9th Grade Scheduling


It is hard to believe that the School Year is half over. That means, it is time to start planning for our current 8 th graders to prepare for high school. On Monday, January 27 and Tuesday, January 28 eighth grade students will receive a presentation from Irmo High School regarding the registration process for high school. Students will receive their registration cards, a parent letter and a course catalog to bring home. Students and parents should review the information, sign the card and return it to the students math teacher before February 7, 2014. Attention All Students!!!


Do you frequently have the urge to move your body to the songs you hear on your radio, mp3 player, or mobile device? Sounds like taking dance is the perfect option for you! Irmo Middle School is offering dance classes for the first time this year and all are welcome to join the experience! Classes offered at this time are beginner and intermediate. Groove on down to guidance and add dance to your schedule! We look forward to having you part of the Irmo Dance Experience!

Dance Class Descriptions


Beginning Dance PREREQUISITE: None This dance course introduces students to rules, procedures, etiquette and vocabulary required for safe and effective participation in dance. The course provides a sequential introduction to dance techniques such as warm-up, cool down, conditioning, strengthening, stretching, and injury prevention. Students are introduced to a variety of dance styles including ballet, modern, jazz, world dance, social dance, lyrical, contemporary, and hip-hop. Students will explore basic choreographic concepts and improvisation. Out-of-school rehearsals and performances may be required. Specific attire and shoes are required for this course. Intermediate Dance 7th or 8th Semesters (1) PREREQUISITE: Instructors Approval Required or Pre-Assessment (Audition) This course will build on skills and knowledge gained in Beginning Dance. Students analyze the physiological effects of exercises on the body as well as identify and apply basic biomechanical principles. Students refine previously learned movements requiring greater skill in a variety of dance styles including ballet, modern, jazz, world dance, social dance, lyrical, contemporary, and hip-hop. Students design, improvise, and perform movement sequences, solve movement problems, explore compositional forms, and produce choreographic projects. Out-of-school rehearsals and performances are required. Specific attire and shoes are required for this course. 7th or 8th Semesters (1)

January begins the busiest time of the year for the IMS Bands. Here is an update on what is happening with the IMS Bands over the next few weeks:

Brewer Middle School, Greenwood SC. (Individual audition times TBA) Region Band auditions (inclement weather date) All-State Band auditions. Concert Festival
The SCBDA Concert Festival will be held on March 25 - 27, 2014. All three IMS Bands -- 7th Grade, 8th Grade, and Honor Band -- will attend. A registration fee of $25 for each student is due no later than Friday, January 10. The fee can be paid by cash or check or by way of your student's Booster account (if he or she has earned money through fundraisers). Checks should be made payable to the IMS Band Booster Club and placed in the yellow box in the Band Room. If you wish to use funds from your student's account, please write a note to that effect and have your student place it in the yellow box. We hope that everyone had a great Winter Break and is ready for a busy Spring Semester. If you have any questions, please email Layne Birdsong or call me at 732-4494.

SC DHEC Awards Presentation Wednesday January 15, 2014, 4:30 pm Mathias Sandwich Shop
Enjoy an atmosphere in a comfortable family setting and food that is fresh and delicious. While there, why not grab (at your own expense) a wonderful meal? The awards ceremony will begin at 5:15 pm and will end at approximately 5:30 pm. Persons unable to come may pick up your Student's Certificate anytime before the end of the year. Arts Display and Awards Night in May TBA .

Gathering begins at 4:30 pm - Order a Meal or Drink (at your expense) if you like. Ceremony at 5:15 pm - ending at 5:30 pm Conclusion 5:30 - 5:45 pm - latecomers eating at Mathias must finish by closing at 6:00 pm. 1st Place
