There has been what seems like an
increased number of reported cases of
the u this year, which has seen people
scrambling to get u shots. Chief Medi-
cal Ofcer of Health for Alberta Health
Services Dr. James Talbot said what they
are seeing is H1N1. It is not a pandemic,
but is a recurring strain. Almost all of the
inuenza seen in the province this year
is H1N1.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) does not
do a community-by-community break-
down, but could conrm that in the Cal-
gary Zone, which includes Strathmore,
there have been 357 lab-conrmed cases
of inuenza since Jan. 1.
H1N1 is one of the inuenza strains
which the vaccine protects against. From
2010 forward, the annual vaccine has
provided protection against H1N1 among
other strains of inuenza. Vaccination is
the best way for people to protect them-
selves and their families from inuenza,
said an AHS public health representative.
People still need to use common
sense for those who havent been im-
munized. Hand washing is still a good
idea, not blowing your nose and carry-
ing the Kleenex around. One of the more
important ones is if you are feeling ill
or someone in the family is dont go to
work, dont go to family events where
you could pass it on to somebody else,
said Dr. Talbot.
He recommends checking with your
pharmacy to make sure they have the
vaccine since many pharmacies have
run out and are waiting for more. In the
meantime there are a couple of options
for people in Strathmore. Flu shots are
being offered by appointment only at the
Strathmore Health Unit from 8:30 a.m. to
4 p.m. ve days a week until March. Call
403-361-7200 to book an appointment.
There will also be a u clinic at the
hospital on Jan. 10. The clinic will be
based on a rst-come-rst-served drop-
in basis from 11:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
The shot is free for all Albertans and all
you need to bring is your Alberta Health
Card.

A Strathmore couple has the con-
tender for the rst baby of the New
Year. Audrey Rachelle Gillies burst into
the world at 6:55 a.m. on Jan. 1 on the
way to the delivery ward at the Peter
Lougheed Centre (PLC). Parents Kirstyn
Hogan and Anthony Gillies werent ex-
pecting their rst-born child to come so
soon.
I wasnt expecting it though because
she wasnt due until the 13 of January,
said Hogan.
It was a harrowing experience actu-
ally, said Tracy Hogan, Kirstys mom.
We ended up at the Strathmore hos-
pital who put her (Kirsty) in an ambu-
lance and she (Audrey) was just about
born on the highway.
Tracy said the ambulance driver con-
sidered stopping on the side of the
highway for the delivery but then deter-
mined they could make it to the hospi-
tal, which they did, barely. Audrey was
born just as she reached the third oor
of the PLC, weighing in at 7lbs 6oz.
I realized how much stuff I still
needed because I thought I still had two
weeks, said Hogan.
Im tired and just trying to get the
hang of things.

Being a parent, whether its your rst
kid or your third is always tough. You
need to get into a schedule and routine,
you have a million questions and some-
times you just want someone to talk to
that knows what you are going through.
Strathmores Hand in Hand Parent
Link Centre, a department of the Aspen
Family and Community Network Society
understands and is here to help.
We have supports for every family,
every parent because parenting is not
easy. Parent Links are pretty much the
closest you will get to a parenting manu-
al. We will help parents nd supports re-
garding the parenting issues even if we
dont have them (the supports) here,
said Rhonda Rhys-Doering, senior par-
ent coach at Parent Link.
The goal for Parent Link is to connect
families of children ages 0 to six with
support and resources to a number of
different organizations. There are also
brochures and books that parents, or
caregivers, can have the opportunity to
go through.
We help parents with any parenting
challenge, even with kids that are older
than six, said Rhys-Doering.
There are a number of programs run
at the centre, all of which are free. On
an ongoing basis Baby Talk is offered,
with a different theme each week. There
are also drop-in play times, which are a
great way for parents and caregivers to
get out of the house and socialize.
Some of the programs offered do re-
quire registration, like the Ready Set
Grow! group, which offers a playtime,
Helping new parents
an activity, an art experience followed
by circle time.
For preschoolers its a good way to
have their rst experiences with struc-
tured programs and following instruc-
tions because we are absolutely okay
with them leaving the circle or getting
used to following instructions and just
focusing on play, said Rhys-Doering.
Parent Link is there to help every par-
ent no matter his or her needs or nan-
cial situation. Its for every single mom,
dad or caregiver out there who would
like to take part in the program.
It is absolutely fantastic for network-
ing with parents with kids of the same
age. We have made a good group of little
friends through here, theres about four
or ve of us that hang out from here on
a regular basis, said Lindsay Crook.
It is a fun and interactive morning
out, said Heather Marston.
Its nice to have somebody that un-
derstands, I think thats a big thing, said
Kristina Mitchell.
Having the opportunity to meet with
other parents with kids close to the
same age has been something all three
of the women have enjoyed about at-
tending Parent Link programs.
Parent Link rst ofcially came to
Strathmore in 2008, based in the Coun-
try Lane Mall before moving to their cur-
rent location 421 2nd Ave. Parent Link
is not a babysitting facility, parents or
caregivers must attend the programs
with their child. Program times and in-
formation can be found on the Town of
Strathmore websites events calendar at
www.strathmore.ca.

Strathmore High School (SHS) dance students will perform
Ghosts of What Became, Jan. 16-18. This original dance show
is based on the music album by the same title, produced by
Rosebud folk duo, Me and the Mrs.
Paul Zacharias, who comprises Me and the Mrs. with his
wife Heather Pattengale, composed the music on Ghosts of
What Became. He describes their music as folk in style, very
melodic and acoustic, with an emphasis on vocal harmony.
The songs are all very story-based, he says. Theyre all
about this ght to live a life that is worthwhile and is rich,
full of meaning.
For the show, Me and the Mrs. will perform with a full
band, including SHS students and staff members.
In some ways were outdoing the album, Zacharias says.
Were doing a lot of it the same but were actually adding
some stuff that isnt even on the album version.
Zacharias says Deanne Bertsch, SHS dance and drama
teacher, and Paul Sonsteby, SHS English literature teacher,
have supported the students in extrapolating things from
my song lyrics and the themes of the stories ... in the songs,
Zacharias says. But the students are the ones imagining and
creating the story.
The groups (of students) get assigned a song and they
get to choreograph a dance, Zacharias says. Theyve taken
the album as sort of a story or a story arc, and from that,
they each individually come up with their concert and their
choreography.
Zacharias says Bertsch and Sonsteby are skilled at nurtur-
ing students courage and creativity. For example, instead of
(Bertsch) saying, Okay kids, this is the choreography. This is
the story, shell ask, what inspires you about these songs or
about these lyrics? And what story do you want to tell from
this?
And Zacharias is awed by what the students have done
with his own music.
Theres just so much talent, so much raw, natural talent
(in SHS students), he says. I sometimes sit back and just
want to have the kids do it. I want to go and hide in the
shadows because theyre just so talented.
There are some really gorgeous moments in the show that
kind of sneak up on me. All of a sudden, it just chokes me
right up, and I wont be able to sing a few words in a line,
because these kids, they just come up with such beautiful
storytelling.
Ghosts of What Became will be performed at 7 p.m., Jan.
16-18, in the Strathmore High School Theatre. Tickets are
$10 and available at the door. To hear the music of Me and
the Mrs., and to keep up with upcoming performances, go

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Fear is an emotion we all experience from time to
time, and we all handle it differently. Theres sup-
posed to be some Fight or Flight theory that dic-
tates what response people choose in a terrifying
situation. Thats true unless youre the Fules hedge-
hog. He still snorts, puffs up his quills, and poops
when hes scared! Just when I think hes getting
used to me, he panics. Actually, my biggest mistake
was starting to like him, because now Im the guy
who drives to places to get his favorite mealworms.
They cant be just regular mealworms oh no,
they have to be giant mealworms! Actually, theyre
not that big, but to him, I guess theyre like a wrig-
gling t-bone steak. He stretches as far as possible to
reach my hand, and hes even lost his balance and
tipped over, grabbing one!
Im actually typing this in complete darkness in
our downstairs family room. Im at the computer in
complete darkness for a few reasons. Reason No. 1
is that I just nished about 20 minutes of playing
Walking Dead: Survival Instinct on PS3. Im too
afraid to go anywhere past my computer, so Im
hoping that being busy, will help me calm down. If
youve never watched the TV show, its about survi-
vors of a virus where dead people come back to life
as zombies. They also want to devour live people!
You can only totally kill them if theyre hit/shot in
the head. Needless to say, in the game Ive had the
crap scared out of me regularly! My trusty dog Bro-
die has been beside me for the whole game, as Ive
been trying to survive, and kill zombies! He hasnt
been much help though, as hes snored through all
my terror!
The second reason for the darkness is that Ive
just nished feeding the hedgehog some live meal-
worms. Im hoping that now that hes chowed
down, I dont have to dig in the bag for more of
his snacks. It really is a bit gross, so Im basically
hiding from him. Sonic has gone from a complete
hermit to a little spiked rodent, who comes out of
his house whenever he hears our voices. I guess
to him, its like when we hear an ice cream truck!
He appears to have lost me from across the room,
and I sorry, my 25 year old son decided to sneak
up behind me as he made a horrible zombie snarl!
I just about jumped out of the chair! In fact, my
bladder may have just emptied a bit! Anyway, the
hedgehog has given up on his mealworms, and I
have safely stowed them in an old margarine con-
tainer with a lid what could possibly go wrong?
Actually, that brings me to my third reason for ly-
ing low in a darkened basement. A couple of days
ago, just before company arrived, I thought Id be a
considerate husband and tidy our laundry room. I
even put away two mealworm bags up in the cup-
board. Now in my defense, I did not know that one
of the bags had a tear in it! In 28 years of blissful
marriage, I did not know Debbie could hit such
high notes! She did not yell, cry, or scream out my
name it was more of a siren-like wail it scared
me! I raced as fast as I could (no jokes here) to try
and save the damsel in distress.
She had leaped back from the laundry cupboard
as wriggling mealworms dropped down onto the
counter, and some into the sink!
Worms, there are worms everywhere, where are
they coming from? she shrieked.
There must be a tear in the bag here, Ive
scooped up all of them, I said trying to downplay
things.
Deb pointed back at the cupboard, and gasped:
there are more ... get them!
I proceeded to pull out all the cleaning supplies,
and magically she was right, there were more of
them! How did so many worms get out so fast?
I calmly said, huh, its a good thing it was you
and not Breanne who opened the door shes ter-
ried of worms!
Deb did not really look like she cared about Bree
at this time. She did look like she wanted to harm
me, though! And thats where my idea for the old
margarine container and lid came from. You see,
any disaster can have a silver lining live and
learn, I say. Actually, I think its safer to whisper
that old saying from down here for a few days!
(Fule for Thought is a slice of life humour-
ous column that appears in the Strathmore Times,

We assisted the Carseland and District Com-
munity Association and Agricultural Association
with the purchase and installation of a public ad-
dress audio system, door prizes, as well as provid-
ing funds for them to lease a meeting room.
We have given back to worthy causes such as
the Lions Quest (youth leadership), Lions guide
dog foundation and their eye bank projects.
We have invested in our youth, by helping
with startup costs of the Busy Bee Preschool and
equipping them educational toys. The Carseland
school and council has benetted from our pur-
chase of two iPads for special needs students, and
a food preparation cart for their hot lunch pro-
gram.
We assist local youth who attend Crowther
Memorial when they travel to eastern Canada.
Other benefactors in Carseland are the youth
group, and 1st Carseland Baden Powell scout
group as well as Project Hope.
This summer at the Aggie Days Barbeque,
you helped us raise funds for local ood relief.
$2,000 went to help our Lion neighbors, upstream
in the foothills district to feed displaced residents.
$4,000 to assist the Global legacy fund, who as-
sisted with clean up for residents of the Wynd-
ham area. A small donation was given to every
local family directly affected by ood waters.
We concluded the year with a donation of
200 canned hams to the Strathmore and District
Christmas hamper society.
Your generosity has helped us assist the com-
munity, utilizing over $27,000 in donations in
2013.
We, the Carseland Lions Club, would like to
take this time to express our gratitude and ap-
preciation to everyone in the Community who
helped to make all of the above possible and, we
look forward to continuing to serve our commu-
nity in 2014.

The Town of Strathmore has been working on
a new Municipal Development Plan (MDP) that
should help guide Strathmores growth for years
to come.
The MDP is being presented to the public dur-
ing on open house on Jan. 14 from 6 p.m. to 9
p.m. at the Civic Centre. There will be stations set
up where people can talk with the planners and
engineers. There will also be a questionnaire that
will be done in a passport form.
Every time you go to one of the stations and
you ask a question you get your passport stamped.
If you get all ve stamps on your passport when
you submit it then youre entered in to a draw,
said Patricia Maloney, a planner with the Town of
Strathmore.
There are six gift bag prizes lled with passes to
the Aquatic Centre, Family Centre and much more.
The new MDP is being created to update the
old one, add in lands that were annexed in 2011
and deal with some of the issues not previously
addressed.
For example school sites are a big issue in
Strathmore and we need to clearly identify where
future school sites are going to be, said Maloney.
What has happened in the past is there have
been school site dedicated, but we need to make
sure in these new developments that the devel-
oper dedicates school sites.
The sites are provided through the municipal-
ity either through reserve dedication or through
purchasing school sites. Maloney said one of the
exciting things they are looking at is the fact that
the Town of Strathmore does own lands south of
the highway.
The land could be a great spot to have a dual
high school site, something for both the public
and Catholic schools, and then combining that
with a major recreational development. The town
is in discussion with a group out of Vancouver
called Planet Ice, who builds hockey arenas and
indoor soccer elds in the lower mainland of B.C.
If built adjacent to the high schools, it will also
allow the schools to make use of the recreation
facilities.
There has been discussion with Planet Ice about
the possibility of leasing the land and having them
build a facility.
Another issue addressed in the MDP is increased
density.
Before the Town of Strathmore really didnt
have a density for residential development, but as
part of the Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP) we
need to deal with density, said Maloney.
The CRP wants Strathmore to try an achieve
eight to 10 units per acre. This will result in Strath-
more seeing smaller lots and multi-lot develop-
ment. That has been happening over the past few
years, with developers applying and asking to go
to a 32-foot lot.
A lot of people do get upset about that, but at
the same time it allows somebody to have a single
family house cheaper because it is a smaller lot,
said Maloney.
Having smaller property lots does not decrease
the value of surrounding homes, and the MDP is
not suggesting all homes be smaller lot sizes. It is
recommending making the lots a variety of sizes.
Strathmore is fortunate that there is a lot of
residential downtown, something that is not seen
in many smaller communities. Maloney said the
hope is that the downtown policies encourage
more residential downtown, which will hopefully
help revitalize the area.
The more residential, the more people down-
town. The more people that want to use the
downtown 24 hours a day the more businesses
will open and it will become more vital down-
town, said Maloney.
The MDP also mentions allowing secondary
suites throughout most of the residential districts.
Maloney said that is where a lot of controversy
will come in, because people will say they dont
want secondary suite because there will be too
much trafc, parking issues and other concerns.
One of the things were trying to ensure is the
secondary suites are developed properly, said
Maloney.
Were not just talking about somebody just
renting out their basement, were talking about
a secondary suite thats registered, meets the re
codes and they have an additional parking spot
onsite for those people.
Secondary suites help homeowners with their
mortgage and it generally provides more afford-
able housing options to people.
Affordable housing is an issue in Strathmore
oddly enough. Rental housing is quite expensive,
said Maloney.
According to Maloney she found a two bed-
room condo was renting for $1,600 a month and a
three bedroom half duplex was renting for $1,750,
which are higher than some Calgary prices. Af-
fordable housing is going to continue to be an
issue in Strathmore.
Were really trying to be conscious of having
a town where anybody could come and live and
work there, said Maloney.
It may not always be possible to convert an ex-
isting house to have a secondary suite, but when
houses are being built the town is trying to make
sure they are done with higher roofs and larger
windows in the basement, so they can be convert-
ed in the future. The main thing with a secondary
suite is making sure it meets re codes and build-
ing codes.
There have been a number of Area Structure
Plans brought forward for a large portion of the
annexed lands but there are still 10 quarter sec-
tions of land that dont have long range planning
done on them. The MDP will outline what those
future uses will be for those areas and then the
developers can come in and do their plans accord-
ingly.
We do really need to have peoples comments
on this. This is their town and we want them to
tell us what they like and what they dont like,
said Maloney.
Any changes brought up at the open house will
be incorporated into the MDP before it is brought
to council for rst reading.

Planning for the future
SHARON MCLEAY

Wheatland County coun-
cillors decided to release
$800,000 of Municipal Re-
serve Fund money on Dec.
17, to the Golden Hills
School Division (GHSD)
Board, so they can begin the
process of developing the
East Wheatland School plan.
Previously, council had
suggested withholding mon-
ey, until the Golden Hills
School Division Board and
the Catholic School Division
Board came to an agreement
on how funds collected for
them, under the Municipal
Government Act and placed
in the Municipal Reserve
Fund for their use, should be
shared.
Money in the fund comes
from land or money that de-
velopers are required to set
aside for park development
or school use. Parks receive
a 25 per cent allotment and
the various school Boards
share the remaining 75 per
cent.
In a letter to council, Gold-
en Hills School Division has
requested $1.4 million be re-
leased to start work on the
East Wheatland school site.
Golden Hills representa-
tives didnt foresee any other
funding requests would be
needed from them for a ve
year period. They considered
that the $1.4 million repre-
sents 75 per cent of funds
allotted in the Municiapl
School Reserve Fund (MSRF)
and reasoned that approxi-
mately 80 per cent of stu-
dents in Wheatland County
attend Golden Hills School
facilities, so it would be a
good t for its intended use.
We discussed this previ-
ously and we need a policy,
said Reeve Glenn Koester at
the Dec. 10 council meeting.
Chief Administrative Of-
cer Alan Parkin conrmed
that both boards had been
previously contacted by
Wheatland County staff and
both were forwarded a draft
policy for approval. No re-
sponse to the draft had been
received.
Councillor Alice Booth
stated the MGA prohibits
council from releasing funds
without the agreement of
both school boards on a
funding policy. There was
a question whether money
could indeed be released,
because the money was cov-
ering initial infrastructure
development. There was
also a question whether ma-
jor funding or the develop-
ment of new schools might
be asked for by the Catholic
Board in the near future, or if
by allotting the funds in this
manner , it would be an eq-
Wheatland tasks School Boards to reach agreement
uitable decision.
This isnt about what it is
used for, said Councillor Bren-
da Knight, who claried that
the MGA doesnt stipulate how
school boards use the funding.
it is about the agreement. With
a policy in place it makes things
cut and dried.
Parkin said gaining agreement
may not be a quick process and
could take six to eight months
or more.
We have no issue with what
they are asking for, said Coun-
cillor Ben Armstrong, but they
(both boards) need to consider
that something is in place. If we
put a time limit for a decision in
place, and if they dont come to
an agreement, then it will be left
up to councils decision.
While Armstrong was strong
about the need for agreement,
he was the one that proposed
releasing the $800,000. He said
that the Boards were also elect-
ed ofcials, representing Wheat-
land residents, and Wheatland
County has always had a good
working relationship with both
school boards.
I have a strong feeling about
this, said Councillor Ben Arm-
strong. We have always worked
with the school boards to get
their locations. We have a his-
tory of doing this. It is not spe-
cial; it is what we done for all
the others. We need to put this
in place to support the commu-
nities out there. We need to step
up to the plate and provide a
way for them to move forward.
Councillors identied issues
that will need to be addressed as
the development process goes
along in the future; such as,
the countys responsibility for
building a road into the school,
whether there is support for the
chosen school site by area resi-
dents and adjacent landowners
and questions about future de-
velopment that tends to spring
up around school sites.
A meeting with Wheatland
Council and the two boards
has been set up and if a mu-
tual agreement between the two
boards cannot be reached with-
in eight weeks, Council will set
the funding split and consider
whether they will award the re-
maining $600,000 requested by
Golden Hills School Division.

Part of the county planning process is
deciding what work needs to be done
and when, and for the General Manag-
er of Transportation and Infrastructure
Dave Churchill, it is also determining
the road less travelled and why.
To keep up with the never ending
need for road maintenance, and to ful-
ll a directive council has made to give
area residents access to paved road-
ways, a 10-year plan is put in place and
reviewed on an ongoing basis. The draft
2014-2024 plan was reviewed in council
on Dec. 17.
I went through all this and to be real-
istic, it is based on completing about 10
km per year, said Churchill. The big-
gest issue is trying to get a grid system,
so that every six miles there is a paved
road.
Road grading and paving projects are
given priority ratings based on their
condition against a balance of nancial,
manpower and equipment resources.
Then projects are planned in the order
of their priority. The 2014 interim budget
document indicates restricted reserves
will place $4.17 million on paved roads,
and $4.5 on unpaved with $8.7 million
being carried over from 2013 reserves.
Some funds will also have to go for
bridge repair and other small projects.
The document said 2014 will include a
double seal coat for the Cheadle railway
avenue at a cost of $350,000, with 50
per cent of that coming from paved road
reserve and street improvement grants,
showing that even short sections of road
recovery are expensive.
For 2014-2015, road crews will n-
ish off one mile of the north-south road
on Hammerhill, grading two miles on
RR 240, from Hwy 1 to TR 244, and six
miles on RR 255 from TR 244 to TR 254
west of 20-25-25. Three miles of paving
will be done on Township road 220 by
east Cluny and Hwy 842 (RR 214) to
Hwy 1 (RR 211).
Churchill gave council a quick look at
proposals for future projects, with the
disclaimer that the plan is not set in
stone and it might be shifted somewhat
to accommodate emergent situations.
We have taken councils input in the
past. Circumstances change, trafc ows
changewe usually revise it on a yearly
basis, said Churchill.
He anticipates 2016 will have portions
of the boundary road and Hwy 817 at-
tended to, with 2017 moving on to RR
245 by the north extension of the Ea-
gle Lake road, RR 243 by the shop in
Nightingale, RR 250 and RR 225 by 13
mile corner. Paving will be done on the
Duck Lake road in 2016-2017. Portions
of Township 270 will be paved in 2018
and portions of RR 224 in 2019. The
Eagle Lake road will be paved to the
slaughterhouse road in 2020, with RR
244-245 by Namaka Lake in 2021/2022.
A map of areas which crews are work-
ing on is posted on the County website.
The purchase of a new grader is being
planned for in the 2014 budget and will
go to Division 10, at a price of $500,000
with $375,000 coming out of MSI capital
funds. Other equipment will come out
of funds designated in eet and equip-
ment funding reserves.
Councillor Brenda Knight questioned
if equipment is working in a certain
area, wouldnt it be more cost effec-
tive and time efcient to nish a big-
ger portion of the project, rather than
doing smaller jobs here and there. She
said sometimes it leaves the public with
a perception that crews leave the project
unnished.
Churchill said that the county just
doesnt have the equipment and man-
power to do larger jobs and meet its tar-
gets. He said there really needs to be a
good discussion with all council on the
road plan.
The rst thing residents see are the
roads, said Councillor Rex Harwood.
We look to staff for that information. I

An annual physical will sometimes reveal that
you have prediabetes. This means that your blood
sugar isnt so high that you have diabetes but it
is a warning sign. Each year, up to 8% of people
with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes. This
can be prevented by losing weight, exercise and
eating more sensibly. Just losing 10 lb can reduce
your risk. January is a good time of the year to
start.
One of the changes people can make to their
diets in 2014 is to eat more fsh. Its the omega-3
fatty acids in fsh that make it such a good food to
protect against stroke and heart attacks. Salmon is
a good place to start.
Coughs come as two main types: productive and
non-productive. A productive cough is that loose,
rattling type of cough that feels like your chest is
full of phlegm. The non-productive cough is a dry
hacking one. To help the productive cough, drink-
ing lots of water, using a vaporizer and taking
expectorant cough syrups. These treatments will
help thin out that thick mucus.
Just another reminder for smokers. One of the
most common causes of productive coughs is
chronic cigarette smoking. Stopping smoking will
produce better results than any cough syrup our
pharmacists can suggest.
Cough syrups vary in their ability to help sooth a
cough. Ask our pharmacists for advice, especially
when it comes to small children with coughs.
want to be part of that discussion.
Chief Administrative Ofcer Alan Par-
kin said that staff welcome the input
they are given and councillors often
hear concerns from the community rst,
so he indicated if council was interested
there could be discussions set up in the
new year, to get direction before the
plan is nalized.
Churchill said people need to keep in
mind that the crews do a lot more work
with the equipment than just road main-
tenance. If specialized equipment is pur-
chased, there may not be enough work
to really recoup the cost of purchase.
Our crews are efcient at two to
three miles of project. We arent set up
as contractors, the crews are designed
for smaller jobs, said Churchill.
He said larger crews with more equip-
ment could complete seven miles in a
year, but currently those types of jobs
have to be tendered out. If he were to
plan for work to be completed in that
manner, he would need a bigger budget.
Councillors also were concerned
about shoulder moulding programs on
the county roadways, and in light of
funding cuts from government sources,
they didnt want to see staff cut corners
to make up funding shortfalls. They
asked staff to come up with some dif-
ferent avenues that could be explored
for meeting larger road targets as well
as their day to day work, and estimate
what the potential costs may be, bring-
ing them to council for consideration.
Hope Church on Jan. 25. Hope Church
brings in many different kinds of music
experiences for the public, and Eyger-
aam said local youth shouldnt be wor-
ried about the venue and come out to
what promises to be a fun night.
There is some youth that dont enjoy
church or come to church, so we just
want to have an energetic night that we
hope they will enjoy, said Eygenraam.

had left Scotland earlier and
sailed to New Zealand, be-
fore coming to Canada. What
a journey that must have
been! They purchased land
near the Lyalta Road and the
TransCanada Hwy. The farm
became 100 years old in May
2010, and is still operated by
the Keer Family, under the
name Kerora Farming Co.
Ltd.
During the drought of the
1930s, farming was brought
to a standstill. Johns par-
ents went where there was
work to be had, and in this
case it was in the Longview
Area. John was born in the
Village of Royalties, in 1938.
A shanty-town built for peo-
ple working in the oil patch,
also known as Little Chicago.
They returned to the farm in
1942, and have been there
ever since. John went to a
one-room school at Turner,
formerly on the Lyalta Road,
from Grades 1 to 7. From here
REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~John & Carol Keer
he went to Samuel Crowther,
before attending Olds School
of Agriculture.
Carol was local born, in
Namaka, in 1942. She at-
tended the two-room Na-
maka School until Grade 9,
before be-
ing bussed
to Samuel
Cr owt her
in Strath-
m o r e
where she
and John
met. When
they were
in Grade 8,
it was a re-
quirement
for them
to join the
Strathmore
Army Cadets, as part of their
schooling! This would have
been in the early 1950s after
the Second World War ended.
They were married in
Strathmore United Church on
Dec. 4, 1965, and this mar-
riage produced two daugh-
ters and a son, and they now
have 10 grandchildren, and
three great-grandchildren.
They are very proud of them
all including the parents.
John worked for Jondor
Realty for about 10 years,
but his main occupation was
farming. He and his brother
Bert operated the farm joint-
ly with both cattle and grain
for a number of years, but
it is now only grain. Sadly
his brother passed away in
2009, and now John and his
son Doug operate the farm
together. Carol worked in
Calgary for ve years before
their marriage, then returned
to the farm to become a
mother, and the farm book-
keeper.
In 1981, John designed and
built the Keer Shear, which
attaches to the swather for
dividing canola at harvest
time.
In the mid-1970s, it was
very hard to obtain good qual-
ity farm labour, so through
I.A.E.A.- International Agri-
cultural Exchange Associa-
tion based
in Den-
mark, they

the next
23 years
they host-
ed 26 stu-
dents from
Denmark,
S we d e n ,
Ho l l a n d ,
England, Scotland, Australia
and New Zealand. The stu-
dents were always accom-
modated at the farm. The
students found this a very
heart-warming experience.
John is a founding member
of Cheadle Lions, formed to
raise funds for wherever as-
sistance was needed.
The main changes in
the area, is the population
growth.
They used to know all their
neighbours, but dont now.
Mainly because all the small-
er farms have been replaced
by large farms. In the old
days, they were surrounded
by dark countryside, but now
due to the growth of both
Strathmore to the east, and
Calgary to the west, they can
see the lights of residential
sub-divisions. Road improve-
ments include the twinning
of the TransCanada Hwy, and
the more recent paving of the
Lyalta Road.
They feel their farming
success is due to the qual-
ity of employees theyve had
over the years.

Giving a pet for Christ-
mas or other special occa-
sions can seem like a great
idea. I mean, who wouldnt
want a new puppy or a cat?
But when you really stop to
think about it, the pet may
be a great new furry com-
panion, but its also giving
that person a commitment
they may not be ready for.
We dont recommend giv-
ing pets as gifts at all. We
recognize that in some cases
it may be appropriate, the
kids have been bugging for
a puppy and the family has
decided to get a puppy and
they want to do it at Christ-
mas or a birthday, said
Christine Campbell, chair-
person for Oops-a-Dazy Res-
cue and Sanctuary Society.
In those sorts of cases
what we recommend doing
is asking the rescue group,
or the breeder or whoever
you are going through to get
your pet, ask them if they
have any sort of a gift certi-
cate available,
Oops-a-Dazy will make
gift card in the adoption fee
denomination for the type of
pet people are looking for.
This way the person receiv-
ing the gift card can think
about the decision and make
sure they are ready. This also
allows them to pick a pet
that is going to match their
lifestyle well.
If you have received a pet
as a gift you need to deter-
mine if the pet is right for
you, and if you can nan-
cially afford to support the
animal.
If the answer is no then
you need to look at what are
the options. Does the breed-
er or rescue group have any
kind of return policy? It is
not admitting defeat to admit
you are not ready for a pet,
said Campbell.
Its more important that
the pet is going to have a
good home for the rest of
its life. So often well have
animals that get adopted as
a Christmas gift, or bunnies
at Easter but once the nov-
elty has worn off thats when
they end up being surren-
Think before you give a pet as a gift
BACK TO THE ROUTINE
As we get our feet back under
us and get back into the swing of
everyday life again, we quite often
come into the year tired and weary.
Despite all the family, food and fun,
we get worn out and then go right
back into the busyness of life. We
wonder why we get so burned out
and tired and ponder over how
much nances we spent during
holidays and very quickly we get
bogged down with the baggage
and responsibilities of life.
Our Creator made a beautiful world
around us that we get much too
busy to enjoy. He said that Jesus
came to give life and give it more
abundantly. In other words, He
wants us to take time to enjoy it.
It seems as life goes on, we get
busier instead of slowing down.
And the busier we get, the more we
forget our important priorities and
before we know it, our kids have
grown up and we have missed out
on the important things in life be-
cause we were too busy attending
to details.
Sometimes its good to just stop
and take a rest. Thats what God
did on the seventh day. He stopped
and said that all was good and
made it a day for rest. He didnt
design us to work seven days
a week, without any personal
enjoyment and pleasure. Even the
snow we have had is beautiful
and fresh in the morning when the
sun is coming up and reecting its
colors. There is enjoyment in so
many things around us. A new born
baby, a sunset, owers, people, the
way God can paint every branch
with sparkling frost for the most
beautiful landscape, watching the
deer by the river or listening to your
family.
The Bible says to us that if we are
getting tired and weary, to come
to Him and He will give us rest. He
created us with that need and is
longing to show Himself to us even
in the simple things.
Rather than looking at all the things
that havent gone right lets be
encouraged this year to stop and
count our blessings and enjoy what
has been given to us and thank
our Heavenly Father for His love
and care for us no matter what our
circumstances. He always waits,
with open arms. Give Him your time
and He will give you rest.

dered to a rescue group or a shelter.
By the time an animal ends up in
a rescue group or a shelter they may
have behavioral issues stemming from
being in a home that wasnt quite ready
for them. This can also affect whether
or not the pet gets adopted into a new
home.
If returning a pet isnt an option, then
there are strategies about re-homing
a pet. Make sure rst off that you do
plenty of research. Oops-a-Dazy would
be more than happy to talk to someone
looking to responsibly re-home a pet.
What we dont recommend doing is
the Kijiji free to good home ads. Some-
times those homes arent as good as
they make themselves out to be, said
Campbell.
She feels that if people have to work
a little harder to get a pet, or spend
some money, than they are more likely
to value that animal.
Ideally someone receiving a pet as a
gift will have talked to the giver about
it rst. To ensure you get the best start
with your new pet be sure to talk to as
many experts as you can, your veteri-
narian, trainer and even rescue groups
have resources available to the public.
One option Oops-a-Dazy has avail-
able is that gift cards purchased can
also be made into a donation for the
organization if the recipient decides a
pet is not for them at this time.
Its a nice option, it is kind of a win-
win even if they dont end up getting
that pet. It helps them make a respon-
sible decision but also still feel good
about it, said Campbell.
Oops-a-Dazy has approximately
200 adoptable animals waiting for a
good home. The fee for adopting a pet
through the rescue group depends on
age and type of animal. All of the adop-
tions cover spay or neuter, the micro-
chip, at least one set of vaccinations,
de-worming and one month of free pet
insurance.

the new owners of Joyland

Bill and Sheila Crispin have
retired, selling the theatre to
the Larsons.

Joyland Theatre is under new owner-
ship as of this month. The theatre has
been returned to its family roots after
being bought by Jeff and Kathy Larson.
Joyland Theatre has been in Strath-
more since 1951, rst owned by Leon-
ard Larson, Jeffs grandfather, until
1969.
Lanny Larson then took it over until
1975, when it was sold to George Elisie
for two years before Bill and Sheila
Crispin took it over in 1978.
It will be good, Jeff and his wife
will be very good. I am very condent
theyre going to look after our theatre,
said Sheila Crispin.
She and her husband Bill plan to
take things easy and do whatever they
want. The Crispins havent quite g-
ured out what that is yet, but Sheila
said they are happy to gure it out.
They now wont have to be in town at
the theatre every night for the show,
and Crispin joked that she may get a
chance to watch evening television,
something she hasnt been able to do
since buying the theatre.
Owning the Joyland Theatre one day
was always Jeff Larsons dream. His
dad promised to sell him the theatre
one day, but it was sold before Lar-
son was old enough to buy it. Jeff and
Kathy Larson also own the Drumheller
Theatre.
We just got to know them (the
Crispins) over time and I said to Bill
whenever youre ready to retire and
you want to sell this place let me know,
give me rst shot at it, so thats what
theyve done, said Larson.
For the time being everything will
stay the same as it always has. There
will be no price increases, and the the-
atre will still only show one show a
night. Larson said the theatre would
also still remain closed on Monday
nights.
Running a late show never seems to
draw much of a crowd, its not really
worthwhile doing it, so we get them all
in on one show. When there is a kids
show on we will run matinees on Sat-
urday and Sunday as well, said Larson.
Well make a few changes to the the-
atre but nothing drastic, I would like to
repaint the interior and do something
with the signage out on the building.
Larson will be travelling with one of
his sons to Strathmore nightly to work
the theatre. A few minor changes will
be taking place in the concession; there
will be a few new items and a combo
pack for adults and children.
Larson has been in the movie indus-
try for 25 years and loves it as much
now as he did when he was a kid.

and its just a fun business to be in,
said Larson.
I like small town atmosphere, we
like living in a small town where you
get to know people and everyone
knows you, I dont like the big city.
Movies shown at the theatre are
brought in based on whats popular.
I check the box ofce gures online
every weekend and see what the top
ve movies are and anything that is in
the top ve movies is what we try to go
after and play. Sometimes you can play
movies on release but you have to run
it for two weeks, said Larson.
The rule of thumb is whatever is
popular is what you try and book be-
cause thats what people want to see.
It doesnt matter if you are in a small
town or the big city the top ve movies
are what everyone wants to see.

ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH

A game that went back and forth for 60 minutes resulted
in a tie for the bantam Wheatland Warriors against the Leth-
bridge Hurricanes on Jan. 4, by a score of 5-5. Rylan Long-
muir had two goals; Brady Skifngton and Ryan McHarg had
two helpers.
We denitely werent very happy with the performance in
Lethbridge. We thought there were too many passengers in
the game, Warriors coach Mark Laycock said. We pulled out
a 5-5 tie, but we were probably lucky to pull out a 5-5 tie.
Laycock believes his players didnt want to win badly
enough, but turned it around the next day against the Bad-
lands Longhorns, winning 11-0 at home.
They wanted to come out showing that they were ready
to play. After Christmas, I think not playing a game in a
couple weeks, we werent quite prepared to go back to work
yet, Laycock said.
Warriors goalie Ty Tarvyd only needed to stop 10 shots,
while Wheatland put 68 on the Longhorns net. Ty Skehar,
Chayse Hnatowich, and Kyle Merkosky each had three point
nights; the latter has 41 points in 24 games, earning him fth
in the league in scoring.
I think weve been pushing that intensity is going up,
Laycock said. Were going to have a lot of hockey here over
the next couple months. They should be motivated. Were
top of the league right now but its hard to stay there.
The bantams are 21-1-2 with 148 goals for and 46 against.

on Jan. 3, the midget Wheatland Chiefs were victorious 6-3.
Though Taber opened the scoring and had a 3-2 lead by
the end of the second, the third period was all Chiefs, who
scored four goals including one on the powerplay. Wheatland
had 51 shots on net, which resulted in a three-point night
for Taylor Donner, and a two-goal night for Cole Busslinger.
Two days later, the Chiefs dropped to the Okotoks Oil-
ers 4-2; coincidentally, Chiefs goalie Mike Conrad faced 51
shots. Wheatland had 20 minutes in the box, which led to
two Okotoks powerplay goals. Blair Roszell and Coltyn Her-
man scored for the Chiefs; Herman leads the team with 36
points in 22 games, though with three less games played,
Cody Willis is right behind with 34 points. Both are top ten
in league scoring.
The midgets are now 14-6-2 for the season, and tied for
rst in the North Division with 30 points. The Red Deer Indy
Graphics also have 30 points, but have played one less game.
BRAVES BUTCHERED
Ethan Phan had the peewee Wheatland Braves lone goal
in their 6-1 loss at home on Jan. 5 to the Sylvan Lake Lakers.
The Braves had only nine shots on net, while Wheatlands
Ethan Rycroft stopped 19 of 25 shots. The peewees hope to
improve their 9-11-3 record against the Foothills Bisons on
Jan. 11.
J ANUARY 1 0 , 2 0 1 4
The Wheatland Warriors trampled over the Badlands Longhorns 11-0 at
home on Jan. 5. The bantam Warriors managed 68 shots on the Badlands
net. The two teams had a similar score on Sept. 21, when the Warriors de-
feated the Longhorns 11-2.

With 16 teams and 64 players, the
Strathmore Curling Club kicked off their
rst shorty bonspiel of 2014 on Jan. 4,
with rst and second place in sections
A, B, and C taking home cash prizes.
When I grew up in Regina, we used
to run these shorties every once in a
while, for people that arent regular
curlers, to give people a chance to come
out and play once or twice a winter,
said Craig Koch, Strathmore Curling
Club president. It went over great.
Koch had the clubs bar and kitchen
open for service, and also offered a few
door prizes along with the 50/50 draw.
It was fun, everybody had a good
time. We had a lot of people out to
the rink that weve never seen before,
which is great. Hopefully these little
shorties will increase our membership
as the years go on, Koch said.
Koch has been president of the club
for just over 90 days, he joked.
Its been quite a learning curve, he
said. Were hoping to make the rink a
lot more accessible to the community
than it has been because other than the
members and the schools, its being un-
derutilized. From advertising and these
little shorty events, hopefully we can
generate more interest.
The club plans to hold another event
on March 29.
Near the end of the season, were go-
ing to try and bump up to 32 teams and
do an all day-all night event, Koch said.

At the World Sports School Chal-
lenge against ve other teams, the
Rockyview Raiders recorded three
wins and two losses one of those
losses coming in the nal against Shat-
tuck St. Marys on Dec. 31, by a score
of 6-2. That loss, however, earned
them a silver in the tournament.
I have to say that was some of the
most incredible hockey I have ever
seen, Raiders general manager Todd
Virostek said.
The Raiders defeated The Edge 4-3
on Dec. 28, with Strathmores Kody
Hammond and Brad Hendricks notch-
ing assists; Siksikas Trygve Many
Guns added a goal. The next day,
Rockyview defeated OHA Elite 4-1,
with Strathmore-born Markus Lavallee
scoring a hat-trick. After a loss of 5-1
to Shattuck St Marys, the Raiders won
on Dec. 30 against The Edge 1-0 for
a spot in the nal. In the champion-
ship game, Hammond and Many Guns
found the back of the net, while Hen-
dricks added another assist.
I thought we did very well, Raid-
ers coach Doug Thurston said. The
only games we lost were against Shat-
tuck. They carry half their team with
16-year-olds. That certainly is a huge
difference when we were lling spots
with 14-year-old bantams.
Goalie Hunter Virostek and defen-
semen Dawson Wade were named to
the World Sports School Challenge All-
Star Team.
Three bantams lled roster spots for
the Raiders, including one for Strath-
more forward Chris Rebeyka, who
was injured.
In November following their silver
nish at the Prospect Cup, the team
spiraled in their league play; possibly
from being overcondent, Thurston
said.
Its dj vu this weekend. We played
a team we probably should have beat
on Saturday, he said.
The Raiders dropped to CRAA Blue
6-4 on Jan. 4. Rebeyka returned, and
added one goal.
We were pretty tight defensively in
the Edge Tournament. We werent very
tight after. That was frustrating, Thur-
ston said.
The following night, led by two
goals from Many Guns, and one by
Strathmores Liam Rycroft, the Raid-
ers beat the NWCAA Stampeders by a
score of 3-1.
Depending on how Rockyford n-
ishes up their season, they will com-
pete in the Sutter Cup in March taking
place in Medicine Hat.

The Strathmore Curling
Club hosted their very frst
shorty tournament on Sat-
urday, Jan. 4. The event
was created to introduce
more people to the sport of
curling without intimidating
them by playing full length
games. All three sheets of
ice were busy for a straight
eight hours, playing mini
four-end games. The turn-
out was great and the plan
is to do more shorty tour-
naments.

For the rst time sincelate October the UFA Bisons have lost two league games
in a row. They fell to the Leduc Oil Kings 4-2 on Jan. 4, and to the Lloydminster
Baker Hughes Bobcats the next day, 3-1.
All of a sudden if it was because of the Macs, I dont know we had about
ve or six guys get really sick. We just werent up to our best, Dan MacDonald
said, Bisons head coach.
The Oil Kings and the Bisons were tied 2-2 at the end of their second period,
but Leduc popped in two early in the third to take the win. Bisons goalie Carter
Seminuk stopped 16 shots, while his teammates red 34 on net; William Conley
and Clay Murray had two points each. Against Lloydminster, Zach Giroux had the
Bisons lone goal, while Garrett Mason backstopped 36 shots.
The other teams were good. The two teams we played are tops in the North Di-
vision, MacDonald said. We werent successful. We werent ready to play again.
The Bisons had also lost to both teams earlier in the season (6-1 against Leduc
on Nov. 2, 4-1 against Lloydminster on Nov. 9). The squad is now three points
behind the Calgary Royals for top spot in the Chrysler Division.
Were kind of snake bit right now. We have to get over that and then get back
in gear here, MacDonald said.
With eight games remaining before the playoffs begin, the Bisons coaches are
stressing details to their players.
Weve put a lot of freedom to our play up to this point in time, MacDonald
said. Now we have to shore everything up and play as a real team. Theyre going
to have to pay attention to the details of the systems we have.
If the Bisons stay in their position, they would have the rst week off in the
playoffs, as the top two teams in each division receive a bye.
ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH

Having tied their rst two games,
and lost their third game of the Macs
Tournament in Calgary, the UFA Bisons
did not have a chance to qualify for the
playoffs when they stepped onto the
ice for their nal game of the tourna-
ment on Dec. 30 against the Vancouver
NE Chiefs at the Max Bell Centre.
We knew we were out so it doesnt
have the same emotional pull. It just
becomes an exhibition game that you
do your best in, Bisons coach Dan
MacDonald said.
Bisons suffer Macs hangover
Bisons max out at Macs
The Bisons took a 3-0 lead half way
through the second period, with goals
from Chad Harrison, Connor Boyd, and
Clay Murray. Then, within three min-
utes later, the Chiefs made it 3-2, with
one of their goals coming on the pow-
erplay.
Were just trying to get as many
players out there, MacDonald said. Of
course we dont want to give up a lead.
But when youre out, youre out, you
know? Its hard to explain that feeling.
It just wasnt the same thing.
Matthew Forchuk scored near the
end of the second to make it 4-2; Van-
couver striked halfway through the
third to come within one, but could
not manage to tie, putting the nal at
4-3. The Bisons managed 42 shots on
net, while Bisons goalie Garrett Mason
stopped 22 of 25 shots.
The tournaments very difcult to
play in when you dont practice be-
forehand, MacDonald said. We played
two teams that are in our division.
We would like to play teams that we
dont know; I think it loses its air
when youre playing against your own
league. The tournament is internation-
al, we want to play international teams
from different areas and see how we
compare.
Throughout the tournament, the Bi-
sons had 15 goals for and against, and
also had the most penalty minutes in
their pool with 87.
We come fast, and when we come
fast, it seems like they call us quickly
on everything we do. The referees are
assuming because of the speed that we
play at, and because we come hard on
the puck, but really were not doing all
the things they say were doing, in my
opinion, MacDonald said. We do have
to be careful with the amount of penal-
ties we take, and we do seem to take
quite a few.
The Bisons nished a disappointing
1-1-2 in the Macs Tournament, having
reached the nal two of the last ve
years.
On Jan. 1, Finlands U-17 squad de-
feated Switzerland U-17 by a score of
7-1. On the girls side, the Westman
Wildcats edged out the Fraser Valley
Phantom 2-1.
The UFA Bisons
dropped to the Lloyd-
minster Baker Hughes
Bobcats at home on
Jan. 5, 3-1, and lost
the night before 4-2
against the Leduc Oil
Kings. Bisons coach
Dan macDonald at-
tributes the losses to
several players falling
ill following the macs
Tournament.

UPSHAW,
Harold Dean
Harold Dean Upshaw passed
away after a brief illness on De-
cember 15, 2013 at the Strath-
more Hospital at the age of 85. Dean came to
us from his birthplace and hometown of Colfax
Washington, relocating with his family in 1966 to
Calgary, Alberta after spending many years over-
seas. In the 1950s and 1960s Dean worked as a
construction superintendent with world renowned
construction company Morrison-Knudsen, in
which he co-ordinated the construction and pour-
ing of the jet runways in Kandahar, Afghanistan,
and later, similar projects near Saigon, Vietnam.
Deans love of farming brought him to the wheat
elds of Alberta, and eventually to the fertilizer
business where he interacted with many area
farmers and the Southern Alberta community.
Combining experience, ideas, and technology with
Stan Castella and Gordon Krune, he opened Cas-
cade Fertilizer in Standard, Alberta in the 1970s
which serviced much of the area with agricul-
tural fertilizer products as well as manufacturing
the only source of chemical re retardant in the
province at that time. Dean was well known and
well respected in the community through his time
in the fertilizer business and made many lifelong
friends during that time. Dean took great pride
in the development and construction of the plant
in Standard, Alberta, and his part in its long term
success; as well as the team of men who he
worked alongside of in the eld and yard, several
who today are still there now running the com-
pany. Dean is survived by his wife Beverley Up-
shaw; daughter Shannon Collens of Kelowna; his
step children Chris Noble of Ponoka; and Kerry
Noble of Strathmore; his sister Bonnie of Colfax,
Washington; grandchildren Morgan and Madison
Collens, Samantha and Bob Upshaw (Leslie), Mark
Zanewick, Brittany and Matthew Noble; and his
great grandchildren Hayden and Kelsey Upshaw.
Dean was predeceased by his son Chris Upshaw
in 1973; his rst wife Lorraine in 2003; his son
Randy Upshaw in 2013; his brother Kenneth; and
his mother and father, Helen and Harold Upshaw.
A Celebration of Deans Life will be held on Mon-
day, January 13, 2014 at Hope Community Cove-
nant Church at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of owers, please
make donations directly to the Alzheimer Society
of Calgary (201, 222 58 Ave S.W., Calgary, Al-
berta, T2H 2S3). To send condolences, please visit
