How to Load New Firmware

Follow these instructions to load new firmware. Call 1-800-929-7947 option 5 or +1-407-732-2510 for this issue or any
other questions.

Precautions
The following precautions should be taken when loading new firmware:
1. WARNING: Do not perform this Flash Upgrade with the PCD connected In-Service.

Instructions
The following instructions contain information required to load new firmware:
1. Load WinFlash on your PC (the program is located on the PCD Software CD – Contact the ABB Inc. at 1-800-929-
7947 ext. 5 and request a CD be mailed to you if you don't have this CD).
2. Contact ABB Inc. at 1-800-929-7947 ext. 5 and request a copy of the firmware V2.XX file be e-mailed or sent to you
on a 3.5"diskette.
3. Copy the firmware file pcdv2XX.abs to your hard drive under C:\WinFlash directory.
4. Export or save the PCD Settings to a file before performing the Flash upgrade, as ALL Settings will be erased.
5. Power down the PCD by opening the L1, L2, Batt(+) and Batt(-) fuse blocks. Verify the power is completely
disconnected by looking at the front of the control. All of the LED indicators and the backlit display should be off.
6. Remove the second module from the right, next to the PT/CT module when facing the back of the PCD labelled
COM2, COM3 or COM4 module (depending upon your PCD style) with a small Phillips screwdriver. You will also
need a small standard screwdriver to slide out the COM2, COM3, or COM4 card.
7. Power up the PCD.
8. Connect the RS232 port from the PC to the RS232 port on the CPU card (using a null modem adapter/cable). Note:
This is a non-isolated port.
9. Start WinFlash and press Quick Autodetect. This will bring up a screen verifying connection of the PC to the PCD. If
this doesn't occur, check the following through the HMI:
10. Go to Settings, Change Settings, Communications. The PCD should be set for Address 001, Frame = N,8,1, baud =
9600 or 19200 (19200 baud will make the download run faster) and the protocol must be set = ASCII. Try the Quick
Autodetect or Full Autodetect again.
11. Once communication is established, select Utilities - Update Flash ROM. A new window will appear.
12. In the new window, choose Select File, and choose the file pcdv2XX.abs, and then mouse click Download Flash.
13. The process should take approximately 15-20 minutes.
14. It is finished when the slide bar displays 100%. If an error message occurs, it indicates that there was a break in the
communication from the PC to the PCD. Typically, the error message is caused by screen savers or other programs
that run when the PC is at the low performance connection. If this occurs, turn off the programs (i.e. screen saver) and
restart Win Flash from the beginning.
15. Power down the PCD again per step 4 above and reinsert the COM2, COM3 or COM4 card.
16. Power up the PCD and verify the CPU Software Version Number is 2.X in the Unit information Menu.
17. Your PCD is now updated to Firmware Version 2.XX.
