President’s Message___________________________________________
Aloha!
We have some busy days ahead with the Healthy Baby Finals still to be held
and then we’re doing our part in the ‘Adopt-A-School Day’ on Sunday, October
11th. But first, let’s talk about the State Convention.
The Convention, run by the Filipino Jaycees was a true success. Not only in the
excellent way it was run, but also for how your chapter fared.
HCJ came away with many awards for both individual and chapter achievement.
You can read all about it on Page 6.
A big mahalo to our HCJ members and friends for the incredible work you’ve contributed to the Stuffing Party and
our 2 Preliminaries. We have only the Finals to go at Ala Moana on Sunday, Sept 20th. Be there at 8AM to get us up
and running.
Immediately afterward we’re going to some International Dining Out (Restaurant TBA) to celebrate as well as to
enjoy some good food together.
On Saturday, September 19th @ 6PM head down to the Ala Moana Center Stage for the Adopt A School Day
Kickoff Rally! People from all the participating groups – Jaycees, Lions, Rotary, Etc. – will be there to get this big
project off to a great start.
After the Rally we move upstairs to Pearl for a lounge party. Admission at the Pearl event goes to the ‘Adopt A
School’ program: $5 for Jaycees, $10 everyone else.
Then, on Sunday, October 11h, HCJ will be actually doing our part on the official Adopt A School Day! We’re
painting the Hoo Cho Chinese School. It’s located at 1342 7th Avenue, off of Waialae Ave in the Kaimuki/Palolo
area. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and/or paint on. We’ll probably start at about 8:30AM.

Jonathan Cook

Saturday, September 5. 8AM, Pearlridge Mall, Uptown. At this time of the day there were just 2 kinds of
people there. Healthy Baby workers and senior citizens doing their morning laps around the mall. Our
group got on the job right away, setting up the registration table, the tabulation center upstairs, the goodie
bag table and everything else needed to run a successful event.
Our team handled approximately 150 baby contestants, all the way from the registration table to the
stage line to the stage steps and on to the goodie bag table that was the final stop. While that was
happening downstairs, our upstairs team tabulated the scoring, put our Walk Ins into the system and
printed up certificates. A pro effort all the way around.

his years in Jaycees. Your HCJ President came Outstanding Chapter Members – Ana Che & Jason

common experiences. Outstanding Chair(wo)man – Lily Fung

People always ask why I’m in the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, since they know that
I don’t have a drop of Chinese in me. I got introduced to the Jaycees through a good friend of mine and was
wondering what this was all about. With the first event I came out to be the 50th state fair. I got to know a few of the
members and had a bunch of fun. The rest is history.
When I am not doing Jaycee things like dinning out, movie nights, hiking, karaoke, GMM’s, BOD meetings, and
all the other events I am either golfing, checking out other events going on, or working. Golfing has been my recent
indulgence; I started in January of 2009 and got addicted. I can’t wait to get back on the course. I also like going out
to different ethnic events and learning something new as often as I can.
As for what I do for a living, I take people through a process to figure out how they look at their future and help
them prioritize and accomplish their goals.
It has been an awesome experience being a part of the Jaycees! I have met a vast amount of different individuals
through our chapter, other chapters, and events. I have made awesome new friends and contacts after becoming an
active member in the board and also creating stronger ties with each other.
I have learned more about how to run an event and how much work is done behind the scenes of the Honolulu
Chinese Jaycees. I look forward to all the upcoming events this year has to offer and starting up my hiking adventures
soon.
Mahalo,
Anthony Sato
