T
he last chapter of the book of
Zechariah may be titled Sum-
mary of Judgment and Salva-
tion. This chapter consists
exclusively of the Lord speaking. We
read in the beginning of the book the
statement, ...came the word of the Lord
unto Zechariah. Then follows the eight vi-
sions, which conclude with chapter 6. Be-
ginning with chapter 7, verse 5, its the
Lord speaking all the way through the end
of the book.
Let us now take a closer look at chapter
14:1.
What spoil is being divided, and to
whom? Here I will pass on how Menge
translates this: Know assuredly a day of the
Lord is to come when the spoil they took
from you will be divided in your midst.
This is a very powerful statement. In
the first place, thy spoil is the intellec-
tual capacity of the Jew, which was stolen
from them throughout the times of the
Gentiles; thats about 2,600 years.
Moses prophesied what would tran-
spire if Israel was to disobey the com-
mandment of the Lord:
Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress
them, but shalt neither drink of the wine,
nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall
eat them. Thou shalt have olive trees
throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt
not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine
olive shall cast his fruit. Thou shalt beget
sons and daughters, but thou shalt not
enjoy them; for they shall go into captiv-
ity. All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall
the locust consume. The stranger that is
within thee shall get up above thee very
high; and thou shalt come down very low.
He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not
lend to him: he shall be the head, and
thou shalt be the tail (Deuteronomy
28:39-44).

OUR TASK
Midnight Call Ministries is a nonprofit missionary organization,
dedicated to proclaiming the entire Bible as the unfailing and eternal
written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the unerring
guide for the Christian faith.
The object of Midnight Call is to call people everywhere to Christ,
to proclaim the Second Coming of Christ, to prepare Christians for
His coming, and to uphold the faith and warn of false doctrines.
Midnight Call magazine is available in twelve languages. All work
done through radio, literature and missionaries is supported entirely
by the gifts and free will offerings of Gods people.
STATEMENT OF FAITH
WE BELIEVE in the divine inspiration of the whole Bible and there-
with the infallibility of the Holy Scripture, which is Gods Word, and
in the eternal Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
WE BELIEVE Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was conceived of the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, and shed His
blood to save mankind. He died and arose bodily the third day and
later ascended into heaven.
WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ died in the place of each
individual sinner and that all who believe in Him as their personal
Savior are justified through His shed blood and have become
children of God.
WE BELIEVE that Israel is Gods chosen people, and that the
restoration of the Jews to their own land is the fulfillment of the
Word of God.
WE BELIEVE in the pretribulational appearance of Jesus Christ for
the Rapture of His Church (all born again believers).
WE BELIEVE in the immortality of our souls and the resurrection of
our bodies, and in the resurrection of the just and the unjust, the
everlasting blessedness of the saved and the everlasting punishment of
the lost.

The blessings of the Lord are expressed here in the abundance of har-
vest. That was the measurement of riches in olden days. Note verse 44:
the heathen will lend to the Jew, and the heathen shall be the head and
the Jew shall be the tail. That is the exact opposite of what God had
promised through Moses earlier: For the LORD thy God blesseth thee,
as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou
shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall
not reign over thee (Deuteronomy 15:6).
There is an abundance of documentation available through the inter-
net, clearly showing that the Jews have been persecuted severely for over
2 millenniums.
Look at todays world. Who are the greatest contributors toward the
well being of humanity? The answer is indisputable: the Jew. Take a
glance at the recipients of the internationally recognized Nobel Prize,
and you will find a lopsided number of Jews who have won. Yet from
Russia to Spain, from Britain to Italy, the Jews have been persecuted.
Even in relatively recent times, during the Second World War, six mil-
lion Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazi regime under Adolf
Hitler of Germany. Study German history, and you will find that the Jews
were one of the most significant contributors toward Germanys leading
position in the world in the scientific field. The Jews were robbed of
their reward.
Even in the new colonial countries, Jews were blatantly discriminated
against. In plain words, the nations robbed you: now its payback time.
For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city
shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half
of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people
shall not be cut off from the city (verse 2). Most Bible scholars place
this, including most unfulfilled prophetic events, in the time period of
the Great Tribulation. I, for one, dont. The nations of the world, begin-
ning with Babylon, have gathered against Jerusalem for the past 2,600
years. The nations did destroy Jerusalem, rifle the houses, ravish the
women, and lead many Jews captive. This can be documented in the
time span of the Gentiles; that is, beginning with Babylon until our
time.
Again, we must remind ourselves that God is speaking from heavenly
perspectives. When He utters His voice, it is eternal. There is no time
and space in the heavenly realm; the past, the present and the future are
all one.
Here is an example: A respected historian, James Carroll, is quoted in
Jews and Judaism, listed under Anti-Semitism in Wikipedia, Jews ac-
counted for 10% of the total population of the Roman Empire. By that
ratio, if other factors such as pogroms and conversions had not inter-
vened, there would be 200 million Jews in the world today, instead of
something like 13 million.
When we read Scripture and compare it with historical facts, then we
must come to the conclusion that Israel has received from the Lords
E D I T O R S N O T E
hand double punishment for their sins. That is why we who believe in
Jesus Christ as our Lord are admonished to comfort Israel: Comfort ye,
comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to
Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her
iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORDS hand double
for all her sins (Isaiah 40:1-2).
If, however, we place this verse in the framework of the seven-year
tribulation, then it is yet to come.
Let us now look at this verse from a logical standpoint, although
logic is not decisive in understanding Bible prophecy. Nevertheless, lets
assume all the nations of the world come against Jerusalem. At this
time, it is the United States that has the largest military force. As a mat-
ter of fact, the U.S. spends more on defense than the rest of the world
put together. Based on that fact, we must come to the conclusion that
the American military would lead the nations of the world to encircle
Jerusalem with weapons of war, would steal everything they could find
in the houses in Jerusalem, and then rape the women and take the rest
prisoners, leading them into captivity. That is exactly what verse 2 says.
To reemphasize this fact, lets re-read verse 2: For I will gather all na-
tions against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the
houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go
forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off
from the city.
We know all too well that it is against the Geneva Convention, so-
called International Law, to steal private property or to rape women dur-
ing a military conflict. Although this does happen, it is the exception
and not the rule of operation. Therefore, if we decide this to be literally
in the future during the time of the Great Tribulation, then we must ac-
knowledge such a scenario.
Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as
when he fought in the day of battle (verse 3). Here we have the Lord in-
tervening. He acts on behalf of Israel.
We are reminded here of the Exodus, when Israel moved out of Egypt
toward the Promised Land. They stood before the Red Sea, and behind
them came Pharaohs chosen army to recapture them, leading Israel back
into bondage. Let us carefully read Exodus 14:13: And Moses said unto
the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD,
which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen
to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
Over and again we read in Israels history that it was God who fought
on their behalf. He has done so in the past, He is doing it today, and that
is exactly what God will do on that certain day.
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which
is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in
the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be
a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the
north, and half of it toward the south (verse 4).

We already mentioned that these words come directly from God out of
heaven, and Zechariah writes them down for us. I venture to say that it is
an error to attempt to read prophecy chronologically. In this case, it is
clearly illustrated. In verse 3, the Lord fights for Israel, but then in verse
4, He comes to Israel. If we are to understand that chronologically and in-
tellectually, we would say the opposite: He must come first and then fight
for Israel.
What we do know is that when His feet touch the Mount of Olives,
topographical changes will take place. The Mount of Olives will split
from the East to the West, causing a mountain in the North and in the
South, and subsequently, create a large rift.
What is the purpose? And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains;
for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee,
like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of
Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee
(verse 5).
We all know that the Lords feet stood on the Mount of Olives when He
ascended into heaven, and the message of the angel made it clear that He
will return likewise. This means, His feet shall stand on the Mount of
Olives again. That has not taken place, nor has the Mount of Olives split
in half yet; therefore, the words, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from be-
fore the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah are yet to come.
Where will they flee? The Bible does not give us an answer; thus, we
should not speculate. However, based on Revelation chapter 11, we know
that God will intervene supernaturally. This is recorded in Revelation
12:6: And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place
prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred
and threescore days. Furthermore, this is confirmed in verse 14: And to
the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into
the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and
times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. We know that this
woman is Israel, for she brought forth a man child who was to rule all na-
tions with a rod of iron. Unmistakably, this is Jesus the Lord returning to
the Mount of Olives, making an end of the Antichrist system and estab-
lishing His 1,000 Year Kingdom of Peace. It will not be ruled by weapons
of war, but by the Lord Himself, who will strictly implement His law,
with a rod of iron.
This eventthe return of Christ on the Mount of Oliveswill be a
very unique day, And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall
not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the
LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it
shall be light (Zechariah 14:6-7). Words apparently are not sufficient to
describe what will happen, because suddenly light is no longer light, and
dark is no longer dark. It is neither a day nor a night; it is something we
dont know. It is only known to the Lord.
Next, we come to the second important result caused by the Lords ap-
pearance on the Mount of Olives. The first served as an escape, ye shall

flee. The second result will make Jerusalem a harbor city, And it shall
be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of
them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in
summer and in winter shall it be (Zechariah 14:8).
For a better understanding, lets read the Tenakh: In that day, fresh
water shall flow from Jerusalem, part of it to the Eastern Sea and part
to the Western Sea, throughout the summer and winter (verse 8). Wa-
ter from the Mediterranean will flow into the Dead Sea.
The prophet Ezekiel has more to say about this topographical
change in chapter 47, verses 8-9: Then said he unto me, These waters
issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go
into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be
healed. And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which
moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall
be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come
thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the
river cometh. In plain words, the Dead Sea shall come to life.
And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall
there be one LORD, and his name one (Zechariah 14:9). This is the
fulfillment of the repeated promises that God shall dwell with man.
Thats the time when we will see what Jesus said, He that hath seen
me hath seen the Father, or as is written in Ephesians 4:5-6: One
Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above
all, and through all, and in you all.
Contrary to mans desire to destroy Jerusalem, as we have seen in
verse 2, the Lord now declares Jerusalem untouchable: All the land
shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem:
and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamins
gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the
tower of Hananeel unto the kings winepresses. And men shall dwell in
it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be
safely inhabited (verses 10-11). The Lord is in control, He is King
over all the earth, and Jerusalem is now secure. We may safely say this
is the beginning of the 1,000 Year Kingdom of Peace for Israel. That is
important to emphasize, because the nations and individual people
will yet experience the Lords punishing judgment: And this shall be
the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have
fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they
stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes,
and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth (verse 12).
There are several theories of interpretation, one of which is a nu-
clear war. However, that does not stand because we are now dealing
with the judgment of God. Here I like to distinguish between two types
of judgment. The first is during the Great Tribulation at the opening of
the six seals, which indicates clearly that this judgment is not man-
made, but comes from heaven: And the kings of the earth, and the
great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty

men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the
dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and
rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the
throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb (Revelation 6:15-16). This
documents clearly that the people of the world know from where the
judgment comes because of the statement, hide us from the face of
him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.
This is not the Battle of Armageddon, nor some type of third, fourth,
or fifth world war or nuclear explosions, but this is direct judgment
from God in heaven.
The second type of judgment upon earth is specifically directed to-
ward those who oppose Jerusalem, and we must emphasize that that in-
cludes the entire world.
Even today, actually for the first time in history, we see all the nations
of the world are unitedly gathered against Jerusalem. This needs expla-
nation. After all, no nation, not even Iran, is gathered physically and lit-
erally with military power with the intention to fight against Jerusalem
today, much less the nations of the European world. But we cannot deny
that all nations, without exception, agree upon one thing: namely, that
Jerusalem should not be the undivided capital of the State of Israel.
That fact qualifies all nations of the world as enemies of Jerusalem; sub-
sequently, the statement in verse 2, I will gather all nations against
Jerusalem to battle, is a very precise, up-to-date statement.
Based on these facts, we must come to the conclusion that when the
Messiah comes to Israel, destroys the power of the enemy and sets up
the 1,000 Year Kingdom of Peace, it will not be automatically trans-
ferred to the nations of the world. They will first have to be judged.
We have more information in the book of Ezekiel: Behold, therefore
I am against thee, and against thy rivers, and I will make the land of
Egypt utterly waste and desolate, from the tower of Syene even unto the
border of Ethiopia. No foot of man shall pass through it, nor foot of
beast shall pass through it, neither shall it be inhabited forty years. And
I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that
are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be
desolate forty years: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations,
and will disperse them through the countries. Yet thus saith the Lord
GOD; At the end of forty years will I gather the Egyptians from the peo-
ple whither they were scattered (Ezekiel 29:10-13).
At the end of the judgment, Egypt shall know the God of Israel and
will enjoy the same peace as Israel.
During those days, there will be utter confusion among the nations of
the world, caused by the Lord Himself, as revealed in Zechariah 14:13:
And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the
LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the
hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his
neighbour. Such enemy self-destruction is documented in Scripture;
for example, in Ezekiel 38:21: And I will call for a sword against him
NOVEMBER 2010 9
The words HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD were reserved for the High
Priest. It was part of his consecration to the Lord. We read in Exodus
28:36: And thou shalt make a plate of pure gold, and grave upon it, like
the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD. Here in Zechariah,
holiness unto the Lord is engraved upon the bells of the horses. That
means there is a continuous ringing of the bells, reminding even the
horses, holiness unto the Lord. We may simply say this is applicable to
the industrial world at that time.
Even all the utensils in Jerusalem and Judah come under the banner of
HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD. For the first time, there is going to be
perfect Old Testament sacrifice unto the Lord God of heaven.
Jerusalem will then exclude everything that is foreign; nothing that
does not bear the words, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD will enter
therein.
We have a confirmation in the New Testament: And there shall in no
wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh
abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lambs
book of life (Revelation 21:27).
Now, for the first time in Israels history, the words found in Deuteron-
omy 14:2 will be fulfilled: For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy
God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself,
above all the nations that are upon the earth.
The message of the book of Zechariah is addressed to the entire world.
During the times of the Gentiles, approximately 2,600 years, the world
collectively failed to respect the blessings and the honor God gave to the
Jews in an unconditional covenant. The Jews have been accursed. They
were despised, rejected, persecuted, and too often killed. That is why in
the beginning of the book of Zechariah we read, And I am very sore dis-
pleased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased,
and they helped forward the affliction (Zechariah 1:15).
For the last 2,000 years, the Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ
the Lord has been proclaimed all over the world, but only a small rem-
nant have accepted the message, the message of the cross, the message
of death. The overwhelming majority within Churchianity continues to
proclaim the benefits of the flesh through the Gospel, but that is a par-
tial gospel; it is definitely not the whole Gospel, which clearly states,
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21). The
message of the Gospel says that I cannot please God under any circum-
stances, that I must die to self and be born again into a new creature,
and that this new creature in Christ is to rule my old nature until the
day I die. That is the good news, the Gospel of salvation, the Gospel of
eternity.
For Israel, as we have seen throughout this book, judgment is pro-
claimed as well. The reason? Because The LORD hath been sore dis-
pleased with your fathers (Zechariah 1:2). But Israels 2,600 year
period of judgment will end in absolute and unconditional, HOLINESS
UNTO THE LORD.

sion, Christ Jesus; who was faithful to him that
appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his
house. For this man was counted worthy of more
glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded
the house hath more honour than the house. For
every house is builded by some man; but he that
built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful
in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of
those things which were to be spoken after; but
Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are
we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing
of the hope firm unto the end.
Called to Glory
In this text, we find the statement that Jesus Christ
was counted worthy of more glory than Moses. The
Bible speaks with all clarity of the fact that Jesus is
the greatest, greater than the angels, greater than
Moses, greater than Aaron, greater than Joshua,
greater than David, greater than Jonah, greater than
Solomon, etc. Let us consider the argument of the
writer to the Hebrews, why Jesus was counted wor-
thy of more glory than Moses, Wherefore, holy
brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider
the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ
Jesus (Hebrews 3:1).
First, it is said here that we, the Church of Jesus
Christ, are holy, sanctified. Chapter 2 of the letter to

the Hebrews speaks of the fact that Jesus is the one
who sanctifies, and that the Church, the believers in
Christ, are sanctified through Him (verse 11). So it
is consequently right to call us holy in the Scrip-
tures. Moreover, it says in Hebrews 10:14, For by
one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are
sanctified. We should not boast of this, for we do
not deserve it; this fact should rather humble us and
make us thankful. In all our requests and petitions,
we should never forget to give thanks!
Hebrews 3:1 calls us further, partakers of the
heavenly calling. Gods children are chosen, set
apart and destined for glory. They have a goal before
their eyes that cannot be expressed in words. A
mountaineer has the peak before his eyes, whether
he will ever reach it or not. Those who belong to the
Church of Jesus Christ, however, the foundation of
which is Jesus Christ, have the cross of Calvary be-
fore their eyes. Not only do they have the cross be-
fore their eyes, but also they will reach the goal of
indescribable and eternal glory, because God has
called them to this irrevocably in and through His
Son, Jesus Christ. Just as the heavenly Father in His
sovereignty once set apart the people of Israel for
Himself, so we believers out of the Gentiles have be-
come partakers of this heritage, on the grounds of
the sovereign will of God (compare, for instance,
Ephesians 3 and Galatians 3).
In conclusion, it says in Hebrews 3:1, con-
sider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession,
Christ Jesus. Was the Lord Jesus also an apostle?
Yes, because apostle can be translated as ambas-
sador or messenger. Jesus Christ was sent out by His
Father with the message of reconciling the lost
world with the heavenly Father. Jesus is therefore an
ambassador of the heavenly Father, and a messenger
to the whole world (cf. John 17:18). In particular, of
course, for His Church, to whom He had proclaimed
and revealed the Father-God. Jesus Christ is also the
reason for, i.e. the foundation of, the Church (cf.
1 Corinthians 3:11-15). Without Jesus, there would
be no Church. Jesus is the cornerstone of the
Church, built upon the foundation of the apos-
tles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the
chief corner stone (Ephesians 2:20). Jesus is also
the firstborn of the Church (Romans 8:29) and its
head, And hath put all things under his feet, and
gave him to be the head over all things to the
church, which is his body, the fullness of him that
filleth all in all (Ephesians 1:22-23, see also 4:15).
Further, Jesus is called the High Priest of our
profession. And Jesus is indeed the true High Priest
who represents His Church, i.e. His own, before the
heavenly Father. Seeing then that we have a great
high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the
Son of God, let us hold fast our profession (He-
brews 4:14). Not only did Jesus, like the high priest
under the old covenant, enter through the curtain
into the Holy of Holies once a year, but He also
passed into the heavens. At His death on the cross,
the curtain was torn in two (cf. Luke 23:44-46),
which separated the Holy of Holies from the sanctu-
ary. Now the Son of God sits at the right hand of the
Majesty on high and intercedes for us, not just once

a year, but every day anew. Through His once and
for all and not to be repeated sacrifice, the Son of
God atoned for our sin with His own blood. We read
in Hebrews 9:11-12, But Christ being come an high
priest of good things to come, by a greater and more
perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to
say, not of this building; neither by the blood of
goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in
once into the holy place, having obtained eternal re-
demption for us.
JesusGreater than Moses or Aaron
As an apostle or ambassador, Jesus speaks to us in
the name of the Father, and has proclaimed and re-
vealed Him to us. As High Priest, the Son of God, Je-
sus Christ, speaks to the Father in the name of His
Church. Jesus Christ is the only mediator between
God the Father and man, for both sides, For there
is one God, and one mediator between God and
men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ran-
som for all (1 Timothy 2:5-6). Jesus as an apostle is
the mediator between the Father and His Church,
and as the High Priest of His Church He represents
it before the Father.
When Jesus is described as an apostle in Hebrews
3:1, then this is also a reference to Moses and Aaron.
The first high priest to be instated by God was
Aaron. Jesus is called the true and perfect High
Priest, however, and is therewith higher, i.e. greater,
than Aaron. Jesus is the fulfillment of Aaron and the
whole priesthood.
Moses was Gods ambassador. As Gods speaker
(apostle), he was given the law and brought it to the
people. Moses was the mediator of the old covenant,
and to whom God spoke as to no other man, And
when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the
congregation to speak with him, then he heard the
voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy
seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from be-
tween the two cherubims: and he spake unto him
(Numbers 7:89). My servant Moses is not so, who
is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak
mouth to mouth, even apparently (Numbers 12:7-
8). The text in Hebrews 3:2 refers to this exact text
when it says of Jesus, Who was faithful to him that
appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his
house.
Moses doubtless had a very important place; he
is honored by all three monotheistic world religions.
Yet Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses (He-
brews 3:3). Why? Just as Moses was faithful over
the whole house of Israel and the Tabernacle, so or
far more Jesus has been put over His Church. Moses
interceded for the people of Israel, even when they
repeatedly fell into sin, and even when they made a
golden calf, worshiped it and sacrificed to it. With
this disobedience and idolatry, Israel incurred the
wrath of God, but Moses was faithful to his people,
and interceded as their mediator before the almighty
and holy God (cf. Exodus 32:7-14). And like Moses,
no, far more, Jesus is and remains faithful to His
Church, forever and ever! God will not let go of any-
one who has become a child of God by receiving Je-
sus Christ as his Lord and Savior and taken Him
into his heart in His function as the substitutionary
Lamb of Calvary (John 10:27-29).
Moses built the Tabernacle according to the
model that God showed him on the mountain, on
His orders, as His servant. Aaron also carried out the
duties of the high priest as a servant of God. But the
Tabernacle itself, as also the service of the high
priest, were solely the work of God: He planned, de-
signed and called people to carry out His plan. In all
their greatness, exaltation and faithfulness, Moses
and Aaron were merely servants of God and not
on par with God, far less were they God Himself.
And here we come to the decisive difference be-
tween them and Jesus Christ, of whom it says in He-
brews 3:3-6, For this man was counted worthy of
more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath
builded the house hath more honour than the
house. For every house is builded by some man;
but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily
was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testi-
mony of those things which were to be spoken after;
but Christ as a son over his own house; whose
house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the
rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Moses was

faithful over the Old Testament house, the Taberna-
cle and the people of Israel. Now the letter to the
Hebrews speaks of the fact that Jesus is the Son over
His own house. Moses and Aaron were servants
in the house of God, but it was not their own house.
Jesus, on the other hand, is appointed over His own
house. This is a great difference, for this house is not
made of canvas or stones; it is not a cathedral or
dome. No, all who have come to believe in Jesus
Christ as their Redeemer and Lord, the living
Church of God, are this house, whose house we
are, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing
of the hope firm unto the end (Hebrews 3:6).
A Habitation of God through the Spirit
Concerning the New Testament house of God, Paul
wrote to his spiritual son, Timothy, that thou
mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself
in the house of God, which is the church of the liv-
ing God (1 Timothy 3:15). The letter to the Eph-
esians even speaks of the fact that all born-again
Christians comprise the new, spiritual temple, In
whom [Jesus Christ] all the building fitly framed to-
gether groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in
whom ye also are builded together for an habitation
of God through the Spirit (Ephesians 2:21-22).
Children of God are called to eternal life. Even if
our body, the outward shell is destroyed, we have
eternal life in us. What an inconceivable miracle of
the grace of God! Should this not drive us much
more to fear, revere and be grateful to God?
Both the Tabernacle and the Temple in the Old
Testament were merely a foreshadow of the future
house of God: His Church. It is as with the priestly
sacrifices, which foreshadowed the once and for
all sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God on
Calvarys cross. In principle, the Church of God,
comprised of Jews and Gentiles, is the fulfillment of
the Old Testament, the fulfillment of the counsel of
God. The Church portrays fulfilled prophecy. The
Tabernacle, as also the Temple, have become super-
fluous. Why? Because the Holy Spirit lives in the
Church. All the sacrifices are no longer necessary.
Why? Because Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself once
and for all (cf. Hebrews 9:24-28). And this volun-
tary and all-embracing sacrifice is present in the
Church daily: the cross of Calvary! In the Church
the victory of God is already revealedin and
through His Son Jesus Christ.
Hold Fast, Firm to the End!
Lastly, we are encouraged to hold fast to the end, not
to let go of what we possess, and to persevere in the
Word of God, if we hold fast the confidence and
the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end (He-
brews 3:6). If we are truly born again and therefore
are the house of God, i.e. a temple of the Holy
Spirit, then we need to be worthy of this high call-
ing. It should be a matter of course for children of
God to hold fast to the basic statements of the Holy
Scriptures, especially to Jesus Christ, the author
and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), the cor-
nerstone (Ephesians 2:20ff).
A church where Jesus Christ is not at the center is
not worthy of being called a church of the living
God, for in a true Christian church:
The Word of God should be proclaimed, taught,
kept and practiced
The nature of God should be revealed
And God should be worshiped and glorified.
Further, as members of a local church, we are re-
quired to hold fast to the promises of God, to trust
His Word and to look to the future with joyful
hearts. What an eternally glorious future awaits us
(cf. 1 Corinthians 2:9)! When we remember that we

16 M I D N I G H T C A L L
are the house of God here on earth and repre-
sent our Creator-God, it is fully inappropriate to
go around looking like the hunchback of
Notre Dame after a visit to the dentist!
We should rather rejoice that we belong to
the Lord Jesus, that we are bought with His blood
and one day will be with Him forever (1 Thessaloni-
ans 4:17 and John 17:24).
Paul wrote to the Philippians from the
prison in Rome, where he really had
no reason to rejoice, Rejoice in
the Lord always: and again I say,
Rejoice (Philippians 4:4). Al-
ways, and not just when we are on
cloud seven! This does not mean an artificial joy,
but a joy that comes from the heart and has its roots
in Jesus Christ.
Why do we, as born-again Christians who belong
to the Church of the living God, have reason to re-
joice and be confident? With somewhat different
words, let me say it again: because our eyes are not
on the present with all its cares and worries, CO2
levels and climate change, this and that. We must
obey the command, Be careful for nothing; but in
every thing by prayer and supplication with thanks-
giving let your requests be made known unto God
(Philippians 4:6). Why? So that the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding, shall keep your
hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (verse 7).
No, as born-again Christians, we have our eyes on
the future and therefore we have a goal before our
eyes: the glory and presence of God and Jesus
Christ. A Christian should not look back on sins he
has committed, wondering whether everything is re-
ally in order with the Lord. If he does look back,
then this should only be out of gratitude to God,
who has made everything wonderfully new in his
life: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new
creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).
In Hebrews 3:6, we read, if we hold fast the
confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto
the end. This does not mean some de-
ceptive hope, because it is grounded on
the true Word of God. This is why this liv-
ing hope is connected with assurance of salva-
tion, the firm confidence that all the promises of
God in the Bible really are true, and therefore
also the unmoveable faith in waiting for
the meeting with the Lord Jesus, who
died, rose again, ascended into
heaven and really will return to
take His Church to Himself in
the kingdom of heaven (cf.
John 14:2-3 and 1 Thessalonians
4:16-18).
We must cling to this living hope confi-
dently and steadfastly up to the end. When a local
church questions the elementary statements of the
Holy Scriptures, and also no longer awaits the com-
ing of the Lord, it loses every legitimate reason to be
called the church of the living God, for it is only a
lifeless shell, like the temple in Jerusalem once was
when the glory of God had departed from it (cf.
Ezekiel 10:18).
Dear child of God, do not cast away your confi-
dence, which has a great reward, as it says in He-
brews 10:35-37, Cast not away therefore your
confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.
For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have
done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
For yet a little while, and he that shall come will
come, and will not tarry. However the storm may
be raging around us, let us cling to the unsearchable
riches which God has left us: His Word in the Old
and New Testaments, which reach their climax in
Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith;
who for the joy that was set before him endured the
cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the
right hand of the throne of God. For consider him
that endured such contradiction of sinners against
himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds
(Hebrews 12:2-3).

Jude: Conditions Revealed for
Last-day Christians
The book of Jude is smallone chapter 25 verses longtucked in just
before the Revelation. Just as Genesis is the first book of the Bible and
Revelation the last, the position of Jude is equally significant. It holds a
spot that parallels Esther in the Old Testament.
B y W i l f r e d H a h n
T
he Book of Esther is the last
of the historical books for
the Jews in the Old Testa-
ment. It was meant to be prophetic
foreshadowing of the future his-
tory of the Jewish people, largely
taking place over the times of the
Gentiles. Immediately following is the
Wisdom Literature, and then the
prophets.
The book of Jude holds a similar an-
chor in the New Testament, providing
the last instructions for the Church Age.
Prophetic in character, it foreshadows
the fate of the Church and Christians for
the period between the epistles and the
3rd chapter of Revelation.
Jude, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote
this epistle with one main objective in
view: [] That ye should earnestly
contend for the faith which was once
delivered unto the saints (Jude 1:3).
Why? Because: [] There are cer-
tain men crept in unawares, who were
before of old ordained to this condem-
nation, ungodly men, turning the grace
of our God into lasciviousness, and
denying the only Lord God, and our
Lord Jesus Christ (verse 4, KJV).
Jude is writing expressly to prepare
the Church against teachers of false-
hoods, corruptions and the fleshly
philosophies of mankind. Contending
for the faith is the very line of defense
that falls when the gospel is distorted
and corrupt doctrine is adopted.
We can see here that the Church was
attacked very early by false teachers who
had slipped into its ranks even while
the apostles were still alive. These false
teachers are sneaky and devious not
going in unto the sheep by the front
gate. Jesus warned: I tell you the truth,
the man who does not enter the sheep
pen by the gate, but climbs in by some
other way, is a thief and a robber (John
10:1). Because of their slipperiness and
subtle ways of encroaching upon the
Church, Jude then lays out a list of diag-
nostic characteristics by which to recog-
nize them, lest the Christian be caught
unawares.
But while Jude is responding to what
he sees in his day, he is certainly also
covering the conditions of the very last
days. He says: But, dear friends, re-
member what the apostles of our Lord
Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you,
In the last times there will be scoffers
who will follow their own ungodly de-
sires (verses 17-18, NIV).
Following Judes introduction, two
structures are then carried throughout
the rest of this book as of verse 5:

Paul referred to a physical departure in 2 Thessalonians 2:3, and said that physical departure must occur first, and
then there would be the revealing of the man of lawlessness. Part 2 of this article examines verses 6-7 of 2
Thessalonians 2, which provide greater support in defense of the doctrine of the pretribulational rapture.
PART II
28 M I D N I G H T C A L L
IDENTIFYINGTHE RESTRAINER
Second Thessalonians 2:6-7 refers to a re-
strainer that continues to restrain until he is
taken out of the way. There are generally
five different views as to identifying the re-
strainer, with the first being that it is the Ro-
man Empire. The restrainer cannot be the
Roman Empire because such a view limits
the restrainer to the past, and Paul indicated
that the one being restrained, the man of sin,
will live in the future during the Day of the
Lord. One other view is that the restrainer is
human government, which cannot be correct
because human government will continue to
exist even after the man of sin is revealed.
The man of sin will establish his own gov-
ernment and will enforce it as his government and
his government alone. This government will even
require believers to deny the living God, but unbe-
lievers will obey; therefore, a government still ex-
ists even when the man of lawlessness, the man of
sin, is revealed, so it cannot be human govern-
ment. Another idea is that the restrainer is Satan.
Scripture teaches that a house divided against it-
self cannot stand (Matt 12:25); therefore, the re-
strainer cannot be Satan, either. Is the restrainer
the church? According to 2 Thessalonians 2:9, the
restrainer will prevent the activity of Satan with all
power, and signs, and false wonders. It is nice to
think that the church could restrain the activity of
Satan, his power, his signs and false wonders. In a
sense, the church can with the gospel, with the
preaching of the Word of God, but not in the
fullest sense because only God can do that.
As Martin Luther said in agreement with Scrip-
ture, Satan is Gods devil; he is not a rival, but
God just uses him to accomplish His purposes.
The church does not have that power. According
to Jude 9, dispute with the devil must be on the
basis of the Lords rebuke. Even Michael the
archangel recognized that only God could oppose
Satan. What is stated with regard to the restrainer
in 2 Thessalonians 2 is the fact that this restrainer
prevents one who uses all powers, and signs, and
lying wonders; therefore, it cannot be the church.
Indication as to the identity of the restrainer can
be determined because the gender for the word ac-
tually changes. The Greek word for restrains
changes from the neuter (which is just generic as
opposed to being masculine or feminine) in verse
6 to the masculine in verse 7. It seems to be note-
worthy that the gender changes from one verse to
the next. Why would verse 6 state, what restrains
him now, and do so in a general sense, and then
change to a masculine form in verse 7, when stat-
ing, he who now restrains?
It would seem that the only manner one can un-
derstand the change from the neuter present active
participle (to katecon, +o io+:ov) in verse 6 to
the masculine present active participle (Jo kate-
cwn, o io+:v) in verse 7 is that the latter
should be understood as referring to the Holy
Spirit. The restrainer will restrain until he is re-
moved, and it is the Holy Spirit accomplishing the
action. The restrainer will restrain until he is re-
moved (genhtai, y:vq+oi). Genhtai (y:vq+oi) is
an aorist middle subjunctive from the deponent
verb ginomai (yivooi). Deponent verbs have
middle or passive endings but are translated as ac-
tive in meaning. In 2 Thessalonians 2:7, the verb
The man of sin will establish his own government and will enforce it as his gov-
ernment and his government alone. This government will even require believers
to deny the living God, but unbelievers will obey; therefore, a government still ex-
ists even when the man of lawlessness, the man of sin, is revealed.
would mean that the subject is act-
ing. Genhtai (y:vq+oi) does not de-
note removal by an outside agent,
but indicates a voluntary action of
the restrainer. The Greek indicates
that the restrainer is actively per-
forming the act of restraining. The
restraining is not some sort of a pas-
sive thing, but the restrainer is do-
ing this actively.
Some have said that the idea of
the restrainer being taken out of
the way cannot refer to a spatial re-
moval. In other words, it cannot re-
fer to a physical removal, but only
some form of resignation. Page 159
of A Greek-English Lexicon of the
New Testament and Other Early
Christian Literature (1979) refer-
ences 2 Thessalonians 2:7 as an ex-
ample of deponent verb usage to
denote change of location (i.e.
leave the scene). The deponent
verb usage in 2 Thessalonians 2:7
does indeed indicate a change in lo-
cation. The 2000 (third) edition of
this standard Greek lexicon (pp.
198-99) refers to the same verse as an example of
deponent verb usage to indicate [making] a
change of location in space.
Therefore, when one examines the context of the
Greek word apostasia, and examines what is stated
in verses 6-7, it is easy to discern that the focus is
upon a spatial departure, a physical departure. The
entire context favors such an interpretation.
REMOVAL OF THE RESTRAINER
Based upon context and grammar, it is best to un-
derstand that the Holy Spirit is specifically doing
the restraining. Is the Holy Spirit taken from the
earth? The Holy Spirit cannot be taken from the
earth because He is omnipresent. He is the one who
effects salvation. Consequently, if the Holy Spirit
was removed, then nobody could be saved during
the tribulation if that was a possibility. One reads in
Revelation with regard to multitudes coming from
that period having received salvation, believing in
God, as a result of the Holy Spirits ministry (cf.
John 16:8-11).
What is the restraining influence? Upon examin-
ing the New Testament and reading with regard to
the Holy Spirit indwelling believers (which is some-
thing that never occurred in the Old Testament in
the sense that the Holy Spirit actually dwelt within
the believer and stayed), it would be natural to un-
derstand the removal of the restrainer as referring

SECOND THESSALONIANS 2 AND THE RAPTURE PART II
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon someone and empower
for ministry, and sometimes there would be a filling, but it was not permanent.
The experience with the church is permanent; it is a permanent filling of the
Holy Spirit. He does not depart from the church.

there would be a filling, but it was not permanent.
The experience with the church is permanent; it is
a permanent filling of the Holy Spirit. He does not
depart from the church. Such a doctrine is both
comforting and humbling, to recognize that God
sees everything, but it is also comforting in the
sense that believers know that God is always with
them, to strengthen, to guide, and to empower.
The doctrine has a sobering aspect, but it also has
a comforting aspect. What does it mean? In verses
6-7 of 2 Thessalonians 2, what currently restrains?
The Holy Spirit, as He indwells the church, is actu-
ally used by God to restrain evil.
The church cannot complain and say how bad
the world is, without first looking inward and un-
derstanding that the church is a restraining influ-
ence. If the church is doing what it needs to do,
i.e. if the church is being obedient to God, there is
a restraining influence of evil as the church is be-
ing faithful. The church has much opportunity to
be faithful to God and have a tremendous impact
upon the culture. The restraining influence is the
Holy Spirit within the church. Examination of the
context and all the other
factors identified in this ar-
ticle and the previous one
indicate a pretribulational
rapture, such as statements
in verse 3 that unless the
departure (i.e. the rapture)
comes first, the man of law-
lessness will not be re-
vealed, and then the
tribulation (i.e. the Day of
the Lord) begins. Paul said
the departure, the physical
departure of the church,
has to come first. The
church is that restraining
influence, but when the
church departs and leaves
this earth, then that re-
straining influence is
taken, and the man of lawlessness can then be re-
vealed.
The man of lawlessness cannot be revealed now
while the church is here. Why? The answer is that
the church would oppose him by citing the Scrip-
tures and indicating that he is the prophesied man
of sin. The church would oppose the man of sin;
therefore, the church has to be removed for the
man of lawlessness to be revealed, and then the
events of Revelation will be fulfilled. Second Thes-
salonians 2 has two very clear references to the
rapture of the church.
CONCLUSION
The removal of the restrainer is a reference to the
departure of the Holy Spirit in the pretribulational
rapture of the church. The church has been
granted a tremendous opportunity to restrain evil
in this world through faithfulness to God, the
proclamation of the gospel, and the making of dis-
ciples. May the church pray for Gods help to be
faithful until the very moment, the very second
that God calls His people home to glory. (408)
The removal of the restrainer is a reference to the departure of the Holy Spirit in
the pretribulational rapture of the church. The church has been granted a tremen-
dous opportunity to restrain evil in this world through faithfulness to God, the
proclamation of the gospel, and the making of disciples.
T
he 70 weeks of years are not about the age
of the Church, the age of grace, but solely
about Gods plan of salvation with Israel,
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people
and upon thy holy city (Daniel 9:24). This is
a clearly defined time span: 70 weeks of years
(70 x 7 years = 490 years). The Scofield Bible
says regarding these, These are weeks or, more
accurately, sevens of years; seventy weeks of
seven years each.
What the 70 weeks of years mean for Israel.
upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to fin-
ish the transgression, and to make an end of sins,
and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to
bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up
the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most
Holy (Daniel 9:24). According to this, the 70
weeks of years mean the following for Israel:
1. The continual transgressions of Israel will
come to an end. No further apostasy will take
place.
2. The continual sinning of the people and the
individual will have ceased.
3. The iniquity of Israel will be forgiven. This
took place factually at Calvary (Hebrews 9:26).
Practically, it will be a reality for Israel at the return
of the Messiah, In those days, and in that time,
saith the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought
for, and there shall be none (Jeremiah 50:20).
There shall come out of Sion the deliverer, and
shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob (Romans
11:26).
4. The Messianic kingdom of righteousness will
be established, And the kingdom and dominion,
and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole
heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of
the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting
kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey
him (Daniel 7:27).
5. All prophecies will come to their final fulfill-
ment. Just as all the prophecies had to be fulfilled
concerning the first coming of Jesus and His suffer-
ing, so everything that is still outstanding concern-

ing His second coming will be fulfilled. Professor
Werner Gitt cites a man named Finis Jennings
Dake (1902-1987) as saying that he had searched
throughout the Bible and drawn up statistics. Ac-
cording to his calculations, there are 6,408
prophecies in the Bible, and 3,268 of these have
been proven to have been fulfilled.
6. In connection with the return of Jesus, there
will be a rest-fulfillment. To this belongs the
anointing of the Holy of Holies. This means that
in the Messianic kingdom there will be a new
temple (Ezekiel 40-48), which will be anointed at
the dedication of it, just as the tabernacle was
anointed with oil in Exodus 40:9. In a way, the
first temple was also anointed by the appearing of
the glory of the Lord there (1 Kings 8:10-11).
The dividing of the 70 weeks of years. After a
general review of the 70 weeks of years is given
in verse 24 of Daniel 9, further information is
given in detail, Know therefore and understand,
that from the going forth of the commandment to
restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah
the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore
and two weeks: the street shall be built again,
and the wall, even in troublous times. And after
threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut
off, but not for himself: and the people of the
prince that shall come shall destroy the city and
the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a
flood, and unto the end of the war desolations
are determined. And he shall confirm the
covenant with many for one week: and in the
midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and
the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading
of abominations he shall make it desolate, even
until the consummation, and that determined
shall be poured upon the desolate (verses 25-
27).
The 70 weeks of years are divided into three
parts:

Parents concern for the safety of their chil-
dren is to be commended. However, one can-
not deny that a step in that direction leads one
closer to reliance upon electronic devices. In
our world, one can barely get by without a
credit card, cell phone and a computer. If
those often convenient items would suddenly
fail to function, it could cause a global cata-
strophe. Thus, we see the irreversible trend
toward total reliance upon man-made secu-
rity devices. 3908

The Taliban-ordered killing comes at a
time when international rights groups
have raised worries that attempts to negotiate
with the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan
could mean a step backward for human rights in
the country. When the Islamist extremists ruled
Afghanistan, women were not allowed to leave
their houses without a male guardian, and public
killings for violations of their harsh interpretation
of the Quran were common.
The stoning appeared to arise from an affair
between a married man and a single woman in
Kunduz provinces Dasht-e-Archi district.
They were discovered by Taliban operatives
and stoned to death in front a crowd of about
150 men, district government head Mohammad
Aqyar said.
First the woman was brought out and stoned,
then the man a half an hour later, Aqyar said. He
decried the punishment, which he said was or-
dered by two local Taliban commanders.
The ancient practice of death by
stoning has been abandoned in all but a
handful of countries. It is still a legal
punishment in some countries, like Iran,
which justify it under Shariah, or Islamic
law, although human rights activists say
the Quran never specifically prescribed
stoning for adultery.
Recently, Irans religious authorities
called off the planned stoning of a woman con-
victed of cheating on her husband. Sakineh Mo-

The Bible determined capital punishment
for adultery: And the man that committeth
adultery with another mans wife, even he
that committeth adultery with his neigh-
bours wife, the adulterer and the adulteress
shall surely be put to death (Leviticus
20:10). Such execution is God-ordained.
The Law excludes mercy.
Later in history, Jesus was confronted
with an adulteress: They say unto him,
Master, this woman was taken in adultery,
in the very act. Now Moses in the law com-
manded us, that such should be stoned: but
what sayest thou? (John 8:4-5). How did
Jesus answer? He that is without sin
among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
Jesus resorts to a much higher Law, the
Law of conscience and conviction, thus ex-
posing each and every one of us and our
own failure regarding transgression of the
Law.
But Jesus goes one step further in expos-
ing our sinful nature, as we can read in
Matthew 5:27-28: Ye have heard that it
was said by them of old time, Thou shalt
not commit adultery: But I say unto you,
That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust
after her hath committed adultery with her
already in his heart. This new, infinitely
higher Law, declares guilty every human
being on the face of the earth. But praise
God, He, the Sinless One, became sin for us
and paid the penalty for any and all sin, as
recorded in 1 John 1:7: and the blood of
Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all
sin. What must we do? Verse 9 answers:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and
just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness. 3898

Has theSouthern
Giant Awoken?
Ever since President Lula won
the first of his twoPresidential
elections in2002, Brazil has
grownfromstrengthtostrength,
while his social policies targeted
the poor, bringing millions out
of poverty andfromwelfare to
workfare, contributing towards
the economy.
Today Brazil has proudly announced
that it has surpassed the average world
GDP per capita. Do we pay attention to the sun-
shine today or the clouds on tomorrows hori-
zon?
Precisely ten years ago, for the first time in
my life I felt first-hand the significance of buying
power: with ten thousand dollars in cash in my
pocket, I could have bought the entire contents
of most small and medium-sized shops I en-
tered in Brazil. Ten years ago, a Brazilian emi-
grant could come to Europe, earn the minimum
salary, five years later return to Brazil and if not
live like a king, had his life sorted out in terms of
a house and a business.
Not so today. 400 Euro is equivalent to
around 1,000 Reais, well below the average na-
tional income of 1,300 R$ per month, the only
advantage being that a Brazilian emigrant who
chooses to live like an immigrant in Europe, liv-
ing ten to a house and spending the minimum,
existing rather than living, would save the 1,000
R$ instead of spending it.
New figures released in a study by Brazilian
economists, presented in a report by Klinger
Portella point towards the Brazilian Gross Do-
mestic Product per capita reaching the world-
wide average by 2010. Nothing new. After
record growth rates registered in 2007 to 2008
and the quick recovery from the recession in Q2
of 2009, already by the end of last year the CIA
World Factbook was forecasting a GDP/capita
earnings of 10,470 USD, based on a 10,200
USD GDP/capita at the end of 2009.

President Lula was considered the super so-
cialist that would lead Brazil toward com-
munism and, as a result, becoming
non-competitive with the European world.
After ten years, however, everything has
changed. The southern giant is indeed
awakening. Brazil, with its gigantic land
mass and many resources including an
abundance of water, rainforests, and agri-
culturally fertile land, will become another
powerful voice among the worlds leaders.
The latest discovery of a virtually immea-
surable wealth of oil on Brazils continental
shelf has become an additional ingredient
to support the confidence of the people in
looking toward a significantly improved
standard of living and becoming one of the
leading nations of the world. 3905

China may soon put an end to that.
U.S. naval planners are scrambling to
deal with what analysts say is a game-changing
weapon being developed by Chinaan unprece-
dented carrier-killing missile called the Dong
Feng 21D that could be launched from land with
enough accuracy to penetrate the defenses of
even the most advanced moving aircraft carrier at
a distance of more than 1,500 kilometers (900
miles).
Analysts say final testing of the missile could
come as soon as the end of this year, though
questions remain about how fast China will be
able to perfect its accuracy to the level needed
to threaten a moving carrier at sea.
The weapon, a version of which was dis-
played last year in a Chinese military parade,
could revolutionize Chinas role in the Pacific
balance of power, seriously weakening Wash-
ingtons ability to intervene in any potential con-
flict over Taiwan or North Korea. It could also
deny U.S. ships safe access to international wa-

the defense budget for almost every year of the
past two decades, the Chinese navy has be-

its traditional mission of retaking Taiwan to push

The Navy has long had to fear carrier-killing
capabilities, said Patrick Cronin, senior director

Virgin Mary
Dear Arno Froese,
I am 90 years old. I cant say I was
born a Catholic, but I was raised as
one with very strict parents.
I strongly believe in God, but am
confused on many matters, especially
in the Catholic Church. I am totally
deaf and cant understand speech. I am
a completely disabled veteran. I left
the Catholic Church for a year in favor
of a Christian church near our home.
Now these services are 3-4 hours long.
Being that I cant hear nor understand
speech, I fight hard to stay awake. So
I went back to the Catholic church as
their services are usually no more than
one hour.
Here is my question: What about
the Virgin Mary? The Bible rarely
mentions her other than the birth of
Jesus. What about all these appari-
tionsLourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe,
etc.? Only the Catholic Church en-
shrines them. Please let me know your
thoughts.
-R.Vigil, CA
Answer: The Bible says,Blessed is he that read-
eth, and they that hear the words of this
prophecy; thus, reading and hearing are
equally beneficial.
The Bible makes no provision to address
Mary in prayer, take note of apparitions or at-
tach divinity to any shrines. Mary indeed was
blessed amongst (not above) women. During
Jesus earthly ministry, His biological relation-
ship was superseded by the spiritual. When He
was told, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren
stand without desiring to speak unto thee, He
answered,For whosoever shall dothe will of my
Father which is in heaven, the same is my
brother, and sister, and mother (Matthew
12:50). Furthermore, He made this distinction
clear when He said, Woman, what have I to do
with thee? at His first miracle. As He was dying
LETTERS TO THE EDI TOR

on the cross, He stated, Woman, be-
hold thy son, referring to John. Mary
is documented to be the mother of
Jesus, but never the mother of God.
That teaching is based on logical in-
terpretation only. It is not Mary, but Je-
sus alone who has exclusively
accomplished salvation for man. He is
the beginning and the end, the Au-
thor and Finisher of our faith.
In the Catechism of the Catholic
Church, Article 2, headed:TheTransmis-
sion of Divine Revelation, it states: It is
clear therefore that, in the supremely
wise arrangement of God, Sacred Tradi-
tion, Sacred Scripture, and the Magis-
terium of the Church are so connected
and associated that one of themcannot
stand without the others. Working to-
gether, each in its own way, under the
action of the one Holy Spirit, they all
contribute effectively to the salvation of
souls(page 34). Thus, Jesus is no longer
the exclusive Author and Finisher of
faith and salvation, butSacredTradition
and the Magisterium of the Church
have become co-redeemers. Mary also
is considered a co-redeemer:But while
in the most Blessed Virgin the Church
has already reached that perfection
whereby she exists without spot or
wrinkle, the faithful still strive to con-
quer sinandincrease inholiness. Andso
they turn their eyes to Mary: in her, the
Church is already the all-holy (Article
829, page 239).
Even those who do not believe can
easily understand that we are dealing
with a dual gospel: one which is headed
exclusively by Jesus and Him alone
through the Holy Spirit, and the other
by decisions and conclusions arrived at
by man, thus creating another Jesus, an-
other gospel, by another spirit (see 2
Corinthians 11:4).
Sacrifice
Dear Sir,
I am puzzled about a certain
aspect of the sacrifice ritual.
I would like to know what the
procedure of the priests is regard-
ing the slaughter, burning (of
carcass), or even if there is a
complete burning (as indicated
in the burning to ashes of the
heifer). Is the meat roasted for
human consumption, or is the
entire carcass destroyed? What
exactly is the process, the proce-
dure in a step-by-step protocol?
In short, how are sacrificed ani-
mals handled and disposed of?
It seems a tremendous waste if
these animals are totally de-
stroyed, to say nothing of the
huge energy loss required.
Thank you for your help and
consideration.

Answer: Read carefully Leviticus chap-
ters 1 7, and you will find details about
the burnt offering, meat offering, peace
offering, sin offering, and trespass offer-
ing. The burnt offering is the only one
wholly burnt.
Sacrificing animals served to tem-
porarily cover the sins of the people of
Israel. Before the industrial revolution,
animals were a measure of blessings
and prosperity; thus, God required the
Jews to give their best as a sacrifice.
However, all sacrifices pointed to the
perfect sacrifice, accomplished by Je-
sus Christ the Lord on Calvarys cross.
Hebrews 10:12 reads:But this man, af-
ter he had offered one sacrifice for
sins for ever, sat down on the right

Animals
Dear Sir:
Your August Letters to the
Editor had a letter from I. Ede-
Nanney, MO about her two girls
(pet dogs) being left behind dur-
ing the Rapture. I too have had
the same feelings about my two
Chihuahua boys (pet dogs).
I thought the following Scrip-
tures would bring comfort to her
as they did for me: A righteous
man regardeth the life of his
beast: but the tender mercies of
the wicked are cruel (Proverbs
12:10); I have made the earth,
the man and the beast that are
upon the ground, by my great
power and by my outstretched
arm, and have given it unto
whom it seemed meet unto me
(Jeremiah 27:5); For every
beast of the forest is mine, and
the cattle upon a thousand hills.
I know all the fowls of the
mountains: and the wild beasts
of the field are mine (Psalms
50:10-11); and, For that which
befalleth the sons of men befall-
eth beasts; even one thing befall-
eth them: as the one dieth, so
dieth the other; yea, they have all
one breath; so that a man hath
no preeminence above a beast:
for all is vanity. All go unto one
place; all are of the dust, and all
turn to dust again. Who
knoweth the spirit of man that
goeth upward, and the spirit of
the beast that goeth downward
to the earth? (Ecclesiastes 3:19-
21).
There certainly will be ani-
mals in heaven and on earth as
The lion [lies] down with the
lamb.
-D. Irish, PA
Answer: Proverbs 12:10 states that a
good man will take care of his animal
and the evil does not. Jeremiah 27:5
shows the absolute power of the Cre-
ator. Psalm 50:10-11 confirms the ab-
soluteness of God. Ecclesiastes 3:19-21
speaks of life on earth. Both man and
beast will die and disintegrate. The He-
brew Tenakh reads: Who knows if a
mans lifebreath does rise upward, and
if a beasts breath does sink down into
the earth?Your last sentence,The lion
[lies] down with the lamb is not in
Scripture. However, Isaiah 65:25 says,
The wolf and the lamb shall feed to-
gether, and the lion shall eat straw like
the bullock. This will take place on
earth during the millennium when
Christ reigns, but not in heaven.
There is no definite indication that
animals will be in heaven.

Someone has made a glaring
and critical mistake in the July
2010 issue. On page 13, the first
column under Rome and Eu-
rope, line 13 reads: Even a rel-
atively modern country like the
U.S.A. is based on Roman princi-
ples. Actually, the Roman Re-
public (509-49 BC) was the
model for the Founding Fa-
thers. Nothing could be further
from the truth! This is a gross er-
ror and only feeds the pagan
propaganda that is pushed con-
stantly by Satanic forces to de-
stroy America.
Unless this is corrected, the
creditability of Midnight Call will
be seriously damaged.
-R. Beasley, FL
Answer: Scripture makes it clear that he
who sins is of the devil, and since all
have sinned, all are under the legitimate
rulership of Lucifer. Jesus gave Himself
to deliver us from this present evil
world (Galatians 1:4). 1 John 5:19 says,
And we know that we are of God, and
the whole world lieth in wickedness.
Your statement, Satanic forces to de-
stroy Americaindicates your belief that
America does not belong to the world
and our nation is or was agodly Christ-
ian nation. Holy Scripture, however,
makes no provision for a Christian na-
tion to exist in the midst of this present
evil world. Typical Catholic doctrine as-
sumes that the political government
must be guided by the Church. Thats
mixing religion with politics.
As to our Roman European roots,
there is an abundance of documenta-
tion available that clearly refutes any
and all assumptions that this country, or
any other country, was founded upon
Judeo-Christian principles. If the Bible is
correct, then the existence of a Christian
nation is actually Lucifers propaganda
success in the midst of the Church in
the U.S.A.
Scriptural Evidence
To the Editor of Midnight Call:
Your magazine is a blessing to
many who seek truth and knowl-
edge. Letters to the Editor is
my favorite section. I enjoy see-
ing different views of Scripture.
Thats how we learn.
I question where Scripture
specifically excludes women
from the office of the priest, dea-
NOVEMBER 2010 45
con, elder or any other office of
service to their God to which
they may be called or feel they
have been called.
I would like to submit a
thought about not only babies
but also others who never had
the opportunity to accept Jesus
and or his death on the cross for
their salvation. I speak of those
in primitive countries or who
were subject to hearing only
about another religion during a
short lifespan.
I believe a just God will not
only give them, but also require
of them an opportunity to ac-
cept or reject the offer of salva-
tion after having been taught
and then tempted by Satan. This
could only happened during the
millennial reign of Jesus when
Satan is chained up, and then re-
leased for a short time. What
other reason could there be for
his release before spending his
eternity in the lake of fire? All of
mankind must have the same
opportunity to accept or reject
Satan after being tempted. At
least thats my view of a just and
loving God. What say you?
The Bible or the Word of God
is a compilation of many sepa-
rate books or writings. In
Deuteronomy 4:2, we are told
not to add to or take away from
it, yet we added or combined
many more books into one book
(the Bible). Why didnt we stop
there?
The same is true in Proverbs
30:6 and Deuteronomy 12:32,
and again in Revelation 22:18-
19, where it specifically says not
to add to or take away from the
prophecy of this book, this book
of prophecy being what Jesus re-
vealed to John (see Revelation
1:3). How can anyone suggest
or believe that Revelation 22:18-
19 could possibly refer to 66
books, later combined and
written over thousands of years?
-D. Lane, MO
Answer: Anyone believing in Jesus
Christ must beof service to their God.
But the capacity to guide the flock and
lead them to green pastures is re-
served for the man, not woman. That is
the pattern clearly established in Holy
Scripture.
Your thoughts on innocence are a
theory I cannot confirm nor deny be-
cause I find no definite instruction re-
lating to it in Scripture.
Hebrews 1:1-2 summarizes the tes-
timony of Jesus Christ that He autho-
rized to pass on His message. The
reason for the inclusion of books in
the Canon of Scripture is by cross-ref-
erence and by the fact that they do
not contradict one another. Thats why
the Church does not accept the
Gospel of Thomas, or as lately popular,
the Gospel of Judas, nor the Apoc-
ryphal books as part of the Canon of
the Bible.
Jesus confirmed the Old Testament
when He said, all things must be ful-
filled, which were written in the law of
Moses, and in the prophets, and in the
psalms, concerning me(Luke 24:44).
Intellectually, there may be many
debates regarding the inclusion or ex-
clusion of certain writings, but from
spiritual perspectives, we have the tes-
timony of uncounted millions who
have found salvation by and through
the proclamation of the Word of God
as we have it today.
MC
Readers have enjoyed the
opportunity of writing in and
posing various questions and
concerns relative to the Body of
Christ. They have benefited from
the authors concise Scriptural
responses on topics such as the
Rapture of the Church, globalism,
the Ecumenical Movement, false
religions, eschatology, general
Scripture explanations and much
more.
