Amouthulceristhelossorerosionofpartofthedelicatetissuethatlinestheinsideofthemouth (mucousmembrane).Someofthecausesincludecertaindrugs,chemicalsandinfectiousdiseases suchasherpesorthrush.Themostcommoncauseismechanicalinjury,suchasaccidentallybiting yourcheek.Inmostcases,mouthulcersareharmlessandresolvebythemselvesinafewdays withouttheneedformedicaltreatment.Aphthousulcersarerecurringulcerswithnoknowncause thataffectaround20percentofthepopulation.Seeyourdoctorifyourmouthulcersdontclear upwithinafewdays,orifyouaretroubledbyfrequentattacks. Reactiontocertaindrugs,suchaschemotherapeuticagents. Autoimmunediseases(forexample,lichenplanus). Syphilisinfection. Arangeofotherinfectionsincludinghand-foot-mouthsyndrome. Certaindiseasesincludingtuberculosis,AIDS,diabetesmellitusandinflammatorybowel disease. Cancerofthelip.

Brushyourteethverygently,takingcarenottoslipwiththebrush. Eatawellbalancedandnutritiousdiet. Makesurethatunderlyingconditions,suchasdiabetesmellitusandinflammatorybowel disease,aremanagedappropriately.
