion the half hour before. The
prayers are a combination of reflections of
the sorrowful mysteries and devotion to
Divine Mercy. Life is slipping away from all of
us and devotion on the First Friday will go
along way for us on the Day of Judgment.
I am reminded of our earthly mortality
whenever I pass the columbarium. I did not
pay for my niche; the committee of three
decided to give me a niche. As of today 133
niches have been purchased; there are 83
still available at the bargain price of
$2000.00. As the number of niches available
lesson, the committee plans to increase the
price. What a meditation to know that the
resting place of our earthly remains has been
firmly established.
There is happiness on this earth, which God
allows to the extent that we are a giving and
unselfish person. Jesus said it: There is
more happiness in giving than receiving.
This is the paradox of all time. St. Augustine
only rephrased it: Lord, our hearts were
made for you and they will never rest until
they rest in you!

 High School youth group meets Sunday
nights from 7:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. We
start in the parish hall for dinner and then
move to the FLC youth rooms for
teaching, prayer, discussion and fun. All
high school youth are welcome. This
week’s topic is “TRI.”
 Sunday morning PSR class for high
school students resumes this Sunday
morning in the FLC youth rooms from
10:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.
10:30 a.m. in the Sodality Room of the Family
Life Center. Please remember to bring canned
goods, toiletries and magazines.
Altar Sodality Joint Meeting-The sodality is
planning a joint meeting for all guilds on
September 25. Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m.
followed by a program and complimentary lunch
in the parish hall. Fr. Jaya Reddy will be the
speaker. Members should make a reservation
for lunch with their guild representative by
September 18. Guests attending the program
may contact Patty Echols at 822-4043 for a
reservation.
OLS Adult Education: Fortify Faith Series-
Join us this Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Parish
Hall. Our speaker will be Marc James Ayers and
his topic is “Jesus Christ in History. Next Sunday,
September 20, our speaker will be Tommy James
and his topic will be “Jesus Christ in the
Economy.”
Children’s Liturgy of the Word begins
Sunday, September 20, 2009 at the 8:30
a.m. Mass. All children in grades K-6 including
those in the Parish School of Religion and those
attending Our Lady of Sorrows School are invited
to attend these liturgies, which have been
especially prepared for them. We will gather in
the main sanctuary for the Introductory Rites and
be dismissed from there to process to the Parish
Hall together. Older siblings and all members of
the family are welcome to celebrate the Lord’s
Word with us. There are a number of ministries
available to the children within Children’s Liturgy
of the Word, including Cantors, Lectors, and
Actors & Actresses for special homilies. All
interested children are encouraged to sign up for
these ministries at the 8:30 a.m. masses on the
Sundays prior to our September 20th start date.

 Starting this Wednesday night, all

interested high school students are invited
to bible study in the youth room, from
7:15 p.m. until 8:15 p.m., we will be
learning about and praying with the
Scriptures.

Our Lady of Grace Altar Guild will have its PRAY FOR VOCATIONS
monthly meeting on Monday, September 14, at

rich in compassion. Are you following in Jesus’
footsteps? Pray for the grace to forgive. (Psalm
103). For those who suffer from a hardened heart,
may they be touched by the gift of mercy and
compassion.

OLS Children’s Music Concert-will be held
on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.
and on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.
in the Parish Hall. The Young Musicians would
like to share with you their talents and try to raise
money for Poor Orphans in Honduras. You will
be able to hear hymnal and classical/ Bach,
Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss and more
music. Admissions-any donation. Please come
and support young musicians and poor orphans.
ALTAR SERVER TRAINING
A training class will be held for students in the 4th
grade or above who have an interest in becoming
a new altar server. Those interested in being an
altar server should attend a training class in the
church at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday,, September 15.
Future altar servers need to attend only one of
the training classes.
Bible Study
Our Lady of Sorrows will begin its annual Bible
study on Wednesday, September 23, meeting at
7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall of the Family Life
Center. This year we will study the Gospel of
Matthew, using materials written by Scott Hahn
and Mark Shea. For more information, please

OLS Annulment Education and Support
would like to invite everyone interested in
learning more about the Declaration of Nullity,
commonly known as Annulments, to join us on
Sunday, September 27, at 11:30 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. in room 102 of the Family Life Center for
Annulment Education. This event is open to
everyone to learn more about the Declaration of
Nullity. If you are a divorced Catholic, know a
divorced Catholic or just want to learn more
about what the Church teaches about
Annulments, we encourage you to join us and
learn more about the Declaration of Nullity. Anne
Marie Verchot, RCIA Director at Our Lady of
Sorrows and a Diocesan Trained Advocate will be
leading the meeting. Snacks and drinks will be

Morning Ultreya-As part of the Birmingham
Diocesan Cursillo Movement, a Morning Ultreya
has been formed for Cursillistas who find this
time more convenient. The Morning Ultreya,
which now meets the third Friday of each month,
will take place on Friday, September 18, at St.
Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, room 213,
after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. The regular agenda
will be followed with group sharing and a witness

babies who are in danger of being aborted and
their mothers, for the end of all abortions, for the

MISSING-We are missing nine round tables in

the Family Life Center. We have loaned them to
our parishioners but there is a liability of people
forgetting to return them. If you have borrowed a
table from the Family Life Center and forgot to
return it please do so as soon as possible.
