onah refused to go to Nineveh and instead went to Tarshish to the west. Instead of letting Jonah have his way, God interferes supernaturally. Wind is not something we usually consider supernatural. However, in this case, it is Gods deliberate act. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep (verse 5). This must have been a mighty storm, because the actions of the sailors indicate that they were in great desperation. You dont throw out your valuables, your profit, your very livelihood. This was life threatening. They knew their time had come. Then something strange is recorded. Jonah was fast asleep. Doubtless, he was

fully convinced that the God of Israel, whom he believed and trusted, was in total control, even during the greatest storm. We are reminded here of our Lord who also slept in the midst of a great storm: And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm (Matthew 8:24-26). What a tremendous lesson for each of us. In the midst of the greatest storm, when everything seems to go contrary to our plans, when burdens threatening to overpower us, when life actually hangs in the balance, we may sleep and rest in full confidence that our Lord, who has saved us from the power of darkness, is well able to keep us.

The storm was for the unbelievers, those who did not know the God of Israel, the Creator of heaven and earth. Here in Jonahs case, the sailors are in jeopardy of their life, and in Jesus event, the disciples thought so too. Now the shipmaster confronts Jonah: So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not (verse 6). Quite apparently, Jonah didnt care, but still kept quiet. So the crew had to act: And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah (verse 7). One thing is clear: these heathen sailors, who worshiped idols, knew what was happening to them was most unusual. A storm of such magnitude, which they should have foreknown to a certain degree, was due to a higher power. But Jonah continues to be silent: we hear no word of testimony, nor does he volunteer any information. This called for an interrogation: Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? (verse 8). This type of interrogation is still practiced in many countries, although today, the immigration officer or border police can gather this information from the persons passport. But in olden days, the proof of identity was the spoken word of a man. Finally, Jonah gives information: And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land (verse 9). This was a message these heathens had not heard before, the God of heaven. We must keep in mind that literature wasnt available in great volumes, and then only to the very elite, the intellectuals who were able to read and write. The spoken Word was still decisive; it was believed, it was feared: Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them (verse 10). For them, there was no argument as to the truths of Jonahs testimony. They knew something extraordinary had occurred. They were convinced all was lost, and that there was no chance in surviving this most horrendous storm that had come upon them. Next came the logical question: Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous (verse 11). Without hesitancy, Jonah, the servant of God, who knew the Creator of Heaven and Earth, demonstrates his full trust in Him: And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you (verse 12). This shouldnt have been very easy. Here we have a man who was sleeping in the ship during a great storm. He did not care about the crew or the ship. Yet he confesses that he is the guilty party.

He also told them he was a servant of the God of Heaven, and that was sufficient for the sailors to be afraid to follow the instruction of Jonah; they hesitated to cast the servant of God into the sea: Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them (verse 13). Next, we read that the sailors no longer cried unto their idols, as mentioned in verse 5, and cried every man unto his god. Now they cry unto the Lord: Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this mans life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee (verse 14). In fear of the Living God, these sailors follow Jonahs instruction: So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging (verse 15). Instantly, the sea ceased from raging. Something had happened to the sailors. We can rightly say they were converted: Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows (verse 16). What happened to Jonah? Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights (verse 17). The God of Heaven, who caused a storm to threaten the lives of all the men, is the same God who also caused the sea to be calm, and it was Him who prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. One miracle is not greater than the other. God can and does on occasion use supernatural intervention for His specific purpose. Later in history, the Lord Jesus Himself refers to Jonah, For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whales belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here (Matthew 12:40-41). Jonah is highly esteemed in this quotation of our Lord. He was a man who trusted in the Lord in spite of the fact that he attempted to flee from the presence of the Lord. MC

Jesus Christ and His Word are the absolute truth. This is why Satan uses every means to rebel against them. Every attack on Christianity and the Bible, all blasphemy, and every battle against Israel is proof of the truth of Jesus Christ and the Word of God.
Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision, Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him (Psalm 2:1-12). The Psalms are inspired by the Holy Spirit, just as the whole of the Bible is. David testifies to this at the end of his life, Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God (2 Samuel 23:1-3). How do we know that Psalm 2 was written by David? We do not find the answer in the psalm itself, but in the book of Acts. There Psalm 2 is quoted by the first Church in Jerusalem, when the believers prayed to God, Thou art Godwho by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did

the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things (Acts 4:24-25ff). Doubtless, then, Psalm 2 was written by David, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The battle against God is a battle against Jesus and the truth of the Bible
Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed (Psalm 2:1-2). Jesus Christ and His Word are the absolute truth. This is why Satan uses every means to rebel against them. Every attack on Christianity and the Bible, all blasphemy, and every battle against Israel is proof of the truth of Jesus Christ and the Word of God. If it were not true, for instance, that Israel is the chosen people of God and has a wonderful future promised by Him, She would not be so disputed. Satan inspires mankind to contest these truths. In Psalm 2 various statements are made concerning the reality and truth of Jesus Christ: 1. Jesus is the Anointed One of God: the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed. Anointed is called Messiah in Hebrew, and Christ in Greek. Kings, priests and prophets were anointed in Israel. In Jesus these three characteristics are united: He is king, priest and prophet in one. In Acts 10:38 we read, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Nobody could do the signs and wonders that He could do. He accomplished Messianic signs and wonders which the people recognized and asked, Is this not the son of David? (Matthew 12:23).

2. Jesus is the king, as the Lord God says, I have set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. The promised King of Israel is called Jesus. When Jesus was born, the wise men from the East recognized in Him the King. They started on their journey and sought Him with the words, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him (Matthew 2:2). During His life on earth, many people in Israel saw in Jesus the King, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord (John 12:13). When Jesus was condemned and stood before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, the latter asked Him, Art thou a king then?, and Jesus answered him, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I unto the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice (John 18:37). Jesus died as the King of Israel; the inscription over His cross reads, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS (John 19:19). But He rose from the dead and returned to heaven. From there He will return as King. If this were not so, Jesus would have lied when He answered Pilate, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I unto the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Tim LaHaye and Thomas Ice write in this connection, God cannot lie or deceive. If Jesus does not return, He isputting it mildlyguilty of deceit. Yet as this is completely incompatible with His earthly life, His promises and His divine nature, this is absolutely impossible. The fact that He said, I will return, remains.1 The statement of the apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 6:13-15 emphasizes the fact that He will return, I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus

Christ: which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord or lords (compare also Revelation 19:16). Jesus is the promised King; this stands irrevocably fast, but the way to this for the Son of the living God was the cross. 3. Jesus is the Son of God. This is also quite clear from Psalm 2, I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potters vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings; be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Verse 7 refers to the incarnation of Jesus and His birth in Bethlehem at His first coming, I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. The angel Gabriel proclaimed the birth of Jesus to Mary as follows, He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the highest: and the Lord God shall give

existence of Jesus 1,000 years before His incarnation. In Psalm 2:5 the wrath of God the Father is described, and in verse 12 the wrath of God the Son. 5. The future belongs to Jesus. In Psalm 2:6 & 8-9 we read in this connection, Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of ZionAsk of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potters vessel. The world rule of the future belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ, whether this suits the world or not, whether people believe it or not, whether they deny it or reject it or not, whether they resist it or not. Jesus is the coming world ruler, for the Eternal God says, I have set my king upon my holy hill of Zion (Psalm 2:6). His return and future government are so sure that God can only laugh and shake His head at those who do not want to believe this fact, He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision (verse 4). Satan, who rules the nations, opposes these five truths, Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us (Psalm 2:1-3). According to 2 Corinthians 4:4, the God of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers. And in Ephesians 2:2 we read of the course of this world and the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Our world is under the influence of Satan. His battle, however, is against Jesus. This was the case at the birth of the Son of God (all male children

unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end (Luke 1:32-33). Through the coming of Jesus as Redeemer, the decree of God was realised in the Gospel. In this connection the Son says, I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me Jesus became man and brought us the Gospel, the decree of God for salvation (compare Ephesians 1:9-11). Psalm 2:12 refers to the return of Jesus and His worldwide reign. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed (Daniel 7:13-14). 4. Jesus is the same as God. This is stated in Psalm 2:3, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. Here God and the Son are put on par with one another, as Philippians 2:6 also makes clear. David testified to the eternal

under the age of two years in Bethlehem and round about were murdered by Herod, Matthew 2:1ff), and this is also being fulfilled in the current race against His return (Revelation 12:13), for the proof of God on earth is to disappear. This battle will end at Armageddon.

Satan uses two bodies of people in his battle against God

We see this also from Psalm 2, Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? (verse 1). We have the two terms heathen and people. Whilst the word heathen can also be taken to mean nations, the word people can also be used to designate the tribes of Israel, as is clear from the Acts of the Apostles, for instance: 1. The first fulfilment in the early days of the Church. When Peter and John were released, they came to the believers of the first Church and told them how the chief priests and elders had threatened them. In the following prayer of the Church, we read, who by the mouth of thy servant David has said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast

anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done (Acts 4:25-28). The Church, as also the apostles Peter and John, saw in the recent events of the crucifixion of Jesus and the following persecution of the apostles a fulfilment of verse 2: Herod as an Edomite and the Herodians as a party, Pilate and the host of his soldiers represent the nations. The elders of the Jews; the high priest, the Pharisees, scribes and Sadduccees, stand for the people of Israel. Therewith the whole of the Jewish nation of that time, besides the nations, are held responsible for their hatred for Jesus Christ. All these had united in the decision to crucify the Anointed One, i.e. the Messiah. 2. The main fulfilment concerns the return of Jesus At the end of time. Once again, Psalm 2:13 says, Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. It is terrifying but true, that at the end of time the nations and also Israel will attempt to free themselves of the bands and cords of

Biblical prophecy leaves us in no doubt that a large majority of the Jewish people will fall away in the last time. Daniel, for instance, says, And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up (Daniel 8:23).
God. We read of raging and imagining and taking counsel in their efforts to be free from God. And we have come a long way already in this direction. As we shall see from the following, we are indeed living today at the end of time: a) Amongst the nations The order of creation is disregarded. Man wants to be rid of everything that reminds him of a God to whom he has to give account. It began with the Age of Enlightenment, which followed the time of the Reformation, as a counter-attack of Satan: reason was put in the place of God. In our day the reference to God is being struck out of constitutions. In France crosses are being taken down. Mockery and blasphemy are becoming ever more blatant. The creature, as at the time before the flood, is being exalted over the Creator (compare Romans 1:20ff). Blessing and marrying of homosexuals and lesbians. Church divorce ceremonies. The theory of evolution is taught in schools although famous scientists have spoken against it. Abolition of Christianity, or the insulting of Christians who acknowledge the Bible as their absolute authority for every sphere of their lives, by writing them off as Fundamentalists. True Christianity is being renounced in favour of a multi-religious society. In the rebellion against God, Jews and Christians are in the way.

The individual is no longer prepared to change himself and to break with sin. On the contrary, people want to cast off the bands of God and cast away His cords. b) Amongst the Jewish people. With the words, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us (Psalm 2:3), the apostasy within the people of Israel is described, which is comprised of many Jews who have returned out of the nations. This referred primarily to the anti-Christian predecessor, Antiochus Epiphanes, but will find its ultimate fulfilment in the Antichrist. We read in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 concerning apostasy and the Antichrist, Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Where will the apostasy take place which will bring the Antichrist to seat himself in the Jewish temple? In Israel! Israel will make a covenant of peace with the future world ruler (the beast out of the sea, Revelation 13:1ff). Therewith it will be possible for the Antichrist to seat himself in the Temple (Revelation 13:11ff).

The epistle of Jude concerns itself in particular with the deception, the mockery and rebellion against God in the last days. It is surely not without significance that it is the last New Testament letter before the apocalypse. It is as though he wants to show us the situation on earth as it will be shortly before the revelation of the wrath of God and the return of Jesus, But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; how that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts (Jude 17-18). A few verses before it says, And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him (verses 14-15). 3. The futile battle. For all those who want to bring God down from heaven or break his bands and cords of love, He has only a pitying smile, mockery even, He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision (Psalm 2:4). The Bible calls the attempts of nations, peoples, rulers and individuals to rebel

against God vain, futile, from the start (verses 1-3). This is why the Lord can only laugh at the tremendous efforts of man to abolish God or to be rid of Him. Yes, God is a God who can laugh. He can even laugh at the foolishness of people who think He does not exist. If they could, high mountains such as Mount Everest, the Kilimanjaro, the Rocky Mountains or Mont Blanc would laugh if a mole would try to get rid of them. God not only sees the present situation but also the end, and this is why He can laugh at certain patterns of behaviour in man, The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming (Psalm 37:1213). And the psalmist prays in Psalm 59:7-8, Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear? But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision. It is as though God would express His thoughts with a smile and say, You people cant get rid of Me! This is a fitting example of the futility of opposing God in the Old Testament. Consider Joshua as a picture of Jesus, and the city of Jericho as a picture of the godlessness of men in the last days who have separated themselves from all that is godly, Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. And the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour (Joshua 6:1-2). sion. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Mankind has largely rejected the revealed decree of God in His Son; the nations as well as Israel have done this. Today at the end of time, the apostasy is becoming more and more blatant and unashamed. It will reach its climax in the appearing of the Antichrist. God has long been silent and made His decree known. Now He has ceased to laugh, and speaks in anger. When God no longer laughs, the world has nothing to laugh about either. In Psalm 2 we find two connections with the book of the Revelation: a) The wrath of God and the Lamb (verses 5 & 12). In Revelation 6:16-17 we find a parallel text, and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? We are concerned here with people who persevered in their rebellion, and neglected to take refuge in Jesus in time (verse 12). They will call upon the mountains and rocks to give them protection in desperation. But there is no power in the world that can help these people.

b) His righteous government (verse 9). There is a parallel text to this in Revelation 12:5, And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. c) His sovereign rule (verse 6). This is also spoken of in Revelation 14:1, And I looked, and lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Fathers name written in their foreheads. These three statements are summarized in Revelation 19:15-16, And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. 5. To surrender is better than to fight. In Psalm 2:10-12 it says, Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. The New International Version translates this last sentence, Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Here our world is given the urgent advice to surrender before the Son of God, to capitulate before Him and to take refuge in Him. It is like a final warning before the breaking out of the wrath of God and, what is more, is a very similar situation to that before the flood. Before the judgment upon Sodom, it says in Genesis 18:20-21, And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous: I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to

the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. Before the judgment of the flood, we read, And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years (Genesis 6:3). Today these sins are all being committed again. They are mentioned in the letter of Jude, right before the book of the Revelation. We read in verse 4, For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Of the time of Noah, when demons had sexual contact with women, it says, And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day (verse 6). He speaks in the next verse of the time of Lot, Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire (verse 7). And then people are described, of whom there are more and more in our times, who blatantly ignore what should be a warning to them, Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise domination, and speak evil of dignitiesWoe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever (verses 8 & 11-13). But the Lord will surely come and reckon up with them, And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken again him (verses 14-15).

True protection for time and eternity

In Psalm 2:10-12 the Lord shows us five things as His counsel: Be wise now Be instructed Serve the Lord Kiss the Son. The kissing of the feet was in olden days a sign of subjection under a victorious king. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him (take refuge in Him). Psalm 2 ends on a positive note, with an invitation from God regarding His Son. Gods decree was in the incarnation of Jesus (verse 7). The Gospel of Christ, His death on the cross and His resurrection, is the place where you can take refuge and flee the wrath of God. Ultradispensationalists believe there are two churches in the New Testament; it is believed the first church was established by Christ in the Gospels and Acts, and the second church was formed with the ministry of Paul. The church established by Christ was Jewish and the church established by Paul was Gentile.

he historical beginning of the church is a doctrine that discordantly divides evangelicals. The overwhelming evidence of the New Testament is the Pentecostal origin of the church (cf. Acts 2). The fact that the church cannot be identified in the Old Testament and was still future in the teaching of Christ (cf. Matt 16:18) means the church cannot be identified with Israel but should be distinguished. Israel and the church have a different origin, character, responsibility, and function. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH Some evangelicals believe the church originated in the garden of Eden immediately after the fall of man, when God promised a Saviour and man accepted that promise in faith. 1 Most covenant theologians believe the church began with the Abrahamic Covenant. For example, Charles Hodge wrote, The Church under the New Dispensation is identical with that of the Old. It is not a new Church, but one and the same. It is the same olive-tree (Rom. xi. 16, 17). It is founded on the same covenant, the covenant made with Abraham.2 There are also evangelicals who believe the church began during the earthly ministry of Christ. Although the precise historical chronology may vary, the beginning of the church is thought to have commenced when the disciples were first called by Christ or when the Lords Supper was instituted. Representative of such a view is the following claim: The church, therefore, was established in the days of Jesus sojourn in the flesh and the work of its construction was begun with the material prepared by John the Baptist, later the twelve apostles of our Lord. . . . 3 Ultradispensationalists believe there are two churches in the New Testament; it is believed the first church was established by Christ in the Gospels and Acts, and the second church was formed with the ministry of Paul. The church established by Christ was Jewish and the church established by Paul was Gentile. In contrast to any of the beliefs that the church began in the Old Testament, during the earthly ministry of Christ, or can be separated into a Jewish and Gentile church, Matthew 16:18 declared the creation of the church as still future. At that time (summer, ca. AD 29-32), Jesus promised, I will build [oikodomeo ] my church. The Greek oikodomeo is a predictive future (active indicative) and indicates the element of time. The idea in Matthew 16:18 is the foundation of the church, not the restructuring of an existing entity. Therefore, the teaching that the church originated in the Old Testament cannot be harmonized with Matthew 16:18. In response to the other views regarding the beginning of the church, Scripture communicates that the creation of the church necessitated the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ. Christ purchased the church with His blood (Acts 20:28). There is an inseparable relation between Christs resurrection and His headship over the church (Eph 1:18-23). The ascension of Christ was required for the edification of the church. Ryrie noted,

Indeed, the beginning of the church was her formation at Pentecost. Gods plan of salvation truly began when He provided the skin of an animal to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve (Gen 3:21). However, the church is not merely another phase in salvation history.
Pauls thought is emphatic in placing stress on the necessary relation of the church to the resurrection and ascension of Christ. It is build upon His resurrection (Ephesians 1:19-20; Colossians 3:1) and its functioning is dependent on the giving of gifts to individual members-gifts that are dependent on the ascension of Christ (Eph. 4:7-12). 4

Similarly, Chafer wrote:

(a) that there could be no Church in the world-constituted as she is and distinctive in all her features-until Christs death; for her relation to that death is not a mere anticipation, but is based wholly on His finished work and she must be purified by His precious blood. (b) There could be no Church until Christ arose from the dead to provide her with resurrection life. (c) There could be no Church until He had ascended up on high to become her Head; for she is a New Creation with a new federal headship in the resurrected Christ. . . . 5

The creation of the church also required the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Spirit baptism is the work of Jesus Christ whereby the church receives and is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, which incorporates them into one body of Christ and identifies them with His death and resurrection (John 14:16-17; Rom 6:1-11; 1 Cor 6:19; 12:13). At the ascension of Christ (ca. spring, AD 30-33), the baptism of the Holy Spirit was still future (Acts 1:5). Pentecost (2:1-36) was the fulfillment of Jesus promise (cf. 11:15-16). Chafer concluded his study on this matter as follows:
(d) There could be no Church on earth until the advent of the Holy Spirit; for the most basic and fundamental reality respecting the Church is that she is a temple for the habitation of God through the Spirit. She is regenerated, baptized, and sealed by the Holy Spirit. 6

Testament. Paul said Christ is our peace, who made both groups into one . . . that in Himself He might make the two into one new man . . . and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross (Eph 2:14-16). The uniting of Jew and Gentile in the church was a mystery made known to Paul by revelation (3:3). The creation of the church was the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations; but has now been manifested to His saints (Col 1:26). In other generations [the creation of the church] was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit (Eph 3:5). The church was a mystery which for ages has been hidden in God (3:9). In Romans 16:25-26, Paul taught the newness of this revelation emphatically. Indeed, the beginning of the church was her formation at Pentecost. Gods plan of salvation truly began when He provided the skin of an animal to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve (Gen 3:21). However, the church is not merely another phase in salvation history. The nation Israel began when God made a covenant promise to Abraham (12:1-3). However, the church is not a new Israel for she was a mystery entirely. All the biblical evidence forces the conclusion that the birth of the church was at Pentecost with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, Chafer concluded as follows:
A Church without the finished work on which to stand; a Church without a resurrection position or life; a Church which is a new humanity, but lacking a federal head; and a Church without Pentecost and all that Pentecost contributes, is only a figment of theological fancy and wholly extraneous to the New Testament.

existence and that from any type or prediction no clear delineation of the Church could have been formed. As Archbishop Trench has written. The term church had its heathen, its Old Testament useas employed by the LXXand its New Testament meaning. It is to no purpose to attempt a demonstration, as some have sought to do, that the Church is defined by the use of the term in the Septuagint. The word is advanced in the New Testament to the highest degree of exaltation and honorable representation, and the revelations of the Church in the New Testament are without complication or confusion.7 THE CHURCH AND ISRAEL Interpretative views that confuse general terms like elect and saints (which apply to saints of all ages) with specific terms like church and those in Christ (which refer to believers in the church age only) are misinterpretations of Scripture. Ryrie also noted the importance of this distinction. The nature of the church is a crucial point of difference between classic, or normative, dispensationalism and other doctrinal systems. Indeed, ecclesiology, or the doctrine of the church, is the touchstone of dispensationalism (and also of pretribulationism).8 In covenant theology,9 however, the church and Israel are not distinguished biblically, but combined as the one people of God. Covenant theology teaches that the New Testament church is a continuation of those of faith within Old Testament Israel. In terms of Gods plan of salvation, they are both regarded as under the benefits of the new covenant of grace. Consequently, both the church and Israel comprise the one people of God. Berkhof described the teaching of covenant theology.
After the exodus the people of Israel were not only organized into a nation, but were also constituted the

Church of God. . . . The New Testament Church is essentially one with the Church of the old dispensation. As far as their essential nature is concerned, they both consist of true believers, and of true believers only. . . . The representation given in the preceding proceeds on the assumption that the Church existed in the old dispensation as well as in the new, and was essentially the same in both, in spite of acknowledged institutional and administrative differences. . . . The Church is essentially , as was pointed out in the preceding, the community of believers, and this community existed from the beginning of the old dispensation right down to the present time and will continue to exist on earth until the end of the world.10

Some covenant theologians see new privileges and new blessings in the New Testament church, but still regard the church and Israel as constituting the one people of God. Grudem summarized this view within covenant theology.
Therefore, even though there are certainly new privileges and new blessings that are given to the people of God in the New Testament, both the usage of the term church in Scripture and the fact that throughout Scripture God has always called his people to assemble to worship himself, indicate that it is appropriate to think of

Dispensational theology teaches the biblical distinction between Israel and the church. Both the church and Israel have special relationships with God, but they must be distinguished. The distinction between Israel and the church is the natural result of interpreting the Bible historically and grammatically (i.e. literal, plain interpretation).
the church as constituting all the people of God for all time, both Old Testament believers and New Testament believers.11

Covenant theology, which essentially is replacement theology,12 teaches that the promises made to the nation Israel in the Old Testament are now fulfilled spiritually in the New Testament church. Therefore, it is common to read covenant theologians who refer to the church as the new Israel. Clowney, a covenant theologian, explained his view:
Those who are united to Christ are heirs in him of all the promises of God. Christ fulfills the calling of Israel; those united to him are by that fact the new Israel of God (Gal. 3:29; 4:21; Rom. 15:8). The ethnicity of the new people is now spiritual rather than physical, making the bonds stronger and the brotherhood more intense (1 Pet. 1:22). Christians are not just born-again individuals, they are a family, spiritual ethnics, the new people of God in Christ.13

God, but they must be distinguished. The distinction between Israel and the church is the natural result of interpreting the Bible historically and grammatically (i.e. literal, plain interpretation). One must interpret the words of the Bible in their normal or plain meaning. The opposite would be a spiritualizing (allegorizing) of the biblical text.
Negatively stated, it has been seen that it is improper to speak of the ekklesia [church] as a building, a denomination, or a state or national church. Also, it is imperative that it be recognized that the ekklesia [church] is not to be confused with Israel or the kingdom of God. The ekklesia [church] is a unique dispensational work of God in this age.16 Use of the words Israel and church shows clearly that in the New Testament national Israel continues with her own promises and that the church is never equated with a socalled new Israel but is carefully and continually distinguished as a separate work of God in this age.17

Covenant theology began late in the sixteenth century as a reaction to the strict predestinarianism of certain reformers in France and Switzerland. Not only is covenant theology unbiblical, but also it is teaching that is foreign to the early church. What is the result of covenant theology? Showers provided an answer:
It should be noted that the Covenant Theology view of the nature of the Church leads logically to several conclusions. Israel and the Church are the same; there are no distinctive groups of saints throughout history; all saints of all periods of history are members of the Church; since saints will be on earth during the Tribulation period, the Church will be on earth during the Tribulation, and there will be one general resurrection of dead saints at one time, not more than one resurrection of saints at different times. 14

Since Israel and the church are distinct entities, the unfulfilled prophecies to Israel of both blessing and curse have not been transferred to the church. Indeed, as the cursings to Israel were fulfilled literally, so will the future restoration blessings be fulfilled literally.
[T]his doctrine of the church is a watershed in dispensationalism . . . Use of the words Israel and church shows clearly that in the New Testament national Israel continues with her own promises and that the church is never equated with a so-called new Israel but is carefully and continually distinguished as a separate work of God in this age. 18

Dispensational theology teaches the biblical distinction between Israel and the church.15 Both the church and Israel have special relationships with

CONCLUSION The Pentecostal origin of the church is a fundamental doctrine of Scripture. The church cannot be identified in the Old Testament because it was a mystery revealed in the New Testament. Furthermore, the formation of the church necessitated the death, resurrection, and ascension of

Tough economic and financial times have again hit Western economies most notably the United States. Securities markets are reeling, financial companies have been falling like flies, and almost everyonefrom bankers to government policymakershas been panicked and fearful.

s it Financial Armageddon, the start of the big bust that pitches the entire world into the final economic crisis? For some, the current times might even evoke the emotions of Luke 21:26, Mens hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Is it Financial Armageddon? We have had this query put to us several times, and not just from Christians. It is a hazardous question, and not just because it is difficult to make financial forecasts. This matter involves doctrine. Therefore, we need to tread carefully. But, we admit our bias: No, the world is likely not yet witnessing the final Financial Armageddon. Recent financial events ricocheting around the world are surely part of the process that

will eventually culminate in that prophesied time when the world will suffer many troubles. But for now, if anything, current financial down-turns represent little more than another station stop on the road to a thoroughly globalized world and a launch point for the next world-wide economic boom (should the Lord tarry, of course). We will next put this perspective into the context of a pre-tribulational, premillennial view. It points to the heavy challenges that presently face Christians who wish to set their minds and hearts on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:3). Projecting Upon the World Presently, grim news and dour economic data are spewing out in North

America as well as in other countries around the world. According to various analysts, perhaps over 1.5 million US households this year may default on their mortgages and perhaps lose their homes. As many as 10% of all US households are now upside down (meaning the house is now valued less than the outstanding mortgage) with much worse to come. The US economy at large, according to some economists, is fated for a long recession. US and other international financial institutions are likely to face losses mounting to as high as $2.7 trillion before the current credit fiasco is papered over. And, the US dollar was again plumbing new lows against the euro surely to crash much farther, so everyone thinks even while the price of commodities such as gold, oil and foodstuffs surged. Not surprisingly, there are reports of food riots around the world. To be sure, the world is currently facing a financial crisis that is most certainly the worst since the 1930s. This should not be a surprise to any commonsense observer. It indeed is a real possibility that a financial meltdown may yet get much worse in some parts of the world. But, it is not at all conclusive that the financial end is at hand nor does it spell certain doom for the majority of the worlds population. While there surely are real troubles for many households in North America, we must take a global view and not forget that there is a world financial system today that is much bigger than just America. To be sure, this system is thoroughly compromiseda post-modern, relativistic, amoral net that is in the service of the Mammon spirit. It is specifically designed to deceive and entrap. Frankly, it is surprising how few Christians are wise to this reality.

The Endtime Agenda of Money Not Ended Bible readers who understand things of the end (eschatology) know that an economic and financial control structure takes form (Revelation 13:17); a boom in (false) wealth takes place (James 5:3); and an elite group of wealthy complicitors emerges (Daniel 11:39); even as a greater part of humanity become entrapped slaves. All these processes, though perhaps not yet complete, are clearly observable today. Much worse manifestations occur in the Tribulation itself. Consider that the global trend of financialization is the bedrockthe very seedbedof the endtime power structure that underpins the last-day ecumenicism and rulership of the final False Prophet and Antichrist, respectively. The trends of globalization, globalism, financialization, corporatization etc.all of which are relatedprovide the sinew and connectedness of a last-day world that has staked its hopes and faith upon the common commercialism of mankind. (See the book, Endtime Money Snare: How to live free for an in-depth review of the role of these trends.) All of which serves to make this point: None of these outcomes can happen if the worlds financial system collapses before its time. It is a perspective that also applied to the Y2K hysteria which swept the world in the late 1990s (including, we might note, various pulpits and ministries). To recall, the Y2K mania ended up being more of a psychological crisis than an unsolvable technical problem. Some intrepid observers early on defused concerns about Y2K with the simple deduction that

computer technologies were essential to global interconnectedness and therefore were absolutely necessary to bring about a number of conditions that were clearly prophesied in Scripture. (See Dave Hunts book Y2K: A Reasoned Response to Mass Hysteria1.) As such, it was a reasonable conclusion that the world would not succumb to a Y2K-type holocaust before the prophesied Antichrist could complete his program. And while we cannot know the exact time that any crisis occurs, we at least know that these play out on a global scale inside the seven-year tribulation period (and therefore after the Rapturethe harpazo). To illustrate the role of fear being a motivating driver in this situation, in the 1990s I was managing a large global investment operation and needed to plan for the Y2K issue in various parts of the world. It was actually comforting to witness the high levels of concern at the time. Why? It ensured motivation and action to solve what was really a simple technological problem. The same consideration applies to the worlds developing financial system and the current crisis. It is fear that now hastens the actions and interventions of policymakers around the world. In the case of the United States, there already have been new and unprecedented responses to current financial troubles. It is likely that as a result, more governmental controls will be introduced. This also stands to be true on a global scale. Rapture Comes First Consider this perspective: If one believes that the current financial meltdown is the very start of the global financial and economic bust, then you may have missed the Rapture. The simple point here is that were we now witnessing the final financial meltdownwhich is to oc24

cur in the Tribulation Periodby definition, the Rapture would already have occurred. That is not the case (at least, at the time of this writing). Of course, saying this does not at all deny the imminency of the Rapture, a doctrine we consider as inviolable. The fact that we are even considering this question should quicken our hopes to the promise of His coming very soon! Otherwise, how would it be possible for the False Prophet to implement the controlled conditions of buying and selling (Revelation 13:7)? Therefore, what is being postulated here is that the final world-spanning financial crisis cannot occur until well into the Tribulation periodprobably not until its mid-point. Before that time (and today), smaller financial crises will occur, but these will all be survivable and play a necessary role in prodding further global commercial and monetary convergence. In that context, the present financial tremors should be considered smaller in scope. As it happens, the direct impact of the credit system breakdowns of late are largely confined to the Western nations. That is not to say that there will not be reverberations around the world. Yet, once this period has passed, some countries will emerge much weakened, and others will be in a more powerful position. (Likely, the United States will have lost some strength and authority). However, the key thing to see is that world will have moved to a more centralized, globally-coordinated state. What we are witnessing today is simply part of the pattern of that long-continuing process. The great financial fears (as in the Y2K saga) now hasten the actions of policymakers and central banks around the

globe. They are fighting the current financial crisis tooth and nail, using every possible trick of financial alchemy in their toolkit. As this takes place, the seeds for the next financial boom are being laid the next stage of globalization and world deception. Should the Lord tarry, at least one more inflationary world boom will begin, though there is no telling how soon this might occur. Near the peak of one of these booms (if not the next one) may be the time when as ye think not (Matthew 24:44) that the Lord may come ... when people are eating, drinking, marrying (Luke 17:27). Of course, we must not speculate on the exact timing as we are told three times that we are not to know the day nor the hour (Mark 13:32; Matthew 24:36; 25:13). However, it is also true that the Lords appearance will not be in the midst of a world-spanning crisis. It is the Antichrist and the False Prophet that are likely to seek their advantage during that time. More Globalization Ahead? If past trends are any guide, we should expect the next economic boom to be world scale, enveloping the entirety of all nations; ever more firmly entrenching mankind in the last-day money snare the systemic Babylonian colossus of Bible prophecy. It could be argued that over 60% of the worlds population are yet only marginal participants in the worlds emerging commercial structure. While there have been great strides to date in this respect, much more globalization could lie ahead. But before anyone might get elated about this prospect, lets ground our perspective in a Dispensationalist, pre-Tribulational view. This is an important discussion, as there are many Christians today who take delight in the belief that they will not suffer in any troubles of the

Tribulation period particularly financial losses. Why? Because their hearts and affections are entirely ensnared in materialism and greed right now. Doing so, they show themselves to be earth dwellers.2 In response, we remind ourselves of these three points: Above all, the Lords return is imminent. Whatever the theories or speculations, we could be with Him at any time and our sojourn upon earth completed. We would have no more chance to set things right to shed our idolatries and worldliness. The Bema Seat lies ahead. Secondly, certainty about the specific time of future events in this present dispensation has not been given to man. We can know the general season and such things as the destination point of the path upon which the world is traveling, but we are not given the hour or the day. This means that even though we may theorize that another global economic cycle may be underway at some point and that the final big financial meltdown need wait until the Tribulation, these give no assurances of anything near-term. With respect to the worlds headlong rush into the last days super-religion the merging of God and Mammonwe can be sure of its occurrence. The world is on a path to destruction morally, economically and spiritually. We have the more sure word of prophesy on this point. On this road, there are serious, scary financial tremors (also wars, pestilences, earthquakes etc.) through which many people (greedy, nave or otherwise) will suffer or profit greatly. This brings us to the third and final point. Deception and corruption remain the mode of the worlds developing systems. The successive economic booms of

qualify for that home going. Who today, living during our evil, false-gospel times, is untainted and able to be fully separate from the world ... in other words, ready to face the Bema Seat and likely to hear Well done, good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:21)? We surely must rely upon grace and His promises. Thankfully, people will come to Christ during the Tribulation period. However, there is a big difference between following Christ out of last minute fear (in the Tribulation period) versus a spirit of separation and devotion while waiting for His appearance at the Rapture at a time that the world is partying, eating, drinking and marrying. Were there no Rapture and the Church were to enter the Tribulation period, consider then that this would require no watchfulness, no preparedness, nor a full supply of oil for the lamp. Since the start of the Tribulation period is clearly marked by the Antichrists peace deal with Israel, Christians would then know that the end of the age is clearly measured, shortly to tick down to its close within a seven year period. Those who are in this scenario would not merit much reward in comparison with those who are prepared for the Rapture in the hour that we know not. Therefore, Pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man (Luke 21:36). MC

the world the temptations of the rising endtime apparition of great wealth or the deceitfulness of wealth (Matthew 13:22) the greater material comforts or the worries of this life the anxieties of life (Luke 21:34) the ever ensnaring end-time money trap they all play upon the affections of Christians. Who then can sustain such an assault and still stand ready at all times for His coming? Thoughts to Ponder It is common to encounter ridicule on the Bibles teaching on the Rapture. Supposedly, it is soft-headed Christians who have dreamt up this theory, so as be able to escape tough times. Indeed, it is true there are many Christians who think the Rapture is their easy escape route. However, just because many Christians may misinterpret the concept of the Rapture, it does not invalidate Scripture. When one reviews the character of the people who were raptured in the Old Testament (Enoch and Elijah perhaps also Moses) one can legitimately wonder how many people today, living in the present evil times, are worthy to be raptured. Most so-called Christians live and behave as earth dwellers who are very attached to this world. If there is any error about the [] blessed hope-the glorious appearing (Titus 2:13), it may be how remarkably few would

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all (1 Corinthians 12:4-6).

he fact that the church of Jesus Christ is diverse need not to be debated. But note carefully these three verses, which reveal the fullness of the Word of God, the Spirit of the Lord (the Son), and God (the Father). Here we have the Trinity at work in the body of Christ, which worketh all in all. Then comes an important message, But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7). Note the word given. This is important. Then verses 8-10 list 9 specific gifts, but they too are given by the Spirit. Then verse 11 summarizes: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. This important statement needs to be highlighted, as he will. Thus, we dont pray for the gifts, we dont attempt to receive these gifts, but we are at His ser-

vice and He will give according as he will. We must not fail to also read verse 13: For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. That is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, baptized into one body. The true Church is the Body of Christ, and we must never allow the error to come into our thoughts that certain denominations, independent churches, or (in our case) the missionary organization Midnight Call, somehow represents the fullness of the Body of Christ. Only to the extent we have placed ourselves into the service of our Master will He grant us to be participants in the building of His Church. Again, it is not we who built His Church because Jesus

Himself stated, I will build my church (Matthew 16:18). However, it is evident from Scripture that our Lord delights in His servants who do His work and are His witnesses. Each person born again of His Spirit is part of His body, however, diverse he or she may appear outwardly. But spiritually, in Him we are perfectly one. In the world we hear the old slogans of ancient Rome, United we stand, divided we fall, or the new Roman (European Union) motto, United in diversity. The difference between these and many other unity seeking attempts and the Church of Jesus Christ lies in the fact that we are actually united in one person who worketh all in all, or as verse 27 says, ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. We do not have to strive for unity as the world does, and so many religions do likewise, but we work from the already achieved unity of Christ towards those who do not belong to this unity with the clear goal to bring them in. Of the Church, the opposite of the Roman motto can be said, namely, diverse in appearance, but united in Him. Midnight Call Ministries, founded in 1955, has experienced this wonderful perfect unity in the Lord. While we have worked on various continents in many different languages, having to deal with innumerable cultures and customs, we are nevertheless one in Him. Over and again, we have experienced that true believers in Christ always look in one direction, Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). The closer we come to Him, the closer we come to each other. This is the unity that our Lord established, and it is the

only unity that counts in the Church of Jesus Christ.

Dear Prayer Partner, Greetings to you in the name of our soon coming Lord. Once again I greet you from the worlds largest democratic nation, India. I thank those of you who responded to last months e-newsletter promising to pray for the ministry. Prayer mobilization from more recipients of this newsletter is urgently needed as we press forward in the work the Lord has entrusted us with. Thank you for your continual partnership through your prayers and regular financial support. Some of you have been supporting the work with monthly donations, and others have been sending donations occasionally. We express our deep gratitude to every one of you and praise God for the special love and concern you have for our ministry. We continue to value your partnership with us in the coming years. Prayer Mobilization: Special prayers are needed for the safety of Christians in India as most of them face physical attacks from non-Christians for simply exercising their Christian faith. The native missionaries, evangelists and pastors often face harassment, physical abuse and threats accusing them of practicing forceful conversion. Three Indian states have passed the anti-conversion law. In one of these states, if a person expresses his desire to be baptized (even from a Christian family), he has to file an application for baptism with the government official six months prior to his baptism! While foreigners are strictly prohibited from preaching in the public meetings, Indian preachers are also hindered by violence from the nonChristians.

Missions Update

The present ongoing situation calls for prayer mobilization. I encourage you to share these prayer needs in your churches, prayer groups etc. We will be happy to share some prayer requests with you if you are burdened to pray for the situation in India. Hospital Ministry: Our missionary is faithful in visiting the hospital to minister to the patients. Some of the hospital staff have begun to confide in our missionary and seek counseling and prayer from him. In addition to the patients, the staff, the patients family members, friends and relatives also look up to our missionary for prayer, encouragement and counsel as they go through anxious moments during the hospitalization of their loved ones. Though the primary purpose of appointing a medical missionary is for the ministry among the patients, the Lord opened the doors for us to minister to the hospital staff and the relatives of the patients as well. We praise God for this open door. Please pray that the Lord would give wisdom to our missionary as these groups of people are touched with the Gospel, encouragement and counsel. The Position of Our Staff: Right now we are going through acute financial struggle. The exchange rate of the dollar, which was RS 48 a few years ago, now stands at only RS 39! The depreciation of the dollar has directly affected our ministry severely. Many of the Indian donors who work for American companies in India are also affected. As a result, our Indian donors are irregular in fulfilling their financial commitments. This makes it very difficult both for the staff and the ministry. On the other hand, last month the government announced the steep raise of the salaries of their employees in India by 50% to 60%! This announcement immediately

pushed up the prices of groceries and other essential goods. You can imagine the financial plight of all those who are in full-time ministry. I request you to kindly pray the Lord will perform a mir-

his is not a question, it is a declaration. While doing research in the medical library of one of our prestigious teaching hospitals, I came across a newsletter entitled, Worst Pills, Best Pills (January 2008). The article pointed out that Britain had banned Darvocet in 2008. But, it was a phased out ban, as Darvocet has addictive qualities, and patients should not abruptly stop taking it because they may develop withdrawal symptoms. It should also be done under medical supervision. The complete ban became effective in January 2008. Darvocet is a combination of Darvon (propoxyphene), and acetaminophen, best known as Tylenol. The culprit here is Darvon, not acetaminophen. When Darvon was first brought on the market in 1957 as a new pain reliever, it was advertised as not being addictive. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) went along with this false advertising even though the drug chemically resembled certain narcotic painkillers. By the 1970s, Darvon was finally recognized as having addiction risks similar to codeine and arbitrates, and more than 1,000 people died from overdoses. Isnt the FDA supposed to protect us from this? The newsletter further noted that the British health authorities said the drug was banned because each year there were 300 to 400 fatalities following deliberate or accidental overdoses involving propoxyphene and acetaminophen, in England and Wales alone. The British health authorities said the drugs effectiveness was poorly established and the risk of toxicity in overdose, both accidental and deliberate, was unacceptable. Also, Darvocet is no more effective than taking two aspirins. The newsletter adds that the death numbers are even higher. There has been 2,500 accidental deaths reported

in association with propoxyphene in the U.S. since 1981. Note this figure is for accidental death only, not total deaths. In addition, studies have shown that Darvon, when broken down in the body, is converted into a compound that is toxic to the heart. The drug also has a low margin of safety, meaning that the recommended dose is very close to a slightly higher dangerous dose. Thus, a patient who takes the recommended dose and doesnt get the pain relief he or she expects, may take an extra dose and then get toxic effects. This drug is extremely risky and shouldnt even be on the market. Besides, it cost 10 times more than ordinary aspirin. When Darvon was introduced in 1957, it was considered a breakthrough for pain relief, but since then, many other pain relievers such as Motrin, Aleve, etc., have been found to be more effective and much safer than Darvon. So, the drug makes less sense today than it did before. I know it takes millions of dollars and years of research and testing to bring a new drug to market, so the drug manufacturers are a necessary evil; otherwise, health improvement would stagnate. But, the drug companies are not satisfied with making millions in profits, but insist on making billions, even if it means putting the public at risk. Dont rely on the FDA to protect you unless youre a pharmaceutical company. Patient, beware! The medicines you are taking may be injurious to your health. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26). Swiss ministers and financiers are striving to reassure markets and citizens there is no banking crisis even as the once-mighty UBS totters after losing billions of dollars in subprime exposure.
UBS, the country's biggest bank and once a byword for safe, reliable investments, now has the dubious distinction of being the world's biggest subprime loser after fresh writedowns this week drove its total damage to 37.4 billion dollars (24 billion euros). But politicians and senior banking officials have been at pains to stress that UBS' woes are not symptomatic of a wider malaise affecting the whole financial system. Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz has repeatedly said in recent weeks that there is no need to panic despite the vast losses at UBS and similarif less extensivewritedowns at rival Credit Suisse. Pope Benedict XVI set the founder of the Knights of Columbus, one of the largest groups for Catholic laity, on the path to possible beatification and sainthood.
The pope recognized the heroic virtues of the Rev. Michael J. McGivney, who in 1882 created a fraternal society for Catholic men who suffered discrimination because of their religion and immigrant origins. McGivney was a 29-year-old assistant pastor at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Conn., when he founded the group, which now has 1.7 million members and in 2006 collected nearly $144 million in contributions for charity. The church must certify a miracle performed through McGivney's Intercession before beatification, which is the last formal step before the sainthood process can begin. Founded in the United States in 1882, it is named in honor of Christopher Columbus and dedicated to the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Morocco's government said it had dismantled a terrorist network that plotted to assassinate cabinet ministers and members of the Moroccan Jewish community.
Authorities believe the net work has links to al-Qaeda and local terror groups, the official MAP news agency said. A total of 32 people were arrested in sweeps, Moroccan newspapers said. Morocco also banned an Islamist party, Al Badil Al Hadari, because some members were linked to the network, the Interior Ministry said. The network raised money through holdups, selling stolen goods, and taking contributions from its members, the ministry said. The group had plotted to assassinate cabinet ministers, army officers, and members of the Jewish community, the ministry said. Only a few thousand Jews still live in the kingdom; many have emigrated to Israel and elsewhere.

Verse 29 continues: And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. When will this division of sinners and saints take place? At the White Throne Judgment, the Judgment Seat of Christ or the Judgment of the Nations at Christs Second Advent? Also, where will this judgment take place? I am not aware that a judgment other than the Judgment of Nations will occur where the saints and the sinners will be judged together. In Psalms 1:5, Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sin-

Answer: In Luke 16:23 we read, And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Only the rich man saw Abraham and Lazarus, but there is no record of Lazarus seeing the rich man. One of the most horrendous things for a lost person will be the realization that he could have been saved, but now he is lost for all eternity. The Judgment Seat of Christ is reserved for the believer. Our work while on earth will be manifest, and we will either receive a reward or suffer loss (see 1 Corinthians 3:13-15). The Great White Throne is the place of judgment for the lost. Note that there is no Christ, no Lamb of God, no sacrifice present; its eternal condemnation.

I appreciate your comments about her writing and her using descriptive character traits. To me, this did not take away the message of the Scripture, but only seemed to enforce it. For someone having only a 3rd grade education and writing a stack of

books from the floor to the ceiling, while upholding Jesus and the Scriptures and writing on health, she has been a blessing to me. When I read her writings I want to go back to the Bible and read it again and again. It seems to become a living book and I love it more and more. Ellen White made the statement that if the Bible had been studied as we should have, her writings would never have been written. As Jesus said, I have many things to say tunto you, but ye cannot bear them now (John 16:12). I guess well be learning new things throughout eternity. As we study the Bible we learn new things everyday. For me what Ellen White wrote in the chapter on Carmel makes the whole scene come to life. If I were one of the priests of Baal, deceptive as they were, I would certainly try to light that fire anyway I could. Apparently Elijah knew that too and was watching that that didnt happen. Describing something like that for me makes the scene more real. Hopefully youll be able to read other chapters in the book.
