Concept: Below are some of the most recent developments related to reproductive health in our society. Your job will be to provide an analysis of these developments. As we discussed in the beginning of the unit sex ed is a values driven topic. These issues are inherently controversial themselves because although there are facts that may help you understand them; ultimately you see these facts through the prism of your own perception (values, morals, upbringing, etc.)! The sources listed are just a starting point, remember that any information may be biased and it is your job as an educated consumer to carefully analyze information for validity, reliability, and bias. Goal: Provide an analysis of the recent developments in reproductive health demonstrating an understanding of content specific information necessary to understand each issue (ie. What strains are protected against in the HPV vaccine, approved locations for the Safe Haven law). Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

Overview of the HPV Vaccine: HPV is the most common STD. HPV vaccines are a series of three shots over 6 months to protect against HPV infection. Two vaccines (Cervarix and Gardasil) protect against cervical cancer in women and one vaccine (Gardasil) protects against genital warts. Protects against 4 strands of HPV. What it Does Protect Against: 1. Cervical cancer 2. Genital warts 3.Other types of cancers What it Doesnt Protect (Think!): 1.Doesnt protect against other STDs 2.Doesnt help if you already have HPV 3. Does not protect against diseases caused by all types of HPV

Does this promote promiscuity or should we take advantage of something that could potentially help us? We should take advantage of something that could potentially help us because if you plan on becoming sexually active, you are likely to get HPV without the vaccine.

Basic Overview: The Plan B Contraceptive is birth control that can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. Plan B may prevent or delay ovulation or may interfere with fertilization of an egg.

Intended Use (Why people use it): To prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

Do You Need a Prescription?: No, it is over the counter.

Cost: $40-$60 for one pill

Basic Overview: Safe haven laws allow parents to leave their infant with the state instead of aborting, killing, or discarding the infant.

What happens to parental rights? Parents can give their baby to the state within 30 days of birth. The identity of the parents is not revealed. What is Illinois Law exactly? The Illinois law says that as long as you don't harm your baby, you can hand your newborn (30 days old or younger) to personnel at any hospital, police station or staffed fire station in Illinois for adoption with no questions asked.

This provides an alternative for someone not able to provide for a child because otherwise they might try to abort or kill the baby. This ensures that the baby will be safe.
