PHYS 3416

Electrodynamics Homework #7 Released: 11/22/13, Due: 12/02/13 3.302/296/9.71. Two vertical bars are connected at the bottom via the resistance R=2 Ohm and at the top via the battery with emf 1 V and internal resistance r=2 Ohm. A sliding bar AB can move up or down (no friction), its length l=10 cm, mass m=10 g. The system is placed in the uniform magnetic field B=1T, directed perpendicular to the plane of the picture toward the reader. Find the terminal velocity of the bar in the gravity field.

2. A toroidal coil has a rectangular cross-section, with inner radius a, outer radius a+w, and height h. It carries a total of N tightly wound turns, and the current is increasing at a constant rate (dI/dt=k). If w and h are both much less than a, find the electric at a point z, above the center of the toroid. (Hint: exploit the analogy between Faraday fields and magnetostatic fields and refer to Example 5.6 in the book) 3. Small compass needle (magnetized iron piece) is placed inside the long, narrow solenoid that has n number of turns per unit length in its coils. Axis of the solenoid is horizontal; needle is able to rotate around the pin that is perpendicular to the solenoids axis. Solenoid has magnetic field B0. Initially the needle is stationary, horizontal and tilted from the solenoids axis by small angle . The needle is released. Find the amplitude and frequency of the variable induced emf that originates between the ends of the solenoid. Needle has magnetic moment and moment of inertia J.

4. Compute the self-inductance of the hairpin loop shown on the figure. (Neglect the contribution from the ends; most of the flux comes from the long-straight sections) Length of the loop is l, thickness d. You will run into a snug that is characteristic of many self-inductance calculations. To get a definite answer, assume the wire has a tiny radius , and ignore the flux through the wire itself. 5. Small ball of mass m=1 g and charge q=0.33 nC is placed on the horizontal plane which resides within a solenoid. The ball can move without friction on the plane, axis of the solenoid is vertical. Initially there was no current in the solenoids coils. Then the current was turned on and a constant magnetic field B=0.01 T was established so quickly that the ball did not appreciably move during this increase. Find the radius of the circular orbit of the ball after the Bfield has been established and period of circulation if initially the ball was situated a distance R from the solenoids axis. After you get a numerical answer, analyze whether or not it is possible to do such an experiment with macroscopic particles.

Magnetic material with magnetic permeability r ( r>>1) is made into the toroidal shape with the narrow gap between the poles. Average diameter of the S ). Wire coil toroid is d, cross-sectional area S, gap width b, (d>>b and d with number of loops N that is carrying electrical current is wound around the circumference of the toroid. Disregard fringing of the magnetic field in the gap. Find a) the ratio Wg/Wm of the magnetic energy Wg in the gap to the magnetic energy Wm in the magnetic b) self-inductance L of the toroid.
